Sebastian Faust is a man of contradictions—a being of inconsistency. A lot of the things that he wants out of life run counter-productive to each other. For example, he wants to be acknowledged by others, but he also wants to fade into obscurity—never to be bothered by anyone in the world. Another contradiction is that he wants to be ignorant of everything, but has a natural compulsion to seek knowledge and the truth. He wants to achieve greatness, but he doesn't want to put in any amount of effort into achieving it. Contradictions like these drive Sebastian as he acts according to whatever side of the coin he landed on on that particular day at that particular time.
On an alignment chart, Sebastian would fall squarely within Chaotic Good. He acts according to his own conscience and moral compass directs him often independent of traditional laws and morals. The conventional hero may uphold honesty, justice, and honor, but Sebastian sees these concepts as limitations. Lying, cheating, bending, and breaking rules? These are perfectly acceptable actions so long as it is in pursuit of the greater good. To him, the ends justify the means—within reason.
While he may have a reputation for being an insensitive jokester who seems incapable of being serious or displaying a modicum of empathy, he has his moments of humanity. There are times when he drops the mask to share his wisdom with others. There are times when he can even show genuine care for another. Unfortunately, these moments come sporadically, as he struggles to be a consistently good person. He's the type of person you can't really rely on often but someone you can rely on when all the cards are on the table.
Is Sebastian a good person? It depends on your point of view. Others may think that beneath all of his flaws, he is a good person. Meanwhile, some may consider him to be an irredeemable jackass.

Because of that, he never learned how to put in the work. When his parents moved from London to Japan just before high school, however, he got hit with a reality check. He couldn't just coast by on his natural talent anymore. He had to actually put in the effort if he didn't want to fall behind his peers. When faced with that reality, he crumbled. By the time he hit his third year, he called it quits. He dropped out of high school and became a bit of a hikikomori.
He spent the next five years sheltered in his room, playing video games and distracting himself with all sorts of mundane bullshit. Rather than rise to the challenge, he chose to squander all of his gifts until his parents got fed up with him wasting his life away. They ended up exercising a bit of tough love and kicked his ass out onto the streets, hoping that it'd force him to start seriously considering what he wants out of his life.
It worked.
He went out and got his GED and put in the work. And while he most certainly didn't belong there, he managed to luck his way right into U.A.—the most prestigious hero school in all of Japan. Of course, his plan was never to actually attend it. Rather, once he got that acceptance letter, he marched right back home, intent to return to his life as a hikikomori only for his parents to quickly crush that dream right before his very eyes. And so there he found himself locked into his new life as a college student.
