This was so stupid. If Kysaly had to place it on a scale, it was the stupidest thing they'd done in a very long time. A blind date in a damned theme park? Was this some person's sick joke? No, it was Kysaly's own fault, since they thought that a backdrop for a sketchy date would be best suited with a lot of people around. There was a new app being developed for vigilantes and villains alike as a way for them to get into relationships, or perhaps just get some action, without having to worry that they were meeting their arrest in the process.

On a whim, Kysaly downloaded and instantly matched with more people than they'd had guests at their café in a week. Perhaps it was the allure of their looks, or their job, or something more. With a sigh, they got ready and decided to wear something modest enough, but also with the intent that they were going after. In all honesty, Kysaly just wanted some human connection, and to get laid if it was at all possible. Would both of those things equal the same result? Maybe, probably, but Kysaly was fine with either one as well.

They waited at the ticketing booth at the front of Dream World, intent on making sure that the person actually showed before they'd cough up any money for an area that they wouldn't be caught dead in going to alone. With their hair fashioning a light cream colored bow to match their under-jacket attire, they waited patiently for their prized date.

Being undercover was horrifically lonely.

Gabriel had lost access to most of his friends and lovers after becoming a criminal. Outreach was a strong suit of his, and it’s not like they wouldn’t respond and offer a helping hand, but he didn’t want to compromise their lives if the underworld learned of his precious comrades. And if his secret were to be exposed, then they’d be at greater risk, too.

So, he got access to an underground dating app that was generally private and trusted and all of that good stuff! Unfortunately, with his quirk, he was able to steal an invite code from someone who knew none the wiser and created a profile for himself.

Really, he was looking for friends. But if something more popped up then so be it. That’s how he lived his life. And with his commitment issues, it led to a lot of broken hearts on the other end. With the encroaching loneliness, however, he could use someone to confide in.

“Hey,” Gabe says, pulling up behind Kysaly. “KysYrself?” It was their online handle. “It’s me, BigRoost.” Yeah, he’s still sticking with the bird bit. They’d already exchanged real names, but this proved to each other who they were at a moment. “Let’s get some tickets, yeah?”

Honestly, they hoped that they weren't going to get catfished. Back in Kysaly's pre-med days, they spent many a time on dating apps for a quick hook up, only to be met by someone that looked nothing like their pictures, and acted nothing like their texts. Most of those instances just left a sour taste in their mouth about the whole thing, but Kysaly was older now, smarter. If this person turned out to not be who they said they were, then they'd be able to politely leave without feeling guilty.

With a small jump, they'd turn to see their match for the day. Oh, handsome. Kysaly was surprised at their looks, doing a quick up and down as subtly as possible as if not to make it weird. "Yeah, that's me." A small, horribly nervous giggle, before they'd adjust to pull their purse in front of them. "Since this was my idea, I don't mind paying." Hopefully, the joke of their username wasn't lost to the other, as they did state they were a doctor. "Is there somewhere that you'd like to go first?" Kysaly would look over to a large map to their right and point. "I'm sure we will get a handheld version later too."

The map was huge. And there were so many things to do. And considering his online name was BigRoost, there was an attraction that immediately caught his eye.

“The Ferris Wheel,” He points to it. “Think about it. There’s so much to do here we’re gonna get overwhelmed trying to see it all. Why not look at everything from a bird’s eye view and see what catches our eye there?” Right, introductions. “And I’m Gabe, by the way.”

He flashes a smile, his high-energy self grateful to skulk through the event without getting pursued by criminals or arrested by heroes — hopefully. The idea of taking time to bond with someone, even if it doesn’t go well, was alluring. The last time he had been able to sit and talk with people he was either making something for them or had a gun in his face.

“Plus, it gives us a chance to get to know one another.” He’s on the move, dragging Kysaly along with him. “Ever heard of the game twenty questions?”

"Oh, that's a good idea." Kysaly paused for a moment just to stare at it on the map, gulping a bit. Thankfully, they were only a little bit afraid of heights. Kysaly would nod to agree again, not wanting to make it seem like they were interested in their suggested idea. "Gabe? I like that name." They'd turn to look back to him, wanting to give him a warm smile as his name passed through their lips. "Kysaly, or whatever shortening you want to make of that." Since Gabe was a much shorter name, if he wanted to come up with a nickname, they wouldn't mind one bit.

With Kysaly paying fast, they were almost immediately dragged as their tickets and two maps were shoved into their hand. "I have, but I haven't played that since college." The idea did bring a smile to them once more, as Kysaly gladly let themselves get whisked away to the Ferris Wheel. Thankfully, the line wasn't overly long and they were soon enough in their own pod. Sitting across from him, Kysaly would straighten out their dress, before laying their eyes on him. "Well, did you want to start?"

It was only a moment of hesitance, but as a detective, you learn to observe the tiny details. Before you know it, you realize tiny details comprise the world. We are more than people. We are everything we’ve ever touched — physically, emotionally, spiritually. There have been millions of lives that changed the world before we arrived. And we are one of the billions who would change the future — even if we were eventually long forgotten, our impact remains no matter how unnoticeable it seems.

“Kys is good,” Gabe winks. “But how will you know when I’m asking for one?” He doesn’t let the thought sit as they hurriedly make their way through the nearly nonexistent line, finding themselves across from one another. He’d be lying if he said he didn’t prefer it this way — being surrounded by people was overwhelming, even in the throws of directing.

Film was a way to express himself in a way that words were incapable of. He knew the limits of language Gabe’s quirk showed him that he would never be understood. Not in the way he wanted. Art was his outlet. Without it, he prefers small, personal conversations. Conversations like the one he planned to have now.

“On a scale of 1-10 how hot am I?” It was a joke, but a real question. He didn’t care about the answer as much as he cared about Kysaly’s reaction. Gabe offered a wink and a mischievous smile, knowing he’d put them in a difficult situation.

Oh, that was smoother than they had thought. Kysaly just blinked, then blinked again, taking in what Gabriel said as if they had just explained to them the meaning of life. A delayed reddening of their cheeks before an off-hand chuckle was all they were getting in those moments. Kysaly wanted to say more on it, but they were worried that if they did it would just end in them fumbling up their words because they weren't sure of a good response to a question like that.

After Kysaly got comfortable, they'd feel their cabin jolt a bit as it started up. Looking to Gabriel, the forwardness of their question was indeed a surprise. Their eyes widened, did a small up and down, before answering bluntly. "I would say an 8.5. No one is perfect, and I have not developed an emotional connection to you yet in order for my perception of your looks to be enhanced. I'm sure with time, you'd be a 10 to me." It was an answer a doctor would give, thinking about brain chemistry and all that shit. "You're my type, I'd "Kys" you whenever you for sure." They'd use air quotes for their own nickname, before leaning over and offering a smile. "How about me?"

“8.4” Gabriel didn’t hesitate. “I’m the hotter one, so if you want your score to go up, then mine has to, too.”

Flirting was second nature. Banter and writing and everything that came with the obsessive study of his craft helped him navigate social situations in ways that he could not have fathomed. Most of his words were variations upon variations that he’s read, watched, written, or said, thousands of times. Carefully crafting his response to each situation as he saw fit. But flirting was a defense mechanism. He wanted a friend. Someone he could trust.

‘20 questions’ was meant to facilitate that. Even now, he was deflecting from the heart of the matter. He was afraid to bare his soul to another. And while this was a stranger, a person you’re supposed to keep up the charade for, he knew he’d have to ease into the meat and potatoes of the date sooner or later.

How about later, though?

“That doesn’t count, by the way.” He says. “You can’t just ask my question back at me. So, it’s still your turn. You’re just lucky I answered it cos you’re cute.”

A wink.

One points lower than their own grading? Alright, it was higher than Kysaly expected. They didn't deny that they were good looking, but Kysaly knew that their appearance wasn't something that everyone liked, and a lot of people judged it harshly compared to a more conventionally attractive person like Gabriel. "You're a funny one, Gabe." They'd agree though, giving a small nod. "I don't mind your number being on top, but you need to work harder for it to warrant that." Kysaly liked how he looked, but it wasn't going to be simple to just raise the score with some witty remarks.

"Aren't you supposed to ask it back? Or are you saying I also have to ask you and ask you the same question?" Kysaly huffed a bit, not understanding these made up rules of the game. "Fine, well..." They thought, looking outside for a moment to see that they were about a quarter of the way to the top now. "Why'd you want to go out with me?"

“I’m saying you have to ask a completely different question. For example, after answering why I went out with you, I couldn’t ask you the same question.” It’s almost the same question, but just different enough to pass. They knew how to play the game. Fish for compliments, see how well the opposition navigates the awkward interactions of a first date, and maybe get lucky later in the evening after a few cocktails by the fireworks. But while Gabe excelled at flirting, he was good at negging, too. Not because he thought it an ideal way to win someone over — unlike some insecure, power-hungry men — but because the push and pull of banter made things dynamic. Fun.

“Because you said yes,” He says. Gabriel knows this isn’t the answer he wants. And even his elaboration won’t satiate it. “I’m on a dating app to meet people. First, you have to clear the 8 bar.” Gabe very obviously looks them up and down. “Pass.” Never mind, he can’t help but give them what he wants, it naturally flows off of him. “Then, you have to reply. Also, pass.”

At this point, his question has popped into his head. Time to cut through the fluff.

“But really, I just liked your username. It was fun. You seem fun.” He shrugs, but before sitting forward and leaning in. “What does your quirk do?”

"I see." They'd say under their breath, an acknowledgement of their understanding. Still, they'd wait for Gabriel's answer, patient, their attention fixated on him. Because he said yes- was that all there was to it? They both liked each other at a glance, their conversations beforehand had been fun and flirty enough, and they were both attractive. Wow, it felt too simple. "I guess we both thought the same. The looks, the initial reaction." Maybe it was just that and nothing more.

"It's a play on words I suppose." Kysaly was no killer, nor did they want to do the same to themselves. At the same time, they'd seen a lot of it working in the medical field, more than any person should if they want to stay sane. With them both leaning forward now, Kysaly could almost feel his breath. They were still a good bit apart, but if Kysaly really stretched, they could probably kiss. Wow, they were getting ahead of themselves for sure. "My quirk?" Kysaly looked down to their hands, gloved in a semi-transparent lace. It was enough to stop their quirk from working, but easy to take off or destroy. "I can feel what's wrong with someone with a single touch. It's why I wear gloves." A simple answer, but it was the best way to describe it without getting too complicated. "If you had a cut, say, on your finger..." Kysaly would grab at Gabe's hand, running their laced right pointer finger along the identical one of Gabriel. "I would be able to feel the exact vein that was cut, the blood pumping out of it, and your body trying desperately to close it."

Kysaly would pinch at Gabe's finger by pressing it in between their own pointer and thumb. "No matter how small the wound, as long as I'm in the right area, I can tell you what's wrong." Finally, their gaze would resurface to stare down Gabriel, ready for their reply. "I'll have to try it out sometime, if you ever get hurt." A pause, before they'd let go of Gabriel's hand. "Do you get nervous around doctors, Gabe?"

“If you’re gonna get that close,” Gabe says. “You might as well sit next to me.”

The cabin isn’t particularly large, but it’s meant to fit up to four people. And if he were to get a demonstration of the quirk — something he desperately wanted, considering how it was one of the few ways someone could experience him the way he experiences others — then they would have to get close enough to touch without falling over.

He scooches over and taps the seat next to him, using the hand Kysaly was so eager to grab to lightly tug them in his direction.

“I want you to use your quirk.” It’s not difficult to hurt yourself. For most people, it is. But most people don’t put themselves in life-threatening situations daily. And, even without that, the nature of movies required injury. Directors could usually skate by unhurt, but he had a very hands-on approach to his craft.

“Not at all,” He says. Doctors often tried to understand the body. And a few quirk specialists went out of their way to address his inability to connect with others after The Incident. He thinks of them fondly, even if most were necessarily distant. By this point, they’d reach the apex of the Ferris wheel. “Are you afraid of heights?”

He had a point, they were rather close to one another. Kysaly would oblige, moving to sit beside Gabriel without any care. He was cute, this was fun, and if it lead to them seeing each other again they'd be more than okay with that. No commitment ideas or worries about this situation were on Kysaly's mind in those moments.

His next statement shocked them a bit. "You want me to use it? I mean, I suppose I could." It wouldn't be uncommon to find something wrong with someone even without visible cuts or bruising. Kysaly would take off their gloves, shoving them in their purse without a care for how they went in. Before Kysaly could actually try to use their quirk though, they were distracted to see how high up they were. Clutching onto the hand that they had just let go rather roughly. With them never knowing if they were truly hurting someone, it felt odd whenever there was a sensation of touch. They'd look back to Gabriel, a shy smile coming out before a shrug. "They aren't my favorite- ah, your hand!" They'd raise their voice a bit, interlocking their fingers and closing their eyes for a moment. "Hmm, you have a bit of arthritis in your thumb's lower knuckle." They were no more thinking about flirting, but about giving out their findings. Their other hand would gently slide down Gabe's wrist, gently pinching and probing it. "And your wrist-" a slight rotation in a circle would happen to it "- it clicks! Perhaps an accident when you were younger, a sporting event?" They'd continue down, keeping their hands entwined as if to keep Gabriel in place. Moving down his arm, their fingers would trail it like a piece of art. "Hm, you've torn your bicep on this arm not too long ago. There is a lot of tension, do you stretch enough?" Before they continued, Kysaly would snap back into reality, opening their eyes with a gasp, before letting his arm and hand drop. "Ah, sorry! I got so handsy, I... I'm sorry."

“Don’t forget our line of work,” Neither of them was explicit about what they did, but the app they used gave enough of an implication of their less-than-legal practices. While Kysaly might have spent their time helping those who were otherwise helpless, or perhaps using their services to aid people they shouldn’t, Chirp was on the frontlines. He didn’t belong there, but he was looking for a certain someone who should have been caught twenty years ago. “Prone to injury.”

They immediately lost themselves in their practice, before thoughts flooded them with the context of the situation: a date. The implications were obvious. And the tension was palpable. Gabriel did what Gabriel does and found a way to maneuver through the situation with the grace of a dove.

“This hands for an 8.5? Imagine if I was an 8.6.” He smiled, before bringing them back to the real world. “By the way, you didn’t answer my question. Heights.” Still, Gabriels gives him an out. “If you are…” He looks down, offering his hand again. “We can stay handsy until we get down.”

Prone to injury, huh? That didn't sound good, but for now, Kysaly wasn't going to pry too much into the why. This was a first date after all, and the last thing they needed was to get into tragic backstories and ruin the mood that they so carefully created. Kysaly was lost in their craft, unknowingly making themselves seem like a weirdo compared to their earlier demeanor. Still, they took great pride in their job to the point that they weren't always able to understand where the lines needed to be drawn.

"I'm sure you will be soon." If they were this charismatic on a first date, Kysaly could see themselves getting invested in something with Gabriel. "Heights... I don't really like them." Kysaly would grab the offered hand, taking it gently with the intent for it to be about the date and not their medical background. "I'd really appreciate a distraction to take my mind off it, Gabe."
