he pipeworks running along the many warehouses that comprised Grounds Gamma became a familiar sight, yet remained ever impressive. It was an infinite labyrinth of concrete and reflective metal that looped together every which way and webbed across the grounds. And UAU staff had to build and rebuild it day after day after day. The sort of investment grounds Beta & Gamma required remained a mystery.

Fortunately, such questions didn't really concern Farrin. He couldn't begin to comprehend how it all worked, but it wasn't really his problem. He could respect the nebulous work, but he couldn't understand it - and that wasn't his job. His job, during this extracurricular hero simulation he and his fellow hero department students were highly encouraged to sign up for, was to navigate the labyrinth to locate a simulated bomb, take out the guards tucking it away, and disarm the thing before the timer splayed out on the scoreboard in the distance ran out. He wasn't expected to navigate this maze alone, though. His partner, a student he had met once already, Emilia Hall, was to work with him.

Farrin arrived a few minutes early, warming up on his own until his partner arrived. They still had a few minutes before the buzzer signaled the start of the simulation. Hopefully, Emilia would arrive soon so they could come up with a strategy. In the meantime, the time-turner defaulted to shadowboxing. It was his usual pass time when left to his own devices. His priorities usually looked like Sada > training > sleep. So, training it was. He have a rough idea of what Emilia was capable of after their encounter in one of UAU's other training facilities. Now it was time to see her in action.

Finally a normal exercise! Emi was feeling pumped this time around instead of her usual anxiety. It helped that she actually knew the person she was going to be working with and Farrin had been extremely helpful at the other training grounds. Unfortunately, she would soon realize that it was partially due to her own anxiety that she was always on time as she had overslept.

Rushing over to Ground Gamma she was just barely able to change into her gym clothes and looked extremely disheveled, not even having her hair in her usual ponytail in order to make it on time. Unlike the other exercises, she had a full briefing ahead of time as to what they'd be doing that day. It was a bomb retrieval mission with direct opposition to boot! She actually felt rather confident in this as the drills she had run with her dad were exactly suited for this kind of work. Plus it was helpful that she was starting to really learn the ins and outs of her quirk.

She recognized Farrin from afar and quickly sprinted up to him "Sorry I'm late!" she wasn't but to her, she might as well have been, placing her hands on her knees to support herself while she caught her breath. She would take her hair tie out of her pocket and fix her hair quickly also taking the opportunity to brush out some wrinkles on her pants "Oh I meant to thank you for your help the other day! Between the advice you and Jun-senpai gave me, I was able to make some progress!"

arrin bobbed to right, then thrust his left fist forward, showing the invisible enemy of his imagining who was boss. In his eyes, some thug's jaw was on the receiving end of a nasty jab. A normal man would have lost some teeth, but this was Farrin's imagination and in his imagination, even lowly thugs were packing some power. He dipped right again, then swiveled left. Jab, jab, hard cross-shot, uppercut! And then... he cut the combo short at hearing Emilia's voice. Not a scratch of embarrassment marked him. Anyone who had encountered the time-turner at this point knew he was almost always training anyway. 

He dug in his pocket for the family heirloom, a golden pocket watch with an emerald encrusted at the center of its casing, then thumbed it open. "No worries, lass. Yer right on time actually," he responded, shutting the watch closed and shoving it back in his pocket. Dangerous as these exercises could be, Farrin didn't' go anywhere without his pocket watch. 

He hopped in place a few, rolling his neck, limbering up for the simulation they were about to run. "N' dun' mention it. It was all you, really." She seemed the sort to attribute too much of her own success to others. Pride, in controlled quantities, was a good thing. Let it get the best of you and it could cost your life, but the right amount made heroes into Hercules - not to be confused with Herculean, the American hero he had mentioned last time they met.

"Yuh said last time yer quirk makes yuh' tough n' strong," some of which he saw firsthand, "so I suppose it's only right I detail mine, especially given the circumstances." They only had another minute or so before the starting bell rang. "Basically, I can speed things up or slow 'em down. If yuh' keep close, I can speed you up too, which I think might make fer a decent openin' strategy, but after that, we might need ta split up. The exercise will be timed n' Ground Gamma is rather sizable. Thoughts?" They didn't have long, but running in without any sort of strategy was liable to cost them the entire simulation. Something basic was better than nothing and would have to do.

A smile returned to her face once she was told she wasn't late after all. UAU was filled with such nice people and Farrin was no exception! "Oh thank goodness!" she was always self-conscious about stuff like this as it's the exact kind of stuff her dad cared about more than anything, military and timeliness went hand in hand after all.

She would follow Farrin's example and begin to stretch in preparation. She didn't have any formal training in how to fight just the basics one would expect for any average person. She mainly relied on her extra toughness and physical strength to overpower her opponent which was looking to be less and less effective in a school of this caliber. She'd already seen some incredible things at this point and she desperately needed to get stronger to make sure she didn't fall behind.

"Tough and Strong, yup!" she nodded along as she listened to Farrin's explanation of his own quirk. Speeding up and slowing things down seemed extremely useful in almost any circumstance especially when he further explained that he could do the same thing for her. "Wow that's really impressive" she genuinely meant every word she said "That would be helpful cause I can't run that fast but I can actually jump pretty high and slow my fall" Ground Gamma was pretty dense with large pipes and machinery everywhere so Emi figured if she could get a birds-eye view that would be helpful. There were about 30 seconds left before they would start and it suddenly dawned on her that if they split they would need some way to communicate "How are we going to let each other know we've found them once we split?"

t was a valid question, but Farrin had run a similar simulation before. The odds of two bomb threats being exactly the same were slim to nil, but there were some crossover strategies that remained applicable. There were no civilian actors or bots in play as far as he knew, which meant they could afford a little collateral damage. Too much would be risking a lower grade, but it would be worth it to arm Emilia up with a way to signal him. 

"So, I use me' quirk via these nearly translucent, emerald fields. If I find the bomb n' its guards first, I'll summon one big enough ta' see up in the air n' keep it there fer a few minutes. Keep an eye on the sky. You, on the other hand, should probably tear up some o' the pipes or somethin' similar, n' throw it as high as possible, just not directly up if yer' physically near the bomb. It'll cause some damage, but even if I somehow dun' see it from wherever I am, odds are I'll hear it."

Normally, most heroes had communicators with which they could be put into contact with one another, their agencies, or the Hero Association. Considering the students lacked such devices for the simulation, they had to come up with something. Maybe it wasn't the most subtle method of communication, but it would get the job done. Probably. 

With their thirty seconds up, the bell rang.

"This is gonna feel weird. Try ta' think slow. Yuh'll understand in a moment."

With that, Farrin immediately threw a field over each of them. While he had long grown accustomed to temporal acceleration, to Emilia it would feel something like an adrenaline shot, an electrical charge that slowed the world around her down.

"Let's head as close ta' the center as we can, then split up!" He started once it was clear she was okay. 

Farrin would lead the way, darting further, deeper into the warehouse district and pipe works. Eventually, when they made enough progress, he would veer left. "You take the right, the field won't last too much longer as we move further apart, so be careful!"

Farrin was pretty dang smart! His idea for keeping in contact was grounded and made perfect sense to her. She had already appreciated him and his advice from their previous run in but this just made her positive opinion of him to grow even more. "That sounds like something I can do!" being around him already made her feel more confident.

As he activated his quirk she felt like an electrical charge was running through her body, resulting in a bit of a head rush. Stumbling for a moment, she would quickly regain her senses, and she was able to adapt to the feeling "You weren't kidding about that!" she would utter, stabilizing herself further as she activated her own quirk, a small aura surrounding her as her physical attributes increased. She would run alongside Farrin as they started crouching as the field around her dissipated and pushed off the ground, soaring through the air in the right direction at impressive speeds. This was much faster than she could usually go, and the combination of her strength and the speed boost she was given. Slowing her descent she would land on a pipe and crouch, peering over to see robot guards on patrol in the area. She would wait until they passed and then drop down behind them heading in the direction they were coming from. Perhaps a distraction and Farrin was headed in the right direction? Only time would tell.

arrin didn't need to see a target to maintain his fields, but it sure helped. Proximity too made it easier for him to sense what was happening within those fields. With Emi out of sight, and the distance between them growing, he would allow the field to drop. It was dangerous keeping personally tailored fields like that up under the previously mentioned conditions. If he misshaped the field, only speeding part of her up but not the other, chronokinesis could wreak havoc on her innards. Blood rushing through the veins at an accelerated pace only to crash back to normal speeds in other parts of the body would result in something akin to excessive blood clotting. Until they met up again, she would have to get by with her own quirk. 

Determination and discipline wired Farrin's every move. He knelt low, almost into a ball, then leaped up onto a nearby pipe. He pulled himself up, climbing higher and higher up the side of a warehouse until he reached the top of the building. The vantage point offered him a view across quite a distance. More warehouses, more pipes, but between some of the latticework pipes he saw them. A cluster of villain bots. They weren't like the Victory, Venator, and other bots from many of the entrance exams. These ones were in human shape. 

Farrin took a few steps back. Breathed in slowly, then exhaled even slower. In a blur, he charged to the edge of the roof and lunged over onto an adjacent building. He crashed into a roll, an armored boot dragging along the ground and slowing his momentum. He shot up a moment later and sprinted to the roof's edge. He was just above the bots now. Until he confirmed the bomb's presence, he would trail them. There was no sense in giving away his position until he knew for sure where the bomb was.

Even with her extra weight gain from her quirk the pipes she was positioned on held without fail. She couldn't help but be impressed with how well designed this course was but then again they needed to compensate for all the different students whether they be large or small. As the robot guards passed she would jump off the pipe and slow her descent to a land lightly before she would deactivate her quirk. She couldn't sneak around with all the extra weight and until she found the bomb she would need to take the stealth approach.

'I hope Farrin is okay' she thought to herself knowing that he was more capable than she was in a fight but she still worried about him. She was generally more concerned about others than herself and with the boost he gave her earlier she just hoped it didn't wear him down too much. After all whenever she used her quirk too much she would end up feeling fatigued. Not a great thing to happen during a test.

arrin followed the bots from above. More sophisticated machines might have been equipped with motion sensors of some sort and detected his movement, but the realistic reactions of the villain bots actually spoke to the quality of the simulation. They were designed to act like typical human thugs. Their awareness fit the profile perfectly. 

Overconfidence was, however, always one of Farrin's weaknesses. The time-turner knew he was advanced, even among his peers at UAU. He had faced Leonid in a one-on-one spar his very first week of classes and almost toppled the beast. A few years of Hero Prep and training with the heroes at Above & Beyond agency left him more capable than many of his classmates. Couple that training with a killer quirk in chronokinesis and, despite his typical discipline, even he slipped up.

A pop rang across the rooftop. There was no temporal warning this time around. Another weakness of his. He had become a little too reliant on time warning him of incoming danger. This time it hadn't. Heat shot up his back as a stun round slapped into his upper hip. Then, numbness followed. Accompanying the second shot was a flare at the back of his brain. Now time was stepping in. 

Farrin lunged rightward into a roll, then sprung up onto his feet. Two robots on the building across from him. They were starting to send patrols up onto the building tops. The bots below undoubtedly heard the fire. Word was about to get out. His position would be compromised. Sprinting across the roof, Farrin leaped into the air, and crashed straight into one of the bots before it could react. To him, the world was still crawling. 

Farrin threw his elbow into the down bot's arm, then its head, disabling it. Again, they were built to simulate human targets. He would have just rendered the thug unconscious. One more bot to go, then he had to move. Stealth was no longer an option. They had to find the bomb asap.

Emi honestly wasn't sure how or when to act. She had managed to evade detection but there were a lot of unknowns and choices she could make from this point. Did she stay above? Drop down? Attack? Retreat? She was feeling a little dizzy and wished they hadn't split up. More than anything, she could use some guidance and even though Farrin was the same age as her he was endlessly more competent. "This...is frustrating," she said slightly under her breath, experiencing a new feeling that had never come up during her stay at UAU. She was frustrated at her weakness.

This frustration turned to an impulse she stood up and jumped down landing hard behind the guards. Given her body composition, she didn't receive any damage and instead would put into practice what she had learned all this time by striking out with a straight punch crumping one of the robots before charging into the other one, hands crossed to protect her face as she crushed this one as well. Whatever she was going to do now would need to be done fast as she looked around the area for a minute before her eyes would spot the bomb...guarded by 10 robots. Even if she could take them out herself this was a joint exercise. So she would move back into a clear space and rip out two pipes, one large and one small. First, she would pitch the larger one into the air as hard as she could and then would throw the smaller one AT the large one, the sound of metal clashing reverberating throughout the area. If Farrin was in earshot it would be clear that THIS was the signal he was waiting on.

arrin immediately dove forward, tackling the second rooftop bot. He lifted the machine up into the air, then dropped it back in something of a suplex. A swift kick to its jaw put the bot out. Had it been a living, breathing person, one without some durability quirk, it would have lost a few teeth. The two bots were armed, though, and partaking in terrorist actions, so he was still a far cry away from the line of excessive force. 

With the two bots down, Farrin looked to his hip. Raising his shirt, he was met with a black and blue patch of skin. Bruised. Numb. Not broken. He could still move, albeit there would be a slight hobble on his left side. The bots below were undoubtedly closing on his position, but things were quiet for the moment, at least. 

That was until something of a gong rang partway across the city. Farrin turned to the sound, watching as the rods, or whatever they were, fell in the distance. Message received. The time-turning student started his hobble and broke into an odd sprint, then leaped over the edge of the building. He practiced the little maneuver he was working on with Miroru, using an acceleration field just below his boot as he kicked to sort of air-step his way down from the rooftop. He was more slowing himself than flying or anything of the like, but it kept him from crashing hard against the ground. 

Instead, the lad landed on his feet, the rooftop access door above slamming open. He had just avoided the bots that were converging on him. A moment later, he blazed down the street and into the distance. He didn't have a precise location, but in his eyes, the pipes were still falling. That narrowed the target area down. In all of a minute or so, he would be near Emi's position.

Her physical conditioning may not have been the best but Emi could at least hold her own in a fight like this. She figured if one of them needed to take on the brunt of the assault, it would be here. From what she could remember Farring was skilled just not as durable as she was given the effects on punching a rock during the ultimate training. Besides, if he could speed himself up, all she had to do was hold out until then.

The hurried footsteps of the robot guards was worrying so she opted to pick up some spare metal and place it in front of her as a makeshift cover. Once the guards arrived, they would open fire with their "guns" which in reality were peashooters that were nonlethal but had a byproduct of being electrified. A stray hit her skin and she winced, the shocks traveling through her body. Taking another piece of steel she would compress it the best she could and then blindfire into the group of guards. Either way she wasn't too great at coming up with a plan just yet and figured that assuming Farrin could get here as quickly as he implied she wouldn't have to as the guards kept shooting, advancing on her position slowly.

he winds parted before the time-turner, a gust blown about in his wake. Farrin's hip was recovering from the earlier stun round he had taken. His body's natural healing, even accelerated by chronokinesis, wasn't much benefit in the middle of scrap, but against low-voltage, non-lethals, well, the numbness was worked out of his body fairly fast. So, it wasn't long before the student could pull a full-on sprint.

The debris fell from the air, out of sight now, but weapons fire was a navigational tool, too. Farrin zipped down one street, then up another, and with one final turn, found the scene of Emi's defiance. She held under a barrage of stun rounds. In those old video game terms, she was holding their aggro, which left all the bots open to Farrin's attack! 

He was a bolt across the distance, a flash followed by tattered metal and broken parts. Farrin wasn't the sturdiest of his cohort, but he hit like a cannon, and he knew it. A hard clothesline toppled the first machine, and with a spin, he delivered a roundhouse kick that launched the second bot into a third. 

"Nice job, lass! Yuh alright?" He asked, raising his wrist to a fourth machine. 

A stun round of his own fired from the linear cannon Kei had built into his gloves. It slapped into the bot and knocked it hard against the wall. Unlike the bots, Farrin could increase or decrease his rounds' velocity as needed. The gear was very tightly tied to his quirk. 

"I can take the lead if yuh' need time ta' recover!" He shouted back, still uncertain of her condition behind her makeshift shield. She had been standing, when he arrived, but under the protection of some jutting metal she had clearly planted for cover. Did that mean she injured? First he would assess, then they would make for the bomb.

Emi was doing her best to keep the robots at bay, throwing anything she had within arms reach in their direction. She couldn't exactly see how effective this way as exposing her head was the quickest way to get shot, and while close-range shots from their weapons would hurt, she didn't have any other option.

That was until she heard fists hitting metal as the suppressing fire on her end slowed down until it finally stopped altogether. She would cautiously peek around the metal she had placed and sighed in relief. "I'm fine! I just don't have anything I can do to deal with things like this" she would point to the scattered scrap metal she threw. "Except for that!" she added sheepishly, slightly embarrassed at her lack of technique. Perhaps she could get some gear similar to what Farrin had? After all, Freja had managed to get a new bat from an upperclassman.

That was neither here nor there! She would stand up and brush herself off. "I'm good! This metal is pretty sturdy. Let's go finish this!" she would follow Farrin's lead as she truly trusted his judgment here. Whatever he did before coming to UAU turned him into someone really dependable!

arrin nodded, eyeing their surroundings. Yeah, before Kei had built the linear cannons, Farrin's only option was to close the distance between himself and his enemies. Time-turning made that significantly easier, but there were flying enemies to consider. Potential teleportation quirks, too. And, however doubtful, the possibility of someone even faster than himself. 

"Well, it worked. Kept yuh' in one piece n' without any injury. I'd say it did the job." 

Farrin turned to the sound of clatter metal. Further down the long corridor, the remaining villain bots assembled. They weren't aiming yet, but it wouldn't be long. If that's where Emi saw the bomb, now was the time to make their move. Artillery in the form of Emi's throwing arm would be nice, but they couldn't risk damaging the bomb. In a real-world scenario, that might make the explosive impossible to disarm. All they had to do in the simulation was pull a few wires, but the clock was counting down. Still, time was Farrin's ally and a powerful ally it was. 

"I'm gonna rush in n' try ta' hold their attention, then you charge in n' bring the hammer down on any I dun' pick off. While I'm runnin' circles 'round 'em, you pull the plug on the bomb. Sound good?" 

Assuming Emi was on board with the plan, Farrin would dart ahead. The street was mostly barren, with only minimal cover. A death sentence for most, but Farrin perceived the world faster than others and reacted faster in kind. It all seemed so slow in his eyes. So, he burst down the block, dodging the stun rounds, and the villain bots opened fire. His wrists rose, firing stun rounds of his own from the linear cannons in his gloves. Two machines were knocked out of the fight before he reached the square that housed the bomb. 

When the distance was crossed, Farrin went to work. His fists flew, and bots were broken. The arms and legs of would-be criminals were snapped. Like the others he had faced, they would live if they were human, but they would be hurting for quite a while. The time-turner ran circles in the square, doing his best to hold the bots' attention and clear the path for Emi.
