"It means fearless."

The string of disappearances over the last couple of weeks was constantly kept at the forefront of Kano's mind. People, more specifically those possessing Mutant-type Quirks or appearances resembling that of beings other than human, had been going missing. It'd only become a big issue to the police once a wealthy politician's child was among those who disappeared, and it was only then that they came to Monarch for assistance. Daimao probably would have beaten the officer whose decision it was to wait that long. Or at the very least gave them a very, very, intimidating stare down before taking on the case.

Because of the lack of effort on their side, Kano would need to start from essentially square one. Visiting the places where they disappeared. Requesting surveillance footage from the areas. Patrolling the locales to see if he was able to catch a glimpse of anything. He'd gotten lucky the other night, encountering one of the more loudmouthed street thugs bragging about a potential job offer. It only taken Kano dangling him from the top of a building to get some answers; he was supposed to be provide some kind of security to a recent smuggling operation in town, though he was to early in the vetting process to know more.

His second break came two nights later, when he intercepted what he thought was an attempted kidnapping. Turns out, it was actually an escape. The victim, a young man with four arms, had been getting chased by several armed individuals. He was heavily bruised and injured, and his pursuers would have gotten just as bad had they not fled. The only thing he could say before he lost consciousness was that he'd been kidnapped and held with others, though the where, why, and how were fragmented at best.

He was now resting in police protective custody. Normally, having a witness with hazy memories on a case with so few leads would cause it to go cold. Normally. But Monarch didn't teach its heroes to give up so easily. And with Daimao in retirement, that left Kano to keep up that model. Luckily, he knew someone that could help; one of his fellow teachers at U.A., Browning, had a Quirk that let him read memories, or something of the sort. He contacted him expecting the man to be of some kind of help.

He was hopeful.

Kidnapping cases weren't as frequent here as they were back home. Mark always wondered why that was the case. Maybe because there were taboos that the rich and powerful didn't dabble in? Or maybe home lives weren't as awful and divorce rates were not as severe, causing one parent or another not to jump ship with the kid. Or maybe there weren't as many deranged stalkers that kidnapped women. But that was all bullshit because the only different between Japan and home was the culture; human nature was still the same. Regardless, a coworker had reached out for help in regards to a case he was working on. It felt weird, having a coworker. Mark always had a liaison of sorts when working with the police or a point of contact with an actual hero agency, but a coworker? Gross. Made him feel icky...that and it threw off the Lone Wolf vibe.

But a job was a job, so he showed up to the station. The hero in question, Dauntless, was someone that Mark wasn't too familiar with. There might have been a story he read about back home regarding an exploit, but he couldn't remember. It didn't matter, either, as he signed in and began to walk towards the back, finally spotting the man. <"So, should we have some chit chat before we get started, or do you wanna jump straight into it?"> Mark fired off in English first, Midwestern accent present and his hat missing with a smile on his face. His hands in his pockets to the chagrin of the officers around him. He didn't look much like a hero, looking more like he walked in from a long road trip than anything else. But he was willing to see what he could do.

"It means fearless."

Having been talking with an officer upon the man of the hours arrival, Kano raised a curious eyebrow upon hearing the flawless English sprinkled with a familiar if somewhat off accent of the States. It only took a half second for his mind to connect the dots, and for an appreciative smile to appear on his face by the time he'd fully turned to meet his peer. <"Thanks for coming so quickly, Lonewolf. We can talk and walk on the way."> His own English is was tinged with a bit more Southern inclinations, a inheritance from his mother, who'd grown up in the American south. Turning back towards the officer, Kano commented something in Japanese, before the officer nodded left the two.

<"C'mon."> He gestured for him to follow and began walking deeper into station. <"I'll admit, the case will probably go cold if we can't get any information from the kid. So far, the leads all points towards some kind of trafficking operation for Mutant-type Quirks. The kid was one of the most recent ones taken, but he managed to get away. Interrupted the kidnappers during one of my patrols while they were trying to recover him, and they got away."> They approached an elevator, which would take them to one of the upper floors of the station, as well as the residence when the victim had been staying for the last couple of days under guard.

<"He says his memories get cloudy and disconnected whenever he tries to recall the past week, so I'm thinking maybe some kind of mind-altering Quirk might be in play. Heard you dealt with that kind of thing. What do you think?">

As Demura began to brief him he'd let himself get into the work mindset. Or at least as close as possible; he'd find it hard not being able to not let his sarcasm or other witty remarks stay bottled up during this particular case. <"Well, if it's a mind altering quirk then this might be harder than you think,"> he says, walking along and glancing around the hallways as they moved towards the holding room. <"If he's been locked up in someone's basement for more than a week then determining how they're kidnapping kids will be hard. Full disclosure, I can only see somewhere in the ballpark of the last three days.">

He'd look over at his associate, raising an eyebrow. <"How long ago was he brought in? And how many kidnappers did you run into?"> A pause, before tacking on: <"Right, and mind if I get a copy of the report? Something I can skim over? Depending on what I can get or not, might have to resort to conventional means. If there's some kind of blocker in place details might be few and far between.">

"It means fearless."

<"Lucky I called you when I did then. Been a little less than forty-eight hours since they've been brought in. Their parent has been making a fuss, but we've been able to convince them this is the safest space in case the kidnappers make a round trip."> A part of Kano knew this wouldn't be so open and shut once Lonewolf came. And another part really hoped it had been. A convenience of having a Quirk to read a mind exactly, to cut through the fluff and get right to the heart of the matter. Then it'd be as simple as setting up a sting and busting the operation. He could count on one hand the number of times it'd went like that, with some variance. But having his colleague here and now was better than not. So they'd get to work.

He pulled out his phone, unlocking its screen and swiping upwards on it, tapping several times as he did. Lonewolf would get a notification on his own device shortly after. <"Sent the details over to you. Not a basement. This isn't some isolated group snatching people. It's an organized network. What little they've mentioned, they were held in something like a steel box with others. Like I said, his mind is hazy. Blockers is just a working theory.">

The report would confer much of the same. Hiroshi Li. Son of a civilian city council member. Went missing about a week prior. No leads from police. Found and recovered by Dauntless two nights ago, in a disheveled and injured state. Placed in protective custody.

<"There were four of them that I saw. Weren't really your bottom of the barrel fools. Were after him in a markless vehicle, and fled as soon as they caught sight of me. Don't know if it was from recognition, or just weighing the cost benefit.">

Mark would immediately, once the information was sent to his phone, pull it out and begin to skim over the information. As much as he hated them, kidnapping cases were his specialty, but this was on a level he couldn't properly fathom. Not because his mind couldn't go there, but because the worst thing he had encountered was a cult that was attempting to forcibly indoctrinate people into it. <"Guess it'll depend on what I find then,"> He says, frowning as he skimmed harder. <"A lot that I've dealt with in my time as a hero have been stalkers, creeps, and a few other things I'd rather not get into. Take me to the kid, the faster I start sifting through his head the better.">

He'd pull the duffle he had around him to his side, beginning to pull out a camera then deciding against it, going for an audio recorder instead. <"Think the cops or the parents will allow a taped interview? It's possible the kid's just traumatized, but if there's blockers like you say there is then having some kind of visual to help me focus my notes later will be useful.">
