I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
The choice was a difficult one to make. Money made the world go round. Suffering from a lack of financial security had driven people to do far more dangerous things, at least in immediately obvious ways, but every individual was different. What they would risk for money varied. That Rhea needed time to think on it was no surprise to Kioko. If anything, it was a vote of confidence in favor of the Siren. The task at hand required finesse and wit, not bravado and brawn.
“Very well. I’ll do my best to navigate you through the interview process so that the option remains open,” Kioko said as the car began to slow. If Rhea looked outside, she’d notice that none of the buildings beyond the SUV’s windows bore any signage or indication of what they were. This was common with high end establishments where you had to know someone to even know it existed. The vehicle parked in an alley between two such buildings.
“We’re still some distance away.” Kioko handed Rhea a third item. “You’ll need to pretend that this is your personal phone.” Rhys had been planning this on his own for far longer than Kioko had expected. The phone records went back to when she had been incarcerated.
“The call history is exclusively constructed of correspondence to and from luxury beauty and wellness establishments, expensive restaurants and venues, designer clothing stores, and chauffeur services. We’re waiting for the latter. It will take you to the club. This is your last chance to ask questions and confirm that you have everything you need.”

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Kioko could taste the bitterness at the back of her throat that had traveled down from where irony lurked at the edges of her mind. She had been ostracized from a world her time among the underground had proved she was built for. Cold and cunning did as much for keeping her alive among backstreets as it would aid in dominating the boardrooms of old she had commanded for a brief stint even with as young as she had been.
And then there was Michael.
A soft-hearted would-be savior. That world would eat him alive for his compassion. If she had to guess, that was why he hadn’t been told of her situation. He was simply too kind for reality and the nature of hardships outside the safe haven that he had been born into. If Kioko had realized that he had enrolled in UAU, she would have been shocked and warned him away from what was to come to spare him from difficulties that would seek to strip him of everything he was now, but she didn’t know. His path was set—and so was hers.
She shook her head. “I have a place.” It was vague, but place was more suitable a term than apartment for the little loft above a used electronics store that she rented out. “I appreciate your offer, but I really do get by fine on my own. I’m not helpless or a charity case for your parents to write off on their taxes.” Her pride was certainly a roadblock for Michael’s efforts of aid, but so was her need for secrecy. She didn’t need the eyes of the society that had shunned her turned upon her any more closely than they already were. The prospect of such a thing made her remarks about his parents' hypothetical offer a little more barbed than she would have otherwise intended, so Kioko shifted away from that reasoning before her wicked tongue assailed him with something too sharp to take back.
“The whole genius thing wasn’t a rumor or just for show, you know. Billions of people who aren’t geniuses get by every day just fine. So I already have an advantage that most don’t.”
Had Kioko turned her gifts toward honest pursuits, it certainly would have been true. She could have built her own empire from scratch and clawed her way back to the top even if no one wanted her there. Instead, she had chosen to weaponize her mind and talents toward the downfall of her uncle’s empire. Michael had offered her a chance to take the high road, but her eyes were set on traveling its lower counterpart.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP

Kioko’s mind had always been faster than anything else around or within her. Her body included. The mercury overtook Kioko, an intended feat. A fluid motion brought her to crouching atop its surface. It had already been a transport for stolen goods, now it was a quicksilver caravan fit for the Quicksilver Queen.
No look was spared behind. Telekinesis required focus when used in more unusual ways—like whipping around sharply angled corners of an unfamiliar building built like a maze. Only sound told Kioko the assassins were still in pursuit. Such was not the case with the still unknown fourth pursuer.
In an effort to lose the other three, mercury rose up over Kioko’s hands and ankles, locking her into place along the serpent’s back before it rose upward. She ducked her head between her stationary arms to protect her face even as the serpent rose its own head and charged it through the ceiling above. Rubble rained down and Kioko surged upward to the second floor on the back of the beast.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Spiraling through the air hardly seemed to impact the goon. As a man whose surroundings constantly rattled when he inflicted his shake and quake tactics upon them, his brain and body were used to unsettling inertia. What he wasn’t used to was having his body constricted then poisoned—again. The serpent attached to his ankle spun with him, first together from momentum propelled by Hebi’s release, and then independently under Kioko’s command as it coiled along the man’s lanky body in the same way the tail had once been. He was even suspended in the air, keeping him away from the ground where it could transfer vibrations to them passively as he had done earlier.
Were he not fighting off fatigue and illness from being envenomed and suffering from crushing contusions, freeing himself from his current predicament might have been easier. As it were, it gave a brief reprieve to the women. One made use of it by blabbering out gratitude, apologies, and compliance. Kioko’s mouth opened too, but not to speak. Her jaw unhinged and instead of words flowing forth, mercury heeded her telekinetic beck and call. A silver deluge spilled past darkened lips.
Her mind was already working two steps ahead of the current moment. The threat was temporarily contained—not fully neutralized. If he turned his Quirk against the mercury ensnaring him, she could parts of it in contact with him, but others would explode off. If that happened, the girl would get hurt and add layers of complication to the encounter that Kioko didn’t want to deal with. Such a line of logic led to her current effort of erecting a quicksilver wall in front of Hebi that stood just over her height and spanned between what remained of the building walls on either side of the alley. Kioko hardened it into place so she didn’t have to maintain focus on it and the other metal on the battlefield at the same time.
“Jussst ssstay put,” Kioko hissed from the other side of the wall now between them Literally. High stress situations always loosened the control she had trained into her tongue from an early age to acquire the perfect articulation for someone of her former station. As did irritation, though those particular slip ups were often reserved for Sebastian.
Fractions of a second passed between order and evidence in favor of Kioko’s correct assumption. Ill and sore though he was, vibrations began to radiate through the Villain. He channeled it from his hands through his own body into the metal bonds. Kioko used its mercurial nature to absorb much of the energy and flux with its in its liquid state, but pieces were still vibrated off. They shot out like bullets, impacting into the wall she had created. Those that came toward her since she was still exposed were slowed by her mind then reversed back at the captive as projectiles. Exerting control and precision on multiple meant her hold on him lessened even as she caused him more damage in the process. It was the price of split focus. It wouldn’t be long until he freed himself. She couldn’t incapacitate him through crushing like the other girl at her current strength. Few alternatives were left.
She would have to kill him or be killed.
Notes & Tags: Makitori Hebi | Slight correction from earlier, Kioko's Quirk impacts Vitality specifically. He stays poisoned as long as the mercury is in contact with him. Since the snake bit him previously, it's directly in his bloodstream unless he can get rid of it or she removes it herself. The wall is in between Hebi and Kioko. Kioko's thought process obviously doesn't dictate what will happen in the thread, just what she currently thinks is necessary.

“Showtime.”
“Mmm,” was the only acknowledgement Rhys’ comment received from Kioko. Her focus was on the apparition darkening the monitor. Three lines of logic immediately presented themselves as an explanation behind the wraith. They were a mutant that couldn’t turn the effect off. Had the meeting taken place in the daytime, it would have been the least likely option due to how easy it would be to track and monitor someone like that. Utilizing a middleman would be safer.
The other two options were equally rooted in opposition and similarity. A veil of pre-existing hostility or a cloak of caution? Kioko risked her life every time she made such a judgment call—which was every time she took underground work on. If she didn’t well and truly need the money, the display would have cut the ties of her professional interest in favor of self-interest and preservation. As things were, Kioko descended from the throne of boxes and swept from the room, her quicksilver construct called to heel like a faithful dog at the whim of her mind. A display of power of Kioko’s own hidden beneath the falsehood of a pseudo-sentient companion.
“The code.”
The order served as an announcement to the Quicksilver Queen’s arrival, though nothing so mundane as words were needed to convey her presence. It demanded attention as thoroughly as Kioko demanded an answer with scant more effort on Kioko’s part other than existing in her normal state of being. She was a living monolith. Towering. Taciturn. Terrifying. The figure across the room might have been radiating actual shadowy tendrils, but there was no denying the darkness in the aura that emanated from obsidian and silver adorned titan.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Karma wormed its way through her ears, carried across the bar on the winds of others’ words. Judge not, lest ye be judged. A crime of which Kioko was exceedingly guilty—not to mention the actual crime that ignited conversation quite literally held behind her back in the first place. This was exactly why she didn’t like interlopers in her refuge. The regulars least had enough manners to save their comments for when they didn’t occupy the same space as Kioko.
A brow arched. Sharpened nails dug into the wooden bar top. Blood quickened—and in doing so, resonated with its kin in the environment for a heartbeat causing lights and electronics to flicker for the briefest of moments. The server returned with her drink, setting it down in front of her pointedly with a warning thud of glass against counter. “Here’s your drink, Kushiki-san.” Their look was plaintive and pleading. Silent begging for Kioko not to cause trouble. At least not on their shift.
Kioko smiled in a manner that bared her fangs. It wasn’t a kind expression. Today wasn’t the server’s lucky day. “Thank you.” Even if she had no intent of apologizing for what came next, she was at least grateful for the drink. One which she knocked back quickly before pivoting on her bar stool to face the table previously behind her, the wicked smile still in place.
“Oh do go on. You were just getting to the good part. So don't listen to your friend. Just say what you were going to say to my face instead,” she said with a trace of what almost sounded like amusement. Her voice was soft when she spoke. Quiet. Her words were controlled. Calm. And Kioko? Kioko was furious. A tempest incarnate beneath the mask.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Anxiety sheathed in even sharper irritation radiated from Kioko’s mind at the words spoken in a language known to few. She had asked for a code and was given saccharine pleasantries instead. The paranoia of her mind twisted its heightened analytical lens around the response to view it from every angle. Her immediate concern was the small talk being a stalling tactic because the woman didn’t have the code in question. A hallmark of a trap.
Silver eyes shifted to look past the shorter figure, scanning for potential backup waiting in the wings before returning to the guest of dishonor for the evening. The only thing tempering her mental control from unleashing a veritable bullet hell by exploding the praised pet in question was an earpiece veiled by tresses cascading over the shoulder on the same side and the man on the other end of the device who had remained behind to watch the security camera from afar. Kioko hated that his presence did exactly what she had avoided confirming it might do to his face, but she could not deny its hand in preventing a bloodbath.
Still, Kioko offered no reply to the question. Not only did she demand compliance of her orders for such an exchange, Latin was a dead tongue best left to clinically scientific designations and other dead things—like herself and what the name had once represented. That another flaunted their knowledge beyond the given code of speaking a language lost to all but the dedicated to her of all people showed Kioko that they knew nothing of her.
Then again, almost no one did.
Her stony reticence allowed space for the code to finally be given. Though it dulled wary ire, Kioko was hardly the type to not remain on edge. Nothing about her monolithic stature and the mental guard erected beyond it relaxed in spite of hints of dropped like breadcrumbs—Villains were notorious liars and scoundrels. Maintaining both of her defenses, and more, were necessary attributes of the role she performed among the underground, a role she was all business about. Anything less than her frigidly enigmatic aura and unyielding caution and she would have been dead more times than Sebastian could count. When the code was completed, Kioko finally replied. Albeit in Japanese except where the alias required otherwise.
“Present your request, Amicitia.”

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Kioko’s brow furrowed in the presence of the unexpected though the reaction was obscured beneath the mask adorning the upper half of her face. Rhea seemed to have resigned herself to a fate that Kioko had already eschewed in the planning stages. The public might have whispered the word monster in her wake during the hours she was Kioko, but even as the Villain Meliora, Kioko had not wanted to subject anyone to such a fate—not even on behalf of her crusade for vengeance. The degradation alone of someone forced into the position violated what was left of her morals, not to mention the danger of remaining in proximity to someone that willingly orchestrated the deaths of their own family. Kioko could only imagine what Suigetsu would do to those not of his own blood if he found them a hindrance or a danger to his goals. That being said, having someone on the inside for a longer period of time…
“That wasn’t the plan, but,” Kioko started, tentatively tasting the idea’s potential as it slithered out over her ophidian appendage, “-if the roles of espionage and escort are something you’d like to extend beyond the interview today, we could renegotiate the terms of our pact. You would stand to gain a financial boon from the actual job itself from my understanding of the pay attached to it. One that would likely mean you’d be set for quite a while in terms of money.”
Her conscience prickled at the back of her throat like she had swallowed a vial of acid, so she added, “But let me clear, it is an extremely dangerous route to go. Even considering our shared line of work at large. My original proposal requires only a one time interaction for the interview. With this knowledge, the decision is yours. As for the name of the club…”
Kioko paused for the briefest of moments to settle her distaste for what was to come. Even behind the mask, the rolling of her eyes was obvious. “Midas Manor.” The words spoken were in English. Not uncommon given it was the international language of business and the man they were after was entrenched in the tech industry. That didn’t mean Kioko found the name any less stupid.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
For everything Kioko knew and claimed to know, so much knowledge of which she was unaware formed the axis upon which the world spiraled. Meliora was already caught within the consequences of its orbit and her unfortunate collection of misinformation—she just didn’t know it yet. Time would remedy that. For now she persisted the only way she knew to be at the moment. Confident. Resolute. The embodiment of pride coming before the fall yet again. A repeating theme in her life as if she was destined to never learn the lesson misfortune sought to teach.
Her long stride, burdened with glorious purpose as it was, carried Kioko through a predefined path mapped out in her head based on schematics and intel—of the accurate variety this time. The creature-imitating construct undulated after Kioko along the same grid as its conjuror and its own purpose bent toward duality in nature once more. Backup and pack-mule. Supplies were passed off from one serpent to another.
The lesser of the two bore the weight of its designated obligation within quicksilver casing, leaving Kioko’s hands free to continue the unladylike act of rifling through the belongings of another. Still, she managed to bring a certain grace and gravitas to the art of burglarizing and when it came to her uncle, one wrong turn certainly deserved another. Though it was unfortunate for those caught in the middle of their cold war. Such was the case for the host of her current outing and the guard appointed to stop people from doing exactly what Kioko endeavored toward that evening.
With the first room on her itinerary stripped clean of resources with the speed and precious typical reserved for surgeons or assassins, Kioko and her ophidian accomplice absconded into the corridor and toward proverbial greener pastures. There were more materials to gather for future projects and a bomb to rig to sabotage those of her uncle. Little the two fated to meet that night realize that Kioko was headed toward the same staircase as yet another from the opposite direction, every step a piston punctuating her predatory prowl.

Again Rhys looked to Kioko. This time there was a reaction. Dark lips pulled back to bare blanched fangs in a wicked smile. “You’re applying to be the personal assistant for the CEO of Sovereign Technologies.” Kioko was throwing Rhea directly into a pit of vipers with far more ill intent than she had. Not that Rhea would know that. Kushiki Suigetsu’s alternate identity as a Villain himself and head of the Umbra Syndicate was known to very few. Kioko had found out the hard way. Through blood.
“As for who will be interviewing you, I don’t know.”
There was only so much intel Kioko could gather from the outside. She had only been able to find out about the job opening, if it could even be called that, through contacts Rhys still had within the company. It wasn’t the type of listing that would be promoted through traditional job boards. Obviously neither of them could or wanted to apply for the position. Hence why Rhea had been recruited.
“What we do know is that the CEO is looking for a… particular type of employee as a personal assistant. Think less secretary and more… escort. The interview isn’t taking place at one of their facilities. It’s being held at a gentlemen’s club.”
Even Kioko couldn’t help but roll her eyes at that.
“Hopefully I should be able to hear them as well if all goes as intended and regarding what information you're fishing for...” How did one say intel that would help bring down both an international tech based megacorporation and a criminal empire without scaring off the bait for the hook? By being vague. "We're looking for anything off the record on the CEO."

"We'll both be finding that out shortly."
Rhys’ eyes shifted to Kioko when Rhea mentioned mercury. The Quicksilver Queen herself gave no indication of a reaction to confirm how close to the truth the other serpent had slithered. Her assumptions held errors born of ignorance. Not that she could know better. The heavy metal toxic that formed the foundation of Kioko’s Quirk and body was far more potent than what was found in nature. Reactions weren’t delayed. They were instantaneous.
“The mechanics of how are irrelevant. Your best chance is to add the substance to a dark liquid or food that could obscure it. It has no odor or taste, but the texture could be detected if bitten into. I’ll leave that to your discretion. As earlier stated, physical contact is also an option if you can figure out a method for delivery in that regard. It must directly touch skin if you do go that route.”
The sound of the blinker interrupted Kioko’s instructions. The dark SUV took an exit, removing it from the steady stream of highway traffic in favor of no-less densely populated streets. They were in a business district. A high-end one at that. Kioko reached into the center console, this time retrieving a small earpiece to hand to Rhea.
“You’ll want this too. Your entry into this establishment is through a job interview. I’ll walk you through the process. This is also your best method of calling for extraction should it come to that.”

The rules of hypnosis. Kioko stifled a snort. Were they well and truly the same, the Siren’s Quirk would have had no effect on Kioko previously. Hypnosis only worked on those that willingly opened themselves up to being commanded. People predisposed to being gullible. Kioko was hardly that, yet the Quirk had found a small foothold to compel her into offering her name once before. However, it did lend credence to the question she had asked. The more susceptible the mind already was to outside influences regardless of origin, the more effective Rhea’s Quirk should be. In theory and a theory from her well-educated mind was nearly scientific proof in and of itself.
“I see.”
Kioko reached into her overcoat. There was a vial clutched within her hand when it resurfaced. Suspended within the glass was a small silver bead. Kioko passed it back to Rhea.
“As an educated guess on my part, we’ll run with lower inhibitions making your Quirk more effective depending on the request. Body and mind are innately connected. Lower the body’s defenses, lower mental resistance. What I just gave you will help with that and in turn, help with our goal.”
That Kioko could sense and monitor the liquid metal was just a boon in this case. One of which she felt no need to inform Rhea. “You’ll want to either have them ingest it somehow or have it make skin contact with the target. I suggest the former. You don’t want to accidentally touch it yourself.” Kioko didn’t want Rhea to touch it either. The last thing she needed was her temporary partner getting sick in the middle of a job.

“Acquire information through your particular brand of coercion.”
The real metric Kioko had for the mission at hand was by any means necessary, but that was a task that fell to Kioko if Rhea failed with her Quirk. There was no concern for Rhea’s well-being in not putting her on the more violent path to achieve their now shared goal. Kioko’s concern was success, and she simply didn’t believe Rhea would be up to more forceful methods. Not that Kioko wanted to dirty her own hands with it. Hence trying manipulation first.
“Route A,” Kioko said to Rhys, who turned the blinker on to merge into the lane headed toward a highway on-ramp. “How do things like lust or inebriation affect a person’s resistance to your Quirk,” she then asked of Rhea, as if abruptly changing the topic or if she was making Rhea the actual subject of the interrogation. If Rhea was following along properly, she would know that Kioko wasn’t. The shift was an indicator of the type of place they were headed to ferret out the source she wanted Rhea to interrogate.

The compound is made using Kioko's own mercury supply and is housed in a casing of the same base material to keep it stable. They can only be triggered using Kioko's Quirk remotely (or a Quirk that allows someone to sense and manipulate mercury in some way), or by manually twisting a series of rings around the outside that are marked with various runes into the correct pattern then pressing them down into the device. Setting the wrong pattern will cause them to immediately explode. Setting the correct pattern means they will explode in exactly sixty seconds. The explosion radius is small at only 3 feet (1m) and has the concussive and fiery results one would expect of an explosive device that size. However, the real danger comes from the vaporization of the mercury casing. Since it is made from Kioko's Quirk, the resulting fumes have the same poisonous effect as her Quirk. At their current strength, anyone that inhales the air in the vicinity of the explosion(s) suffers a temporary one rank decrease of their Vitality, though the effect will persist after the initial period of debuff for as long as they continue to breath the air.
