To stand out is to say something. Peacocks fan their feathers to attract mates. Poison dart frogs bare their skin as a warning — eat me and die. As a hero, he’s supposed to stand out. As a survivor, he knows better. In his day-to-day life, Rahul avoids needless spectacle.

He’s fashionable enough to fit in with his peers but what people most often notice is his demeanor. When he walks he embodies beauty and strength. Manicured nails and exfoliated skin are his weapons against a hostile world. Rahul stares down any challenge and dares it to blink.

The world is terrifying.

Danger lurks around every corner. It cannot be stopped, it is always coming, and all you can do is prepare for when it does. At a young age, he learned that if you are afraid, then you must act. It drove him into the hero institution — a legal means of acquiring strength and protecting his loved ones. He is loyal to the system because of what it does for him, but faithful to the people he loves because they are the people he loves.

Rahul chases strength and independence. If he is afraid then there is an opportunity to grow. A tactical retreat is better than inaction if you can’t solve the problem. Nothing is worse than doing nothing. Rahul overcompensates by taking unnecessary risks under a false mantra: “I can think my way out of this.”

He thrives under trust. Setting clear expectations and supporting him make him his compassionate, responsible self. If you overreact when he overreacts, change plans unexpectedly, or — worst of all — let him down, he’s prone to erraticism. Rahul becomes indecisive, bullish, and rigid in his thinking.

Unfortunately, he is suspicious of everything, especially people. People are prone to stealing your heart and running off with it. Sometimes worse.

BIRTH — A LUCKY COINCIDENCE

• Rahul is a Desi-Latine American.
• His mother was from the Caribbean but was born and raised in New York.
• His father was from South Asia and was adopted by a European couple who immigrated to America when he was three.
• They bonded over their shared upbringing and a feeling of disconnect from their ethnic background.
• They were both in the hero industry but his mother retired when she had a child.
• Rahul grew up in New York, with a mother who desperately tried to teach him what little she knew of her culture. His father dedicated his sparse free time to familial adventures.

PRETEEN — THE TRAUMA

• Balor, a former hero gone rogue, rampages on lower Manhattan.
• Rahul’s home is caught in the crossfire. His mother does what she can to hold off Balor, instructing Rahul to call his father. He freezes up and she dies for it.
• Rahul’s father is too late to save his wife but not his son. He tells Rahul to run as he tries to slow down Balor. Rahul still can’t move and his father also dies.
• Morgana arrives. She’s done the best so far, but it doesn’t matter. Rahul watches her die too.
• Balor’s rampage ends. He’s arrested as reinforcements arrive.
• Rahul’s taken in by his father’s best friend.

TEENAGE ANGST — TRAINING ARC

• An otherwise uneventful era.
• Rahul blames himself for his parent’s death and doesn’t think himself deserving of friends until he can protect those he cares about.
• Despite this, he develops a few romantic relationships that inevitably fall apart. No one knows what happened but his eyes glisten when he reminisces.
• Instead, he trains at his father’s old hero agency, courtesy of his guardian.

EARLY ADULTHOOD — FLY TO JAPAN

• When he reaches adulthood he turns down an internship at his father’s old agency. Everyone is confused considering his efforts, but he wants to attend university.
• His father’s best friend gave him a spiel about following in his father’s footsteps. He knows he feels guilty and the only way to feel better is by saving people. But Rahul can’t stomach the thought of letting another person die.
• After his first year, he decides to get a job. He strikes a deal at the agency. He’ll intern but he’s sticking to paperwork. They agree but they aren’t interested in hiding their ulterior motives.
• During his second year, he gets news of his Abuelo’s passing. He passed peacefully in sleep, leaving Rahul’s Abuela alone in Japan.
• With a newfound perspective, he transfers to a hero university part-time courtesy of his agency’s sponsor as he works a full-time job to subsidize Abuela’s lifestyle.
• After receiving his associate's, he officially became a sidekick for the agency through one of the university’s programs to get on-the-field experience.
• After two years he saved up enough money, and earned enough credits, to transfer to UAU and move to Japan.

Sunil Thapa is Rahul's late father and a former Hero who operated within New York. As an adult, he changed his surname (Ruther) to his birth name (Thapa). He could transform into a tall, white rabbit with quick feet and strong kicks.

Carmen Claudia Clemente De La Cruz is Rahul's late mother and a former gearmaker. She owned De La Blues, a shop where she created and maintained hero equipment. She only operated on the field when they needed a technical expert in non-combat situations. She could create blue diamond constructs.

» Gauntlet

Tanaki Yagi is Rahul's adoptive guardian and Sunil's best friend. He owns Heavy Hands Hero agency where Harecules worked until his untimely passing. His fist saps people's strength and makes it his own, temporarily making opponents lanky and thin. Taught Rahul how to fight.

» Abuela

Camila De La Cruz Calderón is Rahul's grandmother and Carmen's mother. She is quirkless and spent most of her life running the house and raising her children. Sold home-made crafts in her spare time as a source of extra income and a passion project. Keeps her late husband's final craft on her nightstand next to a photo of him.

Rahul uses his skin to transmute organic carbon into black rabbits with blue eyes. He knows where the Dust Bunnies are as an extension of his proprioception. Rahul can summon a bunny from his skin or another, pre-existing bunny but must be touching carbon. As an extension of himself, the bunnies act on conscious and subconscious desires.

They can communicate information to Rahul and between one another through eye contact. When destroyed, their memories return to Rahul where a second, black Thalamus processes the information.

DRAWBACKS

» A resource-dependent quirk is reliant on the resource and the medium. Deprive him of carbon and he cannot conjure Dust Bunnies. Damage his skin and interrupt the process.

» Overuse dries the skin, leading to redness, cracking, and bleeding. The worse his skin, the more his speed decreases. If pushed too far, Rahul can render himself immobile.

» A single hit turns a Dust Bunny into a puff of smoke. If you destroy too many bunnies it will overload his second Thalamus (awareness). You can aim for a war of attrition or create an opening by destroying them en masse.

By focusing on the combustion process, Rahul can detonate his rabbits into explosive flames instead of smoke. If he does not manually detonate them, then they will still dissipate into smoke. And he still has the option to cause a false detonation, allowing him to harmlessly detonate the rabbits when he no longer needs them.

DRAWBACKS

» Bunnies can no longer free roam. They will stay in place looking around, ignorant of the world around them. While he can still summon them from himself or another bunny, they can only be maintained within the immediate area. If he strays too far from an undetonated rabbit, then it harmlessly disappears in a cloud of black smoke. (Range decrease)

» The bunnies can no longer transfer memories, whether destroyed or through eye contact. The toll he spares his mind is paid for with his body. Without information flooding his second Thalamus, he spares his mind but at the cost of his body. Not only does his skin still dry, but he cooks his insides. (Speed & Vitality decrease)

By focusing on structural composition of the carbon, Rahul can create rabbits made entirely of blue diamond. They can come in a variety of poses and are primarily used for their defensive capabilities, although they can function as makeshift platforms and things of that nature.

A fighting style using a base of Muy Thai and Wrestling adapted for on-the-go hero work. With an emphasis on striking and using takedowns to throw opponents off-balance, Rahul avoids prolonged grappling and battles of attrition. Add a few rabbits (not a hare, but people can't tell the difference) and you can do the impawsible.

Having a fundamental understanding of hero gear is part of the job. Communicating with the experts and mitigating any mishaps when on patrol is necessary. Rahul focuses on practical, multi-faceted equipment.

When Rahul transferred to UA University, he applied for a provisional license. With his previous experience as a sidekick, Rahul continues his fourth year as a full-time student.
