[attr="class","ZenkaiExposition"]Zenkai groaned as he kicked down the door in front of him "AYE YO, ANYONE IN HERE!? CALL OUT!" The fire was raging through the top floors of the building and time was of the essence if they wanted to save anyone from the raging inferno. Zenkai took it upon himself to evacuate the top floors while Freja would be in charge of the bottom ones and making sure Zen's exit stayed fire free. It was a complete shit show and one that neither of them were fully equipped for but like the heroes they were supposed to be training to be, they had to do something about it.

Zen and Freja had been spending a nice afternoon at a cafe, eating croissants and drinking milk tea. They were in the middle of planning drinks at Freja's dorm when the fire broke out in the building across the street. In most cases Zenkai would be reluctant to help out or do any kind of work but there was something about the fire that made him desperate to save people. He didn't fully understand why his legs moved by themselves or why he shouted at Freja to get the people out of the bottom floors but something in the back of his mind told him that he needed to save everyone or something bad would happen.

So, at a full sprint Zenkai crashed through the front door of the apartment building and made his way to the top of floor before kicking down a door and finding himself in the situation he was in. The voice of one person came to the golden boi's ears as they cried out for help in the back room. It didn't take much time for Zen to kick down the door and grab the elderly woman before bringing her to safety. The fire hadn't started in her apartment nor had it reached it yet so there was only the smoke that he had to deal with.

Once the lady was safely at the stairs Zenkai kicked down another door, this one with more smoke behind it and charged into the Fray

Were Zen and her just magnets for trouble? It felt like no matter where they went together, as soon as they left campus to go explore Tokyo, or go on patrol, things would almost always go south around them immediately, or if not immediately, imminently. The raging inferno around her was reminding her of a certain incident, Freja's body moving not out of obligation or the need to save people, but out of sheer terror. ''I hear you!! I hear you!'' She called to someone behind a closed door as she tried to force it open with shoulder pushes. Unfortunately, she simply didn't have the frame or strength for it. Not the way that Elias might have.

She would have shed tears of frustration then and there if the unyielding fire hadn't been so dominating. Taking out her bat, she began to whack at the door, knowing she didn't have much time before the metal would heat up and become too hot to hold. ''Stand back! I'm getting you out of there!'' Her arms felt heavy with each hit, but eventually the door gave way as she created a hole big enough to stick her arm through. ''I got you, I'm here!'' She ran up to embrace and scoop up a child, before pivoting and sprinting back out towards the main door.

Emerging back outside was like climbing out of hell as the fresh air filled her lungs. She would let herself collapse then and there if Zenkai wasn't still fighting to save people. With dread and fear in her veins, she rushed back in against her will.

[attr="class","ZenkaiExposition"]Zenkai watched as Freja jumped back into the Fray even with the terrified look plastered on her face. Man, that girl was certainly a hero, even being as afraid as she was she was still willing to jump into a burning building to try and save people. It was inspiring and if Zen hadn't already jumped in first he would have most certainly followed her into the inferno. Unlike with the villain they last faced they weren't as worried about their partner getting immediately killed. Sure, fire and smoke inhalation was deadly but Freja was smart and would be able to keep herself and others alive, plus if she needed any help he was only a shout away…If she could shout while coughing that is.

As he entered the apartment Zenkai was greeted to a blazing inferno right smack dab in the middle of the living room with at least two screaming voices behind a door at the other end of the apartment. Zenkai didn't stop to think about the consequences before rushing head first into into the fire, launching himself through the blaze to the other side of the apartment. He felt the heat burn his skin as he launched himself, causing blisters on his arms and legs. Luckily his clothes didn't catch fire and he'd be able to continue this rescue without being fully nude.

Not wasting a single second the titan barreled through the door, looking down at the mother holding her small child. "Not going to lie, this is going to get a little scary" Zen admitted before scooping up the pair in his arms before dashing towards the window and jumping out of it.

The golden boi plummeted several stories to the ground below, cracking the concrete with his weight as he landed. Zenkai let out a small groan as pain seared up his legs. He shouldn't have landed like that and now he way paying for it. Still, he got them to safety and thats all that was needed.

Running back inside the building the monkey king called out for Freja "Oi, I need your help upstairs! No fucking way am I going to get into every apartment and save everyone at the rate this fire is spreading"

Every breath she took inside the house felt like it was burning up her lungs, each step growing heavier and heavier as she pushed herself to keep going. It felt as if the smog began to envelop her, taking her mind back to that day, back to the day she died. Stumbling in her daze, it wasn't until Zenkai called out that she snapped out of it. She didn't shout back, but she sure as hell ran towards the voice.

If it was needed, Freja would break down more doors with her bat to get to any civilians that might be huddling and fighting for dear life. With each swing the metal grew hotter and she could feel it burning her hands. Still, she refused to let go. To her, the bat was like her quirk, it was the only way she could feel safe and trust herself to be strong. Without it she was nothing. ''This way miss, can you run?'' She finished helping a woman downstairs, pointing at exit. ''J-Just out there.. Run ahead I'll be right behind you.'' Another wave of relief washed over her, knowing more people made it out okay. It wasn't until she turned around and was about to head further into the house that her blood, somehow, ran completely cold. In the shadows of the fire there was a silhouette, dancing, freely, elegantly with the smoke itself. It was the villain that had killed Freja and Elias in the fire that day. The villain wasn't here now, but to Freja it felt as real as the smoke-filled air she breathed. The pain from the heating metal bat finally caught up to her as she dropped it, her hands horribly burnt as she stumbled backwards and began screaming, watching the smoke and fire in a primal, paralyzed horror she hadn't felt in a very long time.

[attr="class","ZenkaiExposition"]Zenkai looked back at Freja as she followed him upstairs. She seemed tired, stressed and in a lot of pain. He couldn't imagine how hot that bat was by now but she still refused to put it down, she was a fucking champ in Zen in Zen's opinion. No quirk, no protective clothing and yet she was still doing her fucking best to try and save people's lives. The world would be a better place if it was just filled with more people like Freja.

Zenkai kicked down the final door at the top of the apartment complex the one that seemingly started the fire and quickly greeted to the smell of burnt flesh. There were no screams coming from this apartment, no one left to save, maybe there was never a chance of saving them. Still, the titan couldn't help but feel a tinge of regret not coming through this door first. If he had, would he have been able to save whoever was inside? He'd probably find out after the firefighters arrived. For now, he had to make sure everyone else got out alive and that included Freja.

Freja's screams reached him before he even saw her which made the mountain of a pain bolt towards her direction. Had she gotten burnt? Did she find another body? Neither of those seemed to be the answer as he finally approached her, watching her scream into the fire in front of her with her bat at her side. She seemed absolutely terrified of something within the fire, something he couldn't see. Shit...that definitely wasn't good.

"Freja! I know it's scary but you're a hero, pull yourself together!" Zenkai shouted as he grabbed ahold of Freja, there was no fucking way he was letting her die today. Just as he was turning around to get both of them out of there the second floor collapsed, right in front of their exit...

How could Zenkai even stand this heat? With the way the smoke was rising, she would think being that tall put them at a massive disadvantage. Even so it looked like they were handling themselves better than her, or maybe it was just her failing vision and spinning head that was playing her mind a trick. Zenkai was hurting too, but he kept pushing forward. What kind of a friend would she be if she didn't try to match that? Well, hopefully she wouldn't come to regret pushing herself like that.

Was Freja ready for a live fire rescue scenario? It was hard to say. She was brave when she needed to be and where her strength or speed couldn't carry her, she had a lot of heart. Unfortunately, what she didn't have was the means to overcome old trauma as ghosts from the past appeared in the smoke of the raging fire. As the pain caught up to her and her emotions overcame her, all Freja could do was scream out in terror, unable to process that Zenkai was even still in the building with her until he snapped her out of it. ''..Zen?'' She choked, holding onto them for dear life as they turned towards the door, only for fate to spit them right in the face as their only means of escape got obscured by the collapsing second floor. ''Are we going to die?'' There was no sadness in her voice. Only apathetic acceptance as she realized this was where her short second life was going to end.

[attr="class","ZenkaiExposition"]The titan's lungs burned as the fire raged around the two of them. He had been ignoring the smoke inhalation for the most part but it was starting to catch up to him. His skin, red and blistered from all of the heat, screamed for the relief of something cold to sooth it. Somewhere deep within Zenkai's mind they were beginning to regret sleeping through the fire rescue lessons. They were definitely in the worst possible situation they could be in, trapped inside a burning building with their one exit now completely blocked by burning wooden beams and for some reason, Zenkai was getting an odd sense of Deja vu

Freja's words knocked Zen out of his thoughts, both the words themselves and how absolutely devoid of hope they were. It was like she had already accepted that her fate was sealed, they were doomed to die. But they weren't, Zenkai wouldn't it happen. "There's only one person in the world who gets to tell me when I die, and that's me" There was no hint of cheerfulness, laziness, boredom, or anything of the usual Zenkai in their voice as they spoke. No, for once in his short life, Zenkai Hatake, was finally serious.

Zenkai removed his tank top before handing it to Freja "Cover your mouth with this and stay low, hopefully you won't inhale as much smoke" It was soaked in his sweat and was definitely 100% super gross but covering ones mouth with wet cloth was an easy way to help with the smoke inhalation. After depositing his shirt with his partner the titan stepped forward and grabbed the first burning wooden beam, growling in pain as it burned his arms and chest. Running on pure adrenaline the monkey king lifted the large structural object and swung it, clearing some of the mess away before throwing the beam through an apartment door.

After one beam, came another, than another until finally the path to their salvation was clear enough for Zenkai to grab Freja like a sack of potatoes and run the fuck out of the death trap they had gotten themselves into. At this point the front of his chest, arms and hands were pretty burnt and every move, breath and thought came with an overwhelming amount of pain. He wouldn't stop though, he couldn't stop, not until he made a fool out of fate itself.

Her new life had begun with a tragic end surrounded by fire. How sad was it that she was going to die by fire again? Not only had her uselessness again resulted in her own death, but the death of another too. Only this time it wasn't Freja, it was Zenkai who was holding her and desperately fighting for his life too. Her question was emotionless, but what came after carried a cascade of sad emotions as Freja choked up what she thought was going to be her last words. ''I'm sorry.''

She was resigned to her fate, but looked up at Zen when they responded the way they did. It was arguably still the same Zen standing here with her, but something had changed. Were they serious? Were they actually scared too? In their previous perilous situations together, they never appeared scared to Freja. That one mugging? It felt as if Zen was in control the entire time, hell, even when he was getting blasted by back to back lightning strikes the laidback giant wasn't budging.

Was it gross to accept his tank top and press it up to her face? 100%, but did Freja have time to think about that when the difference could mean life or death? Not really, all she could think about was the gesture of it. That Zen was concerned with her safety and had even offered it to begin with. Her hands screamed out in agony the entire time she held the tank top in place. Hopefully they weren't beyond recovery assuming they could make it out. Freja then proceeded to watch in horror as her partner put his own life and body at risk to get them both out of there. With every beam Zenkai picked up, she feared it might be his last. That even someone as strong and capable as him could meet their limit here, but somehow he kept going.

In a split second the path to the outside was cleared and before she could run herself he had already picked her up. Once they got outside Freja would roll onto the grass and remove the tank top from her face as she let out a hacking cough and tried to stabilize her breathing in the fresh air. Now that a fire team and ambulance had arrived, more people had gathered outside. ''T-Treat him, treat my friend, he's hurt.'' She pleaded, pushing back tears, her red, blistered hands silently trembling as she took deep breaths to try and tune out the pain. ''..I think... We got everyone..'' She felt another hacking cough coming on, so strong that she thought she might vomit. ''Are you okay, Zen?'' He had saved her life again. It was history repeating at this point, she was too weak, or out of her depth and once again, he had come to her rescue.

They had been serious when he had told Freja that they was the only person who got to decide if they lived or died. The titan had decided when he came to Japan that he would be in control of his on life and his own happiness and he would follow through on that promise to himself no matter what.

"I'm fine, I'm fine, check on her, she'll need it more" It was a lie, his entire body was screaming at him, his lungs were burning, his skin was burning and he couldn't get the smell of burnt flesh out of his nose, it was enough to make him vomit. Which he did. Wiping some of the blackish fluid from his mouth the titan shoved the EMT's off of him pointing to his partner "She needs it more, just look at her fucking hands" Zen ignored the fact that most of his chest and arms were covered in at least second degree burns at this point but he didn't care. Freja needed her hands to wield her bat, if she lost even some function of them it could risk her future as a hero.

The golden boi looked over at the small girl as the EMT's got to work wrapping her hands in wet gauze while another couple of Medical technicians tried to stop them from moving in vein. Zenkai lumbered over to Freja and used the last of his energy to cup her chin in his hand, forcing her to look up at him, his cold, sapphire-eyes piercing straight through her. "You are in control of your own life and your own happiness, NEVER let anyone else tell you different. If fate ever tries to prove you wrong, tell it to go fuck itself"

And then his world went black as he collapsed into unconsciousness.

''Like hell you're fine, idiot!'' She shouted back insisting that he be checked, but they were already over her with the wet gauze. ''Ow, ow, ow!'' She winced, closing her eyes as immense pain coursed through her body with the treatment. ''My hands are fine- OW!'' She could feel tears form in her eyes but she did her best to push them back. Now that she had actually lived through this ordeal she could officially say it, getting burned was so much worse than getting stabbed. Her breathing was heavy as she did her best to tune out the pain, think happy thoughts, anything that could get her the hell out of here and not feel the burns as bad.

It wasn't until she felt a hand on her chin that she opened her eyes again. ''..Zen?'' She looked straight into their eyes, their words pulling on her heartstrings. Zenkai probably didn't know it, but they were touching at something Freja had been struggling to do ever since the gender swap. This time, she couldn't hold the tears back as they started streaming down her chin. ''Zen? Zen!!'' She cried out as they fainted. They were going to be okay, right? As his eyes fluttered open he was greeted with the sight of bright lights and the smell of a sterile environment. Hospital, probably the same one he went to with Thea after they got shot. Yeah, that checked out, he would never had admitted it to Freja but saving both of their lives had taken quite a bit out of him. He wasn't used to having to put in so much effort...Great...Now he actually had to put in some training to make sure everything he did looked effortless.

Looking around the room he was greeted to the rather refreshing (And sad) Sight of his Near-death experience partner sitting at his bedside looking about as hollow as the burnt out building they were just in. That wouldn't do. Shifting about to lay on his side, Zenkai perched his head on one arm as he looked at Freja with a smug grin, ignoring his body screaming at him to go back to laying down.

"what are you looking so sad for? You think I was going to die before we even drank together? I'm not about to die before I learn all your dark secrets, it's probably something juicy like you're three raccoons operating a human body or some shit" He let out a chuckle which turned into a hacking cough...Fuck that hurt too much.

Freja was so out of it that she didn't even notice or hear Zenkai when they first woke up. She was just staring blankly into nothing, thinking about the fire and everything that transpired. Somehow, even though they were safe, it was as if she could still feel the burning rage of the flames against her skin. Of course her mummy-bandaged hands still hurt like hell too, although she couldn't complain when she looked at Zenkai. They had risked everything to get them both to safety and definitely paid a heavier price for it.

Her eyes lit up a bit as she looked up at the giant when he had finally awoken and laid on his side. ''W-What are you talking about all of a sudden?!'' She was pretty much immediately flustered, she would definitely have given him a light jab if the both of them weren't so beat up. Maybe she should save it for later when they were drinking? The thing about the raccoons made her laugh. ''You say the dumbest things sometimes!'' She was really glad he was still around to say those dumb things to her. ''You'd freak out so bad if I was actually three raccoons all along.'' She grinned, pointing a finger at him. ''Besides, you raise a valid point. I still need to hear about your quirk too.'' She was grinning up until he started coughing. She wanted to reach out, but knew it was probably better not to touch him considering how extensively Zenkai got burnt. ''..Are you okay? Don't push yourself too hard.''

Then she was right back to being flustered. Direct compliments were absolutely brutal, Elias had never really been acknowledged by strangers before in his past life, so being called cute now? He had no way to know how to handle it! Even so, was it really true? Was Freja cuter when she was happy and smiling? To be honest, moping around had been her default for years. It was hard not to given her life's circumstances taking such a sharp turn. ''O-Only someone like you could smile right away after all that! I need time to mope!'' She crossed her arms across her chest and turned her nose up as she pouted. Eventually though, she couldn't help but break into a smirk. ''I'm glad you're okay.''
