Curiouser and curiouser.
The bird was more beak than bite. But had he chirped out his offer to the right person? Inquisitiveness had always been a weakness of Kioko’s rivaling that of Achilles—along with her penchant for associating with charismatic fools like Sebastian or soft-hearted fools like Renjirou.
Kioko was neither a fool nor soft-hearted. She would allow her curiosity to lead her into a potential fray, yes, but she was not unarmed. Then again, was she ever really?
Wraith wrapped in black and masked by quicksilver slipped into the room like the silent shadow she was. Once more her voice interrupted Chirp’s work, this time live and in person. “You seem remarkably certain of your information.” Long-legged steps punctuated by the sharp echoes of stiletto heels were taken with a deliberate slowness that brought Kioko closer to Chirp. Claw-capped fingertips dragged across a tabletop with the telltale grating of metal on metal. Deep grooves were left behind. She had not relied on her own strength to leave her mark, but that of the mercury which formed the claws.
“You are either well informed or a confident idiot.”
She half-turned to keep the man in sight even as she began to search the room for the parts she needed for her current project or wanted for potential future endeavors. “If it is the latter and you get in my way, you will not live to regret it,” she added almost casually. As if it was an afterthought. It wasn’t. She wasn’t there to play games with a petty thief. Not that anyone rivaled Kioko’s levels of pettiness.

The most unladylike sound emanated from Kioko. A snort. It was the complete antithesis to her normally regal composure. “Am I okay?” It was an absurd question. But he didn’t know that, did he?
Kioko crossed her arms once more. There was a subtle difference in the motion this time. It was less an act of keeping the world at bay and more a motion to hold all of the shattered pieces of her former self together by hugging them more tightly to her own body. From that position, she shrugged.
“Sure. Why not. I’m okay.”
She turned from Michael again, clearly ready to walk off. To run away from the conversation in a very literal sense. But she knew him. Or at least, she used to know him. If she ran off now, he’d just chase after her like a lost puppy until he could fix whatever was wrong.
But there was nothing left to fix.
She turned back around. “Look. It’s a long story. I’ll tell you if you really want to hear.” She would tell him part of it. No one knew the full story. Not even the two other Nobodies. “But I’m going to need a drink to do it.” And that meant the usual place.

Kioko was left with an incredulously arched eyebrow in wake of the unexpected before Muffin’s exit stage left. Her features reverted back to their frosty facade when she realized Michael’s attention was upon her once more. Complete this time with her hand withdrawn to join her arms in folding standoffishly across her chest as she gave him a pointed once-over to see if he was making light of her situation with his question.
It was a normal inquiry for one old friend to ask another, but nothing about Kioko’s more recent, and highly publicized, past had been normal. One would think that gauging Michael’s intentions would be more difficult for a lack of expression to read, but his genuine nature radiated outward through body language and tone. Kioko detected no malice nor ulterior motive. Only a genuine curiosity, and perhaps concern, stemming from the wellspring of a softheart.
Fool.
She couldn’t help the thought, but that was exactly how he had ended up in his earlier predicament. At the very least, she uncrossed her arms. A gesture of lowered hostility more than lowered guard.
“You really don’t know, do you?”
Typically those in their families’ social circle in the upper echelons of Japanese society hungered for a good scandal. That he wasn’t nose deep in gossip and rumors surrounding her fall from grace spoke as much, if not more, in favor of Michael’s goodness than his actions in saving the girl’s cat earlier. Or perhaps he really was an oblivious fool.

Raiding locations tied to Sovereign Technologies was more than a pastime for Kioko. Every break-in, every theft, every destruction of property was a small taste of revenge. A drip-feed to fuel vengeful addiction—and it was time for another hit.
There was an obvious pattern to their warehouses and laboratories being ransacked. Kioko was smart though. No evidence was left behind and her alibis on those nights were solid. Blood money paid for innocence just as easily as it did anything else on the black market. Unfortunately, her uncle was smart too. He had begun hiding the company’s interests by working with other organizations or divesting into shells.
As if that would stop her.
Or anyone else that just happened to need their own fix for one reason or another. Kioko watched an intruder through the facility’s security system. She had fed a closed-loop of static footage into the recorder while commandeering the live feed through her own laptop moments before the other thief had arrived. There would be no digital trace for either of them. Kismet for the other, and possible blackmail material for her. One never knew when they might need evidence of another’s crimes.
Intercoms in the room Chirp rummaged in flickered to life bringing. Kioko’s cold voice followed, made metallic by the tinny aspect of the speakers. “My, my. You are quite far from home, little bird. Perhaps you should fly away before something bad happens.” A warning. Kioko didn’t want to have to fight with some two-bit scavenger for the parts she needed for her own work. Though she wouldn’t mind someone else taking the fall for the theft of said parts.

Were her back not already turned and Michael not actively plummeting to the ground mere seconds after committing his sin again, the eye twitch in response to his preferred method of addressing her would have been far more noticeable this time around. She pivoted back, her venomous dagger of a tongue unsheathed to wage war on behalf of her pride. Verbal blades were staid by self-sacrifice. Good natured hearts were always punished by the universe. Kioko had witnessed proof of that through Renjirou over the years. Heavens and hells knew neither she or Sebastian qualified as good, so they often made each other suffer instead.
Long-legged stride brought Kioko back to Michael’s side. She extended her hand down to him to help him up, an olive branch of cold slender fingers and black nails carved to sharp points. A seemingly friendly gesture in a not-so-friendly package.
“Still letting being nice get the best of you, it seems.”
The little girl and cat still tarried at the edges of Kioko’s peripheral. She was either brave or stupid. Or maybe just grateful. “Thank you, Mr. Balloon! Tell him thank you, Muffin!” The cat stared blankly at Michael and Kioko before opening its mouth wide. A meow didn’t come out as expected. Instead, it was the deadpan voice of a middle-age woman working at a diner in the 1900s that happened to have one hell of a chain smoking habit.
“Thank you.”
Then the girl, with Muffin in tow, skipped off.

The indifference composing Kioko’s usual facial facade cracked for a heartbeat. Whether it was a wince offered for Michael’s predicament or a grimace on her own behalf at hearing such a childish moniker attributed to her depended on perspective. Could any of the girl she had once been when Michael last knew her still remain? Or had she truly become what the media had painted her as. Kioko offered nothing else to confirm or deny either alternative as her countenance smoothed back into a mask of stoicism.
Part of Kioko had always wondered whether or not Michael had been real and not a figment of her young mind. An imaginary friend of sorts. He did have a balloon as a head. What child didn’t like balloons? But perhaps it had been more than that. He had been in her life once and then he was gone as she grew up. It was very imaginary friend behavior, truth be told. Yet here he was in her present. Hanging upside down from a tree right in front of her face.
“I suppose some people just don’t grow out of monkeying around.”
She couldn’t help herself.
“Nice to see you, I guess. It looks like you have this under control though, so I’ll leave you to it. Bye.”
He was probably fine. Being a bit of an airhead, possibly literally as Kioko didn’t know if there was anything beneath the latex, would work in his favor if he fell. As long as something sharper than her wit didn’t get in his way. But surely that wouldn’t happen, right? And if it did, was it really any business of Kioko’s after all these years?

Serpentine eyes lifted to the sky to avoid the weeping child as Kioko strode past. She was very nearly free of any sort of obligatory burden when a voice from behind beckoned her curiosity and gaze back over her shoulder. A shock of recognition rippled through her monolithic frame. Part of having been declared a prodigy in her youth had been because Kioko’s mind was a veritable steel trap when it came to retaining memories and information. Yet even someone not so gifted as to be deemed a genius would have difficulty in not remembering someone with a vibrant red balloon for a head—even if the last memory of them had been from pre-school years.
She halted then turned to retrace her steps right up to the underneath of the tree. “Michael?” Her incredulous tone underscoring an already icy voice would be understandably startling for any not prepared for it. At that moment, the little girl and her feline at the very least fell into that category. The former yelped causing the latter to jump up from its resting spot and then farther up until it was now perched on the ledge of the roof and, unfortunately, farther from Michael’s grasp. Perhaps it had not been a cat’s own curiosity in the old adage that had gotten it killed after all.

Twilight graced the skies with the dusky pastels of evening’s approach. Lamp posts flickered on along one of the many streets between UAU and Noyote, her favored location to rest her weary bones, to combat the coming darkness. They were well lit paths that Kioko would have been more familiar with had her life’s plan not gone up in a spectacular inferno. Tragic, but spectacular nonetheless for those that had followed the scandal on the news over two years ago.
She traversed them now with the intent to track down the worthless mooch that was Sebastian Sinclaire. Kioko had a bone or several to pick with him over their newest arrangement—one that left her footing the bill for his cellphone. What Kioko hadn’t agreed to was all of the strange charges populating the invoice. Charges Kioko assumed came from one Sebastian shenanigan or another. Of course, she wasn’t allowed on university grounds. She wasn’t a student and there was the little issue of her being a known murderer. Kioko was the embodiment of a security risk by any metric. How fortunate for Sebastian. Not that Kioko expected to find him there. He was hardly ever where he was supposed to be, but someone near the school might provide her with the info she needed to track him down.
What Kioko didn’t expect to encounter on her quest as she stalked with the predatory gait of an apex hunter down the street was the panic cries of a young girl in tears beneath the awning elevated high above the door of a tea shop—or the rotund cat contentedly roosting upon said awning far out of the reach of anyone sans a giant courtesy of the branches from a nearby tree. Tall though she was, Kioko was not technically a giant. Even with the boost from the stilettos she wore, she wouldn’t be able to reach the cat. Not without her Quirk or climbing the twisted arboreal ladder. One involved more jail time. The other involved effort on behalf of a snotty child to whom she had no connection. Kioko wanted nothing to do with either option and fully intended to ignore the girl.
Fate, it seemed, had other plans.
It always did.

Bailed. Again. What’s new?
Kioko looked away from one of two messages she had received that evening. Both had been sent with the result of disappointing her even if that had not been the intent. If she could not count on the pair that sent them, then there was well and truly no one left to turn to when Kioko was alone or worse—lonely.
She stowed the phone away on her person. Where exactly was anyone’s guess with her form fitting attire and aptitude for stealthy actions. Her reward for once again suppressing the rising despair from the wellspring of her soul’s remains was a long draw from the wine glass before her. Shu had introduced her to this particular blend at their last private meeting. It had replaced vodka as her drink of choice whenever she elected to disgrace Noyote with her presence. Unless Sebastian was being more irritating than usual on any given night where they attended the establishment together. Hard liquor was required for those gatherings. Kioko rarely ventured to the bar without him or Renjirou though. Until lately thanks to messages like those they had sent moments before.
The pity party held in the back booth reserved for the trio near the wall filled with photographs and memories beneath Noyote's iconic iron-wrought sign bearing its name was apt to continue for the rest of the evening unabated. Sebastian, at the very least, would likely find a rather scathing text from the early hours of the morning if she continued. That was his problem now, not hers. Kioko finished off the rest of the dry red that was as deep and dark as the crimson lipstick she had chosen to wear then flagged down one of the servers across the dimly lit space for another round. Having grown up in Noyote during the daylight hours before she was old enough to drink once it made the day-to-night shift from cafe to bar, the staff all knew her well.
“Hey, Kushiki-san. Ready for another drink? If you wait for a couple of minutes, happy hour will start.”
“Happy hour? Since when does Noyote do happy hour?”
“Barkeep thought it’d go well with testing out karaoke.”
“What?”
Kioko was suddenly grateful Sebastian wasn’t there.

Night had rendered the backstreets of Tokyo into a grayscale landscape. Disused alleyways and other forgotten thoroughfare were drenched in dim and dark alike as stark contrast to their neon-lit counterparts populated by bustling businesses and their late-hour patrons. No such souls traversed the back roads. They were too full of light and life to find themselves arm-in-arm with the shadows. Kioko, however, was unburdened by such trivial luxuries.
The Silver Serpent had obscured the sheen of her metallic silhouette with obsidian garments to better blend into the void as she stalked her prey. Every facet draped in cloth, leather, and lace—except her face. Upon it an ornate mask of mercurial bones and filigree was secured.
Veiled in every manner that she could be, Kioko prowled after a lone figure making their way to a location still undisclosed to the huntress. The goal that eventide was to discover one of the many safehouses or drop zones for the Umbra Syndicate. Her quarry would lead her right to it after weeks of stalking. Alas, sometimes the one doing the hunting became the hunted instead.
The figure disappeared in the blink of an eye. Except Kioko had not blinked her serpentine eyes at all. They were simply there and then they weren’t. Kioko pressed herself deeper into the inky pools that clung to the same wall—only for said wall to abruptly shatter in a shower of debris.
Loud though the self-contained explosion was, the limited scope of its size and effect prevented it from being clearly overheard above ambient nightlife and traffic more than a street or two over. The rush of life consumed the attempt to end one. And it was only just an attempt. Kioko had felt the vibrations just in time to expel and position a shield of mercury between herself and the wall. The concussive force had still thrown her forward, but aside from bruising, she was only a little worse for wear. How long that would remain the case was on a short timer as a large hand clamped down around her throat and lifted Kioko bodily from the ground until she was face to face with a wicked grin and wild eyes belonging to an entity even taller than she.

Were it not for the amalgamation of curiosity and a thirst for vengeance along with general spite and a hefty superiority complex that cobbled together what passed as a personality, Kioko could have obtained her freedom just beyond the emergency exit. That was what it was there for, after all. It just required a choice. The left was an escape from the turmoil. The right was back into the fray.
Kioko hesitated at the threshold of the decision before turning down the corridor and along the path that led back inside the heart of the building. Her compulsion was only due in part to the voice emanating from the earpiece. Duty fulfilled the rest; she still had to track down and interrogate the Umbra Syndicate sycophants that had integrated themselves among the proverbial cannon fodder participating in the haphazard heist. Though judging by the explosions heard earlier, perhaps it wasn’t so proverbial a title.
Her entrance received no grand welcome from either the mystery voice nor hostiles. Unbeknownst to Kioko, they were in the thick of a cat-and-mouse warfare of their own. “You weren’t at the exit,” she stated in her usual quiet monotone to the earpiece beckoned closer to her fanged mouth via the mercury casing around it. “Unlike you, I stick to my word and I have a job to do here.” Granted, the job was revenge and it was for herself, but it still counted in her mind.
Predatory steps stalked in the direction of the most noise. All the wit in the world, and yet Kioko was unwittingly putting herself directly into the epicenter of destruction caused by the criminal master mindless duo as she rounded the corner. Sho was the first thing she saw at the storefront. The customary scoff was given.
“You again.”
But he wasn’t the only figure in play. More than enough bodies, moving or otherwise, remained for Kioko’s guard to rise in the form of mercury from her mouth. The metal encircled her in undulating ribbons of silver to act as a defense against those that couldn’t just phase right through them. As far as she knew, that was everyone but Sho.

Kioko sensed the drone before she saw it as she rose to the roof. Dodging such a blast would have been impossible on solid ground under her own speed. Fortunately, she wasn’t on solid ground nor relying on her body. As ever, it was her mind’s power saving Kioko from an untimely end. That seemed to happen a lot.
The heavy metal beneath her feet gave way as the beam tore through the building. Kioko plummeted with it in a brief free fall before the platform and its occupant stabilized, and in doing so, escaped the blast. Debris was another story as it rained down upon her. The strength of the explosion has rendered most into small enough pieces that they were more nuisance than anything else. Kioko wasn’t so blessed by fate for that to be the case with all of the rubble though. A larger piece impacted her right shoulder, bruising and dislocating it upon impact. Muffled scream escaped as a hiss and her rage manifested in wrathful resonance.
Blood called to blood. Of course, Kioko’s blood was mercury. The same could be said for the very thing helping give life to the circuitry within the drone. Until Kioko brought it under her sway and shredded delicate internal parts to render the drone inert with but a thought. One which paved the way for another. If Kioko could draw drones within the proximity of her mental control, she could theoretically disable the bulk of them.
Her initial plan had been to chart an escape path out of harm’s way, but something older stirred within her chest. A different path. The one she had walked before her entire world had come crashing down. Not that Kioko would ever admit to that being her reason for staying. No. It was solely for spite that she would end these mechanical monstrosities as retribution for daring to attack her. What’s more, she could scavenge for parts in the aftermath. Materials didn’t come cheap and her income consisted solely of infrequent but hard earned blood money these days.

“Tempting.”
And it was. Sebastian begging and barking was exactly the kind of thing she’d record and hold over his head forever, but Kioko composed herself enough to wave her hand toward Sebastian’s side of the booth. “Sadist though I am, exhibitionist I am not.” Whether Sebastian himself was or not was debatable considering the looks he had drawn with his rather willing display. It was still more likely that he was just a shameless mooch though. Either way, Kioko was already giving him one thing he wanted and that was more than generous by her standards.
“This is a one time deal. If you break it or lose it, I’m not replacing it.” She could theoretically fix it should the former befall it, but she wasn’t about to offer that to him because he’d probably see just how far he could push her services. “Now, I could just give you money for the phone, but I know you well enough to not do that. You’d probably blow it on smoothies or gacha games. And I assume I have to put you on my plan since you can’t and won’t hold a job any better than your brain can hold a thought. So should I also assume that I need to pick the phone out myself or do you have one in mind?” Meaning, had Sebastian put any thought or planning into getting a phone beyond just asking her for one?

Clouds were not the only ill omen heralding things far more dire than spring storms. Portent and puppet of higher powers in her own way, Kioko prowled across the urban cityscape of the oversized Tokyo ward. Her gait was possessed of something others with their invisible strings would soon be found to be lacking — purpose.
Pedestrian filled crowds and the shadows of an impending dusk cloaked her one woman warpath. Alas, as she often did, Kioko had the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The earth shuddered beneath her feet even at such a distance to be safe from the man-made meteor that impacted up the road from her current position. No amount of curiosity could quell the obvious conclusion lancing through her mind far faster than those of other passersby. Something was wrong. Dangerously wrong. Shipping containers didn’t simply hurtle from the heavens.
Hero she was not, but neither was Kioko the type to being calculated into the statistics of civilian casualties in the aftermath of whatever calamity sought to be unleashed from Pandora’s newest box. She stepped into an alley to don the mantle of Meliora by discarding the hooded trench coat she had been wearing to conceal her garments as part of a preexisting plan to keep her identity secret on her own hunt had she cornered her quarry that evening. Mercury spilled forth to cover and conceal the upper part of her face. Tendrils from the mask crept into her hairline to further secure waves of thick silver hair bound by braids on the other side of her head. Maintaining unobstructed visions was just as important as remaining anonymous and almost as important as being stylish. Both of her identities had a certain reputation to keep, after all. One never knew when Gyrfalcon was lurking around a corner.
The assassin was, of course, nowhere to be seen when Kioko peered back around the nearest corner to scope out the situation. Kioko almost wished he was there so he could deal with the nightmare unfolding across the scene. One Kioko had seen in odd parallels of her own dreams. Only she had been at the epicenter of disaster and despair. Of metal and mourning. Pain not of the physical variety rippled through her amazonian form, but empathy was culled quickly in favor of survival as bodies dropped around her under a spray of projectiles issued not from the tortured soul, but the drones that escorted him.
Another deluge of silver ushered past serpent tongue and teeth blocked rounds that pierced another and carried through with Kioko squarely in their trajectory. Had their momentum not been slowed by what had essentially amounted to a meat shield, she might have had the dishonor of a disheveled alley being her mausoleum. That was beyond unacceptable. She shook the rounds free of her metal and pocketed them for later inspection even as she tucked herself away behind cover while others began to react and act in bolder ways than she. It was a momentary respite. The mercury moved down far enough that Kioko could step up onto it before it lifted her up and toward the rooftops for a better vantage point on both the drones and the abomination of metal and flesh.

Given her default expression around Sebastian was always a scowl to some degree, there was no reason for Kioko to wrangle her features to keep her feelings further under wraps as Sebastian accused her of those of love before he played show-and-tell with his injury and associated misfortunes. For all he knew, she was just annoyed by his previous claims and display, but those involved in putting him in harm’s way were lucky he hadn’t revealed any useful information about their persons to track them down through. Kioko’s evenings were often dedicated to revenge, after all, and it didn’t always need to be on her own behalf.
A beckoning gesture to the server who had approached then thought it best to linger while Sebastian was busy flashing the bar his bandages finally saw Kioko receive her drink — delivered straight into her hands this time. All the while, her eyes never left Sebastian. In part because she didn’t want him stealing her drink again. She took a sip, letting the silence hang heavy in the aftermath of his declarations. The boy she had known who grew into the so-called man before her now was possessed by the oddest sort of fortune. He was somehow both the luckiest and unluckiest person Kioko knew. Though the latter part was entirely his own fault. He was lazy and liked trouble because it was interesting. It was his somehow innate favorable state of fate that got him out of the situations he got himself into most of the time. So too was it how he had likely gotten into UAU when Renjirou, the best of the trio, though not the brightest, had tried his hardest and failed. A point which Kioko now threw in Sebastian’s face as further defense for not buying him a phone to save his backside.
“Strange. It sounds to me that you need to focus on your university studies more than you need a phone. They’re supposed to teach you how to handle such things and a phone would be just another distraction for your struggling brain to keep up with.”
Still, Kioko had decided to help. The alcohol hitting her system and colliding with her annoyance prompted one last hoop for Sebastian to jump through though. Kioko emboldened herself to make the request with another draw from the glass that was soon followed by a smirk. It was her turn to bat her eyes innocently at him.
