There was nothing quite like skipping class every other week. She knew she needed to study more, train more, but she was just too tired of it all. When her body wasn't being pushed to its limit her brain was, how did the other students keep up with the relentless grind? It was infuriating to feel like a weakling, but not everyone was top hero material. Like herself for example. To stay on top of it all, she sometimes needed to take an off day like this one to smoke some cigarettes behind one of the many less frequented buildings on campus. Was she technically slacking off? Yeah, but she was also a first year, right? So maybe her teachers would go easier on her, not her fault she was born into a shitty hero family and had expectations to live up to that she couldn't meet.

Usually this part of campus was deserted at this hour, that was exactly why she had picked out the spot. However, much to her surprise, another person was approaching her spot. Not someone she knew, and not school faculty from the looks of it. ''Yo.'' She said simply, raising her other hand in a casual wave while she kept smoking her cigarette. ''I don't recognize you, but you don't look like you're here to lecture me about skipping class, or how smoking is bad for my gay little lungs.'' She exhaled smoke downwards. ''I'm Yoko Yanai. First year loser.''

She knew that Iphi would get on her case for skipping class, but she couldn't care right now. Her first few days hadn't been very good and she found herself having a lot more trouble than she thought she was going to have. People already had friends and cliques, and she was very much aware of the fact that she was out of place. Joining a new university in her third year wasn't a good look, and it put her at a disadvantage for making connections and having an easy time.

Getting behind one of the less used buildings, Calliope was just on her phone listening to music and not really paying attention to her surroundings. When she heard someone approach though, she jolted to attention and only briefly looked her in the eyes before nodding in her presence. "Hey." She didn't know anyone but some of the staff because of her sister, so she had no clue who this girl was. She was pretty and she seemed to be chill enough. "I'm here skipping, I was worried you were some admin bitch, but... I guess not." Calliope would move over a bit just encase she wanted to sit beside her out of the sun.

Did she say she had gay little lungs? The comment made her give a little chuckle, because most people weren't so open about their sexuality to a stranger. "I don't care what your gay ass gets up to." There was a shrug, but no sign of discontent with her presence. As she introduced herself, she hesitated to say her full name, but ended up doing just that. "Calliope Pavlina."

She blinked her eyes at Calliope as she pretty much confirmed she had the same suspicion about her that she did about Calliope. That she was some kind of faculty out here to wrangle delinquents. Still, to have that logic turned against her she couldn't help but be a bit surprised. ''I look that old already?'' She shrugged and took another puff of her cigarette. She sat down next to the other student, but kept a respectable distance too since she was smoking and all. Besides, she was talking to a total stranger here. Although... Something about her seemed familiar somehow.

She couldn't help but smirk at the fact that her own rudeness had gotten the girl to chuckle a bit. ''Then you and I are gonna get along just fine. You wouldn't believe how many of the health freaks at this school keep telling me smoking is bad for me.'' She rolled her eyes. ''No shit.'' Calliope seemed pretty chill and down to earth. Low energy was always something she appreciated and it felt like it was becoming a rarity at a competitive school like this one.

Wait, did she say her last name was Pavlina? Why did that sound so familiar?

''So, Calliope.'' She wasn't going to bother with the whole calling her by her last name song and dance, unless she really threw a fit over it. ''You don't look like the typical happy-go-lucky hero student and you're skipping class...'' She trailed off as she looked out at the fields of green before reaching into her hoodie pocket. ''Do you smoke?''

"No, more like some of these staff look too young to be in their jobs." Though, it was mostly because she was used to older people working in her education system back in Greece, not people in their 20s. As she sat down, Calli would give her another glance, not really checking her out but wanting to get a better look at her.

"Eh, there are much worse things for you. If it makes ya happy then anything can be good in moderation." She didn't really care either way. Putting away her music and her phone, she'd pull her knees to her chest and look in Yoko's direction. "I like to get blackout drunk, but that's not something anyone can really see, so I guess I don't have people telling me it's wrong. I know it is." That was the point sometimes.

"Calli is fine." She didn't care either way, but her full name always felt so official for some reason. She forgot that it was weird to call people by their first name here, but she didn't care. "I guess I'm not. You don't either. In reality I'm just vibing. My teacher wasn't interesting so why would I go to learn from them when I can just look at shit up online?" Looking over to her cigarette, she'd give a nod. "I have in the past, I'll take one if you're offering." Raising her hand to grab it, she'd continue. "Why're you skipping?"

It wasn't really something she had observed herself, but the more she thought about it after Calliope mentioned it, yeah. There really was a lack of elderly people around campus. ''I guess the hero industry isn't the place to work if you want to live a long life.'' She silently appreciated that Calli had such a laissez-faire attitude towards life, but it did make her wonder, how did this girl become a hero student in the first place? Accepting smoking was one thing, but admitting so casually to getting blackout drunk, presumably alone or with friends outside of school since she mentioned she wouldn't get told off for it...

No, she was probably just overthinking it.

''You won't hear it from me either.'' She took out her pack of cigarettes and looked at it for a moment before she got one out and handed it to Calli. ''Damn right. All the teachers talk too much anyway.'' When Calli took the cigarette she followed up with her lighter, lighting it for her. ''I'm skipping because I'm tired of this shit school and need an off day.'' She sighed, putting a hand up to her own head. ''When it isn't classes and homework until your brain explodes, it's training and improving your body and quirk until you feel like you're gonna pass out in the middle of the day.'' She looked down at her cigarette for a moment as she shook some ashes off into her portable ashtray, placing it between them for whenever Calli needed to put her cigarette out. ''It's an endless grind, and everyone just bears it with a smile.'' Something which she obviously didn't do herself as she always looked perpetually grumpy, angry or sleepy.

''Anyway, you liked drinking?'' She looked over at Calli, still trying to figure her out. Was she one of those popular students who had a bad streak, or one of the losers like herself? ''Do you go out into Tokyo?'' She couldn't quite place it, but there was something about Calli's eyes that threw her off. It wasn't the color, and she didn't feel like Calli was looking at her in a condescending or antagonizing way... Was it the shape? They kind of looked like... Spirals.

Before she knew it her head was starting to spin. Had she been standing she would most likely have lost her balance by now. She looked back away from Calli's eyes and down at her cigarette again, wondering if smoking had somehow made her sick. ''Okay, there's no way to ask this that isn't weird but, your eyes, they're pretty unique?'' Great. Words were failing her once again. Classic Yoko being terrible with people.

"I guess not, but that's also stupid. You'd think you'd want us living a long time because some of us get shit done, ya know?" Her dialect could sound informal and messy at times. "But we are replaceable, that's why we do it, right? We all try to do things to become relevant but it's hard to do that."

Taking a cigarette, Calliope stared at it and smiled softly to her. "Thanks. And yeah, I think half of them don't really want to be here, if you ask me." It felt too obvious that some of them were teachers because they weren't good enough pro heroes. For her reason, Calliope could understand that. "I can understand it. I won't say I saw you, so don't worry." She'd light the cigarette with Yoko's light and take a big puff. It wasn't her first time, so she didn't cough or make a big deal about it.

"It's always something. Then you gotta think about making friends and getting a partner and getting a job." Calliope already felt that pressure and she'd only been here for a little bit. "Then ya got the expectations of your family too, and friends." It was a cycle that was hard to be able to get out of. It seemed that it didn't go away no matter what you did and the responsibilities and expectations only got worse and worse.

"I do yeah. I haven't been into Tokyo too much. I haven't been in Japan for too long so I'm kind of just trying to take little steps and figure out what is best for me." Calli had a lot of exploration to do and it wasn't always clear what was going to work and what wasn't. Looking into Yoko's eyes, she tried not to stare too hard, but she knew that her quirk had probably went off a little bit.

"Yeah, sorry if I looked at you. Makes people dizzy and shit. It's my quirk." She would look down to her cigarette. "I try to avoid people's gaze so that it doesn't fuck with them. Sometimes it's hard to do that though, because it makes me look like I don't care."

''Sure seems that way. Part of growing older is realizing that life sucks and none of us are anything special. Some are just born richer, or more lucky than others.'' She took a puff of her own cigarette and looked ahead of them for a moment. Seemed like her and Calliope agreed on a lot of these bullshit things that life threw at them. ''Cool. I won't say a word either.''

She let out a sigh. ''Tell me about it! Doubly so if you're the younger sibling and your sister is extremely successful and smart. Suddenly, the whole family looks at you like they're expecting something great to happen next, but all I can think is... Fuck off. I'm my own messed up person with my own messed up problems. I don't need your peer pressure bullshit. You don't think I'm aware of how shitty I am?'' She huffed, clearly not even trying to hide the fact that she was speaking from personal experience.

''I see, that explains the accent. I don't mind it, by the way, I was just wondering why you sounded different than the average Tokyo kid.'' She held a hand up to her own head as she felt it spinning a little bit. ''Is that so?'' She looked away. ''Don't mention it and don't be sorry. You didn't choose the hand that was dealt you.'' That sounded so unfair. Who were these people that thought she didn't care just because she didn't look at them? ''I don't think so. You care plenty, right? Did anyone tell you that? Do you need me to silence them for you?'' She was a delinquent through and through, and she wasn't above beating up bullies for the people who were nice to her.

"Yep, that's just how life is." It just was how things were, so Calliope wasn't happy or sad about that reality. She would take a puff of her cigarette along with Yoko, mostly so that she didn't interrupt the talking between them.

She'd perk up at the sentiment being shared about siblings. "Literally! Like, bro, I'm my own person. What if I don't want to be successful and I just want to be a person, like a regular person!" Calliope could only hope that it was going to go down at some point, but at the very least she didn't have to hear it in person anymore. "I just want to figure things out without the idea that I have to be like my sister. My sister isn't perfect, but they think she's some Virgin Mary reincarnated and that she can do no wrong now that's popular and successful. Fuck, I'm still young, I don't want someone else's shadow." It pissed her off, but knowing that Yoko understood it made things feel better. "I assume you feel the same huh? Your sister the person people think you need to be?"

"I do care, but some people really care about eye contact. Thing is, the second I do, they want to stop talking to me. It's a lose lose scenario. I'm fucked when someone confesses to me, because I'm gonna make 'em sick to my stomach." She would close her eyes and put her head in between her legs. "It's just hard to make friends that way. But I guess it isn't that bad, I could have it worse." Looking over to Yoko but not into her eyes, she'd smile. "Thanks for being cool about it."
