The truth of the matter is that both the icy facade and fiery fury exist as a buffer between Kioko and further trauma from the outside world.
Damaged goods, though she would never willingly admit it, Kioko's primary goal in life and the driving force for the majority of her actions is to not only enact vengeance upon her mother's killer and her own family, but to create a world where such a thing no longer happens. This has given the young woman a morality that is neither black nor white, but grey. In her mind, the end always justifies the means. The thin line in the sand which Kioko walks is not the only effect of old wounds. Setting the wrong pattern will cause them to immediately explode. Setting the correct pattern means they will explode in exactly sixty seconds. The explosion radius is small at only 3 feet (1m) and has the concussive and fiery results one would expect of an explosive device that size.
