I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
“A mask and an alias go a long way,” Kioko offered in what was either a piece of helpful advice or sarcasm as it was the easiest and most obvious solution to Rhea’s paranoia. It was difficult to tell with Kioko. Her tone was as cold and stoic as ever. The only person there that might know her intent beyond herself was Rhys as he made his way back into the driver’s seat and put the car back into drive, maneuvering them out of the alleyway before anyone got suspicious over their idling.
He drove slowly through traffic and seemingly without purpose or direction. It was a stark contrast to both Rhea and Kioko who were already getting to the point of their less-than-impromptu meeting on Kioko’s part. “You sought aid not so long ago. Now I seek the same in a different situation. One that your particular skillsss would be useful for.” There was a slight hiss to the way Kioko said the word skills. An involuntary expression from her forked tongue of her lingering irritation over Rhea using her Quirk on her.
“If you help me with this, I will do what I can to assist you with your own quest. Quid pro quo. If you’re interested, I’ll explain more details on the way. If not, my companion here will pull you over and let you out near a potentially more lucrative corner given the type of daytime clientele you’re after.”
If anyone knew where the well-to-do were, it was Kioko.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Another night. Another warehouse. Business was booming. Sometimes literally, though Kioko had no indication of what this client’s request revolved around. As long as it didn’t violate what few morals she still had left, Kioko didn’t particularly care either. Blood money paid the bills better than any mundane job she could get with her civilian identity now.
Kioko shifted atop the crates of supplies she had brought with her. Well, with them. “Almost time,” Rhys said from across the room where he leaned against the wall. They had sequestered themselves in one of the back rooms with the materials, her laptop, and the quicksilver snake coiled around the base of the former. Kioko’s eyes flickered momentarily to her former bodyguard and chauffeur. Granted, former was starting to be less and less relevant as he had been following and driving her around since he had encountered Kioko paying respects at her mother’s grave.
“Will you leave if they’re late?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I have a certain reputation to uphold as…”
“As Meliora?”
“Yes.”
Her gaze returned to the screen that was monitoring the designated meetup location through a camera hidden earlier in the day. She mulled over the oddity of bringing pieces of her past into the present. How did Rhys reconcile the young girl set on being a Hero just like her mother with the villainous woman Kioko had become? He was surely yet another on the long list of people Kioko had disappointed in the last couple of years, but the way he looked at her didn’t match how he should have given the circumstances. Nothing had changed in his icy blue eyes when Kioko met them once more. She shifted again, this time out of a different kind of discomfort, then resumed waiting and watching for her newest client.

“They’re here.”
“Yes. I have eyes too, Rhys. You don’t have to be here for this.”
“You’d rather be alone?”
Kioko looked away from her laptop screen connected to a hidden camera she had planted in the warehouse earlier in the day in preparation for a business meeting and over to the man who had posed what he knew to be a complicated question. Abandoned warehouses were a far cry from the boardrooms she had been brought up in during her youth. There was an argument to be made for either being more cutthroat than the other depending on if one meant literal or figurative. Given that the current situation fell underneath the potential for the former, having backup was… not comforting, Kioko found comfort in so little these days, but perhaps steadying was more suitable. Not that pride would never allow her to admit such a thing.
“I’m not alone.”
The Silver Serpent’s golem that embodied the woman’s own moniker lifted its heavy metal head up from the floor. An illusion that it was a sentient creature and not the mercurial manipulations of its mistress’ mind. Rhys knew better, but the black market buyer wouldn’t. The trick had been a useful insurance in Kioko’s many shady dealings since her release from prison. Rhys shook his head but said nothing as Kioko rose from her makeshift throne situated in their hidden lookout higher within the building then proceeded to make her way down into the belly of the beast.
Her steps announced her presence. The telltale mimicry of dulled gunshots arising from sharp heels bearing hefty weight against a concrete floor. Beneath their reports hummed a softer sound of slithering from her undulating companion that was longer than she was tall but only half as thick. Kioko could have silenced their joint approach with a degree of effort, or a different fashion choice on her part, but such stealthy measures were better saved for dealing with prey. Not clients. Though in her line of work, it was a line easily crossed.
Beneath the mask and mantle of Meliora, Kioko gazed down upon the other woman wondering if she would be one of the few that crossed said line. Her pondering wasn’t evident on the exposed portion of her face nor her slitted eyes, as icy as they were indifferent to the other Villain’s presence. Her voice matched her eyes in stoic coolness when she spoke, words loosed from forked tongue past wicked ivory fangs that contrasted against dark lips that were typically the last line of defense for her trademark reticence.
“The code.”
It wasn’t a question. It was a demand. Proof was needed to confirm that the woman was the one who had the necessary connections to arrange such a meeting. Said proof would have been given when the meeting was first arranged through the use of a burner phone long since discarded. Only memory held evidence of what words were now needed to make the desired pact with the monolithic patron that towered before the wanting witch.

Rhys returned the gesture with a nod of his own before waiting for Rhea to put away her things. Gentleman that he was, or perhaps used to serving a different serpent, he reached for her collected belongings to carry them. “Allow me.” Given his offer was met only with minor hesitation, he took up the burden and began to lead Rhea back to the viper’s temporary nest.
Kioko saw their approach from the rear view mirror she had watched like a hawk since Rhys’ departure. Her maw opened to allow a stream of quicksilver to spill past her blackened lips. It twisted itself into an ornate mask that she donned to obscure a portion of her visage. Her particular brand of Villain conducted itself akin to a masquerade of mystery, unlike Rhea who saw fit to move more openly.
When performer and cargo carrier arrived at the vehicle, Rhys set the parcels down to open the back driver’s side door. He lifted Rhea’s gear one more time and slid it across the leather seats before stepping aside so that Rhea could get in. “After you.” Kioko continued to watch the proceedings through the rearview mirror as she spoke, “You’re remarkably easy to find. Shouldn’t that concern you given your other line of work?”

Kioko eyed Michael’s hands warily as they moved to the table. Her own tale had overstimulated her mind. Physical touch, especially that from a place of kindness, would shatter the battered walls of her restraint. What lay beyond them was anyone’s guess. Would it be wrath lashing out or despair breaking down? Fortunately for them both, they weren’t going to find out. Michael wrangled his hands before himself. Kioko relaxed enough that she leaned forward to begin poking at her soup with a spoon though it was never lifted to her lips in the process. They were otherwise occupied forming her reply to Michael’s kindhearted offer.
“To what end?”
Her gaze shifted from the table to meet Michael’s. She could feel it even if she couldn’t see it. Compassion and pity from others had always weighed heavier on her than the scrutiny and scorn she had become used to in the glances snuck her way over the last couple of years.
“They did what any high society family would do to save face if one of their own turned out to be a murderer. The nature of the circumstances aside, even if your family could sway mine, why would I want to go back to people that clearly don’t want me? If they caved to social pressure, it’d just be to save face again. Not out of any concern or love for me. That died with my mother and brother.”
She ignored the fact that her father hadn’t died in her storytelling. Nor did she include the fact that she hellbent on revenge. To put her in a room with her uncle was to sign either one or both of their death warrants. They might have been socialites, fallen perhaps in Kioko’s case, to the rest of the world in daylight hours, but both lived dual lives with Villain as their alternate identity. So there was no happy ending for Kioko. Her tale could only end where it had started—in blood.

Night had long since drenched the backstreets and forgotten alleyways of Tokyo in a sea of shifting shadows that fled from the neon landscape of main thoroughfares. Like the darkness of the streets she stalked, Kioko shied away from the light as if it had ostracized her from its presence as thoroughly as her family had done. Fitting, perhaps, since the latter had spurred her into action that night under the mantle of Meliora.
Her vengeance was enacted as a one-woman-war. Much like actual war there was a specific focus for her wrath, but there were also those caught in the crossfire as collateral damage. Laboratories, testing facilities, warehouses, and today, a material supply company. Any and all that had ties to supporting Sovereign Technologies were fair game to the huntress to draw her ever closer to her primary prey—Kushiki Suigetsu, her uncle.
Alas, that was a hunt for another day. Tonight, Kioko’s focus was set on the building before her. Intel said that the company only utilized a basic alarm system. Kioko located the exterior fuse box and severed the connection for the security’s power. It was quicker and easier than hacking into the feed. Had she not been planning on absconding with materials for her own projects, she would have brought her laptop to do just that.
Stealth remained important in spite of a perceived lack of guard patrols or onlookers of another variety. Jaw unhinged allowing for a serpent of mercury to slither past forked tongue, fangs, and lips blacker than the night sky above. It engulfed the exterior of a large window, forcing its way into any gaps natural settling had caused between glass and building. Its presence both reinforced the delicate material from breaking while simultaneously prying it free of the pane.
The sheet was left wrapped safely in some of the liquid metal and stored outside where it was out of the way to avoid the loud and obvious sound of shattering glass. What remained of the mercury formed a platform from the snake’s tail that lifted Kioko up and through the emptied pane. A single source of sound came from the entire affair—stiletto heels on tile floor.

Rhys had been warned of the woman’s abilities in advance. Knowledge to refine will. Whether or not it was successful in aiding his would be unclear from anyone gauging either his physical or verbal response. He remained rigid and alert, yet provided Rhea with a direct answer to her commanding query.
“She said, and I quote: if that harpy asks for payment, offer aid in helping her track down certain individuals previously mentioned provided an accord of mutual assistance is arranged with a chance of further compensation in a more traditional sense based on future circumstances.”
Depending on the type of people Rhea rubbed elbows with, it was unlikely she encountered many that spoke as pompously or as formally. Especially ones she had mentioned her own hunt to recently. Kioko had hoped that would be enough to pique the other woman’s interest without having to accost her in public herself.

The oddity of watching someone with a balloon for a head consume, well, anything, was nearly enough to shake Kioko from her morose state. Perhaps if there had been more to observe beyond the sounds of normal drinking and the disappearance of liquid, she might have been inclined to set aside both her dour mood and her tea in favor of curiosity and inquiries of her own. As it were, the silence stretched so long that it seemed as if she might not continue, but after another sip of her own beverage, she shifted to return her cup to the table and renew her poor bardic attempt in a voice so low that only Michael could hear her—and just barely.
“My father took my mother’s death hard. We all did. But he let it consume him and eventually his actions in the aftermath of her passing had him removed from the family and the grounds. He was only related to the core of the Kushiki family by marriage to my mother and by the existence of my brother and myself. My brother wasn’t doing well handling things either. Our father’s expulsion seemed to be a tipping point for him.”
At least part of a tipping point. Kioko could not explain to Michael the second aspect of what triggered the incident forthcoming from her mouth. “He… blamed me for the situation. For reasons that are… unclear.” Unclear only because she couldn’t reveal the full truth. To expose her uncle’s hand in the situation would also unveil the methods she had employed to find out the truth in the last year. She trusted Michael as much as she could given the circumstances, but not enough to risk going back to jail.
“He ended up attacking me. At first I thought it was just a hormonal teenage boy blowup under the pressure of everything. He was younger than me and I was only seventeen at the time. But it became clear that he… he was trying to kill me. So I had to use my Quirk to defend myself.”
Her eyes had shifted away from Michael to the ceiling above where he couldn’t see the shadows of her past crossing over them in the form of unshed tears. “I didn’t mean to hurt him. I just wanted to stop him. However, my Quirk is dangerous to other people even at the best of times. At the worst of times, such as back then, it’s deadly. And so he died and I lived, even if I wish more than anything it was the other way around now.” She was silent after the last line. An admission she had neither been actively conscious of nor willing to reveal had slipped past in the stream of history. She moved on. To linger on it was to allow Michael to linger on it as well, which she did not want.
“Anyway, I was put on trial for involuntary manslaughter as a minor. I was found guilty and served a year in prison. During that time, my uncle took over the company and disavowed me from the family. I got out last year and now here I am. So to answer the question that started it all… no, I’m not fine.”
As her tale ended, their server turned up with food in hand. Or rather, on tray. She transferred it to the table. It was a good thing she had ordered soup. Kioko wasn’t particularly hungry after her confession.

“Drive to the next street. Out of sight of this one,” Kioko ordered from the passenger seat as she caught sight of her quarry through the tinted window. Nothing had seemed to change about the dark SUV or the man that drove it. The familiarity of it all was nearly overwhelming to Kioko in its absurdity. The only things keeping her steady that evening were purpose and the fact she had sat in the front seat instead of the back where she had ridden almost every day for about eighteen years before her life came crashing down.
The driver obeyed, maneuvering the large vehicle through light traffic until it was well past the small gathering of people milling around a street musician. No, musician was generous. Or perhaps lacking. Kioko knew the term and alias of Siren to be more fitting given the nature of the woman’s Quirk—one she had dared to use on Kioko at an underground meeting months prior. A meeting at which the other woman did not hide her identity. Kioko found that foolish, but it certainly made tracking her down easier. Especially when compared to the hoops Kioko required people to jump through to find her when she bore the mantle and moniker of Meliora.
“Here. Turn.”
The SUV slowed to a stop within an alley nestled between various businesses that made up exactly the kinds of surroundings one might find in Shibuya. The engine was left idling. “Will you be okay here?” Kioko snorted at the question. “Please, Rhys. According to the news, I would be the threat one bumps into in an alley, no?” He didn’t seem convinced, but he opened the door and slid out, closing it behind him before he disappeared in the direction they had come from.
So it was the Rhys, not Kioko, approached Rhea on the street as she crooned away. He waited for her to finish with arms folded across his expansive chest in a pose reflective of his past employment as a bodyguard in the Kushiki family’s employ. Only rather recently had he informed Kioko that was no longer the case. Now he was once more at her personal beck and call for a price that far outweighed the value of money—revenge. Once Rhea finished, he’d draw closer and address the songstress.
“Excuse me, ma’am. My employer would like a word with you.”

It was remarkable how many people Kioko had met in her lifetime that thrived so heavily off banter and getting in the last word that they’d risk their own lives by delaying a getaway just to tease or taunt. At least this one seemed particularly good-natured compared to some of the others she had encountered. For this he received an eye roll rather than verbal retaliation or physical hostility. It wasn’t as if Kioko could afford to waste time either. She had put too much stock of her own in Chirp’s estimate of return. There was work to be done and quickly.
Chirp’s departure left Kioko free to raid a cabinet that had once been behind him hosting an array of chemicals. Two were procured from the shelves: nitric acid and ethanol. Combined with her own mercury and a few of the parts acquired earlier to form casing and trigger mechanisms, mercury fulminate bombs were a thing of ease to create. It was a good thing too as Kioko needed to find her exit soon.
One of the devices was planted in the wake of her path to extraction. The rest were secured within what remained of her serpentine familiar. Those, along with Kioko herself, slithered out of a window further down the corridor outside the room—and well away from the explosion where she and Chirp had once been. A final act to both distract and deter any would be pursuers and destroy any physical evidence of their misdeeds that evening beyond the detonation. Given that she had already taken care of their digital tracks, it was unlikely anyone would ever be able to fully pinpoint that she had specifically been there. Except for Chirp and his all-too-knowing Quirk that she might have killed him for using on her had she known.

Zipper was a terrible name. Especially given the girl’s previous inability to zip it upon initially meeting Kioko. Her rambling had finally tapered off into silence though; silence with a dash of monotony from repetitive manual labor in the wake of an apology. For what, Kioko wondered. Her intrusion? Or was it sympathy. Either way, it was met only with a soft thrum of acknowledgement from the titan as she watched Zipper work with glassy eyes indicative of someone not fully present in the moment.
Her thoughts were elsewhere. Memories scrolling past the marquee of her mind. The last time she had come to the memorial had been with Kenta. She had missed the year after due to her incarcerated status and then the one after that from guilt. There was a chance she wouldn’t live to see the next day of remembrance—or even tomorrow if her uncle had his way. All Kioko had was this moment. She sank into it in spite of her lack of privacy. Deeper still until she had forgotten Zipper’s presence altogether.
Kioko was unaware of when the girl left. She didn’t particularly care as she shook herself free of reverie. When she turned to leave, she found that she still wasn’t alone. A tall broad-shouldered man dressed in a black suit blocked her path back down the hill. Kioko tensed and did not relax even after the familiarity of the figure hit her.
“What are you doing here?”

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
“It shows,” came the retort from a completely dry Kioko. The benefits of being a genius and understanding technology. From witnessing to predicting, her eyes and mind worked fast at unraveling the situation at hand. Both what the tech’s function was and the result of application. The snake had shifted at the last second, turning its tail into an umbrella for Kioko before the sprinklers could do Chirp’s dirty work for him.
“It also seems you can only make sparks with yourself.”
All the better. Electricity set Kioko on edge, and not in the fun way. A decision was made for her in the wake of such a reminder. She had collected enough components for not one, not two, but three different design ideas. They were sheltered from the rain within her golem, much like herself, but it was time to put them to work for her.
Chirp was lucky that Kioko didn’t decide to utilize him as a test subject. She needed living guinea pigs, yes, but she’d rather trial and error her way through prototype testing on people that genuinely deserved misery. Chirp had yet to show Kioko he fell into that category. Maybe she would just wait out the rest of the hour to both see if Chirp had been telling the truth and to have more suitable test subjects. Surely she could rig mercury fulminate explosives in that amount of time. Kioko smiled at the thought. The act bared a set of vicious fangs. It was not a kind expression.
“Perhaps you should leave if you’re done here.”
The advice, on the other hand, was kind given what she had in mind. Little hints of the Hero she had once been set to be. Though that path was long behind her now.
