The last year had been eye-opening for Iphi. Between Elementals, Dream World, and what they were calling 'MAWS' she had never been challenged as much as she was recently. Not only did Ouros still need to take on more staff, but even Sadako was running herself ragged she needed to innovate. This, combined with a chat with Hebiru, prompted her to draft up blueprints of something she had only ever thought was a fantasy - a robot clone.

It was the natural conclusion for someone with her skillset and quirk. She didn't have any innate offensive capabilities that weren't her creation. So she needed the ultimate creation: a Swiss army knife that could allow her to be in two places at once. A creation that could be the ultimate partner. She had called in all her favors from connections to get the proper equipment and a month of prep work resulting in only one piece of the puzzle left - a prodigy.

Kei Hada, even among other Support Students, was incredibly impressive, and his skill with engineering equipment was unparalleled. When she contacted him for the request she didn't leave out any details, expecting his curiosity to get the better of him. So she waited in the lab of Ouros with the exoskeleton laid out on the bench of the table.

It wasn't often that Kei worked on something outside the campus. UAU was teeming with resources, its supplies and tools available for him and the rest of the department to use as much as they pleased- within reason of course. There really wasn't any reason to leave the premises as his clients mainly consisted of fellow students. But then he got a surprising request from his superior to visit her in her agency, to aid her in a project so complex even he was unsure if it was possible.

It was a robot that mimicked Recall's actions. Better yet, a robot capable of acting on its own without much input from Recall herself. The human mind was incredibly complex; replicating it was hard enough as it was, let alone fitting that result into something that was supposed to reside in a body not much taller than he was.

She wanted him to try and help make it anyway though. And he had been getting better at building them. So yeah, consider his curiosity piqued.

But god, did her headquarters have to be in Tokyo Bay of all places?

He followed the directions to her other place of work without issue, eventually reaching the lab. Once he spotted the familiar redhead he waved a hand. "Pavlina-sensei, I'm here!"

With a friendly smile, she would greet Kei, "Welcome, Kei. I hope it wasn't too much trouble getting here. Ms. Gotoh has mentioned you've experienced some unfortunate incidents in this area." Sadako disclosed nothing more than the fact that Kei might be nervous about coming to their headquarters. Iphi believed he would have no problem speaking up if that became a problem, since they would spend time in the lab below the building.

Hitting a button to bring the exoskeleton forward, she would tap its exterior. "It's made of a tungsten-nitinol alloy. Maximum durability and flexibility." She would direct him to the computer she had set up nearby. "This project is a direct response to the events of this past year: The Elementals Incident and The Dream World incident." Both she and Kei were in close proximity and dealt with some unpleasant out-of-body experiences. "It got me thinking...well, more than usual." In an attempt at a joke to lighten the mood, "If I'm ever taken out of commission like that again, I'll need something to pick up the slack. As you know my quirk isn't exactly suited for combat."

She would move over to the computer and, after navigating through a few screens, would open a program detailing where exactly she was going with these thoughts. "I call it Project AI.ph.ii. I've spent the last few months compiling as much information on the subject as possible as I've been able to get the basics done for a fairly ambitious project - a fully functioning robot that mirrors my own image. An artificial dermis, a protective layer over its steel core, ensures that AI.ph.ii operates as a programmable, nearly autonomous support item." She would smile at him and step back to let him navigate any information he might find interesting or valuable. "I've requested the help of The Gorgon to create a brain map of my own and then uploaded it. I've been struggling with the technical aspect of engineering to put all of this together, but that's where you come in." She would take a seat on the desk next to him. "I've spoken to the principal already. This project, based on my calculations considering my quirk and your natural talent, will take about a full week of essentially nonstop work aside from the minimum amount of sleep required. If you're interested you'll receive a full credit of your choosing and will be entirely excused from class work during this week." She'd give him a light, reassuring pat on the shoulder. "Take as much time to decide on whether you're interested."

"Nah, this place was easy to find." Ah. She was aware. Which, fair, the flood in particular would've been impossible to hide. That's what he assumed she meant at least- he didn't know that she didn't know his involvement. Kei's smile grew strained. "You could say that. But it's okay! My being here now is unrelated to all the things that have happened here before." Because it was ridiculous to think he'd have a fourth incident in Tokyo Bay.

Right?

In any case, what he was here for was brought out in full display; an automaton already partially built. He nodded at her choice of material as he looked through the data on the screen. It was optimal for a body that was supposed to mimic human movement.

A small grimace was on his face when the crises were mentioned, but he nodded all the same. "I understand. Honestly, I'm thankful we were able to wake up next to medics." He'd heard stories of people getting taken while they were asleep. He couldn't imagine what it would've been like to be stuck in a nightmare, only to wake up in another one once you got out.

Kei took a breath. He understood the need to have something close by that could protect you when you couldn't protect yourself.

He listened through her explanation and scrolled through the information himself once he was allowed, smiling as he took in the thought process. "It's cool that you could give it a copy of your brain. Does that mean it'll have your Quirk in a way?" The question seemed unnecessary since computers were capable of processing near-infinite calculations anyway, meaning this robot was too, but he was curious. He'd often worked on integrating Quirks into gear but this would be the first time he's worked with a Quirk that was fully mental.

Kei stepped back from the screen as he received the pat on the shoulder, thinking. His biggest worry was trying to fit this project among all the other ones he had for his courses but that was assuaged with the full credit and exemption. A week of nonstop work also didn't bother him; he had his bouts of hyperfocus when something interested him enough, and the prospect of building a fully functional robot was definitely interesting.

In the end it was a no brainer. He turned to the instructor with a smile. "I'll do it! I have a question though." Hilariously, he was only bringing this up because she mentioned minimum sleep. "Did you take food into account with your calculations on how much time this would take?"

"I am truly glad you didn't run into any trouble." She knew that Kei had a bit of an unlucky streak, but he was always willing to try and support others. A true once-in-a-lifetime genius. She would ensure that Kei had ample space to look at the specs and data she had produced. She didn't want to force him into this project by any means, and it wasn't like she didn't have other resources that she could use to provide the same service; she wanted to foster the next generation by challenging them in ways they hadn't before, and this was surely a large undertaking. "It is indeed fortunate. Nurse Hebiru did a fantastic job supporting those who were incapacitated at the time." and Sadako did a great job of helping Iphi get her head screwed back on straight once she got back to the real world.

"In a way, yes. This project will have a link to both the internet, shielded of course to prevent remote hacking attempts, and a link to my own brain. Whatever I learn will be fed into the AI which in turn will use a set of algorithms to process the new information and move accordingly. This way, I should be able to give it remote instructions or call upon it whenever I need to." She'd tap her temple. "Strength in numbers. I considered the clone route, but ultimately, there's too much room for error or, rather, a deviation from its intended purposes." She was sure Kei would pick up on the implication of ethical concerns when creating something with sentience; free will was not something she wished to mess with.

"Wonderful! I will contact the school's administration about your decision." She would do just that by sending one of two emails she prepared when Kei accepted the proposal. "Of course. I hope you don't mind my cooking, but I have prepared more than enough meals for us. I've allotted about 15-20 Minutes for three meals daily, but you're more than welcome to snack while we work. Oh, and we have a shower as well." She took steps towards the nearby wall and hit a button that would slide the wall open to show a large refrigerator with a glass exterior, something Sadako had insisted she installed when she was holed up in the lab for hours.

"Now, for the first and most crucial steps, I plan to add in four major features: A photovoltaic conductor that routes to a battery for continual usage even in darkened areas, thrusters on the soles to permit flight at a moderate pace as I don't want to exhaust the energy supply, a gyroscopic stabilizer so the subject can work in hazardous conditions." She would pause to give Kei a chance to soak all that in; those were the simpler requests. The next, however, would prove to be tricky. "And the portion that will eat up the majority of the time, I'd like the AI to be able to integrate with any of my own support gear and use them for their intended purposes. If I can make a signature that the machine will recognize I'm sure it will work. I do not have the technical skill to implement such a thing; once we've done it, I can replicate it to the rest of the support equipment I make in the future."

Kei nodded in understanding - including the ability to give remote instruction was a good idea - though a hiss escaped him at her other option. "Yeah, that's fair. I had a colleague with a clone Quirk- they could act on their own and he would have debates with several of them! I can't imagine creatin' one and ultimately puttin' your own life over theirs." They were their own people after all, with their own thoughts and dreams and fears, even if they were pulled from a singular person. The thought of sacrificing them because someone else was born first made him sick in the stomach. Robots at least could be repaired. Fixing people was a much more difficult task.

He was pulled from his thoughts when Iphi demonstrated the fridge, eyes going wide at the reveal. "Oh my god you have a whole fridge here." It's something he should consider having in his own workspace as well, for those times he would've skipped meals otherwise when food was inconveniently far. "I didn't know you'd prepare meals for us, thank you! I'm sure they'll be good!" He may have been spoiled with Yaoyao's incredible cooking, but he's sure he could appreciate his teacher's just as well. But yeah, sounds good to me! I should let her know too actually.

So far her requests for the robot's capabilities made sense to him. If AI.ph.ii (such a smart name still) was meant to operate on its own, it should be able to traverse complex terrain and run as long as possible without frequent maintenance. Solar energy was logical when storage for that energy was also involved. Kei hummed at the last aspect, his instructor thinking correctly on its difficulty. "Huh, havin' the robot use your equipment... given the fact the AI should have your knowledge, that knowledge would include your experience with your gear. Add some machine learnin' in-" he paused to let out a chuckle, realizing the irony in his statement. "And it should figure out the optimal way of usin' your stuff."

"We could include data on the gear within the equipment itself that only the robot can decipher. Easier recognition that it's somethin' the AI should be capable of utilizin' and it won't be fooled by replicas, if for some reason it came across them."

Iphi nodded at Kei's agreement that sentience was a bad idea. Even outside of the ethical concerns, she felt the logistical side would make things much more complicated than it would be worth. "Well said. It was proposed as an alternative from the hero association when I brought my project to them." Kei, if he could remember from his classes, knew that it was possible to receive grants for gear through the hero association. As long as there was a proof of concept, you could pretty much get the money to do anything. Of course, it meant you would need a good reputation, and in the last decade, Iphi had helped in many projects for different organizations.

She smiled when Kei spotted the fridge. "Yes. It was a necessary addition. As you know, Ms. Gotoh also works out of Ouros, and it was her idea. When you get your own lab space after graduation, I highly recommend installing one and would be happy to share the blueprints for it." Not that Kei couldn't make one himself, of course. As he contributed his thoughts to the project, Iphi remained silent while she listened to his proposal. It surely lined up with what she had expected but it did provide some valuable insight. "Well, if that's the case, I'll grab my equipment that's out of the testing stages." Another button and the opposite wall opened up with several briefcases lining it numbered 1 to 145. Iphi would grab the cases for numbers 35 and number 72 which contained her Pneumatic Cannon and Inverse Curtain. "Feel free to take a look yourself and when you're ready we'll get started." Assuming Kei didn't have much more to say, they'd get to work.

"Yes, Junsuina has been interning here; she frequently talks about Yāojīng Suzui." Iphi would reach into the bento box and take another bite with her chopsticks. "I'm sure you will all maintain a close bond when you graduate." She looked over at the half created thrusters they had started with. "Please take your time eating, I'll finish up creating the casing for the thrusters now that we've gotten the framework done." They still had 5 minutes remaining with their allotted break but Iphi being the workaholic she always was tended to cut them short.

Fifteen-ish hours into project so far, and Kei was still wide awake with his brain firing on all cylinders. As much as he felt he was able to continue on fine, the food break was welcome way for them to relax and prevent burnout. The boy smiled into his meal. "This tastes good Pavlina-sensei!" He hadn't worried about how it would taste but he was glad he didn't have to lie.

Kei nodded, swallowing his next bite before responding. "I'm glad, she's really smart so she'd be a great investigator." And it would also do his friend good to have some stability in her life. But that was a thought he'd keep to himself. "Oh, and Yaoyao- Yāojīng-" eugh, he knew it was necessary to prevent confusion but saying it out loud still made him feel bad. "Prefers to be called Yaoyao actually." Better to correct her now when she hadn't interacted with his girlfriend personally yet. Though he was curious. "What about her does Jun talk about?"

As he grew close to finishing his food, he blinked when Iphi stood. "Oh, you sure? We still have-" Kei looked at his watch. "Five more minutes. It's not a lot but goin' against the schedule now would make it more difficult to follow it in the long run. Especially if we're tryin' to get this robot done in a week."

She figured Kei knew about Jun's little excursion with Kaida and the punishment they received, but Jun's decision to join Ouros as an intern was entirely her own. As Iphi worked on soldering the casing in two separate halves for ease of combining them later, she continued to talk, "Nothing I'm guessing you haven't heard already. Just the day-to-day and the trajectory of their courses together." She could relate to Jun's struggles in a way as she had her own best friend in Sadako who she went through UAU with. "No problem on my end. Please continue your break as planned." She pointed to her temple "I can monitor any adjustments to our timing by allocating more time for sleep or eating later in the week. Plus in the case where something slips through the cracks and we require more time to adjust part of the project this will give us the ability to keep on schedule."

Standing over the table she tapped her chin with her fingers. "I'm glad we were able to finish the thrusters, and the stabilizer seems to hold up to the stress test." They were making great progress with only a few more days to go. "The energy readings from the photovoltaic converter aren't producing the voltage needed to operate at more than 70% capacity. What do you think is the proper course of action? Its a little too late in the project to increase the size of the frame for more storage space." This being exactly where her High Spec failed to deliver. Theory was all and good but without the knowledge of how to implement these theories she wouldn't be able to create a suitable product. Exactly where Kei's Engineering skill came into play.

"Don't worry about me sensei, I can eat most anythin'! ...Except for celery. I'd probably remove the celery if any of the dishes have them." It was about the only truth he was willing to admit. He wasn't ready to say pineapple didn't belong on pizza or licorice was fake yet. She probably didn't have licorice on hand anyway.

Man though, Recall really did know what she was doing. Sometimes he wished he could organize his thoughts and time as efficiently as she could. If he remembered everything he wouldn't need nearly as many journals. So Kei nodded, trusting her judgement. "That makes sense! We gotta take into account unexpected challenges along the way for sure."

And this was one such challenge. Not enough energy was being produced to run the project at full power.

A hum escaped Kei as he paced close to the table, tapping at the blueprint sprawled out on the surface. "Well, we got a couple options." Picking up a pen and a translucent paper, he layered the sheet on top of the blueprint before sketching over it. "Expandin' the storage is a no go, but we could be more efficient with the space we do have. Lithium-ion batteries are the best for this but can become dangerous when damaged. Her exterior would help protect them while she's out and about though."

Kei slid the sheet with the battery idea aside before layering a new paper. "Another option would be to make her a hybrid. Solar could be her main source of energy, then she could top off by plugging herself into an outlet. The downside to this would be she'd eventually degrade back to 70% until she charges herself again. With two different sources of power though, she'll be able to pick which is more available if she's in a pinch."

Both sheets now lay next to the original design, and he turned to Recall. "Both have their pros and cons so pick whichever you prefer."

She tapped her temple with her pen, and as she parsed through the illustration that Kei had drafted, she weighed the pros and cons. Her mind moved extremely quickly, going through hundreds of scenarios, each in a few seconds, to determine which option had the highest probability of reliability. "I believe the plug option is the most feasible. I'm sure you're aware of low-power modes on your average cellphone or computer." She'd take the initiative to draw on the blueprint: "Assuming the power output for an hour of continued usage with our current specifications is about 6% power drain per 5 minutes of continued operation, that means even just using the boosters in the soles would put her in low power mode within an hour." She'd make a circle away from the diagram and scribble another design. "An external battery would suffice. If my calculations are correct that would let it run about 3x longer."

Iphi scratched her head as she looked at the nearly completed robot. They had managed to get everything in the proper working condition, and Iphi even memorized what Kei had done so that if she ever needed to repair her creation later, she could just recreate the steps of the process. Technical knowledge could be gained from observation, and that was especially true in her case. "So, we've tried four different ways to implement my own tech to the robot. Truth be told I'm not sure where to go from here. I would greatly appreciate your input and then we can finish up here."

Kei nodded, sighing. "Well, an hour is better than nothin'. Who knows- maybe we'll come across a way to extend it further." Critical discoveries usually happened when one least expected them, he found. While not the exactly most efficient, he was always thankful when they occurred. He smiled at the newly added design. "External battery it is! Just gotta find a good place for it so it doesn't become a target." They already had enough of those with the neural network and core placed where the brain and heart would be. It should be fine, they'll figure it out just like they had with everything else so far.

But here came another hurdle. Kei was lightly tapping his forehead against the table he sat in front of, running out of ideas on how to overcome it. "I don't get it. She's supposed to have your knowledge, so why is she still not usin' your stuff correctly?" Ana had always been the better roboticist than him. She knew the intricacies of AI, while he was usually the tool guy. He was surprised he got the offer to work on the project instead of her really.

No point lamenting over that six days in, he thought, as he continued his monotonous action of tapping his head on the table. Come on Kei, think. There had to be something. What would she do?

Not whatever he was doing currently that was for sure. Kei peeled his head off the surface to look at the robot. "Maybe she doesn't have enough sensory feedback on her hands? One of your devices requires that you flex your fingers in a certain way right? Maybe she's not able to time the motions right now."

Had she learned the technical knowledge back then, combined with the applications of her quirk, she likely could have finished this project in a fraction of the time it took them. Still, it was always nice to connect with students when she had the chance and Kei would be her future colleague sooner rather than later. She had another motive for bringing him here, but that was to get to know the person Yaoguai had chosen.

His mention of the lack of tactile feedback gave her an idea: "That is a fantastic point! I may have an alternative method to provide this feedback while keeping the lack of consciousness. Admittedly, my first thought was to copy over my entire sensory function, but if this creation felt pain, it would impede function." She stepped away from the work area and moved over to a computer; pulling up a few files, she gestured for Kei to take a look at. "I've worked with Nurse Hebiru - The Gorgon in the past. If you give me some time, I can likely isolate the part of my brain that takes on tactile feedback and flash copy it onto the hardware. From there, we'll need to do some testing to make sure it doesn't result in any unwanted stimuli." Once she did this, she handed the data over to Kei. "Still on schedule either way." She smiled, and they would get back to work.

With the project 99% completed, it was time for the final test. Activation and a light field test within the facility meant they had successfully reached their goal. Iphi handed the activation key over to Kei: "This would not have been possible without you, and I believe it's customary in some places in the world to have a 'ribbon cutting. 'It would be my honor for you to give the first order."

Oh god, here came the negative thoughts. For all the work they've put into the robot, it would be the worst if they could no longer continue it on their own. All that time, wasted, because he wasn't what Iphi needed him to be. They'll have to call someone else in. It would extend the time they've allotted to the project since the new person would need to learn its inner workings.

Then what if said inner workings were built incorrectly so they have to strip the whole project to parts and start from scratch all over again? His own involvement would be for nothing, he was gonna be removed from the assignment, his extra credits would be forfeit, he'd fail his course now that he had nothing to make up for his absence, he'd get kicked out of UAU right when he was in his last year-

Wait, what was a fantastic point? "It is?" What did he even talk about? Sensory feedback? Kei's focus returned to the hero. "Oh, that makes sense. While pain's important to us so we know if somethin' happened to our bodies, AI.ph.ii can continuously scan her own vitals." Must be nice, knowing if you're hurt without the agony that came with it. He sat up to look over the files, making a noise of agreement at her plan.

Which she executed and finished pretty much immediately. Kei's eyes widened at their schedule as the essential piece was held in his hands. "Still? How much time did you reserve for trial and error?" It was a necessity but he didn't think they'd have a lot of it when they had only a week. Okay. Calm down Kei. You could still do this after all.

He stared down at the hardware and took a deep breath. You could still do this.

Or Kei hoped they would be at least. It was a long week, and seeing the completed robot stand before them was very convincing. But they wouldn't know if they were truly finished until they saw her working.

The support student retrieved the key from Iphi with a smile. "And it was an honour to work with you. Thank you for involvin' me in this." He took a deep breath. "Now for the moment of truth..."

Watching Kei do the honors, Iphi couldn't help but marvel at the work. As much as others may not have believed her she didn't make this robot in her own image out of some vanity project; she weighed the pros and cons of the design being more generic, but the trust in the public was more important than perceived arrogance. If the automaton resembled her, it would be easier to understand that this was a tool used for the good of society, not a toy for criminals to use for terrorism.
