"-used to have to find ways to spend the afternoons without going home," Miroru explained as she led Thea towards the Watarium, a museum for contemporary art in Shibuya. "I'm sure you've probably skimmed a lotta memories about the place, but it's usually dead right after school, so it was a solid place to go and wander and just be alone with my thoughts, you know?" She glanced over at Thea, tilting her head. "That's a pretty nice thing to share, right? Someplace neat that's quiet, not super crowded, and changes things around a lot?"
They were still a good block or two away, but already the building stood out, its architecture just as unique as their university's! I can pay no price too great for justice.

[attr="class","skullbody"]The two decided to go somewhere less than hectic for once, at Mimi's behest. It was a welcome change of pace from the bender-inducing raves Thea often dragged Miroru to and a far cry from the rigors of UA's curriculum. "So you'd kill time at an art museum, you absolute nerd," She said with a smile. A playful shot across the bow that showed Thea was in high spirits. Unusually so.[break][break]
"I've taken a few. I don't really go searching for art and stuff like that. They're boring and kinda hard to find." More often than not, the mentat took memories based on what she described as emotional volume. Highest highs and lowest lows. They were easier to find than a night at the museum and served the dual purpose of being the most easily weaponized should she need them. [break][break]
"It's a nice thing to share." Thea didn't care about the museum one lick. She was just glad to be anywhere with the vulpine girl whose insistence on being there confused the Mentat. Something she thought should be impossible given the constant chorus in her mind. Somehow, the fox's presence managed to quiet the steady stream of opinions and consternation that echoed in the back of her mind. [break][break]
"Building looks stupid," she mocked the oddity of the design. "Are they running a special exhibit or something?" Thea gestured at what appeared to be a small crowd gathered by the museum's entrance by tugging Mimi's sleeve and pointing with a gloved hand. "So much for quiet," there was a hint of disappointment in her voice, "Might as well see what the big deal is."[break][break]

"Alright, first? Top TIER absolute nerd~" She studied thermodynamics and electrical engineering to use her quirk to its highest extent. She owned that! "Second off, I challenge you- where would YOU go to be by yourself in Tokyo? We've got over six THOUSAND people per square kilometer here. Home wasn't an option," Miroru stated simply. "Sometimes I just wanted to have someplace I could exist and listen to music and nobody would bother me. And the nice thing about a museum is you're supposed to be quiet- so nobody tries to talk to you eith-awwwwwwh."
She trailed off as she caught sight of the crowd, too, pouting at the foiling of her plan. "Well- it kinda looks like it might have the same architect as the university? So maybe "industrialized illogic" is a popular architectural aesthetic..?" She shrugged, snickering. "At least we'll be making new memories together. That's kind of a novelty, right?" She smiled, her heart fluttering a beat at the tug on her sleeve. She still wasn't sure what about that meant so much to her, but it did, and all she could do was ride the wave and find out in the long run. "Yeah, let's go take a look."
Getting closer, the posters and banners for the short-term exhibition became far more notable. The art collection of a prominent philanthropist was on display, the large business owner funding the show himself as a charitable donation to the Watarium. The fox-tailed girl glanced to Thea, gauging her interest in attending the museum anyway, ready to suggest something else if it seemed more than Thea was up for.

[nospaces] [attr="class","skullhover"] [attr="class","skullimg"] [attr="class","skulltitle"]間違い [attr="class","skulloverlap"]How do we forgive ourselves for all the things we did not become? [attr="class","skullbody"]"You challenge me?" Thea scoffed at the idea "I can think of a dozen places cooler than this to kill my time. A dozen more if you wanted to listen to music." Already her mind was cataloging forgotten places in the form of abandoned temples and supposedly haunted buildings. There were so many places one could run and hide if they well and truly wanted to be alone. However, their definitions of alone were wildly different. [break][break]
"I prefer brutalism. They always make buildings look so cool, like a villain's lair or something out of a comic book. If I ever run like a hero agency or whatever, the whole building is gonna be a monument to brutalist design and bad vibes." [break][break]
The mention of making memories together struck Thea in the chest like a cannon. Despite the idea of memories and the taking of them being an ever-present thought in the back of her mind, she never once considered that the moments they had together were also memories, fresh ones, that she didn't have to steal. "Yeah, novelty. I like that," she maintained her grip on Miroru's sleeve and 'accidentally' brushed the back of her finger against the fox's. "And that too is now a memory," she thought, replaying the moment in her mind a few times as if to be sure it was really there: a memory that was new, and happy, and hers.[break][break]
They approached the crowd, and while Thea wanted to go somewhere else, she knew that this museum meant something to Mimi and by proxy, now meant something to her. "Looks like some sort of special show. Ugh, vip passes are sold out." Using her teeth, the mentat pulled the glove off her free hand and stuffed it into her bag. "Lucky for you, I've always got VIP access," She looked Miroru over in a faux judgment, "I guess you're pretty enough to be my plus one."[break][break]
As soon as they entered the crowd, the mentat put on her act. She's mastered the myriad ways one could casually touch someone they didn't know, and with each touch, she took a part of them for herself and gave back a dose of happiness and an order to move. The crowd parted, and the pair were at the front in a matter of seconds. Or at least they would have been were it not for the well-to-do businessman whose face was plastered all over the entrance making an appearance.[break][break]
"Such a crowd and so early. I hope you all have a wonderful time," the man thundered as he approached the crowd and thanked everyone with a smile and a handshake. When the man got to Thea, their handshake lasted a smidge longer than usual, and when the contact broke, she flinched slightly before reaching back at the man only to have a bodyguard slap her hand out of the air. She turned to Mimi and briefly brushed her palm against the fox's fingers long enough to send the words. "He's killing people today."[break][break]

"Big words from a little Latina who won't name her answers~" Miroru teased back, not out of actual doubt but simply taking the shot as it presented itself. As ever, Miroru's taunts felt more like invitations to prove her cleverness or affectionate barbs than any sort of attempt at dominance over Thea.
Miroru tilted her head at the idea of a brutalist hero office. "Mm... I suppose. I can see the effectiveness of cultivating a dark rep with villains. I'm sure lots respond well to fear. I'd... I'd like to think that a hero dedicating themselves to the improvement of all sides of society, including theirs, might convince them to avoid adding ancillary charges like resisting arrest, but..." But this Miroru wasn't sure that was at all doable. That Miroru had lived a very different life, sufficient to nurture that kind of hope.
This Miroru just hoped she could get as many people home safe as she could.
Miroru smiled to herself at the feeling of Thea nudging into her own touch, letting the other girl clad her little affections in plausible deniability and instead focusing on the conversation.
At the bit about being her plus one, Miroru's cheeks lit up and she laughed, noting the smiling faces of those who stepped away, deciding to herself that a touch of happiness seemed a fair trade for a couple steps in one direction. "I've seen plus ones on the TV before- they only hafta be pretty if the star isn't. You could take anyone~"
It wasn't until that injected convesation that Miroru's ears flicked back and she understood that something was very wrong. She kept them both moving, but Thea could see the air shimmer and gleam as she turned it into a mirror to look back behind them, glancing at Thea to see if that was the person she was speaking about. Him? her look said. The benefactor?
This was about to be anything but a quiet visit to the museum if so.
I can pay no price too great for justice.

[nospaces] [attr="class","skullhover"] [attr="class","skullimg"] [attr="class","skulltitle"]間違い [attr="class","skulloverlap"]How do we forgive ourselves for all the things we did not become? [attr="class","skullbody"]Memory played in the back of Thea's mind like a record as she dissected the memory into its core parts. The benefactor, named Damien Greymourn or simply Grey to his friends, was a true connoisseur of the arts. His inherited fortune offered him access to the finest paintings and statures, and his business let him run some of the most prestigious displays of live music and performance one could get this far from Broadway. None of those satisfied him. At least not until he found himself online, faced with the darker sides of human whim and desire and enough Bitcoin to change a life in what ever way he chose. Grey clicked the link and paid the fee. He'd never seen a red room before then. He'd never give them up after. Tonight though, was unique. After years of watching, tonight was the night Grey would host his own show, the same kind he'd admired for so long.[break][break]
The mentat nodded after looking in the mirror Miroru produced from literal nothingness. Him.[break][break]
Thea looked around, trying to find a place where she could speak more freely. Already she'd used her quirk quite a bit, and if there were any other option, she'd take it, but there wasn't one, and with each step away that Grey took, time was short despite the seconds growing longer through the lens of the mentat's mind. She moved behind Miroru to her other side and casually took the redhead's hand.[break][break]
The mentat opened a mindscape between them. A realm of pure thought that moved at speeds beyond what words could ever hope to conveyed in a way that left no room for miscommunication. "See, he's doing this tonight." She showed the pertinent parts of the memory to Miroru. "I can't figure out where without grabbing him again, but his guards are eyeing me. Any ideas?" [break][break]
The situation was beyond her abilities, or more specifically, beyond the capabilities she was willing to use with Mimi around. The last thing Thea wanted her to see was Thea turning the crowd into thralls and overpowering Grey with sheer numbers before taking the information from him and making him turn himself in, assuming she'd leave enough of him intact after whatever she found in the rest of his mind.[break][break]

Miroru's hand tightened on Thea's as the memory was shared. No pull away, but Thea could feel the fox's heart racing. The redhead kept her face forward, away from the retreating quarry, but Thea could feel the overlaying flickers of Greymourn and her own father. Predators on high, guarded by fame and exposure and public opinion, with filthy darkness sequestered in the rotting corners of what should have been their hearts.
But despite all the damage her father did to others, to her, the magnitude of this predation made things brutally, horribly clear.
Greymourn was, somehow, worse.
Miroru kept a hand on Thea's as she spread her senses. In an instant, Thea's mind filled with a three-tone map of the entire building. Objects, where there was no infrared light presence- empty space, where infrared light was plentiful- and objects at or above body temp, which released a certain amount of infrared. The sense was three dimensional as well, not as cramped or limiting as sonar or radar.
Quickly, Miroru's mind discarded the crowded public areas. One benefit of the dense attendance was that all the areas that would be completely anathema to this horrendous display were easily identified and trimmed, leaving them with a skeletal map of the rest of the building.
"I'm not sure how to identify where it might happen. Somewhere in these rooms and hallways. How do we know which one?" The words came fast, strained. It was hard to focus. Miroru's sheer rage that someone would be murdering people for fun or profit- or worse- was screaming in the background. Outside the map, Thea could feel the rampant radiant energy of the sun pounding down, could feel the power grid seething in the walls, could feel Miroru's temptation to bring one or the other down on this monster.
Because that's what you did to monsters.
You hunted them.

[nospaces] [attr="class","skullhover"] [attr="class","skullimg"] [attr="class","skulltitle"]間違い [attr="class","skulloverlap"]How do we forgive ourselves for all the things we did not become? [attr="class","skullbody"]There was a practiced difference in how the two could exist in a shared Mindscape. For Thea, this was just another day and one of the least stressful ways to use her quirk. She only had to focus on containing her thoughts and not reaching into theirs. The information given on Thea's end was cold and precise, never anything more than exactly what she intended. What she received from Miroru was oft mixed with the idle thought and comparisons that riddle a person's mind. The little tweaks and whispers that from anyone else, would be harmless. [break][break]
She squeezed the fox's hand as if to say "focus" though she didn't loosen her grip as reflex took over like a crocodile with prey in its maw. As quickly as the map appeared, the mentat was already filling the voids of information with fragments of memory and bits of context from across her mind. The crowd out front provided the bulk of it. Between air ducts seen out of the corner of a stranger's eye and the stolen experience of a dozen construction workers and twice as many HVAC techs, the building's schematic took place within the infrared maping. Their map together was perfect, from the last wire to the gum stuck under tables. [break][break]
"Upstairs?" The room was devoid of most surrounding cabling and seemed to exist as a consequence of the rooms around it. It was a blank space in an otherwise complete map, and despite the building wiring running around and by it, a single truck on power ran to it, separate and isolated from the rest. [break][break]
The more they looked, the more rage seeped into their headspace. Like a leaky faucet, emotions dripped from Miroru as her intention was clear. She was going to destroy these people for what they were doing. Thea smiled at the realization of a shared sentiment. Already, a part of her mind was concocting what sort of hell to put Greymourn through. If she could, she'd give him a taste of what he'd done to so many people and make him the star of his own show. She hadn't yet decided if that meant through memories or with whatever foul equipment lay upstairs.[break][break]
A sliver of her sentiment was allowed to slip through. Not so much as to say her intentions in full, but enough so that Mimi would know she was not alone in her anger. "They won't get away with this. But we can't get them out here." [break][break]
Thea let go of the redhead's hand. Slow and awkwardly as she fought both the instinct to feed and the desire to remain close. "Let's get in there." She said, opening the door for Miroru and politely gesturing for her to go in first.[break][break]

The squeeze helped to ground Miroru in the moment, and things clarified. Her mind was still buzzing- it always was, with thoughts and music and plans and that ever-present, nagging hiss of the background radiation of the universe at large. The map she'd concocted with Thea had materialized from out of that hiss, born of Miroru's experience in feeling out the blank patches in it to track out objects and entities nearby.
One thought kept flickering, though. Even when coaxed to focus. Thea herself. Not a distraction, but a constant consideration. Even in the flickering moments considering how she'd bring down the hammer of real justice on someone buying his way out of its reach, every barnstorming fantasy started with the same thoughts.
Mark threats. Kill the guns. Minimize risk to Thea.
Notably absent, though?
Much thought at all about minimizing risk to HERSELF.
"Upstairs." Mimi confirmed, slipping more fully back into her own head as Thea excused herself from the headspace. She couldn't stop the smile, though, as Thea held the door, touching her shoulder in passing and smiling from a faintly canted head. "Thanks. We got this." She stepped in and her ears flicked, pantomiming her thoughts as she blitzed out the tracks to the room upstairs, prioritizing populated areas and straight lines to minimize exposure and travel time all at once before leading Thea upwards towards their destination.
The art enjoyment would have to wait for another time.
I can pay no price too great for justice.

[nospaces] [attr="class","skullhover"] [attr="class","skullimg"] [attr="class","skulltitle"]間違い [attr="class","skulloverlap"]How do we forgive ourselves for all the things we did not become? [attr="class","skullbody"]Thea's mind was like a razor, focused entirely on the task at hand. It's not that the mentat didn't suffer from stray thoughts or distractions. It was simply the fact that she could keep them in line through other more dedicated trains of thought, which she isolated from her main consciousness. As she let go of Mimi's hand, she noticed not the particulars of thought but the lack of any sense of self-preservation. [break][break] She wanted to say something, but despite hypocrisy being her favorite pastime, she opted not to. What good was it for her to say, "Don't trade your health for power," when she did the very same thing? Visible scars of the body and invisible ones of the mind. She hated how similar they were despite being so different. [break][break] The thought was relegated to its own train of thought and moved back to where she couldn't hear it anymore. There was work to be done. [break][break] Civilians were the first order of business. Whether it was her hero training or the fact that she didn't want any witnesses for what was undoubtedly going to become an act of vigilante justice was anyone's guess. In either case, Thea wanted them gone. [break][break] As she followed the prism hero through the art filled halls, the mentat would frequently call for her to stop, trading time for the chance to get people out. Any staff she saw was grabbed by the wrist unceremoniously. Their minds filled with the command to get people out quickly. It was wonderous what the belief that there was a gas leak could do to motivate someone. [break][break] As they traveled upwards on the last staircase before their destination, Thea pulled two reams of cloth from her bag. They were black but clearly well worked with patchwork covering bullet holes and knife cuts. She removed her gloves and then proceeded to wrap them around her hands and forearms in the practiced manner of a boxer. She lacked Mimi's raw power, but the mentat wasn't without her own tricks.[break][break] The pair stopped at the top of the stairs. Beyond this door was presumably a whole floor Greymourn dedicated to himself. Hidden on it, a forgotten room where the devil played with life. [break][break] Thea put a hand on the redhead's back right between the shoulder blades. She didn't need words or her quirk to communicate. The gesture was enough. [break][break] "Don't over do it." The bullet holes and knife cuts didn't go unnoticed. Miroru's hand snapped onto Thea's wrist- gently but insistently- at the sight of them, hand laced over the fabric itself, then her eyes sought Thea's, clearly worried.
But that was for another time. She squeezed, gently. Released. Moved on, shedding her zip-up hoodie and tying it around her waist. She still had a long-sleeved tee with elastic wrists on beneath a thrifted band tee for some cutesy idol heavy metal band. They were wearing fox masks, which explained why she'd snagged it.
Miroru pulled a bobby pin from her pocket and knelt outside the door, reaching for a power socket. "No promises." One jab, and the lights in the museum cut out- outside the private wing...
Except for the lightning storm writhing around the fox's left hand.
With her right, Miroru held out a finger as a thin ribbon of black extended from her fingertip, a gentle breeze ruffling the hallway as the thin rail of intense heat ignited the oxygen inside its space, the hidden flame devouring more air to burn hotter and hotter as its light was entirely recycled into itself. In a tiny moment, Miroru had herself a plasma cutter, and two quick movements slagged the latch and lock, leaving Miroru to release the plasma into a dot of black light over her head as she threw the door open and strode into the hallway, muttering positions for Thea as they moved. "Two, left door. One, right door. Two, second right."
I can pay no price too great for justice.
