Entrance Exam: Cold Front |
"If you feel yourself hitting up against your limit, remember for what cause you clench your fists" |
UAU's Entrance Exams. Hundreds had applied to Japan's greatest Hero University, but only a few dozen were offered the exam, and far fewer were expected to pass. Yama sat in the back of the waiting area, watching the other students find their courage or break under pressure. He was ready. Had been training for years now. His plague was impatience. Just how long did the esteemed university plan to hold them here before cluing them in on the particulars of the coming exam. Or had the test already begun? Was the wait simply one more measure with which to separate the wheat from the chaff?
Finally, the large screen at the head of the room flickered on. It framed one of UAU's more famous heroes, SuperNova, rumored to be one of the greatest pyrokinetic types in the nation - now delivering a practiced speech, though it was one he truly believed in.
"Greetings, hero-aspirants! I hope you're all ready, for the exam is about to begin," he would finish with a brief pause. "I won't hold you up with many words of wisdom and inspiration today. You know why you're here. It's up to you to prove you have what it takes, not only to us, but yourselves, to be a hero. Now, let's get to it. Beyond the gates, you'll find Grounds Beta, a mock city of substantial size. For the purposes of this exam, the city has been hit by a cold front of villainous nature. You are the first responders, and as such, have been tasked with rescue operations and villain containment," SuperNova would pause again, allowing the applicants to digest the first details.
"As I said, behind this storm is a villain, Glacier, and his partner, Prophet, who have initiated an all-out attack on the city. You'll find enemies of robotic nature and otherwise playing the part of our main two villains' underlings, all looking to cause damage and bring harm to the people. Speaking of which, you will also find a number of robotic dummies and actors in need of rescue. Defeating villains, both high and low, and rescuing civilians will earn you a varying number of points by which you shall be judged. Rescued civilians must be returned to the marked area just beyond the gates which shall act as a safe zone," SuperNova would give the students another moment. Through various cameras and sensors, he could see each and every one of them in the room. Some appeared ready to vomit. Others were hopping in place, prepared to dart straight into the thick of it.
"At any point, you may return here to conclude your participation in the exam, but remember that your fellow UAU applicants may be out there accumulating more points by performing heroic actions, and there are only so many points to go around. There are no requirements to see the exam completed other than to do your best, but those that score below a certain undisclosed threshold shall fail. Remember why you're here. Whatever it is that drove you to UAU's gates, clutch it close. Draw strength from it. Give it your best, and go beyond Plus Ultra!"
Without another word the gates would open, marking the beginning of the exam. Half the students, Yama included, immediately poured out of the waiting area and into the frigid cold of the mist beyond. Dusting snow had covered the interior of the city, while the outer edges were accosted by frigid winds. Power lines were blown over into some of the mock buildings, within which there were dummy androids calling out for help. Various villain robots patrolled the streets looking to stir up some trouble, and deeper within the storm there were Glacier's ice clones lining the rooftops of some of the buildings.
The exam had begun.
OOC
"Everything is theoretically impossible until it's done." Hey all! So a quick summary of the details behind this exam. There are two "big villains" in the city, but you are not required to defeat them to pass the exam (they are designed to be pretty difficult, especially if tackling either one alone). Likewise, there are robotic villains, like in the source material's exam, that are causing trouble as well as some of Glacier's ice clones. If you approach Prophet, you will also find that some of the actors and robot dummies playing civilians may also be hostile, simulating Prophet's quirk. That said, there are far more dummies and actors throughout Grounds Beta that are just acting as civilians in need.
You do not need to interact with the applicant NPC, Yama, unless you wish to. He's really only here for me to interact with you on the application side if needed. That may come in the form of help or hindrance. There are also other student NPCs that you may use to some degree (just don't go having them do illogical things like throw the exam just to help your character or anything else that ridiculous).
As for the environment, there is a thick, frigid fog wafting around the mock city and bringing with it some heavy winds. Snow is beginning to dust the inner parts of the city. As stated above, rescued civilians need to be returned to a designated "safe zone" just outside the gates that lead into the grounds from the waiting area. If you have any other questions, feel free to DM me or drop a message in our group chat. The exam should feel difficult ICly, but I'm always willing to change things up to accommodate your cool scenes and character moments as long as it's nothing outlandish (no displaying All Might levels of strength in an entrance exam xD). Most importantly, have fun!

AFFILIATION: "Villain"
QUIRK RANK: S- (mostly utilizing it for the cold front, will go up to A+ in combat)
QUIRK OVERVIEW: "Cryomancy" is a cold quirk that allows the user to summon ice and a thick, chilled fog. He can use this to fire projectiles or create weapons and armor. Additionally, he can create ice clones of himself. As an ultimate move, he can become an ice golem where his strength, endurance, and icy "firepower" are increased. |
CHARACTER OVERVIEW:Though he'd rather be out in the field, Glacier has volunteered to play one of the villains at UAU's request for this exam. Too lazy to come up with an alternate name, Glacier is just using his hero alias as a villain name. His preferred method of attack is to beset his enemies in his frigid fog, which he can sense them through, to slow them down and dampen their senses, then strike hard and fast with his ice clones. AWARENESS: B (S- within the cold front) CONSTITUTION: B (A+ as Golem) DEXTERITY: B (C as Golem) PRESENCE: B- SPEED: B (C as Golem) STRENGTH: B (A+ as Golem) CLOSE-RANGE COMBAT: A
|
AFFILIATION: "Villain"
QUIRK RANK: S (Will be using it up to about B- persuasion and can be resisted or broken over time even if under ranked)
QUIRK OVERVIEW: "Soul Sway" is a quirk that allows for the user's words to resonate in the souls of whoever hears them. Those caught by his quirk feel the compulsion to enact whatever commands the user gives, even if it contradicts their own desires. The closer he is, the more inclined they'll feel to follow his orders. (Acts on and against Presence) |
CHARACTER OVERVIEW:For the purposes of this exam, Prophet is acting as a villain who is known for using his quirk to manipulate others into performing crimes on his behalf. In addition to his natural charisma, Prophet is easily able to bend people to his will and he is more than comfortable with weaponizing others to fight for him. In fact, it's his favorite deterrent for dealing with opposition. Additionally, at Prophet's side there will at least be various C+ rank quirk wielders that he has manipulated into defending him via Soul Sway. The particulars of their quirks will be revealed if approached.AWARENESS: A- CONSTITUTION: B- DEXTERITY: B+ PRESENCE: S SPEED: B STRENGTH: B CLOSE-RANGE COMBAT: B Fun Fact: He is actually the pro hero known as Sway.
| AFFILIATION: UA applicant
QUIRK RANK: B
QUIRK OVERVIEW: Yama's quirk, UnReality, allows him to summon illusionary constructs of great strength that can very much interact with the world. These constructs may take on some aspects of his opponents fears if he makes eye contact with them, otherwise they are of Yama's imagining, usually taking the form of a demon, ogre, or oni. |
CHARACTER OVERVIEW:Yamashiro Masato, or Yama, is a driven hero aspirant that attended one of Japan's many Hero Prep schools. He is as confident as he is quiet. A true loner. He's also just as likely to hurt as he is to help in the context of UAU's entrance exam. After all, there are only so many points to go around. Sora found herself idly clenching and unclenching her hands as she looked up at the gate of the exam venue. Her mind was full of idle thoughts to pass the time, a cool move to pull off, an awesome pose to strike, a cool one liner to say, and questions like ‘I wonder how much goes into the infrastructure and maintenance budget of UA?’. She didn’t dwell on any one topic for long, she wasn’t here to think about those things after all.
"Greetings, hero-aspirants! I hope you're all ready, for the exam is about to begin," The sudden turning on of the screen and the opening words of a hero, SuperNova if she remembered correctly, jarred her out of her idle thoughts. ‘A mock city, rescue and contain.’ She noted, listening to what the hero on the screen had to say. Hand clenched and unclenched.
‘It’s almost like a game, robot enemies, robot civvies, taking them out or taking them back depending on the type.’ It was almost amusing. ‘Better it be a game here instead of out there I guess.’ “Plus Ultra.” She cheered quietly to herself at the end of the explanation. The gates swung open and she found herself following the lead of the others who started pouring in. She brought her left arm up to her face in an attempt to block the cold, snow, and wind and while she adapted to the environment.
A few steps past the gate she brought the arm down to her side as handgun appeared in her hand. She adjusted her grip on the weapon for until it was comfortably in her hand before she emptied it of its bullets by firing it at villain robots as she made her way into a mock building to rescue some civilian robots. The emptied gun was discarded as it vanished into smoke.

Post by Leo Springs on Jun 28, 2023 3:33:39 GMT
UAU, he had finally made it. Leo stood amongst the few dozen applicants that would be participating in the exam, he had somehow managed to pass the written portion of the exam all the cramming he had done with the old man had seemed to pay off. The speedster’s fingers idly rubbed the embroidered back of his bomber jacket, it was a gift given to him from the old man before he began the entrance exams, the geezer had said he had to dress the part if he was truly going to claim the nickname he had given the young boxer. Leo smirked remembering all the lectures and drills the old man had crammed into his head during their time together, “I’m not gonna let that all go ta waste, just wait you geezer we’ll show em.”
Leo’s thoughts were interrupted by the large screen in the waiting area turning on. Looking up Leo watched as SuperNova delivered their speech giving the potential new students information about what their test would entail. The speedster sucked his teeth in annoyance of course it was robots, one of the things his quirk didn’t work on. It didn’t matter though he would still take care of them even if they wouldn’t be affected by Zone, it was unfortunate that the “civilians” they were to rescue were robots as well he wouldn’t be able to tell if they were in Zone either it seemed he would have to try and find them the old fashioned way. Or at least that was the plan until the rest of the information was given, it was cold, and Leo loved the cold. It helped keep him cool when using his quirk so even if there wasn’t much that could be affected theoretically he should be able to keep his quirk going for a decent amount of time. The other bit of interesting information was why it was cold, there was an actual person causing the storm, that meant there was something he could actually do.
Pulling on his jacket and checking his hand wraps Leo knelt down in a sprinter’s start, taking a deep breath before exhaling focusing everything he had on the closed gates. He didn’t hear SuperNova’s cry of plus ultra or the cacophony of response cries from the other participants, he didn’t hear the idle chatter of participants, the only sound Leo heard was the sound of his own heartbeat and steady breathing. A familiar feeling started swelling in the boxer, a feeling like a caged animal that wanted out, an animal that’s only purpose was to devour everything before it, and it was starving. Right as the gates began to open Leo surged forward weaving his way in between and around other participants crashing forwards into the icy storm. He was on a mission, he knew he wasn’t suited to deal with the machines he was much better at dealing with living beings so that’s what he was going to do, if the villain creating the icy conditions wanted to bring a storm to this fight then Leo would bring a storm of his own. He would live up to his name the old man had given him.

Entrance Exam: Cold Front |
"If you feel yourself hitting up against your limit, remember for what cause you clench your fists" |
And so in spite of their fears, and with courage in their hearts, the latest group of UA Entrance Examinees pierced the curtain of the unknown and plunged into the frigid depths of Grounds Beta. The first of many villainous robots that greeted the hero-aspirants fell to Sora's fire, while Leo blazed a trail between the robotic line and ventured towards the heart of the city. Three more of the five remaining villain bots left to greet the students fell to a green ghostly blade and the skeletal arm that wielded it. Yama's Oni was just as swift to fade as it was to form. Then, he too took into the city.
The rest of the students near and around Sora would disperse. Some chased the simulated cries of civilian dummy-bots while others went hunting for Glacier, Prophet, and the many minor villains plaguing the Beta Ground's streets. Sora would soon find the first street mostly devoid of life, a singular cry emanating from the building she approached.
Meanwhile, Leo would find the treacherous, howling winds of the storm grow fiercer and fiercer as he paved the way ahead. Three villain-bots would take aim with their ranged armament, armed with stun rounds, and fire the speedster's way. What's more, his every move through the storm was felt by hurricane's architect.
"Now that is a bold one," he'd muse, sitting atop a spire at the mock city's heart.
OOC
Sora's path is currently clear of villains, but she's also alone to face whatever threat may lie between her and the civilian she hears calling out. Leo is being fired upon by three villain-bots, and Glacier is aware of his movement. Yama is moving deeper into the city. Continue as you wish! template by Magpie of Adoxography

“Okay, keep it together, everyone’s off doing their own thing, you can do this.”
Sora bravely stepped forth to begin her first rescue of the exam. She kept her hands empty in case she needed both hands for something, with her Quirk a weapon is never too far from her hands anyways. She burst through the entrance of the building and started to look for where the cry was coming from.
She gave the interior a quick scan with her eyes before she moved in, managing to find a single civilian robot further inside the building and began the task of carrying, guiding, and pulling it back to the area past the gates. She just hoped that nothing would get in her way of getting a point out of this or else the entire task would be considered…pointless.
She barely stopped a laugh from coming out of her as she pressed on.

Every inhale Leo took was like ice entering his lungs followed by the cloud of condensation that his breath left hanging in the air for only milliseconds before the howling winds of the storm carried it away. Flakes of snow and ice whipped by his head as he continued to push into the city, he couldn't see any other students around the speedster assumed they had stopped once they had made first contact with either the civilian bots or the would be villain machines.
He didn't mind being alone; he was used to it and it made his job easier, meant he didn't need to worry about anyone other than his target getting caught up in Zone if he had to activate it. Leo's thoughts were interrupted as the first of many shots whizzed by him, looking through the storm he could see his assailants for a brief moment before diving out of the line of fire into a nearby alleyway. "Great had ta be the ones with guns huh, couldn't give me one of tha close range ones could ya." Although he complained the punk couldn't help but smile as he looked around the alley his eyes falling on a wheeled dumpster with what appeared to be a metal pipe with an L connector on the end sticking out of it "Oh yeah it's all coming together"
After the first volley of shots ended Leo put his plan into action. Well plan was far too strong a word to use for what the punk was doing, with a roar Leo burst around the corner of the alley pushing the wheeled dumpster in front of him as fast as he could go using the dumpster as mobile cover, the metal pipe that once resided in the dumpster now found itself in the punk's hand. Leo braced as the second volley of rounds slammed into the dumpster the metal denting but holding strong as he closed the distance between himself and the robots.
"GET SOME!" the speedster shouted as the dumpster crashed into the first of the three robots, the weight and momentum behind it causing it and the robot to go crashing into the side of a building leaving two more shooters for Leo to deal with. As the second robot swiveled to point it's gun at him he spun the pipe that rested in his hand up and jammed it into the barrel of the robot's weapon causing it to explode, a black cloud of smoke rising from the now destroyed robot. "Always forward" The old man's words rang loud in the boxer's head as Leo darted through the smoke as fast as he could fists raised to his face in his fighting stance, the robot raised it's weapon to fire on the encroaching would be university student but the shots wouldn't land true as Leo weaved to the side the stun rounds sailing by his left ear, "OORRRAAA" With another roar he threw an overhand right his arm crossing over the robots weapon finding purchase in the robots camera shattering the lens and pushing his fist deep inside crushing as much of the electronics as he could. Leo removed his fist licking the blood that had formed on his knuckles from the blow before turning back towards the center of the city and beginning his hunt once more.

Entrance Exam: Cold Front |
"If you feel yourself hitting up against your limit, remember for what cause you clench your fists" |
Grounds Beta became the quietest of war zones, the din of far off battles muted by the raging winds. The occasion pop pop pop of bullet fire and the brief booms of faraway explosions were all that might reach Sora or Leo, the former student far behind the rest of the examinees and the latter far ahead. Yama would come across the mechanical carcasses Leo left behind. One more machine, the one left behind at the entrance of the exam had given chase. To its own detriment it appeared, as Yama turned and cut the robot down just as he had the previous three. Then, he was off again, trailing Leo's wake.
Back near the entrance, Sora's journey to to the first civilian bot would go uninterrupted. It was her exit that would be met by the enemy. Just as she exited the building, three smaller villain bots, almost human looking and wielding rifles (also using stun rounds), marched up to the entrance. Several meters behind them, a single Imperial bot loomed, slowly approaching. The civilian bot Sora escorted began to cry out in fear, mimicking a human's pitch perfectly. The three humanoid bots would open fire, while the Imperial bot continued its approach. If it found itself close enough to Sora, it would swing its two large tails in an attempt to swat her into the building.
Leo, on the other hand, ran a course fraught with peril. His mad dash toward the storms heart garnered the attention of many a foe. Though he dusted them with his extreme speeds, four villain bots including two Victory types and two Venators gave chase. On the occasions they came within range, the Victories would fire their stun round machines guns, and the Venators would launch small concussive explosives in his direction. Distance was on his side, but if he didn't face the threat before reaching his target, they would inevitably reach him once he did.
OOC
Sora has exited the building with the civilian bot to find three humanoid robots wielding rifles and one Imperial bot blocking her path. The humanoid robots are to mimic common thugs so their materials are made to simulate your average Joe crook. That said, she is outnumbered and the Imperial bot will hit hard if the blow does land.
Leo on the other hand has two Victory bots and two Venators chasing him since he's plunging further into the city. They aren't likely to catch up to him, but if he engages with any of the bigger bads without dealing with the bots, he'll find himself greatly outnumbered later.
Yama is basically running down the same path as Leo, but hasn't reached the above mentioned bots yet. Once more, proceed as you wish! template by Magpie of Adoxography

Sora’s Quirk came with many benefits. A swiss army knife for guns as an armoury for any situation, a way to never be unarmed in case of an emergency…and a veritable source of knowledge and experience when it came to the basics of all things gun. So when she saw the general shape of the rifle in the robots’ hands poised to fire very little else mattered in that moment.
She dove back through the building’s entrance, dragging the civilian bot with her as she forced it into cover. Her mind was racing under pressure, three active shooters and a larger robot that she didn’t want to meet the business end of any of its parts. Actions were hastily planned and discarded in seconds as she went through her mental index of arms for one to use for the occasion.
Eventually a weapon formed in her hands as she peeked out of the entryway that was being used as cover and took aim. What was be dealt with first was the covering fire from the shooters that was making it harder to focus on the bigger threat. The semi-automatic rifle in her hand roaring to life as she pressed down on the trigger and rained bullets on the machines.
