He has seen what panic and fear does to people, and how it can make bad situations go to the absolute worse, and so does what he can to nip those feelings in the bud, as quickly as possible.
He is the first into the fire and the last to jump out, a fearless and selfless individual to his core. Consistently putting himself in harm's way for others, Kano believes this is one of the basest responsibilities of a hero. He is willing to, and has, stepped in the line of fire for another's safety. The two would meet during a international hero summit in Japan in which Normandy attended, and soon after fall in love. She would decide to resettle in Japan, entering its heroics community and garnering much respect and friends within it over the course of her thirty-year career, while his father would rise through the ranks of the metropolitan fire department to become a captain.
Growing up, Kano had a fierce competitive spirit, striving to be the best at and win in whatever contest or event he'd participate in. Whether it be games on the playground, sports, and even academics early on, he always wanted to be number one, to garner the accolades that'd come with such spotlight. He'd dominate in sports, becoming a star on the local teams and in his school's athletic clubs. Academics would prove much more of a challenge for him to shine in, no matter how much he studied, only averaging out at a B- at best.
Though born in Tokyo, his parents would settle in Kyoto for most of Kano's early childhood. Due to both his parent's careers in the hectic domain of public service, there were times when he did not see much of them due to an emergency or disaster that was happening. But they both would fight tooth and nail to ensure they could spend proper time as a family together, even if it was only just twice a week. A majority of his time however was spent with his paternal grandparents, who lived several blocks away in the suburbs of city. His early years within high school were rough, shaped by his bold and stubborn personality. Still of the mind of being the best, he often times rubbed his peers the wrong way, and sometimes got into fights with them. These brawls however would give way to understanding, and eventually friendship. In his later years, Kano would focus on achieving high marks and recognition in order to apply to the multitude of heroic programs hosted by colleges around Japan, the most famous of which being U.A.
Passing the entrance exam as well as interviews, he'd gain acceptance into the prestigious school. It would also be during this time he would meet the hero Daimao, a severe and dark figure viewed with disdain within the Japanese and American heroics communities. Despite this, Kano found himself accepting an offer of internship with the hero's agency, Monarch. Daimao would teach him of what it'd mean to be a hero, of what it would take to truly fulfil their duties in society. This period would be marred by separate incidents and personal tragedies that would shape the young hero be: the retirement of his mother after her maiming in a fight against a villain. The loss of his grandfather during a villain's rampage in Kyoto. His own close call during a disaster in which he was forced to act in order to save others. Each of these were a catalyst of change for the better in young Kano, honing his skills, Quirk, and mentality for the real world.
When graduation day came, he wanted to show the everyone he was ready for whatever the world threw at him, and so chose a name to reflect this: Dauntless. And the world was more than ready for him. Thrown straight from the pan into the fire, Kano was in the deep end of things during his initial foray into heroics. Hostage crisis, disaster relief, and villain suppression became his week-to-week, day-to-day schedule as apart of Monarch. Growing under the leadership of Daimao, Kano would venture into his own cases, frequently clashing with elements of the criminal underworld, such as yakuza syndicates and black-market dealers.
His cases would eventually take him abroad, on the trail of a villain known as Red Claw. Landing in America, Kano would find help from the local heroes and interns of the Bass Institute, one of the country's own heroic school programs. With their help, he'd be able to capture Red Claw, though not without cost. Injured heavily, and requiring time to recuperate, he returned to Japan.
