[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... If only Jun knew how to capture lightning in a bottle. Not because she went through an event that created a certain magic that she would never be able to replicate, but because when she faced off against that lightning guy again she would want to weaponize his own ability against him. She was caught up with all her schoolwork after the incident out at sea, but that wasn't good enough. She merely did the work and got the answers. She needed to understand what she had just done. That and try to get ahead of the curve for all her other schoolwork. It wasn't exactly the easiest thing to do, but she was surrounded by books at the table she was working at, writing feverishly with one hand and toying with one of her rings on the other. To say she was stressed was an understatement; she was also still in her jogging gear, having finished her earlier run and come straight here. She didn't have much of a choice, really, there was only so many hours in a day and if she wasted even a fraction of a second she was going to fall miles behind. Thea

[nospaces] [attr="class","skullhover"] [attr="class","skullimg"] [attr="class","skulltitle"]間違い [attr="class","skulloverlap"]How do we forgive ourselves for all the things we did not become? [attr="class","skullbody"] She'd been here before. Slowly she wandered between the shelves, her eyes looking but not seeing as her mind wandered through countless reinterpretations of space. She wasn't just here now, she was here last week, yesterday, two years ago, the day it was built, the time it flooded. All these memories crashed into each other, fading in and out of phase and blending into new forms. She ran a finger across one of the shelves, her hand shifting into countless shapes cobbled together from stolen memories. She examined the finger. It was covered in soot, and dust, and blood. Her continued gaze locked the hand in a superposition until dryness in her eyes forced her to blink. Like the shuttering of a thousand cameras, she felt the collective weight of every blink she had done under similar circumstances. When her eyes opened again, the hand was clean, and it was hers.[break][break]
It wasn't uncommon for Thea to wander in a haze. She'd grown fond of it. Accessing the myriad of stolen memories and letting them flow freely was often far more enjoyable than living in the present. The present was scary, and if she really needed to, she could just revisit anything she missed. Assuming of course, things in the present didn't demand her attention. Nothing here did.[break][break]
She continued to wander, picking books off shelves with no discernable rhyme or reason and barely stopping to look at their covers, if at all. More than anything, she was here to kill time. Idle away the hours until something interesting happened, not that anything cool ever happened in a library. She slid the last book from its resting place on the shelf before wandering over to the nearest table. Despite the library being almost empty, she saw people all around. It took her a moment to find a vacant seat. Or, more specifically, a seat used so infrequently that she could barely recall anyone ever sitting there.[break][break]
Books clattered onto the table as Thea released them from her grasp with all the grace of a cat in a washing machine. She then sat and began opening the books to what appeared to be random pages before earmarking the page and doing it again and again before dropping the book on the table and moving on to the next one. Her Glassy eyes appearing to not even be focused on the texts in question.[break]

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Jun nearly sprung from her seat up on hearing the clattering of books. In the opposite corner of her table someone new had sat down; armload of books, seemingly absentmindedly flipping through and making marks. No, earmarking. Ugh, that was gross. But it was odd that, of all the places to sit down this girl chose right here. She looked around, and sure enough there were a few other tables that were empty. So why that spot in particular? Glancing back at the girl, Jun pressed her lips together. She couldn't not say anything; sure she was a little rude for just flopping down and doing her own kind of work, and while Jun could respect her drive ("She's not even reading, what drive is there anyways?") someone had to break the ice, lest this would be awkward for the rest of the time she was in there. "Um, excuse me," she says, leaning forward a little. "Are you alright? You look a little zoned out there, and...well, uh...wh-what are you doing, anyways? You're just...marking." She wanted to call out the dogearing, but couldn't muster up the courage to do so. That would be accusatory, and she didn't want to start any sudden conflicts with this girl. Thea

[attr="class","skullbody"]The pages flipped and one by one the marked pages grew. She was maybe a third of the way done before something, or more specifically, someone interrupted her work. Thea hated people, she hated being drawn into the present more than anything, the source of that was always people. She looked up towards the source of the distraction, a voice that was familiar to her by virtue of her quirk but not one she'd ever spoken to in the flesh. She didn't want to speak to anyone in the flesh. It took a moment before she was able to discern not just where to look but when.[break][break]
“I'm fine,” Her eyes were glassed and hollow as she looked towards the redhead. “I'm not just marking; take a look.” She slid over one of the tomes without even so much at looking at it. She hoped that by demonstrating what she was working on maybe she'd be left alone, though she was just as likely to get in trouble for the same.[break][break]
The marked pages on each book, while random at first, all lead to pages with writing on the margin. Some fresh, some faded with age, some so old that there was only the barest hint as to their existence in the first place. There was no single author, but each one marked proof of someone's time here. Everything from immature circlings of the word butt to love notes scrawled on the margins of a poem. Each mark was a memory, something far more important in her mind than the knowledge bound in those pages.[break]
The marking continued. One page, then another. Another book down, a dozen more to go.

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... The look the girl gave her was creepy at best. It was almost a dead look, like she was in some sort of daze or something. Jun couldn't quite explain it, only that it was strange. Maybe the girl was using her quirk? But she couldn't know for sure. Not until the girl showed her what she was doing. The markings at first didn't make sense to her. It seemed random and without any form of rhyme or reason. That is, until Jun started to pick up a pattern. Every time a page was earmarked there was always some form of notation on the pages and margins, no matter what. Even then it didn't make a lot of sense to Jun; why would someone be interested in the margins of books? That was just plain weird. So as the girl continued her work Jun couldn't help but stare, tilting her head. "Um...okay. So...is there a particular note that you're looking for? Did someone mention some secret message hidden within one of the books and you're just marking the pages so you know where to look later? Is it...is it something quirk related...? Do you need any help?" She was unsure if she should even try to help the girl out, but maybe there was something important she was looking for. And it was likely that she wasn't going to find it easily. Thea

[nospaces] [attr="class","skullhover"] [attr="class","skullimg"] [attr="class","skulltitle"]間違い [attr="class","skulloverlap"]How do we forgive ourselves for all the things we did not become? [attr="class","skullbody"]The present demanded her attention more and more. With every word Jun spoke, Thea found herself forced further and further into the dreaded present. Not that her eyes betrayed this truth, they remained unchanged. They never changed.[break][break]
“Yes, it's quirk related.” It wasn't exactly a lie. Somehow saying the truth directly eluded her. “Nothing you can do to help. It's...” She struggled to find the words. How do you tell someone that this isn't for you but for people who will never know it happened, people who might not even be alive given the career path being here implies? It's not that Thea cared for the people in particular, far from it. What she cared about was their memories, the fact that they existed at all. Maybe in some small way, this was her trying to help other people see the world as she did. Not in the now, but from the lens of the past, a thousand different viewpoints, and timelines all occupying the same space. She folded another page. The scrawling in the margin read Billy loves Jamie. She knew Billy, he was a prick. Jamie left him after finding out he cheated on her. [break][break]
“I can't explain it in a way you'll understand.” Normally she didn't care if people understood her actions. She'd grown to embrace her place as the odd one out. She wandered the world as both oracle and outcast, though typically the latter took hold once people understood her quirk. There was something in the air though. Fragments of memory that shouldn't exist. This place, though utterly useless to her, was somehow special. If she believed in reincarnation, she'd say that maybe in a past life, she made a friend here. In any case, she felt the compulsion to do something different. [break][break]
The Mentat locked eyes with Jun, though Thea's eyes were truly looking at someone else entirely as the redhead's features warped and distorted into imagery no longer hers, pulled from memories that shouldn't exist. Thea reached her hand out towards her. “Take my hand and I can show you, though you might not like what we find.” It was a Faustian bargain, secrets for a mere trinket of understanding.[break]

Despite being a ray of sunshine hiding in the clouds because ew, people, her best friends were the personification of darkness, a literal frost dragon, and a creepy Russo-American which a penchant for mad scientistry. She was far from normal, so much so that she fit right in with the menagerie of strange that went to this school. When it was shown that the girl could best explain best with a simple gesture Jun's face paled a little. She hated touch. Specifically, people touching her. There was just something about it that set off her anxiety, and there weren't many people that could break through that. But in this moment her curiosity was greater than her fears, and so she hesitantly raised her hand, reaching out to take the tip of Thea's. "A-alright, if that's what it take...but only for a second! I don't do touch that well, and...and um. Well, I don't wanna freak out on you..." Thea |

She was a shark in new waters, and it wasn't long before she picked up on blood.[break][break]
Fragments of memory began to form a tale. Raw emotion acted as a beacon guiding the mentat as she drilled down on sights and sounds. A hospital bed, a body battered and bruised. Darkness. Fragments. Those were all Thea would find once Thea found the source. Each fragment would tell only a part of the story as she visited each one; the first few were simple. Burns rippling across her chest, a hand holding hers in the middle of the night, the stern glance of a maternal figure at the foot of her bed. Numbness. Further would be the same hospital room, shapes and figures bleeding in and out. Pain, uncertainty, fragments of her uniform torn from her body. Further back would be even more fragments. Rain falling against her skin. Voices shouting close, and yet far away. Darkness. Cold. And nothing but the void. And the trigger that sparked it all; a single still image. A deck, churning sea outside, cannons of light above her head. A bolt of lighting, launched horizontally at her. The cruel face that launched it at her. There was a drop of hope in a sea of uncertainty; all of it over as a brilliant flash took over, her will crumbling along with her body, plunging her into the depths of the abyss. Thea

Taking the memories was always an experience she had to navigate carefully. Powerful emotions tended to blur the lines between who she really was and all the imagined selves that existed in the edges of her mind. Even still, she was greedy and tightened her grasp on Jun to prolong the contact, if only for a moment.[break][break]
She struggled to fill the gaps. Whatever had happened was broken and fragmented. Memories in places they shouldn't be, the telltale signs of trauma. A singular face peered through the memory, the most precise detail she could pull from the wreckage of thought and emotion. [break][break]
The connection slipped. Before she knew it, the mentat found her hands empty. She peered at Jun who was clearly aware of what had just transpired. [break][break]
"So I take it now, you understand." She spoke plainly, without emotion as she processed what she'd just taken in, "Is that why you're here?" [break][break]

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Jun wasn't expecting a vice grip from her new associate, and almost immediately tried to pull back. Only then did she realize she fell into a trap, and she felt the presence of another in her mind. Right off the bat, she started on damage control; her high school days, her childhood trauma, the faces of her parents, Kaida, Ana, Yaoyao, everyone she held dear she threw behind walls. Unfortunately, her most recent endeavor was exposed for Thea to feast upon. The hospital, the sense of failure and weakness, all of that was all something she couldn't help, but she couldn't let Thea get to the source. Only this was a new battleground for her, and she didn't understand how it worked. The moment Thea reached the source the dredged images and sensations caused her heart to throb, and the emotions surrounding that fed into her already growing panic. Bolting up from her chair she pulled back with all her might, staggering back as her hand was freed. A wild look was in her eyes as she started hyperventilating, a hand pulled over her chest as she regarded Thea for the first time. "What...what are you?" Fear was evident on her face, causing her rings to glow. But there was another emotion: confusion. She understood that Thea somehow read her mind somehow...accessed her memories? Yeah, she was a little dangerous. Thea

The question bounced around in the mentat's mind, and a dozen voices answered along with a dozen more. Their answers piled on top of each other until the myriad voices reached a cacophony that even Thea couldn't make heads or tales of.[break][break]
"I am..."[break][break]
She had no answer. Despite the trove of stolen knowledge she held, this single question eluded her. A sense of self had no place in the Mentat's mind. All her life, she was an amalgamation of other people; somewhere along the line, she lost herself. Even when looking at her own memories, there was an intrinsic otherness to them; the more she looked, the more they bent and distorted, her internal view fragmenting and riddled with contradictions. If she could feel anything, she would panic. Fortunately, the Mentat's mind was grounded by task and the influx of new memory. [break][break]
"Thea," She answered. In truth, that wasn't even her name, but it was a greater truth to her than the one she had been given.[break][break]
"What happened to you?" She only cared so much as she wanted to fill the gaps in the memory. Instinct drove her to take the rest, but she knew that wouldn't end in her favor. Instead, Thea opted to try the old ways and ask directly despite the redhead's reaction. As she looked, she returned to her task of marking pages. Someone had to, or else they might all be forgotten.[break][break]

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Jun shook her head, stepping over to put her hand on the back of her chair, failing a few times before succeeding. "That wasn't right," she says, doing what she could to get her emotions under control. Really, she walked into that. She didn't fully understand Thea or why she did that, but now she had a better idea of what she was doing. At least, so Jun thought. "You're finding things that you know for sure people have touched, digging into...memory? Why are you digging into other people's memories?" The analytical side of her brain started to churn. If Thea could violate someone's mind like that, what would little tiny parts that she knew people had touched give her? Maybe she was looking for something, someone, a little piece of information that she needed to achieve some goal...but that didn't make a load of sense. Thea's question was met with a stern look. "It's none of your business," she says, her walls immediately going up. There was no way she could influence her without direct contact, right? And Jun hated contact, so all she had to do was keep her from touching her again. She tentatively sat down again, shifting her chair a little bit away as she started to move papers around, hands shaking. Thea

[attr="class","skullbody"]Thea watched as Jun struggled to piece it together. The frightened expression on the redhead's face was something she'd seen countless times before. It was almost always at this time that the violence started. Before, Thea would try and disarm the situation, but over the years, she'd learned it was better to feed into it and give the people exactly what they feared, a monster or a witch. The mentat didn't care either way. [break][break]
"At least you're pretty, Junsuina Kanjo" The mentat ran a hand over her shoulder towards her back. "What a strange place for piercings, and so many." She silently mouthed off the even numbers in sequence until reaching twelve. "But no, you're wrong. Nothing these people touched gives me anything. I just think the memory of their having been here more valuable than the books themselves." She returned to her task[break][break]
"You reacted quickly. Most people don't manage to hide things from me, or even notice I'm in there. I wonder what else is running around up there?" Another book was done. Thea slid it across the table at Jun. "You know, the notes in that book belong to a lad who died in the line of duty. Small town hero killed by a villain he had no business fighting. The news didn't even report it beyond his hometown. But you already know what losing is like, don't you, Junsuina Kanjo."[break][break]
Thea knew what she was doing was wrong, but she couldn't bring herself to care. The feeling of power was intoxicating, and if she could find an opening, Jun had so many more memories to take. [break][break]

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... A small blush crossed Jun's face at the compliment. At least, was that a compliment? She wasn't sure, she was too busy being creeped out with the mention of her piercings. She hadn't told many people, Auden and Yaoyao being the big two, and the fact she pieced that together off of their contact was...terrifying. And the fact Thea caught on that Jun was proactively preventing her from accessing other memories was just as terrifying...but it did tell her that Jun's efforts to put up walls had an effect. Would it work if Thea really forced her way in? Probably not, but she would take what solace she could. As Thea slide the book across, made the comment about losing, Jun couldn't help but reflect on the small story she told. Someone losing their life, and few people even knew about it. That was... "That's sad," she says, happy to latch onto some other topic to get her mind off of Thea violating her thoughts. "To die in the line of duty is possibly one of the greatest honors one could receive, but it's no solace to the empty bed or the absence of a presence in so many people's lives. Are...you looking for people that have suffered that terrible fate? So that they might live on in your memory...?" Thea
