I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
While the beating heart of Tokyo’s technology scene could be found in the industrial zone of Tokyo’s bay, its face was represented in a place far more suited for putting on displays — Shibuya. More specifically, within a stadium had been requisitioned and repurposed as an event venue for a tech expo by the various players in the game. Including Sovereign Technologies, the main host of both the event held quarterly known as Grand Design and of Kioko’s ire.
She stalked through the sea of people flowing through the avenues in between displays of gears and gadgets. As always, Kioko was dressed to kill with a cold expression that matched. Those that did have the misfortune to fall victim beneath the heavy weight of her metallic serpent’s stare parted from her path more easily than others. The latter were otherwise navigated by virtue of her equally imposing frame — whose visage further conjured fear.
Kushiki Kioko was a known murderer after all.
And the last person one might expect at a trade show run by her family’s company. Yet here she was, seemingly on the prowl for something specific. Eventually she found it sequestered far from any exits. How unfortunate for whatever poor soul was burdened with running the booth containing her quarry on behalf of the company that had created it.
The object that claimed her desire was a 3D printer. Not just any 3D printer though. It was a prototype that could theoretically make use of any solid material to make its creations and built to be smaller, faster, and more efficient. The amount of time it could cut down on producing commonly used parts without the need of entire facilities dedicated to manufacturing the various odds and ends Kioko regularly needed from the relative comfort of a small workspace made it worth any price tag.
Not that Kioko planned on paying.
Her eyes flitted from the prototype printer to peddler. “Tell me about your product.” A demand issued from forked tongue and backed by the fangs that framed it behind dark painted lips. Given her presence deterred that of any other potential investors in the project, there were precious little options to divert a much shorter young man’s attention away from the shadow-clad monolith.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Perhaps her awareness wasn’t what it once was. She was slumming it, after all. Two drinks in, a crowded chaotic bar, and an obstacle directly before her. Any of the reasons were good enough to justify why Kioko’s might not have seen the assailant with their chosen improvised weapon lunge for Levi after his initial denial of her claim. But she did see them. Her peripheral vision caught motion from behind Levi thanks to the natural six inches she had on him boosted by another three thanks to her heels. She simply opted to say nothing to him nor give away that she knew by keeping her serpentine gaze fully locked upon him.
She had been honest about her wishes.
The pool cue struck the journalist with Kioko’s intercession to stop it. She smirked in a way that bared her fangs. It diminished only slightly when he swiftly disposed of his attacker and then entirely when someone else charged toward her as the journalist made his second attempt at a dispute. Kioko hooked her foot on the leg of a bar stool, pulling it toward her before launching it at the person with a solid kick. It wasn’t an act of strength meant to knock back. She didn't possess the brute force needed for such a thing without the aid of her Quirk. Rather, the ploy was meant to trip and entangle. Which it did so. They collided with the chair, the legs of both entities twisting up together and sending them to the floor in between Kioko and Levi.
Kioko stepped on them as she closed the distance between her and Levi. Her weight combined with the pointed heels of her boots was an act of violence in and of itself. One which caused the stiletto to pierce into soft flesh. A cry of pain rose from the floor. Blood not her own dripped from her steps.
“Then clear a path to me out of here. I will not talk if I end up behind bars again because of you or anyone else. And I will do anything to ensure it doesn’t happen.”
The "anything" wasn’t said in a tone of voice that could be mistaken for a salacious offer. It was a threat. Plain and simple. The cold expression dominating her features confirmed as much. Levi would become collateral for her escape from police undoubtedly called over the barroom brawl if Kioko thought it necessary. As would anyone else in the room. Should they get away early enough, those that would remain would take the blame rather than the pair of Villains hiding in plain sight with their Quirks quite literally the ace up their respective sleeves.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Huntress of those deemed damned by the deposed though she was, there came a moment where balance of predator versus prey perched ever so precariously on nothing more than a proverbial knife point shifted. Primal instincts of one hunted rather than hunting overtook more conscious aspects of Kioko’s senses. The back of her neck prickled. Nostrils flared beneath the veil of metallic intricacies. Muscles tensed. Slitted eyes flitted to and fro. For all intents and purposes, she was a snake coiled to spring out and sink her fangs into whatever threat loomed over her — but there was none.
At least none that could be seen.
Absence of a visual target did nothing to quell paranoia and fear, but she could hide it well. The only obvious indicator of awareness and concern being her further reorienting to ensure that her back and at least one other side were covered by the barrier of walls. Her senses would have to be enough to cover what remained exposed and were that not enough, there was something equally as deadly to her forked tongue lying in wait behind dark painted lips.
Even those with neither senses nor sense could not ignore what came next though. The room erupted in sound even as light faltered in its wake. Kioko was quick to act. Most things in her life were as disposable to her as she had been to her family. In the darkness, silver flowed into her hand. She couldn’t assume she was fully unseen even in a total blackout and allow the mercury to flow freely into existence in shadow. Not in a world of Quirks and technology. The metal coated the additional cover of her palm before she reached for the phone on her person that had been turned into an agent for another. It was simply unacceptable.
Hydrargyrum transference between hand to device completed and in an instant crushed it beyond both repair and recognition within her pocket. Yet still Kioko could hear the faintest of sounds rising from within the miniature mercury maiden she had constructed. Her frustrations did not end there as the stage had been set for a reason and the reason revealed itself to be a speech that did not interest Kioko in the slightest aside from the call out ascribed to her through a moniker which was met through audible disapproval in the form of a hiss that in turn proved its accuracy.
The perceived offense against her combined with her own beliefs being a complete antithesis to the message delivered to the masses led to Kioko pivoting away from the makeshift stage as soon as illumination had been returned. She had no reason to remain. They would come to her for their weapons of war or they would not. It was as simple as that. Kioko neither needed or wanted friends from among society’s trash. The two she still had were baggage enough with the oaths she had to fulfill.
She would have left immediately. The push through mingling menaces eased by the fact she towered a great deal over most of them. While she was not strong, Kioko looked strong due to her stature and the aura radiating from the Quicksilver Queen was imposing enough on its own to part the soon-to-be-dead seas. They were all just nameless NPCs in someone else’s story to her. Or they would have been if Kioko had not caught sight of someone familiar. Or rather, something familiar.
A solitary individual off to the side bore an insignia on an otherwise nondescript black uniform that singled them out as a member of the Umbra Syndicate that had likely been sent as a representative on the behalf of Kioko’s uncle. Her own disguise and the low profile she had maintained upon being released from prison was sufficient enough to prevent them from recognizing her in turn. For now. Kioko stepped back into the shadows of the wall to watch and wait. Knowledge was power, after all. Especially in the hands of someone like Kioko. If she gained information about the others roaming around and making friends, then that was just a bonus.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Stabbing. Strangling. Stomping.
Each potential act of retaliation for the offense against her person was deemed too obvious an act to get away with in a full bar. As if things were not bad enough, the journalist had followed her from the booth. The obvious assumption was that he wanted a better angle with which to witness the further descent of the Kushiki heiress. It would be the perfect scoop to have exclusivity on. With the exception of her Quirk, everything about the incident with her brother had been highly publicized. People would be ravenous for a follow-up. Especially if it made her look worse. Which she was, but no one had yet to connect Kushiki Kioko to Meliora.
And if she had her way, no one ever would.
Kioko was about to tell the first blonde to get lost. As annoying as it was that someone had dared to touch her, a nosy reporter was infinitely worse. She didn’t get a chance though. He spoke first and… asked the other man for a light?
There was a flicker of confusion across Kioko’s face as well. Granted, hers went unseen as blackout claimed dominion over the space — and not because of her for once. She had reclaimed control over herself to be certain, but a different kind of CTRL had taken over. Entirely unbeknownst to her. Well. Not entirely.
Kioko was smart. She knew something was at play as soon as the lights went out. The sudden thud from close by and her wrist being released only confirmed that. Time wasn’t on her side when it came to figuring out just what had happened though. Chaos erupted around them in a tidal wave that threatened to pull them beneath the current as well.
She raised her right hand to her mouth as if surprised. She was, but that wasn’t the reason behind the motion. Her lips parted and liquid metal flowed past forked tongue and sharp fangs to coat the center of her palm. Just in case.
Better safe than sorry paid off immediately as a second hand laid claim on Kioko. This time it clamped down over her shoulder. She angled her head back to look at the much shorter assailant, staring him down with a singular serpentine eye that locked him in a Medusa’s hold as he realized the mistake he made. Distracted by the gaze, he was wholly unaware of the hidden metal shifting from Kioko’s palm to cover her elbow that she then drove into his face.
The sickness from both having his nose rupture into a shower of blood combined with the mercury poisoning was immediate. He fell backward, rolled over on his side, and threw up before clutching his face. Someone immediately stepped in the vomit. Kioko grimaced then side-stepped a glass hurled in her direction before she locked the original stranger into her irritated stare amid the unending madness around them to further distract him from the metal returning to her palm before it hid itself up her sleeve.
“This is your fault.”
She didn’t mean the lights. Or even the incident that started the fight. She had no way of knowing that. Yet. Kioko simply meant his very presence at her table had set the whole thing in motion. Which it had.
“I hope you get clocked.”
He was lucky she couldn’t afford to hit a member of the press herself.

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP

A finely sculpted brow rose in response to what Kioko assumed to be a quip. Then again, he didn’t seem to be the sharpest blade in the arsenal. Was he more stupid than malicious? Kioko leaned back into her side of the booth, arms folded over her chest. The body language signaled the disinterest setting in over how mundane her temporary toy was turning out to be.
He was obedient at least. Kioko watched him leave to acquire what she had requested. His absence was the best part of the encounter so far. Pity it wouldn’t last long as the bartender had more than one brain cell to rub together and knew what Kioko’s order had been. Lemon drops in a dive bar weren’t exactly the norm. Neither was the presence of someone as both elegant and intimidating as Kioko herself.
Air escaped past dark painted lips in a half-hiss and half-sigh upon his return. Awkwardness wasn’t confined to just his demeanor. It seemed to seep into his movements too given his clumsy fumble of the glass. What kind of person couldn’t handle carrying three drinks?
No thank you was issued on her behalf for the delivery. Kioko simply rolled her eyes once more, adjusted her feet away from the slowly expanding pool of liquor and glass, and reached for the lemon drop. Her hand halted just before her sharp black nails made contact with the drink.
He had said her name.
Her gaze which had drifted to her order immediately snapped back to the stranger and her hand retracted back to the safety of her own person. Dozens of different scenarios flashed through the mind behind the glare she gave him in response to her name dropping off his tongue so casually and without introduction. Of the aforementioned scenarios, only one seemed to resonate given her situation. It had been a year since her release after all. It only made sense that the vultures would swoop in to pick at the carcass that was the remains of her former life.
“I am not interested in talking to journalistic scavengers,” she hissed. Literally. Kioko extracted herself from the booth and unlike Levi, she managed to do so gracefully. She turned away from him only to nearly run into another blonde man that looked even more middle aged than the first. He had been lurking nearby ever since the "journalist" had returned to the table. It had apparently been some sort of signal to the touch starved masses that Kioko was any sort of approachable.
She wasn’t.
“Move.”
And so he did. He reached out to grab her by the arm to try and pull her closer to him and in doing so, he made contact with the bracelet around her wrist. The lights flickered for a moment as her wrath called out in resonance with the small amounts of mercury in the bulbs, but Kioko reigned herself in — between her record as a murderer and her secret identity as a Villain now, she couldn’t afford to bring the police crashing down upon her over something as trivial as lashing out at a lecherous drunkard. So what was she to do then?

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
Foolish.
A single word to encapsulate the idea of summoning Tokyo’s underworld to a centralized location. Whether it be from interpersonal conflict from the combination of strong personalities and the lack of both morals and often intelligence or the possibility of being corralled into one place for a raid from rivals or the so-called authorities outside the fractured collective of criminals, the potential consequences of meeting were daunting. Yet Kioko still answered the call to assemble.
It was not because they were her people. Far from it. They were, however, her clientele. The people whose blood money kept her from sleeping on the streets. Again. From heiress to homeless to homicidal in less than three years. Now she was one of the few that sat atop the black market tech industry in Tokyo. Fitting given the throne that had been usurped from her by her uncle.
All silver and shadow in her appearance, the Villain known as Meliora descended silently upon the designated meeting point. She swept past with long-legged strides and icy eyes meant to wither those caught in her metallic gaze behind the mercury forged mask adorning her face. Past those that seemed to be children playing pretend. Past the devilish doorman. Past all the trivialities. Monolithic stature and malice emanating from within the woman made their mark in keeping the lowest of miscreants away as the Silver Serpent took her place among, but aloof from, the crowd to wait for the guillotine of tension to snap and clear away the mystery of why their various presences had been requested.

Slender fingers drummed absentmindedly against the table in front of her. Kioko stared at her drink then the door and then her phone again. Sometimes she fidgeted with a silver bracelet on her left wrist, twisting it this way and that to either hide or reveal the metallic purple insert. The process repeated over and over until Kioko thought she might lose her mind in a concoction of nihilism, existential dread, and alcohol. The definition of insanity truly was doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Yet here Kioko was mid-gaze shift toward the do-
Someone new entered.
That wasn’t uncommon in a nightlife venue. What was out of place, however, was the fact that this man immediately locked his own gaze upon her. Stranger still was the brute force bee line he made toward her through the sea of booze-addled blue and white collar workers alike. Yet nothing topped what followed his abrupt self-seating service at Kioko’s table — an act met with both a slitted eye glare and a hiss that rolled off her forked tongue as she coiled in preparation to act.
But his words which somehow managed to slip free of the chokehold the obvious nervousness had on him headed off any further act of irritation at the proverbial pass. The sheer stupidity, fumbling, and out of left field nature of the words reminded Kioko of others she found more endearing than most. There was another pause, this time on her behalf before she snorted and rolled her eyes. Apparently he was just another hormone fueled twenty-something with an eye for quality that was quicker than his ability to form a coherent sentence.
Still, because he did remind Kioko of those couple of Nobodies in particular if they had been merged into one awkward fool instead of just one or the other, she would humor him. For now. “You’re an idiot.” She knocked back the rest of her second drink. “I’m taller than most men and those that are taller than me are irrelevant. So no. I don’t remember them.” Except she did. Her grandfather had a few inches on her and she would never forget him and what he had enabled to happen with his incompetence. Those memories were demons to deal with later though. For now she leaned forward across the table and gave the man more than just a once over with her piercing stare.
“Buy me another drink and you can stay until I get bored of you. Otherwise, go away. Now.”

I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
It wasn’t the usual place.
The usual place was warm and welcoming with its familiarity and bittersweet in its nostalgia. This dive bar was warm too, but with the body heat of sweaty strangers deeper into pints of beer than they were hours spent on consumption. Sharp odors of the unclean mingled with astringent notes of liquor spilled across a floor sticky with more than just the wayward booze. This place had seen its fair share of blood spilled. Not like the usual place.
Maybe that was why Kioko found herself frequenting such a shoddy establishment instead of finding comfort in the usual place. She was a Nobody to be sure, but without the other two, she was just a nobody — one undeserving of solace outside of those few nights they still managed to both find and lose themselves and each other in memories of who they once were and sometimes, who they wanted to really be. Kioko couldn’t bring herself to drag the filth of the underworld across the threshold for a moment of lonely reprieve. So she was here and not at the usual place.
Kioko had taken a seat in a secluded booth farthest from the door where she could see said entrance and keep her back to a wall. She nursed a lemon drop as she watched inebriated fools teeter around pool tables and stumble off to never-cleaned bathrooms in between games. They were kept at bay from ever approaching her with a stare so sharp and withering it could make even the most lustful blood run ice cold.
Every now and then in between glaring at regulars, she checked her newest burner phone. Only two people had the number so far. She had hoped one of them might text so she could abscond from the backdrop of her rock bottom in favor of the usual place. They did not. So she finished one drink and moved onto the next. Pausing only to bribe the jukebox to play something besides whatever country music trash had been dominating the speakers for far too long. The music shifted, but the vibe of the bar and its drunk populace did not.
Not yet.

Villain. That's the kind of aura Kioko exudes and for good reason. Ostensibly elitist and alarmingly apathetic are the best one can speak of her general persona with the other side of the coin host to a volatile temperament and a, thus far, endless wellspring of wrath once riled. The truth of the matter is that both the icy facade and fiery fury exist as a buffer between Kioko and further trauma from the outside world. Damaged goods, though she would never willingly admit it, Kioko's primary goal in life and the driving force for the majority of her actions is to not only enact vengeance upon her mother's killer and her own family, but to create a world where such a thing no longer happens. This has given the young woman a morality that is neither black nor white, but grey. In her mind, the end always justifies the means. The thin line in the sand which Kioko walks is not the only effect of old wounds. Trust issues, paranoia, and hypocrisy are all present along with a more positive trait of being fiercely protective and loyal to those that manage to get past her imposing guard and survive her scathing tongue. Being only twenty years old has done nothing to diminish the fact that Kioko is one of the most fashionable and refined people one could ever hope to encounter. A quintessential femme fatale who, in another lifetime, might have catwalked her way into the role of a model with long legs, feminine curves that make smart people stupid, and striking features. Of these, her silver serpentine eyes and hair tend to take center stage, their metallic sheen creating an iridescent effect. This causes them to take on echoes of the colors around her, casting them in hues of purple, blue, and nearly pure white in different lighting. Even her otherwise porcelain skin takes on a more subtle variation of this due to her Mercurial Quirk. Her choice in attire for work in the black market or engaging in otherwise less than legal activity, such as murdering her own family, leans towards simple all black garb meant to conceal as much of her body as possible while still highlighting her physique. She uses her Quirk to create an ornate mercury mask similar to those worn at masquerades to conceal her identity. Among other methods to remain incognito when on the job. [attr="class","body"] [attr="class","header2"]H I S T O R Y Tragedy. It is the common thread that ties together the histories of humankind. This is especially true for many of those that turned to Heroics and Villainy alike and while exceptional, Kioko is no exception. Being a prodigy born to wealth and power beyond that of most others did nothing to spare Kioko from the cruel realities of the world. Quite the opposite. Her upbringing in the family behind one of the most prominent international support gear and R&D companies in Sovereign Technologies resulted in the flawed coping mechanisms she employed to deal with the aftermath of her mother's murder and the subsequent abandonment by her father and the fratricide that followed shortly after during her final year of high school. Like Icarus, she fell from unfathomable heights. Expelled. Ostracized. Imprisoned. Revenge is often a dish best served cold and Kioko's revenge has had plenty of time to cool with time served for manslaughter as a minor in an act of self-defense and a year worth of freedom and violently learned answers after. Now her family tree has become her personal hit list. However, the sheer virtue of her existence has always drawn eyes to her and as the curtain draws on her story once more, two entities beyond the only other two that matter make their claim. One both a guardian angel and a devil in the making. The other yet another head of the hydra that represents oppression and power seeking to bring her to heel once more. [attr="class","body"] [attr="class","header2"]I T E M S Suspended Provisional License - The license Kioko earned after her PLE in high school before she was expelled. It has since been suspended and has no use or value, but she holds onto it as a keepsake and reminder of both her losses and failures. Burner Cellphones - Frequently rotated out cellphones to prevent from being tracked. Only a handful of people are regularly updated with her new numbers as she changes them. ☿ Necklace - A silver necklace forged by a someone important to Kioko. It has a charm shaped like the astrological symbol for mercury dangling from the dainty chain. It is always on her person unless she is doing work as a Villain. Memento Mori Bracelet - A silver bracelet inscribed with the words Memento Mori on the inside. A piece of purple metal smoothed into a perfectly round sphere is set in the center and polished to gleam like a precious gem. She always wears this. Kushiki Signet Ring - A silver ring bearing the Kushiki family crest. Kioko does not wear this, but she always has it on her person. She intends to brand the faces of the victims on her personal hit list with its insignia. [attr="class","body"] [attr="class","header2"]Q U I R K QUIRK NAME: Mercurial QUIRK RANK: B+ QUIRK TYPE: Mutation/Emitter QUIRK DESCRIPTION: Kioko was born with a vascular system that utilizes mercury instead of iron in her blood. She can amplify her internal resources, which are already heightened compared to normal blood supplies, then expel and telekinetically sense and control mercury. She can create a variety of constructs for both offense and defense with the heavy metal in conjunction with her telekinesis though Kioko often opts to use serpentine or birdlike forms. Given its nebulous state of matter, the quicksilver can be condensed until it is hard enough to damage people through bludgeoning and piercing damage. If someone has skin-to-skin contact with the mercury, ingests it, or inhales it, they will lose two ranks of Vitality for a considerable duration at this rank following the initial poisoning and up to however long they stay in contact with or subject to the source of poisoning as they battle headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue oft associated with mercury poisoning. Only length stacks, not debuff ranks. Since mercury makes up Kioko's own blood, she is immune to this effect. Aesthetic side effects of this mutation have caused her blood, sweat, hair, and eyes to appear as a metallic silver. The latter is also impacted by lingering genetic carry over from her grandmother's Quirk: Queen Cobra. This makes her eyes serpentine as well as giving her a forked tongue and snake fangs. QUIRK DRAWBACKS: Electricity is extra painful to Kioko herself. Fire and other sources of extreme heat can cause her mercury to evaporate over time though it will fill the air with a toxic gas. She cannot control the mercury when it is in this state. Though mercury is neither ferromagnetic nor electromagnetic to any significant degree, it can be affected by true metallokinesis which makes her body with its amplified mercury blood subject to similar, albeit lessened, effects. While Kioko can amplify how much mercury she has to work with prior to expelling it, overuse with still result in her feeling the effects of anemia. The compound is made using Kioko's own mercury supply and is housed in a casing of the same base material to keep it stable. They can only be triggered using Kioko's Quirk remotely (or a Quirk that allows someone to sense and manipulate mercury in some way), or by manually twisting a series of rings around the outside that are marked with various runes into the correct pattern then pressing them down into the device. Setting the wrong pattern will cause them to immediately explode. Setting the correct pattern means they will explode in exactly sixty seconds. The explosion radius is small at only 3 feet (1m) and has the concussive and fiery results one would expect of an explosive device that size. However, the real danger comes from the vaporization of the mercury casing. Since it is made from Kioko's Quirk, the resulting fumes have the same poisonous effect as her Quirk. At their current strength, anyone that inhales the air in the vicinity of the explosion(s) suffers a temporary one rank decrease of their Vitality, though the effect will persist after the initial period of debuff for as long as they continue to breath the air. Kioko can only safely carry six of these on her person at a time. Primarily when it came to her genius and position as heiress to a multi-billion dollar international tech company. She no longer has a claim on her fortune or family, but nothing can take away her mind. Smarter than the vast majority of those around her at any given moment, Kioko utilizes her intelligence to navigate Tokyo's black market as both a buyer and seller of goods — the latter of which she makes herself with whatever resources she can acquire. Legally or otherwise. SKILL NAME: Rasavātam [Fighting Style] SKILL RANK: D- SKILL DESCRIPTION: Taken from the ancient Indian science of alchemy, the name Rasavātam translates to "The Way of Mercury" - a fitting title for the mercurial nature of Kioko's personal fighting style. Ever the secretive individual, Kioko seeks to become adept at concealing her intentions in more ways than one and capitalizing on any all opportunities. All in all, it is a tactical ability meant to evade and counter with rapidly flowing movement, surprise and barrage with quick strikes, and embrace unique actions. SKILL NAME: Shroud [Stealth] SKILL RANK: D- SKILL DESCRIPTION: Elegance and reticence do more than sharpen the icy aloofness with which Kioko carries herself. These traits are also inherent in the way she moves when on the hunt or in a fight making her harder to detect for the unwary. Truly, silence and shadows are among the Silver Serpent's greatest potential tools .
