Entrance Exam: Cold Front |
"If you feel yourself hitting up against your limit, remember for what cause you clench your fists" |
UAU's Entrance Exams. Hundreds had applied to Japan's greatest Hero University, but only a few dozen were offered a chance at the exam, and far fewer were expected to pass. Kubo stretched at the front of the room, readying for the challenge ahead. Where others sought their courage or fell before their fears, he stood confident. He was ready - had been training for years now. This exam was all that stood between him and the prestigious of hero academies. How much longer now before the esteemed university clued them in on the particulars of the coming exam? Or had the test already begun? Was the wait simply one more measure with which to separate the wheat from the chaff?
Finally, the large screen at the head of the room flickered on. It framed one of UAU's more famous heroes, SuperNova, rumored to be one of the greatest pyrokinetic types in the nation. This wasn't the first time he'd given this little speech and wasn't likely to be the last. Still, he firmly believed in its worth.
"Greetings, hero-aspirants! I hope you're all ready, for the exam is about to begin," he would stop with a brief pause. "I won't hold you up with many words of wisdom and inspiration today. You know why you're here. It's up to you to prove you have what it takes, not only to us, but yourselves, to become heroes. Now, let's get to it. Beyond the gates, you'll find Grounds Beta, a mock city of substantial size. For the purposes of this exam, the city has been hit by a cold front of villainous nature. You are the first responders, and as such, have been tasked with rescue operations and villain containment," SuperNova would pause again, allowing the applicants to digest the first details.
"As I said, behind this storm is a villain, Glacier, who has initiated an all-out attack on the city. You'll find enemies of robotic nature and otherwise playing the part of our main Glacier's underlings, all looking to cause damage and bring harm to the people. Speaking of which, you will also find a number of robotic dummies and actors in need of rescue. Defeating villains, both high and low, and rescuing civilians will earn you a varying number of points by which you shall be judged. Rescued civilians must be returned to the marked area just beyond the gates which shall act as a safe zone," SuperNova would give the students another moment. Through various cameras and sensors, he could see each and every one of them. Some appeared ready to vomit. Others were hopping in place, prepared to dart straight into the thick of it.
"At any point, you may return here to conclude your participation in the exam, but remember that your fellow UAU applicants may be out there accumulating more points by performing heroic actions, and there are only so many points to go around. There are no requirements to see the exam completed other than to do your best, but those that score below a certain threshold - shall fail. Remember why you're here. Whatever it is that drove you to UAU's gates, clutch it close. Draw strength from it. Give it your best, and go beyond Plus Ultra!"
Without another word the gates would open, marking the beginning of the exam. Half the students, Kubo included, immediately poured out of the waiting area and into the frigid cold of the mist beyond. Dusting snow had covered the interior of the city, while the outer edges were accosted by frigid winds. Power lines were blown over into some of the mock buildings, within which there were dummy androids calling out for help. Various villain robots patrolled the streets looking to stir up some trouble, and deeper within the storm there were Glacier's ice clones lining the rooftops of some of the buildings.
The exam had begun.
OOC
"Everything is theoretically impossible until it's done." Hey all! So here's a quick summary of the details covered above. There is one "big villain" in the city, but you are not required to defeat him to pass the exam (he's designed to be pretty difficult). Likewise, there are robotic villains, like in the source material's exam, that are causing trouble as well as some of Glacier's ice clones. That said, there are far more dummies and actors throughout Grounds Beta that are just acting as civilians in need.
You do not need to interact with the applicant NPC, Kubo, unless you wish to. He's really only here for me to interact with you on the applicant side if needed. That may come in the form of help or hindrance. There are also other student NPCs that you may use to some degree (just don't go having them do illogical things like throw the exam just to help your character or anything else that ridiculous).
As for the environment, there is a thick, frigid fog wafting around Grounds Beta and bringing with it some heavy winds. Snow is beginning to dust the inner parts of the city. As stated above, rescued civilians need to be returned to a designated "safe zone" just outside the gates that lead into the grounds from the waiting area. Feel free to call hits on robotic villains or any smaller threats. If you have any other questions, feel free to DM me or drop a message in our group chat. The exam should feel difficult ICly, but I'm always willing to change things up to accommodate your cool scenes and character moments as long as it's nothing outlandish (no displaying All Might levels of strength in an entrance exam xD). Most importantly, have fun!

AFFILIATION: "Villain"
QUIRK RANK: S- (mostly utilizing it for the cold front, will go up to A+ in combat)
QUIRK OVERVIEW: "Cryomancy" is a cold quirk that allows the user to summon ice and a thick, chilled fog. He can use this to fire projectiles or create weapons and armor. Additionally, he can create ice clones of himself. As an ultimate move, he can become an ice golem where his strength, endurance, and icy "firepower" are increased. |
CHARACTER OVERVIEW:Though he'd rather be out in the field, Glacier has volunteered to play one of the villains as UAU's request for this exam. Too lazy to come up with an alternate name, Glacier is just using his hero alias as a villain name. His preferred method of attack is to beset his enemies in his frigid fog, which he can sense them through, to slow them down and dampen their senses, then strike hard and fast with his ice clones. AWARENESS: B- (A+ within the cold front) CONSTITUTION: B- (A as Golem) DEXTERITY: B- (D+ as Golem) PRESENCE: C+ SPEED: B- (C- as Golem) STRENGTH: B- (A as Golem) CLOSE RANGE COMBAT: A-

AFFILIATION: UA applicant
QUIRK RANK: B
QUIRK OVERVIEW: Kubo's quirk, Umbral Arms, allows him to manifest dark gauntlets around his arms, with which he can utilize extremely powerful black lightning attacks. Even after firing this black lightning, Kubo maintains limited control over the attacks, allowing him to change their trajectory to some extent. Additionally, by clapping his hands together, he can cause a small yet incredibly powerful shockwave AoE around himself. |
CHARACTER OVERVIEW:Kubota Kohaku, or Kubo, is a driven and cocky hero aspirant that attended one of Japan's many Hero Prep schools. His prior education in heroics has left him quite confident, believing himself far and ahead of the rest of his cohort. That said, he will work with others if it serves to benefit himself. Otherwise, he's just as likely to be a hinderance. AWARENESS: B- CONSTITUTION: C- DEXTERITY: C PRESENCE: C SPEED: C+ STRENGTH: C CLOSE RANGE COMBAT: B-

Looking around, he's barely surprised that he's the only one here who's a Varioform - (a word that's only recently entered the public lexicon as an alternative to "inhuman" or "mutant freak"). Boji glazed over as he resisted the urge to roll. Not 5 seconds into the entrance exam and he's already getting an idea of what he's going to have to put up with while attending a predominately humanoid school; this whole crop of candidates weren't even trying to hide their curiosity at Boji's form. He hoped that these were the kinda students they don't let in, but that was wishful thinking. He bet not even UAU's so-called prestige makes it exempt from seeing everything through the narrow view of the "human shape". Not that Boji really cared thaaaat deeply about it right now? Yes, the mindset that "personhood" is inextricably linked to "personshape" affects him nearly everyday in mostly subtle but occasionally overtly hurtful ways, and sure some of his other old friends and classmates would get much more upset, but it wasn't something he would raise a huge stink over right now, not on the verge of his entrance exam! If anything, it made him that much more determined to stand out- er, in the good way. Stand out with success, not with the fact that he's a giant floating eyeball... Looking around, he was already doing the latter. The uncountable glances and whispers and fingers pointed in his direction had been happening since the moment he arrived. Wherever he went, he was a spectacle to other people regardless of whether or not he wanted to be, and he very much did not want to be. Sure, it was novel and sorta fun to have the attention when he was 5 years old, at least until he got bullied out of elementary school that is. But after another 14 years of the same sorta negative attention he finally started actively disliking it. If people were going to stare, he wanted it to be because of his accomplishments and not his looks. Thankfully, all the jibber-jabber subsided once a proctor called their attention to give the details of the exam. A mock blizzard with mock robot henchmen and mock victims in the mock city of mock Beta. Er- Grounds Beta. Right. He didn't really understand what the proctor meant by "substantial size" until the doors opened and he was awestruck. Half of the aspirants immediately poured into action, but poor lil sheltered Boji was left speechless looking at the surroundings while listlessly following behind the group bobbing forward at a slow pace. W-wait, what was he doing?! The exam started, it was kick-butt time! REN May Twenty-First

I know you don’t tell many people, but heroing costs you a lot more than the rest of us. Are you sure that’s what you want kiddo?”[break][break] The man speaking was a red-haired individual. Staff at UA would recognize him as one of the teachers. An ex-pro named Repulsor or in this case, ‘Uncle Satori’ to the young woman May standing in front of him at the back of the gathering before things kicked off. [break][break] May was dressed in light athletic garb and had her hand-etched bow slung over one shoulder. She looked up at her uncle and smiled, “Heroing costs me no more than anyone else. You’re all willing to put your life on the line, mine is just…more literal. This is what I’ve wanted to do for the last five years, you know that. Backing out now would make me a coward.” [break][break] Satori smiled down and then pulled May into a tight squeeze. [break][break] “Well said. I told your mum I’d try and convince you. I’ve done that. So go use that kickass quirk of yours and become the hero I never could! I’ll be watching on the monitors.”[break][break] May hugged him back and then the two went their separate ways. May joined the rest of the group just as they were getting ‘the briefing’ on what to expect today. Villainous robots. An actual ‘villain’ played by a pro and even civilian bots they’d have to rescue. There was a lot that many of them could do within this exam. Her uncle had refused to give her any tips, citing that she needed to figure out what being a hero meant on her own. [break][break] May ran her two gloves fingers over the string of her bow, pastel pink hair tied back in a loose ponytail to keep it out of her eyes. This was it. She had to prove herself and earn her spot. She didn’t know what that meant yet. Would she just shoot some robots? Would she rush up to the Villain and try to incapacitate him? Or would she aim for the rescuing of the civilians? [break][break] Her thoughts swirled about in her head, her ADHD kicking in as she began to overthink literally everything. It was only the sharp voice of her Uncle that tugged her out of her own thoughts while she was standing there. [break][break] Everyone was already gone. [break][break] “Get in there!”[break][break] May took off at a run straight through the gates. Her poor choice of clothing was very quickly apparent as the cold rushed over her. She winced. A top with no bloody sleeves. Whose idea was that? Hers. So that clothing didn’t affect her aim. The tattoo on her right arm swirled almost as if it was as ready as she was. [break][break] It was like a winter apocalypse before her. Mist hung thick in the air, power-lines criss-crossed the streets, sparking dangerously at them. May took in as many details as she possibly could when they got in. As someone who relied on aiming and firing at her opponents she had to know where they were. Silhouettes on the rooftops, robots faintly patrolling the streets ahead. The sound of wind in her ears. [break][break] She had to admit. This was a LOT bigger than she had anticipated. This was very much like an entire city. She looked at her other classmates and then steeled her gaze. She was as ready as she was ever going to be. [break][break] She took off at a run straight down the main street. Let fate decide what she’d run into! [break][break]
Ren’s jaw all but dropped to the floor when the massive gates parted to reveal what lied behind the walls of U.A. University. Buildings, stores, houses, factories, construction, running water, electricity, gas. The whole nine yards. They built an entire city inside the campus. That’s when he knew that this was the real deal, and that he’d made the right call coming here.
[break][break]
Back in school, the last year had been a sprint to prepare as many students for the Common Test for University Admissions. In contrast to that, Ren had opted to invest the springtime of his youth differently. He knew he wouldn’t make it far in a standardized exam. He wouldn’t get the outrageous scores you needed to get into something like engineering, medicine or law. He just wasn’t good enough for it, and to be honest with you, most of those careers didn’t really appeal to him.
[break][break]
He wanted to help people, to make a positive difference in the world, and there was only one way a guy like him could do that. It wasn’t going to be easy, but if he just gave it his all and then some, then anything was possible. He spent every minute after class going to the gym, taking classes at every dojo he could find, and practicing in front of his school’s archery range. He was in form, his skills were as sharp as they were going to get, and he’d gotten enough of a good grasp on his Quirk to prevent the massive bouts of internal and external bleeding that came with using it. He was going to pass this entrance exam and become a Hero. There wasn’t so much as a doubt in his mind.
[break][break]
At least, until he found out about the rules.
[break][break]
“Cold… front?” Standing there, clad head to toe in a suit of metal armor, donning a fully-metallic sword, spear, shield, daggers, and climbing equipment, even Ren couldn’t help but see the problem. He was not dressed for the occasion, to say the least. His steel suit was far from what you would call insulated. Chances were, he was probably staring down the barrel of hypothermia for the next couple of weeks. With a deep breath, he’d push those thoughts to the back of his mind. He’d just have to clench his teeth and power through, because that’s what a Hero did, right?
[break][break]
The moments before the buzzer hit felt like minutes. Everyone could hear each layer of plate and chain link rustling as Ren anxiously looked around from one side to the other. The first thing he saw definitely caught his attention. Not too far to the left, he could see an eye. Yup, just eyeball, floating around. He didn’t know if that was a whole person, or just part of someone’s Quirk. There was also this cool dude, black hair, weird gloves, seemed like he knew what he was doing, which only helped make him feel just a little bit out of his depth.
[break][break]
One thing that helped him feel a little more at ease was seeing someone facing similar struggles, a girl whose fashion choices seemed about as fitting for the exam as his, not only that, but judging by her bow and arrow, she seemed to share his enthusiasm for old-fashioned weaponry. As usual, though, his curiosity was not able to best his insecurities. He decided against bothering any of these fine heroic prospects. After all, they were just seconds away from the most important test in their lives. The last thing they’d want is to have some awkward loser bother them at the eleventh hour.
[break][break]
And so, the doors opened wide, revealing both the city and the cold blue fog that laid siege on it. A sea of students flooded through the doors, some at supersonic speeds, others sprintin towards some of the nearby buildings, and that one girl from before stayed behind the gates for what had to feel like an hour. He hated to see it, but Ren couldn’t really judge. He was far from the fastest thing alive, especially with his 5 foot nothing body lugging over 50 pounds in armor and equipment around. Needless to say, he wasn’t going to be breaking any records.
[break][break]
Still, he wouldn’t need to waste any time thinking about where to go. Given how horrible his math skills were, he had no way to calculate how many people he needed to save, how many villains he could afford to fight or what the exact effects of this catastrophe were. He needed to save people, and that was all that mattered. The people most in danger were in the eye of this ice storm. Only one thought coursed through his mind. He needed to get there as soon as possible, and from there… well, he’d have to improvise. So armed with his sword, his shield, and his single brain cell, he charged headfirst into danger, making a bee line through the main road.
[break][break]
Luckily, he wasn’t the only one with that idea. The girl with the bow and arrow was quick to pick up the pace, eventually passing the armored student. In between the jungling of chain and steel, Ren finally gathered enough courage to open his mouth. “H-Hey, are you good?” The girl could hear the voice slowly getting further away with every stride she took. “Looked like you were having some trouble at the start there.”

Entrance Exam: Cold Front |
"If you feel yourself hitting up against your limit, remember for what cause you clench your fists" |
And so in spite of their fears, and with courage in their hearts, the latest group of UA Entrance Examinees pierced the curtain of the unknown and plunged into the frigid depths of Grounds Beta. With only the freezing cold to greet them just outside the gates, the young hero aspirants were free to take off into whichever direction they so wished. A few speedsters raced off to the closest cries of a civilian dummy. One of the more ardent examinees, surrounded by fiery sprites, charged toward the a villain bot in the distance. With the flush of his arm, the fire sprites barrages the bot, melting some of its armor. The fight took them around a street corner and out of sight. Kubo spearheaded the forward charge. He wasn't the fastest of the examinees, but where others split off, he continued down the same main avenue as May & Ren, only about one block ahead. There, he would find five villain bots, three Victory types and two Venators attacking a storefront where several civilian dummies were taking holed up. "Such simplicities are a waste of time," he muttered, leaping into the air and unleashing a single arc of black lightning on one of the Venators.
That would earn him a few points, but the surest way to pass this thing was to eliminate the true villain, Glacier. He would defeat and apprehend the pretend villain before any of the others even reached him.
Meanwhile, the machines formed a circle in search of their attacker. One of the Victory times found the correct target, giving Kubo chase, while the Venator called attention to the others still advancing from the starting gate. One Victory type would begin to charge, firing the Gatling gun that comprised the bots' right arms as it closed the distance, and using the shield of its left arm to defend itself or otherwise swat at the examinees if the distance was closed. The Gatling gun fired stun rounds that possessed surprising stopping power and would numb any part of the body they hit. Take too many hits and the victim would be paralyzed temporarily - essentially considered "dead" for the purpose of the exam. Meanwhile, the Venator would launch explosives from its back. Like the Victory bot's weapon, these explosives didn't possess enough concussive or chemical force to easily kill by themselves, but they would send any nearby targets flying, and cause heavy damage. However, the explosives were launched behind the two examinees to deny them the chance to retreat. The last of the Victory bots would continue cleaving at the storefront in an attempt to reach the civilian dummies within.
OOC
To summarize the above, May & Ren have one Victory bot charging them while firing stun rounds, and will swing its shield arm if it gets close. There is a Venator bot bombarding them as well, albeit a bit behind them to cut them off from retreat. Another Victory is trying to cleave its way into a barricaded store to reach some civilian dummies, and the final Victory bot on the street is chasing Kubo who is probably about two blocks ahead of May & Ren now. Boji so far is safe since he's near the start gate, but if he pushes down the main avenue he'll encounter the above scene. Otherwise, he is free to explore. As a reminder, feel free to call shots on the villain bots and take them down at your own discretion. Just try to leave some for the rest of those partaking in the encounter (though also feel free to add reinforcements if you wish). template by Magpie of Adoxography

Boji frenetically looked around, seeing prospects throwing their quirks left and right. He tried to zip around a corner onto a side street where it appeared there was a smaller concentration of other people, but even then the robots were being torn asunder almost as quickly as they appeared. 'I-if I can't get points beating up bad guys, maybe I could save-!' he heard the pre-recorded shouts of people in distress, but he was still cut off as several other students emerged from a bombed out storefront with civi-bots on their shoulders. 'What the heeeeck! At this rate I'm not even going to get a chance to fail! If this were a real situation, I'd say it's plenty handled and I'd-' a cold breeze swept through the street, with snow dusting the air and ground. Boji shivered but felt something on the wind. It carried with it a song, or.. a smell, or a whatever-it-was that betrayed it's unnatural nature to Boji's quirk. There was the faintest hint of someone's quirk's manipulations in the air and he knew exactly where that would be. The bad guy! 'Er-, but there was no way anyone here would be dumb enough to try and take down a pro-hero right?' he zipped and weaved through debris being flung all around back to the central street where he saw that, yes, there were in fact other students making a B-line straight in the direction of where this cold weather was coming from. Boji knew he should be focused more on his own exam results, but something about the unearned confidence of those way in the lead (named kubo) gave him a sinking feeling they'll soon need just as much rescuing as the other dummies, only from themselves. ==== Boji returned to the main street and is picking up the rear of the whole group, a block back from Ren and May!
