The vender would wave away Farrin’s and Natsumi’s attempts to pay before turning to face other customers; maybe they had simply come at a point of generosity. Though it was more likely that the duo had been the first to approach, he simply hoped that they would drum up a bit of business for them. Either way, she was happy with her treat. Taking the first battered bite of her snack, she was instantly mesmerized by the flavors, so much so that she hadn’t noticed Farrin’s initial reaction to his first bite, only his chewing and his words slightly hinting towards his mild displeasure.
These snacks were things that she had grown up with as a child, so the thought of the texture being a tad too much never dawned on her unless the outer batter was too soft. But with his mild response, she could tell that perhaps the tasting of the ikayaki should be saved for some other time. As she took another bite from her battered snack, she would look around as she chewed slowly; perhaps something more typical would have been a better choice instead.
It wouldn’t take her too long before she found another shop, not too far away from where they stood advertising karaage skewers. This would hopefully be something much more to his liking, or at least much more than the former.
"We can try the karaage skewer booth next!"
She’d shout with a smile in the hopes of keeping his energy high for such an adventurous day.

This festival was something she was brought to every year, and every year she would be spoiled rotten by the vendors, allowed to indulge in the foods and games within reason. Many of the vendors faces she could recall from years before, and even a few new ones that she was sure she would see again in the following years. Thinking back to years past, Natsumi would laugh a bit at Farrin’s comment, reminiscing about her first time as a child who was still learning about the world around her and how to properly present herself.
"My first time here, I ate so much that I got a stomachache for two days."
Thinking back only reminded her of the differences between the two of them. His mother was a hero, actually out saving lives while her parents debated with others behind the desk; she found the life of a hero to be so much more fulfilling than the other, even with all of its dangers. As the duo continued to walk, it became clear that Farrin didn’t know where to start, leaving their starting point up to her. As they walked, she would hum, her mind deep in thought of what his first item on the menu should be before it suddenly came to her.
He was a blank slate, but she would already have her heart set on something particular. Making her way to a nearby stall, she would lean in as she watched the attendant pour batter into a heated mold. She wasn’t quite sure of how Farrin felt about eating squid, so to ease him into it, she would start with takoyaki before potentially moving on to ikayaki. The attendant would smile, looking up at the duo, before sharing a bit of banter with Natsumi.
"I’ll do two orders of takoyaki; extra crispy, please!"
The attendant nodded as he quickly prepared to take orders of the crispy snacks, handing one order to each of Natsumi and Farrin. She would reach into her pocket to give him payment, only for him to wave off her notion with a smile as she would look over to Farrin.

She was at yet another beautiful festival, the Ikigai Haru Matsuri. A festival she had attended plenty of times, but this would be her first as a hero in training as well as without the overbearing nature of her parents nearby; she could be herself, relatively speaking. She was a bit surprised that Farrin had asked her to accompany him so early, but who was she to turn down the opportunity to snack on so many delicious treats? After all, with all of their hero assignments, she’d earned this. With their early arrival, there would be many shops already set up and prepared to go, while others would slightly lag behind.
Natsumi, despite the lack of her parents, would still be fairly noticeable to people, as some would rush over to greet her, giving their best wishes, and others would give a simple wave. Her parents had given her a reputation that preceded her even in times when she simply wanted to go unnoticed; maybe on her next outing she would try wearing a hat. In any case, she would greet them all with her usual warm smile, shaking any hand that found its way to her and returning friendly waves to the people who offered theirs first.
Farrin’s question would get a small chuckle out of Natsumi. Granted, she hadn’t been in the crowd much like this alone, and with Farrin walking beside her, she wouldn’t be surprised if someone mistook him for a bodyguard.
"Yeah, all the time as a kid. But it was a bit different with a protection detail around."
She would look around a bit at the faces that passed by and the shops, simply happy that she could experience the festival in such a different way than she was accustomed to.
"Anywhere specific do you want to start, or do you just want to dive in?"
Natsumi would ask, unaware of what type of food Farrin was in the mood for, if any at all.

Seeing the smirk in Farrin’s face seemed to alleviate some of the worry, as she knew that even with the damage he had taken, it hadn’t dampened his spirit. Their plan of splitting had worked out relatively well, as it seemed they had prepared for a frontal assault by awaiting them at the front door, a costly mistake for them. But in his ascent of the tower, he had also gathered a few more—three—bringing their total saved to nine. It didn’t surprise Natsumi in the slightest that the upper portion of the tower is where they kept the majority of the hostages, as they probably assumed the ambush would be enough to either outright stop the duo or severely tire them out.
But as expected, Farrin would be interrupted by the sound of metal scraping in hallways; it wasn’t over just yet, as she would assume the final two villain bots had emerged. Turning to face them, the duo would prepare themselves for one last bout, with Natsumi nodding and making an audible humming sound in agreement with his statement. As he took off towards the bot to the left, Natsumi would do the same, charging at the bot on the right.
As much as she would have to admit it, she had grown a bit tired and perhaps a bit sloppy with the prior combat, so she would use the environment to help make up for that shortcoming. Getting close to the bot, Natsumi would bait it into swinging at her, and as it did, she would try her best to spiral away to avoid it, only to receive a partial strike to the shoulder, forcing her to spin a bit faster than intended. Using that momentum from the spin, Natsumi would stomp at the join of the bot's arm, the blow just hard enough to bend both external and internal metals, stopping full use of the arm before she would quickly dash up, grabbing the bot under its head firmly while swinging over to its back in an attempt to tear its head free.
The bot would move a bit faster than expected and attempt to drag its back along the wall. In response, Natsumi would shrink herself down and quickly swing herself back around the front side, striking at the bot's collar area and pulling a small bracket out of the way before forcing her way inside the bot's chest. Once inside, Natsumi would randomly grab for wires, tearing as many as she could get her hands on. In response, the bot would begin to malfunction, starting with awkward twitching and then moving to the upper torso, which began to freely rotate until it eventually came to a complete stop, the bright red glow of the optical unit fading out.
Natsumi would strike the chest panel inside a few times before it bent out just enough for her to escape. Once out, she reverted to four feet again. Huffing a bit but with a smile still in her face, she would give Farrin a thumbs up, favoring her shoulder a bit.
"What are you thinking for lunch?"
She would say it with a bit of an exhausted laugh.

Natsumi was quickly descending the floors of the building by way of the stairwell. Slamming into the door and forcing it to fly open, she would be met with the sound of Farrin plucking what was left of the legs of a villain bot. With a quick glance, she could see that Farrin, much like herself, was injured, although his seemed more severe than her own as his arm was limp. Zipping in quickly, she would grab a hold of the villain bot's head, quickly and forcefully turning its head side to side as her wings would flap quickly, pulling her backwards. The motion was quick and precise, tearing the head of the bot away from its body along with a bit of wiring that stubbornly held on before she threw the head off to the side. She would hover over the ground, alternating her size to four feet, as she would smile to mask the worried look on her face.
"No stopping you, I see; how many butts did you kick on the way up?"
After his answer, Natsumi would gesture towards the elevator doors. Before speaking again.
"I got six. They’re in the elevator on the floor above, waiting for me to press the button so they know it’s safe."
With the duo now reunited, she was certain the rest of the mission would be a simple extraction, but she was also aware that nothing was ever so easy and was prepared to continue fighting if necessary.

With the hostages safely hidden in the elevator, Natsumi would continue her descent, clearing the floors below. Each floor was another battle, which quickly became a war of attrition. A floor filled with standard combatants with stun batons, followed by another floor filled with combatants armed with stun rifles, and a few that had both, with the occasional addition of the smaller humanoid villain bots; those were by far the worst. When fighting them, the issue became their ability to track her quick movements, and even as sporadic as she attempted to make her movements, they would somehow manage to find patterns in her randomness. Whereas before she had cleared the first few floors flawlessly, she was now lucky to get by without being struck or grazed once or twice.
It was becoming clear that even with their divide and conquer method, there would still be enough to become a nuisance. But with almost every other floor she cleared, she would find another hostage to rescue, and as she reached the halfway point, she would have a total of about six hidden in the elevator. After she cleared her current floor, she would take a moment to catch her breath, but she wouldn’t do this in front of the hostages. It was important for a hero to seem strong regardless of the odds, so when she stood with them, she wore a bright smile. Even with the scrapes and bits of dirt that would begin to build on her costume.
Although she was finding time to catch her breath, she was uncertain if Farrin would have such an opportunity. The rumbling on the floors below seemed to only echo up the empty staircase as she would utilize them to make her way down, and it seemed that every time she entered, the noise would continue. And so, knowing his battle was still dragging on, she would have to cut her already short break to gather herself even shorter. Taking a deep breath, she would head down the staircase again, finally making her way to the halfway point, only to find the floor completely empty. It would have appeared that their plan worked, with half of the buildings forced to be separated.
With this realization came a bit of terror; if they had all separated evenly, with some sitting on the upper floors and the others heading down to the lobby, that would mean that when she found her way down in waves with small breaks, he might have gotten the onslaught all at once. The feeling of dread set in as she would shrink herself down to her smallest size, speeding off along the floor, quickly striking each door as she moved, breaking each door open in a mad dash to clear it.

As she continued to make her way through the halls of the floor, she would quickly believe that she had discovered yet another empty floor, but she was wrong. As she pushed each door open and passed by, only to find an empty room, she would eventually come upon yet another locked door. This door was slightly different than the others, both in color and general design, enough so that it would cause Natsumi to pause before she struck the doorknob, breaking it and allowing it to freely swing open. She would be met with a slightly smaller room filled with a few discarded desks and chairs and, most importantly, a hostage whose hands and feet were bound, which she was sure was for dramatic effect.
"Don’t worry, I’m here to save you."
Natsumi would say that as she quickly rushed over, she would tear the binds, freeing the hostage. She would do her best to pretend that this actor was an actual hostage, examining them before offering her hand to help them up.
"Are you hurt? Can you stand?"
To answer important questions, she would generally assume that the hostages seemed to be in separate locations; they wouldn’t know where the others were, so there would be no point in asking. With a head nod, the hostage would take hold of Natsumi’s hand as she helped them up to their feet. On her face, Natsumi wore a smile, but in her mind, she was thinking of what would be the best way to evacuate the hostages once they were free. She wasn’t sure if their weight would be an issue, along with some people potentially being afraid of heights, leaving her with the option to clear her way down to the floors until she met up with Farrin.
"Follow me, alright?"
She would say this, holding onto the hostage's hand as she walked back towards the elevator. It wouldn’t take them too much time to reach it, with the hostages stepping over the unconscious combatants and broken villain bots. The look of wonder on their faces as they tried to figure out how someone so small had done all this Looking around herself, she would quickly see an issue with continuing to send the building with the hostage in tow: what would happen if another group of combatants fired into the elevator as it opened and hit the hostage? It would be safer for them to remain hidden.
Natsumi would press the button to call the elevator a few times before turning to the hostage with a smile. She had come up with a plan.
"I’m going to have to wait in the elevator, and I’ll take the stairs down and clear the floors below. I’ll call the elevator to each floor when I know it’s safe, alright?"
The hostage would nod, and as the elevator door opened, they would enter, the door closing as Natsumi headed to the stairs, going down the stairs to the next floor.

As Farrin would continue to fight fiercely below, Natsumi would continue to scour through rooms on the upper floors in search of the hostages, but she was beginning to see a distinctively annoying pattern. Occasionally, when locked doors were opened, she would shrink and strike the doorknob, using her enhanced strength to break it free from the door, only to find an empty room. This would continue to happen even as she forced the elevator shaft open and would descend to floors below.
From the shaft, she could hear the feint sounds of a commotion, which would only hasten her speed. The first three floors cleared quickly; random rooms were filled with mock paper, filling filing cabinets to make it seem authentic. But since there were still no people, that would change once she reached the fourth floor. Prying the doors of the elevator open, she would be met with the sudden turning of a group of six people. And a much smaller bot that she hadn’t seen before.
The men were armed with what she would only assume to be stun rifles. There would be an awkward pause as they looked at one another, taking the time to register what was actually happening. Natsumi would force a smile in an attempt to lighten the mood in hopes it would buy a few extra seconds to plan her attack.
"Wrong floor?"
As she spoke, the men would take aim and begin to fire. Quickly darting in, she would quickly, but for some time, narrowly dodge the gunfire. Once close, she would kick and push the direction of their weapons at one another, breaking some of them but also forcing a few to fire at their stun position before she realized her position was becoming too much of a hazard with their near misses getting closer and closer to hitting their mark.
Shrinking her size, she would fly into the bot, using a small gap between its shoulders to take cover inside of it, the weapons first hitting off of the paneling and making a distinctive ringing sound. It wasn’t perfect, but it would work. Flying through the boat's body, she would tear a few wires leading to its head before forcing it off, flying up and throwing the helmet towards one of the men, taking the time of confusion to then quickly take her leave, dashing off down the hallways looking for any hostages on this floor, with one of two people chasing behind her. She was confident her speed could keep her at a safe distance.
While moving down the hallway, she would zip past a cubicle, grabbing a stapler to hurtle at one of the men behind her, who was struck in the helmet and knocked off his feet. This would give her just enough time to rush back and pull the legs out of the other, which seemed to have done the trick, as she would hover in the hallway for a moment before continuing her search.

The duo's pace was amplified by Farrin’s quirk; their speed would be uncanny. It would seem that almost in an instant, they would be at the doors of the building. The outer areas of the buildings were empty, which Natsumi would find to be nothing more than poor oversight, as she would have assumed to find at least two or three sentries outside in order to relay to others if someone was approaching, but this would greatly work in their favor. At the front gates, Farrin would simply point upward, a signal for her to begin her ascent to the top of the building. Which she would find east enough, using the speed she had built and in their moving towards the main door and changing direction. A small loop as she moved forward, accompanied by shrinking herself down to her smallest possible size—ten centimeters—to ensure she could continue with her momentum, would be harder to spot from inside the building if there was someone looking out.
Her speed at this size was much faster than before, but with the dissipation of Farrin’s quirk, she would eventually slow down to her more natural speed. Blowing past the windows quickly and to the upper floor, she would make her way in undetected and find a slightly opened window with just enough of an opening that she could slip through undetected before returning to the height of four feet. The room she had entered was empty, but the closed door led to what she assumed would be a hallway. Using her wings to hover close to the door, she would press her ear against it in an attempt to hear any source of movement.
It would be a few moments before she would hear the mad squeaking of shoes shuffling quickly, meaning they had all just decided to run or Farrin had begun his assault. She would wait until she heard the squeaks pass by the door before bursting out of the room and into the hall to see three combatants who were all headed for an elevator. Moving forward quickly, she would grab the legs of the one closest to her, as his shouts would make her move further away from her back. Moving forward to meet him and skipping over the combatant in the middle, she would punch the farthest in the solar plexus, a strong and sudden blow enough to knock him unconscious, before turning and doing the same to the one in the middle, then quickly landing on the first who she had tripped. She would shake a bit as she did it, repeating herself a few times as she began to search the floor for hostages.
"Sorry, sorry, sorry."

The answer to her question would be something she wouldn’t have expected: his small display of speed that served as a warmup to start the mission had been done without the assistance of his quirk. With her thoughts prior being how much she would struggle to keep ahead of the tempo of his strikes, it would only be made worse by the use of his quirk. If his smirk was any indication of his use of it, he would be much faster. But she wouldn’t expect anything less of the man who wished to be the number one of not only Japan but of the world.
His comment on her quirk would warm her smile as she nodded lightly in agreement with it. After that, he would move on to formulating a plan of action. The hostages were held in a large building that would be easy to reach, but they wouldn’t be allowed to enter and search for them freely. Her first thought would be to simply fly to the top of the building and infiltrate it from there, using the element of surprise to work their way down and clear it floor by floor. But the small hitch in her plan would be Farrin. Even at her smallest and arguably strongest, Natsumi would struggle to carry him to the top of the building, and after such a hike, she would most likely need to take a breather. But if they took a split approach, a two-pronged attack, they would split the focus of the combatants inside.
"Divide and conquer. I start high, and you start low. We worked our way to the middle of the building. More people will focus on you easily, and I can take a few out if they try to make their way from the upper floors down to you."
An interesting plan in theory, but she has always been told during her brief training to leave a margin for error, as no plan is ever fully proofed. Her margin would be combatants not splitting evenly, leaving one side to deal with more than the other. But even then, she was still fairly confident in her abilities to either fight them off or do her best to regroup with Farrin. But the most important part was that their plans seemed to align rather well; she would nod her head in agreement to Farrin just as the bell would ring, signaling the duo to begin.
Natsumi would shrink herself down, bringing her height to four feet, before she would quickly begin to flap her wings to hover in place. Her attention pulled away as she first noticed the crackling emerald energy; it wasn’t her doing, so it was safe to assume it was Farrin’s. She looked over to see him readying himself, so she would prepare herself to do the same. The slowing of everything around them would start slowly but become more aggressive until Farrin would dart forwards, and Natsumi would follow his lead as she would quickly flap her wings, following closely behind, fully intending to change her direction upwards as soon as they reached the main doors of the building.

As Natsumi approached, she had the chance to see a bit of his warmup for the mission ahead in action; his punches were fast, much faster than she would have initially thought they would be, but given his pedigree, his speed made sense. The strikes were fast enough to blur with each punch, leaving her to see the gap between them as even with her own slightly impressive speed she would struggle to defend herself again a direct onslaught; that thought brought her mind back to the students sparring they had watched when they first met.
She wasn’t the only one who had dawned their hero attire, as Farrin also wore his own hero costume, whose color scheme was a drastic difference from her own. Where hers was intended to be bright and colorful to draw attention, his was dark and much more tactical. An odd pair to say the least, but she would only hope that their teamwork would be much less at odds than their fashion statements.
Hearing Farrin call her by her hero's name would only warm her smile further, as she saw it more as a professional sign of respect than anything else. After a brief hello, he would jump into the next big question that was soon to factor into how they would work together: their quirks. He would go first, explaining his quirk quickly and to its full extent, something that would not go unnoticed by Natsumi. In return, she would do the same, which is something she rarely tends to do.
"Your quirk sounds amazing. Is that why you punched so fast? My quirk allows me to shrink and grow wings; the smaller I get, the faster and stronger I get too!"
Although the bell was going to ring soon, Natsumi couldn’t help but ask a small question, but her mind was much more focused on the possibilities his quirk could allow her to explore. Imagine how much faster she could move at her smallest with a boost from Farrin, but eventually the range of his quirk would come into question. Something that she wouldn’t quite be sure if she should ask or if he would even answer, so she would simply not ask.

Natsumi was admittedly a bit nervous for her first hero simulation mission. But the butterflies in her stomach were a feeling she had grown accustomed to throughout her life. She would breathe in deeply, holding her breath at the top for a slow count of five before exhaling; she had this all under control. Closing the locker door to make sure her costume was fitted correctly, she would take time to inspect it. Her costume seemed childish, but it was of her own design, a design that she had tried to update as much as she could as her time to have a costume created drew near. It was only the first iteration, and she was sure there would be more to come, so for now she would have to deal with the slight embarrassment. The simulation for today takes place on the beta training grounds; the objective is hostage rescue. A forward-looking task. Her partner for the assignment would be none other than Farrin, better known as Oberon. The duo had met before, so there would be less formality they would have to exchange to get comfortable with one another, but there was one glaring issue: they hadn’t ever discussed their quirks, so this simulation would also display how they would work with unpredictable variables. Exiting the locker room and making her way to the ground floor, she would repeatedly natter to herself. "Perfection is perfect."A mantra she had picked up as a child to accompany her breathing as she would make her way onto the ground and towards Farrin. She would see Farrin, who was doing a bit of last-minute training himself, which would help get her out of her own head, if only for a moment, as she would smile warmly. "Hi, Oberon. Ready to start?"She would emphasize his hero's name as she said it, not only to show that she had remembered it but also as a professional courtesy. They weren’t viewing each other as fellow students, as they had before, but as fellow heroes. |

Farrin’s observation on the spar was correct; the flame-fisted student was perhaps too aggressive for his goopie counterpart to gain any form of traction, but it would only make her wonder if the issue was potentially the amount of space they had to initially work with. But this was something that she would have to analyze at a later time, because now it was time to eat! As He would move towards his chosen dish, Natsumi would move for himself. Picking up her salad with a grin, Natsumi would turn her attention back to Farrin as he spoke about what little he could remember about Ireland. It was always something that she had wanted to experience, traveling to different places, but as the child of two political figures, it made simply going out on her own somewhat of a task, even more so with her slightly overbearing parents.
She would do her best to try to picture it for herself as he gave a brief description: luscious greens unburden by the sounding cities. Her grin for her meal would quickly change to a warm smile as she pictured Ireland, thinking that perhaps she’d eventually have her chance to travel; if so, this would be one of the first places she would like to visit. Deep down, she knew that no country was without its darkness, but for this moment, she could picture everyone being friendly—no villainy, only friendly people helping one another—exactly the way she hoped that Japan would be when she became the next number one hero; she would make her home a utopia.
"It sounds really beautiful!"
Picking up her salad and a small container of dressing, Natsumi would scan the dishes for a bit until she could also find her fruit cup, carefully balancing it onto her salad container. The cafeteria was usually busy, but luckily, Farrin had found them an empty table. Quickly making her way to the table, she would take her seat, opening her salad container for only a moment to pour her salad dressing of choice on, only to close the container again and shake it, her special method for making sure she got the dressing to cover as much as possible, before reopening the container and grabbing her fork, ready to dig in.
It was at this moment that she remembered something from earlier she had meant to ask him and figured it would be a good topic to ask now.
"Oh! Earlier you mentioned a partner; are you part of a hero duo?"
She hadn’t been entirely sure how it would work, but she knew of heroes whose quirks worked in tandem with someone else’s, so much so that they could easily be considered to be two people with a shared quirk.

The smells that would waft out from the main cafeteria doors would only serve to further tease Natsumi’s belly, as she would feel another much less audible rumble slip out. In her mind, she had already begun to picture her decadent meal: a salad with more protein than greenery, dressing, and a fruit cup on the side. She would be pulled away from her daydream, soon to become a reality, by Farrin’s compliment; it would be enough to get a light blush and a warmer smile in response. It wasn’t that she wasn't used to getting compliments, but they were usually never directed towards her combat ability; it was a refreshing change of pace for her.
"Thank you. Because of my quirk, it’s best for me to pick up on small details during fights so I can exploit them."
Natsumi had told him something that she hadn’t told him anyway in the academy: the basis of her fighting style. It wasn’t supposed to be a well-kept secret, but it was much easier for her to fight against people who weren’t too keen on what she was doing. But Farrin was not without his own merits during the observation; he was able to accurately gauge the skill of the two fights almost at the start of the bout, an impressive and important skill to have for any combatant, and she was almost certain it extended much further than that.
"You’re no slouch yourself. You had a fight pretty much called almost before it started."
She would respond with a compliment of her own. His answer to her question was a bit of a two-parter, but it did satiate her curiosity. An accent of an Irishman born in Ireland who then moved to the United States. Although his time in the States hadn’t managed to affect his accent much, she was almost certain that he might have picked up a few things from his time there. Natsumi found herself getting a bit more excited than she would have thought about the concept of moving from nation to nation, but she could see herself eventually longing to return home.
"What was Ireland like?"
She’d ask with excitement in her voice. As they finally reached the cafeteria, Farrin would open the door for Natsumi, a true gentleman. Walking in, she couldn’t escape the aromas coming from the food, as she would seem to lose track of her question and go back to daydreaming, now thinking of adding a dessert, maybe some ice cream. As Farrin asked what she would get, she couldn’t help but grin a bit, as she had been daydreaming about the perfect lunch.
"A grilled chicken salad with ginger miso and extra chicken and a fruit cup!"
She’d respond joyously, trying her best to contain her excitement but failing miserably.
