I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
It took all of Kioko’s already strained self-control to not snort at the name she was provided. Siren. Of course it was Siren. Villains as a whole did tend to be a rather on the nose lot. But still. Siren was almost as bad as it would have been if Kioko had chosen to call herself Quicksilver. What Villains lacked in cleverness, they usually made up for in deceit and destruction though. Kioko was a nexus for all three traits herself, but currently those brought to the forefront were anger and awareness.
“Should you ever try your Siren song on me again, it will become your own funeral dirge.”
Mercury that had been in her pocket where it had disabled her phone during the tech display began to creep up and underneath her top to where it’d be more readily available for use either as a weapon or a shield in the form of earplugs should she need them. Hostile though she was, Kioko wasn’t about to attack Siren amidst the still lingering crowd. Not first, at least. But neither would she remain unprepared as she turned her back on the woman to make her departure from the lackluster event. She had more pressing matters to attend to and should Siren’s own matters press upon her a need to contact Kioko in the future, she now had a name to attempt such a quest. But was she either foolish or brave enough to do so?

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
The request was a reasonable one by most standards. That Kioko’s initial internal response was, You can call me uninterested, was a personal non-Quirk quirk of hers. Yet the response she actually gave was limited to a single word.
“Meliora.”
Censoring her true thoughts in delicate situations, as most involving scoundrels dubbing themselves Villains tended to be, was not unusual. Kioko had verbally navigated through treacherous conversations before and she would do so again in the very near future. What was odd was the subtle accompanying shift of Kioko’s mental state.
She was not the type of person to have random highs in her mood that made her more agreeable or otherwise. Kioko stayed on an even keel of annoyance, well-hidden fear, and most importantly at the present moment, paranoia. The woman before her may have gotten the answer she wanted through use of unseen and subtle force in less more typical situations, but now Kioko was even more wary than she normally was and with wariness came even greater reluctance and resistance to being agreeable. Impressive because Kioko was rarely if ever those things in the first place. The biting iciness her tone took when she spoke next heralded a warning of her suspicion and impending hostility with the same efficiency of a rattlesnake’s telltale tune.
“And you are?”

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
There were few weaknesses in Kioko’s mental armor. Especially when it came to fending off Sebastian’s stupidity. In the end, she never did anything she didn’t secretly want to down deep when it came to him. Really, really, down deep. Buying him a phone though when he was perfectly capable of working? Absolutely not. Except he had pinpointed one of those aforementioned weaknesses with the precision of a sniper — Renjirou.
Kioko heard the threat in his use of yet. For Sebastian, yet could be days to weeks to months away, but it was most likely to be five minutes of constant refusal from Kioko away. He’d probably steal her phone to ask him too. Then she’d have to poison him to try (and fail) to teach him a lesson and then Shu would kick them out and ban them for at least a week if not longer. Considering it was the only place she felt any sense of normalcy anymore, such an outcome was exceedingly precarious for her sanity. What was left of it, anyway.
“Why would I worry about you?”
Though it wasn't the deciding factor, Kioko did actually worry, but she wasn't going to ever admit it or explain why she worried for him even under threat of death. So while she might have already made up her mind to do it for both Renjirou’s sake and Sebastian's to a fractionally more limited degree, that didn’t mean she was going to make it easy on the latter. Seeing him beg and plead was the only benefit she was getting from the impending arrangement. Did that make her a sadist? Yes. Among many other things.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
A singular and potentially devastating issue arose at the worst times when one could think as quickly as Kioko — her body and Quirk couldn’t simply couldn’t keep up with her mind. Though the intent had been to pull her mercury back enough to prevent evaporation, the opposite happened to thin sheets of the outer layers even as the bulk of what was left coalesced into her shield. What did not then became an invisible and odorless gas in turn that proliferated through the air. With its state of matter shifted away from its already strange duality, now it was unable to be detected by anyone other than herself unless they had the Quirk or tools necessary to do so. Otherwise, people usually remained clueless.
Until the sickness began.
Anyone that had to breathe in the ever widening vicinity of the vapor would be struck almost immediately by nausea, headaches, and exhaustion as their body succumbed to the toxin. Tonight that meant Ifrit. As mighty as he was, he bore no immunity to mercury. Neither did Sho. And what came up, must come back down. Eventually. For now only Ifrit began the battle against the invasion in his body.
He roared again in frustration at internal pain he didn’t expect. His fires flared even beneath the downpour which made approaching him even more dangerous. Kioko had no plans of doing so, but she didn’t have to. He was approaching her. Such was the life of one dubbed distraction.
The bridge shuddered with each shambling step he took toward her. His pace was slowed by his own bulk and illness. Not that he needed to be fast when he was strong. A long arm reached out to grab a guardrail. It warped beneath force and fire as it was ripped free of the bridge just before it was hurled at Kioko. The debris wasn’t thrown as a spear, but stretched out horizontally. Dodging either left or right wasn’t an option with as fast as the makeshift projectile moved. Which only left up or or down.
Most people would have chosen an upward trajectory for escape to ensure future maneuverability. Kioko would have too were it not for the shadow that loomed overhead with an oversized sword in hand. She opted to drop to the ground to avoid the rapidly incoming guardrail with her mercury shield folding down over her like a cocoon. It wouldn’t protect her from Ifrit should he attack again, but it would help her with what inevitably came next beyond the enemy immediately in front of her.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
The mystery person on the other end of the earpiece would hear a noise that could easily be mistaken for static. But Levi had met Kioko. Studied her, even. He was one of few people that might be able to decipher the strange sound as a gut response to the claim she needed a friend that came out as a cross between a hiss, a snort, and a scoff.
“I need no friends.”
Whether or not that was true was debatable, but given the intensity of chaos outside the isolated storefront she had sought shelter within and the presence of Gyrfalcon, she could use an ally. She didn’t know if this person was that. How could she? She had no details on them. Including why they wanted to help her as they had never answered the second part of the question. Still, dealing with one obstacle was easier than dealing with the horde outside while trying to single out her own quarry if things did go sideways. Judging by an explosion that reverberated through the mall, things were going sideways elsewhere as it were. Heading in the opposite direction was sounding better and better.
“But I will meet you there and you will finish answering my question.”
She wasn’t really in a position to make threats, implied through the icy tone of her voice or otherwise, but this was Kioko. It was part of who she was. Her mind was usually enough to finesse her way out of the trouble her mouth caused. Usually. But it was her body having to make the getaway now toward the employee exit at the back of the store that led deeper into the building and toward the emergency exits she had been directed toward with the earpiece in tow courtesy of her mercury. She still had no plans to put it in.

Kioko’s idle animation as she listened to the introduction lacked one key aspect — animation. Stillness a statue would envy only broke upon the revelation of Kei’s identity. Kioko turned away from him, seemingly satisfied with the answer to the point she felt no need to add anything else as she walked away. At least until she paused a few feet away from where she had once loomed over him to watch yet another group pass by with an obvious wide berth given to her immediate proximity.
She didn’t look back at him, but her melodic voice rose just loud enough to be discerned above the din and was clearly directed at him. “It has been a pleasure, Hada-san.” Her tone devoid of the emotion it claimed seemed to say otherwise, but few ever heard anything other than apathy or hostility in her voice. At least Kei was no longer on the verge of the latter. Nor the former either now as Kioko merged into the crowd with all the grace of a predator tracking new prey.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Initial quip was ignored in the flow of conversation that transitioned into a compliment both self-serving and otherwise before arriving at the point. Villains only seemed to drive a point home with any haste when it involved blades and backs. Kioko, for one, had enough monologuing for the evening, if not a lifetime though and was thankful the kindred serpent at her side had at least kept it short.
“Money talks more than either supposed sins of the flesh you mentioned,” Kioko replied. “Certain circles claim it is the root of all evil, so perhaps that is fitting.” She had been a victim of that reality herself. A vast fortune stolen from beneath her then weaponized against her in the blink of an eye. “Violence and seduction certainly have their uses, but when it comes to pure information, cash is queen. Perhaps start there. As for me…”
Kioko took a step away from the woman. “I am an arms dealer, not some sort of shadow broker in the business of bartering information.” She could have been. Kioko had a mind for it and a collection of intel to match, but what remained of her tattered morals prevented her from selling away her hard earned info because while cash was queen, knowledge was king and all the power that implied. Which was far more than any weapon she could place in the hands of these ne'er-do-wells.

Silence hung heavy in the air between them as Kioko icily regarded the man before her as his words meant to mollify the riled serpent faded away. Were it not for the ambient sounds of the convention still playing out in the background soundtrack, it would have felt more like they had dared to disturb a mausoleum of something longer departed. And they were in a manner of speaking. Kioko had long since laid to rest the kind of person she had once been that deserved the concern or consideration of others. Still, he had tried when no one else did. If he was lucky, that meant something far beneath the mask of apathy Kioko donned.
“There is one other thing.”
She verbalized no gratitude for the attempt at a peace offering, but her voice had lost a touch of venomous edge earlier displayed. Her eyes were no less sharp and her face no less stony though as she asked the question to appease a new curiosity in the wake of his inquiry. “What is your name?” They had gone the entire exchange without introduction because Kioko needed none wherever she went and she had cared little in the beginning to know just who he was. Whether or not it was a good thing she asked now would remain to be seen in the future.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Snake eyes. Literally and figuratively. That was what Sebastian rolled when it came to getting lucky. At least when it involved Kioko. He would have been on the receiving end of a less-than-fun tongue lashing regarding his jest too had he not immediately begun running his mouth once more. Alas, she would have to keep the venomous weapon sheathed for just a little longer as he blabbered his way right up to a daring act of thievery.
A gesture of two fingers in the direction of the server sent them scurrying away for a second glass and away from the wrath they saw flash in the young woman’s colorless eyes before they dulled back into their usual apathy manufactured for public appearances. Kioko pushed the remaining half of the drink back toward Sebastian with her other hand. She was tempted to poison him in the process, but she didn’t feel like babysitting him while he puked his guts up in Noyote’s bathrooms — even if said bathrooms were in better condition than her ratty apartment.
The thought added to the irony of Sebastian trying to con her into buying him a phone. She had kept up appearances well enough with what remained of her wardrobe, unyielding air of superiority, and the blood money she squeezed out of the Villain underground with her tech. Sometimes literally. But despite the facade of normalcy she had created, money was scarce.
She snorted. “No you don’t,” she said bluntly when he had finally stopped yapping. “You aren’t the helping type. That's Renjirou. You’re the mooching type. I’m pretty sure whatever phone you get would miraculously only work when you need to call someone and not the other way around.” Kioko shook her head. “If you really do want a phone so we can get a hold of you, then I absolutely don’t hate to break it to you — it’s time to make your parents proud and get your first ever big boy job so you can get your own phone.”

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
It was here that Kioko should have said something. Issued a correction that could ensure that the tides of battle didn’t turn against them given all they would face from Ifrit. If she had cared even a little for Sho’s well being or if she was even a fraction less proud, Kioko would have let him in on a secret about her Quirk and how it interacted with specific elements. Perhaps even if Sho had phrased his insistence that she could do no harm to him through friendly fire a little differently, she might have spared him from what would inevitably come.
But she didn’t.
Kioko held her tongue. At least on that matter. She addressed the other matter with a smirk and words unleashed from her sardonic silver tongue. “I am far too spiteful to die.” With that, Kioko took the high road where she could (which definitely wasn’t in how she spoke to him) as Sho had quite literally taken the low road. Mercury rose her up over the lip of the bridge then surged forward.
The metallic wave was far different than her normal approach. Her tenuous arrangement required that she be a distraction. So distracting she was. The metal grating against the asphalt like nails on a chalkboard, only infinitely worse in its harshness. Daiki immediately whipped around and as he did, he began to glow red. Truly a beacon calling the Gyrfalcon to action. She didn’t stop there though. Kioko knew what would follow from all of the intel that she had gathered. Her mercury separated into spiraling bullets that shot forward in an attempt to riddle the growing form before it could spawn into the hellfire that was Ifrit. If she could land even a little of the poison into his system… But it was too late. The transformation was nigh instantaneous.
He towered above the scene. His roar caused to vibrate perilously with its intensity and volume. Kioko had to cover her ears as she ran behind a wall of quicksilver she had called back at the last second. She could only hope that Gyrfalcon had fared better on his end. Between the hulking form of the behemoth between them and the steam rising from his body as rain pelted against the fiery mantel encasing him, it was difficult to get eyes on the man. The fact she had temporarily taken cover didn't help matters.

Sound hindered even as it aided. Cacophony from all around nearly masked the less-than-tactical rush behind her. Kioko caught the sound of said ambush only a second before her would-be attacker slumped to the ground. Diagnosis? Bullet.
Her eyes narrowed at the projectile embedded in the tile before trying to trace its trajectory back toward the origin point. Had it been a targeted shot or the result of another wild volley? It was hard to tell with gunfire symphonies still echoing throughout the mall, but the cadence had been different than that of ordinary small arms.
Sniper?
Kioko’s gaze had nearly reached its mark when her attention was summoned through her peripheral. Gyrfalcon. There was no mistaking the dark shadow. Ironic given the very nature of assassins and shadows was tied to anonymity. Reticence ushered in after a hiss greeted his sudden arrival and accompanying speech presuming to know her motives. He did. But that wasn’t the point. At the very least, he confirmed her suspicions of a sniper and their location.
She was tempted to follow him out of pure spite and would have too had a noise from below not redirected her focus once more. Instead, only a scowl followed Sho as she turned her attention fully to the other matter. Words meant solely for her rose from an earpiece made from an odd shimmering material in purple that evoked an even stranger sense of deja vu in her mind. Kioko just barely made out the faint voice coming through it beneath the din of the riot around her.
Not a chance.
Who in their right mind would touch mystery tech because it told you too, much less insert it into what was an almost universal weak point of the human body? Kioko snorted and spit in the direction of the earpiece. Spiteful and skeptical though she was, Kioko was also curious. Mercury had taken the place of saliva in the act and encompassed the small device. Carrier and ensnared package rose up to a higher level for ease of access even as Kioko ducked into a storefront and out of the line of sight of any more snipers and assassins that seemed to follow at her heels no matter where she went. Hidden away from the chaos outside, she posed a seemingly simple question to the digital voice with an answer more complicated than either of them really knew.
“Who are you and what do you want with me?”

A turn released Kioko’s latest victim from her Medusa’s hold once he had satisfied her curiosity. She intended to depart upon its completion. A thanks for his time was barred from passing the gates of the serpent’s lips by a counter-question — something she had been actively avoiding. She had a lifetime’s worth of having her motives called into question. At least this instance wasn’t a public spectacle. Not that such a pivotal difference fully stopped Kioko’s ire rearing up from the depths.
Her rotation reversed and she faced Kei once more. When she had last fixed him within the full gravity of her stare, she had at least been leaning. Now the menacing mercurial monolith had drawn herself up to her full height to glare down upon him.
“A problem?”
She gestured broadly at the convention around them. “What could possibly be the problem?” Clearly Kei had not realized the minefield of irony he had tripped into with his inquiry likely meant to be more helpful than accusatory. Were they in another setting in which her emotions weren’t frayed by simple proximity to her former life, perhaps Kioko wouldn’t have reacted so volatilely. But they were here and so was the elephant in the room that Kioko now dragged into full view as an unlikely scapegoat for her future crimes.
“Imagine me having a problem here of all places. It is not as if fearful eyes follow my every movement accompanied by judgemental whispers and conspiracies. Would that not just be absurd?”
Her head whipped around to pointedly look at passersby fitting the summary she had just given. One of the women in the gaggle audibly squeaked in fright at the sudden attention. Kioko sneered in response, baring her fangs as a result and sending the group scurrying away as quickly as they could while still retaining any sort of dignity in the situation. It may have been an act on her part to divert attention from her questions and actions, but the thinly veiled scorn that haunted her presence in public stung no less beneath the fire and ice of her facade as she returned her focus to Kei.

Kioko’s reticence was a staple of her personality. Sebastian just made her willingness to remain quiet seem like the opposite. Not that Kioko wanted to listen to him jabber so much in exchange for her silence. By the time he paused to squint at her, the only thing darker than the black she wore was her countenance. Fortunately for the server that popped by the table, they were used to the icy expressions Kioko wore. The colder the mask, the stronger the drink order normally was. Today was no different as Kioko chose straight vodka to deal with the inane chatter.
The server bowed out to fetch the liquor as soon as Sebastian resumed annoying Kioko. Nails of one hand painted just as dark as her clothing and sharpened to points tapped in a steady rhythm against the tabletop. The other hand cupped her chin as she leaned forward, body propped up on her elbow. Frost remained, though the dull glaze of boredom was starting to creep across serpentine eyes.
“Either get to the point or just shut up and eat.”

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Whispers of something wicked bore their way across the dark underside of Tokyo. Collaboration. True collaboration. Not just grandiose speeches full of hot wind and devoid of action as had been seen at the gathering weeks prior. Someone was mobilizing the Villain community to cohesive cooperation through the promise and application of chaos.
Application was the keyword. News of the ENKI System and the associated hardware it was hosted on spread ahead of the darker tidings it would bring. Especially to Kioko’s proverbial doorstep under her guise of Meliora. She had clawed her way to the top of the scrap heap that was the black market over the last year. When new tech surfaced, either she was the source or she wanted to know what the source was — and how to best deal with it. Whether that be to assimilate it into her own work or to find ways to negate it. Kioko walked a fine line between her own Villainy and ensuring Villains gained no true advantage over the few souls she still cared about on the other side of metaphorical and literal battlefields.
The ENKI System was squarely among the latter category from its sheer number of ill omened possibilities in the wrong hands. Of which there were many. Including the Umbra Syndicate. Her intel alluded to them participating in the coordinated mayhem and where they went, so too did Kioko. Were it not for their inclusion in what promised to be a dark day across Tokyo, Kioko would have given a wide berth to the city for the twenty-four hours ascribed to the looming peril and instructed Renjirou and Sebastian to do the same even if she knew they would not listen. As it were, she still sent the warning out to them, but she herself descended into the madness of the scene adorned as she oft was in shadowy garments and silvery superiority.
Brazen and barbaric. That was the sight that greeted the huntress as she stalked her quarry to a mall. How mundane a setting yet rife with potential for destruction and casualties. Already the count on the latter began to climb in the wake of spray-and-pray tactics. Panic ensued, but not for Kioko. Her face was stoic beneath the ornate mask obscuring all of her features aside from lips painted in the deepest obsidian and fangs bared between them as one of the minions missed a civilian with their aim and made the mistake of hitting Kioko instead.
The bullet skimmed past her arm, splitting dark fabric and pale skin alike. Silver trickled out of the wound. Some remained where it sealed the laceration. The rest returned the favor of injury as a bullet unto itself. It tore through the gunner’s dominant hand causing them to drop the weapon. Pain such as that would give most people pause, but the metal that had marred the mook was as insidious as its mistress. Poison coursed through them, weakening them and making them easy prey for Kioko to swoop down upon.
Long slender fingers clamped down over her temporary prey’s throat. She dragged them into an alcove reserved for patrons of the mall's many vending missions. “Where is the person in charge?” The question was hissed quite literally into their ear. Kioko’s grip loosened just enough for them to reply with vague directions.
To their credit, they mentioned nothing about the bombs or the plan at large before Kioko used the quicksilver coating her upper arm to boost her strength and ram their head into the metal casing of the closest beverage dispenser. They crumpled to the ground, claimed by concussion and toxin alike. Kioko stepped on their uninjured hand for good measure. Now it boasted an almost matching wound to its counterpart courtesy of the ever sharp points her stiletto heeled boots boasted. She moved on without a trace of remorse for her own actions in a stunning display of hypocrisy given her current goal. Kioko’s path took her toward said goal in the direction begrudgingly given up with her shadow stretching out before her as a silent herald of the reaper that followed.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Kioko had years of experience when it came to deciphering idiotic speech. Sebastianese in particular, as it had come to be called. Between that and her mind constantly unraveling the world around her for information, it didn’t take more than a second or two for Kioko to understand what the pseudo-drunkard was trying to say and exactly why he was having to do it in a roundabout manner — he couldn’t say Os. With those realizations came another though. If she was right, which she usually was, then that meant the strange man was taking the same line as she was and that meant there was a possibility he lived near her own apartment.
“Orange.”
The word came out as a statement rather than a question and was punctuated by another sigh. Her grip shifted from his collar to his arm in as much of a vise grip as she could manage given physical strength was just an illusion cast by her Amazonian figure. She pulled him toward the correct platform without even waiting for a confirmation.
“Pathetic,” she stated once more even though his condition was her fault. She could have painstakingly extracted the diminutive amount of mercury she had injected into his bloodstream, but he still deserved his suffering. And perhaps she did too. Having to babysit him had to count as karma for her crimes.
