Nothing like a naive, bubble-headed optimist to vomit sunshine all over a perfectly Machiavellian scheme. It was a perfect opportunity to scout the competition and steal some Quirks. He could appreciate the effort she put into the performance. Nice didactical use of her Quirk to get her point across to the room temperature IQ marks that were in attendance. Bit phoney and over the top, but what can you do? At least it made sense, somewhat.[break][break]
She wasn’t the only one spoiling the occasion. School just had to fill the seats with an All-Star cast of stupidity. The usual suspects were there, Jun was there, because of fuckin’ course she was; there was also some blonde bint he’d never heard of before, big bang of anxiety coming off of her; there was also that dude he met on the street, no wonder he was so curious back then; and of course-huh, that wasn’t right… is that Kei? Why was he here? No, seriously, why? Who invited him? HE’S NOT EVEN IN THE HERO COURSE. HE’S NOT GONNA’ HAVE A LICENSE! WHY DOES HE WANT TO TRAIN HIS QUIRK?!? [break][break]
All throughout the introductions, the Support Student could sense a piercing glare being shot from one of the back seats. A murderous intent focused squarely on him. God, what was he even trying here? Did he want to switch courses? What would a dumb, weak, and gullible-wait a minute... Hmmm. Maybe he could use this to his advantage.[break][break]
The prospect was just what the little shit needed to lift his spirits. Hiding his spite, but none of his disdain, the omnipotent one addressed the room. “Kurokami Gen. 『All for One』” His face rested, bored as all hell, onto his closed fist, while he crossed his legs. “You get the drill by now. Everything you plebs can do, I can do better.” The look in his eyes said it all. This circus, and by extension, the clowns sitting beside him, were beneath him. Not even worthy of his usual displays of talent. “As for the Super Move, well, why spoil the surprise~?” The subtle glee that ran through his words was enough to send a chill down someone’s spine.[break][break]

Good, they’re still busy up there. He had time for this. “See, I was born with the power to copy and stockpile any power I see.” Mid-explanation, Gen pushed himself off of the gate, passing the boundary that separated Mundane from Divine. He got just a few steps closer to this stranger. “I don’t even have to deal with the downsides, I can just turn them on and off.” He raised his hands. snapping his fingers. Out of his raised index, a small flame emerged from the tip of his digits. “Like that.” Then he snapped them again, causing a small spark to dance at the source of the sound. “Or that. Slowly, he brought them apart, revealing a sphere of pure darkness. It was no larger than a tennis ball, but its size did not do it justice. That thing bore ill. Every inch of it radiated a sickening aura of malice. An endless void of entropy, threatening to swallow everything it touched, floating just a few millimeters between his palms. And after giving the mark just enough time to ogle, one of his arms would close around that thing, causing it to vanish from existence. It didn’t take a genius-level intellect to guess that his asymmetrically-shaped friend with a burnt mug wasn’t a fan of fire. He always loved finding people’s scars and pouring salt on them, but Elijah, he wore those plain on his singular sleeve. That little twitch, the grimace breaking the ever-present poker face, they were all he needed to confirm that suspicion. “Afraid I’ll take the other arm?” He was getting to him, and the real fireworks hadn’t even started yet. [break][break] It didn’t take a mastermind to know that a reply was coming. Eli wasn’t being subtle about the method either. Before the bell had rung, he’d already picked out the means to extract his pound of flesh, and his attire made it clear where he’d be drawing his tools from. Being Quirkless and all, the only real threat came if he got too close with those. “Still, pretty cruel of the school to set this match up.” On paper, there was no way that thing could pose a threat to him. “It's almost like they want you to los-” And then, the bell rang.[break][break] Gen’s eyes barely had any time to widen before the knife cut through the space between them. It lodged itself deep into his chest, ripping into the immaculate black vest. The impact shook him, driving him back by a step and causing him to double over in grievous pain. The teachers’ eyes steadied, ready to end the contest at any moment. The crowd didn’t know whether to gasp at the possible murder they just witnessed, or to be happy about who it happened to. Almost falling to one knee, Gen looked down at the wound, before painfully gritting his teeth at his murderer. “You…”[break][break] But then of course, that grimace would shift into a grin, revealing the act for what it was.[break][break] “I knew you had it in you, Eli-chan~”[break][break] Were it not for the knife still sticking out of his guts, then you’d swear that nothing had happened. Gen was standing upright, no hints of pain and no drop of blood to be seen anywhere on him. A simple flick of the blade revealed how innefective the ambush was. “Attacking me out of the gate like that.” Despite his antics, though, an eagle-eyed viewer could tell Gen wasn’t unharmed. Under the act, he was showing some discomfort, but nothing compared to what you’d expect from being stabbed in the stomach. “I can almost respect it.” [break][break] “Still…” It was going to be hard to pay attention to it, considering what he was about to do next. "If you’re trying to beat me, you should try going for the kill…” He grabbed the knife, ripping it from his wound. The steel had been painted a visceral shade of crimson, and then. “Like this!”[break][break]  [break][break] He jammed that thing right into his eye. Blood gushed out of the socket, a sight enough to make some viewers faint and vomit. A painful sight, to be sure, yet the only one who didn’t seem bothered by it was Gen himself. “Not like it would’ve changed anything, though.” Without a care in the world, he ripped the blade out, letting more plasma gush onto the floor. “See?” Almost as soon as the wound was exposed, Elijah could see it beginning to close, and before another blade could be launched, his roomie was fit as a fiddle. The Insider. The cool transfer student from Montreal. A man obviously scarred by tragedy, but unlike most, not defined by it. Cool, calm, collected, but at the end of the day, Quirkless. In other words… an easy win.[break][break] Gen’s roommate. The only man he deemed interesting enough for that privilege.[break][break] All those things mattered more than ever before. They were why this match was happening in the first place. Oh yeah, the school will say that these fights were chosen randomly, the teachers will proudly declare that no human bias was involved in the process, but you and I know better than that, don’t we? This is Kurokami Gen we’re talking about. There’s no person he can’t deceive, and no system he can’t cheat.[break][break] He picked Elijah, not the teachers, and not the hands of fate or whatever other bullshit metaphor you want to use for dumb luck. He’d spent enough time to know him. His strengths, his weaknesses, and everything in between. Not only that, but the bout itself was bound to catch the crowd's eye. There’s a certain morbid entertainment people get from lopsided encounters. Whether it's watching a seven foot tall super heavyweight maul a midget or watching a monster with a thousand Quirks make short work of someone who was born with none. In short, he knew the matchup, and he’d knew it’d get people talking. In short, no better choice for a tune-up.[break][break] Gen didn’t even wait for his opponent to finish walking up on stage to start his personal brand of psychological torture. The Canadian’s ears would be assaulted by the stadium’s speakers going on full blast. It was far from the most concerning sound surrounding him.[break][break] BOOM![break][break] [break][break] Out of nowhere, an explosion would erupt from the tunnel. A deafening roar of expansive force, followed by a loud sizzling and crackling underscoring it. The stadium was painted a dreadful shade of crimson. Thousands could be heard gasping in unison. Hundreds could be seen trying to run from the pandemonium, their hysteric screams drowned out by the bombastic orchestra. A voice over the P.A. told everyone to remain calm, but to no avail. It was as if Hell itself had broken into our world, and its most terrible Beast had just walked out before our eyes. [break][break] Amidst the dancing flames, a figure stood at the center, unharmed. No more than a pitch-black silhouette, wavering from the intense heat. An endless abyss in the shape of man. Two red eyes formed in its face, followed by a single line beneath it. A wicked smile, one Elijah had seen a million times before. The figure brought its arms to chest height, before parting them to both sides, and with them, the inferno around it. The scalding seas split, revealing the culprit behind this scene.[break][break] Kurokami Gen. The Devil Himself.[break][break] And if he was going to play that role, then he needed to look the part. Gone was the faux-fur hoodie and the T-shirts, and you could bet he wasn’t about to wear that god-awful uniform in its place. He was wearing a three-piece suit. Black blazer and vest with a subtle floral pattern, and under it, a crimson dress shirt, no tie, with the top button undone. His pants and shoes matched the outer part of his attire, both in color and in style. As he reveled in the heat of the moment, the blaze painted his figure in the same shade as the rest of the arena. Combined with his impossibly handsome features, it made for quite an appearance. If looks could kill, then he’d already be on trial for murder.[break][break] It didn’t take a genius to realize how pleased he was with himself. The moment was just as he'd planned. The taylor-made fit, the pyrotechnics, the music, and especially the looks on everyone’s faces, whether they be horny or horrified. Armed with his killer looks and that shit-eating grin of his, he walked to the marble ring, and with every step he took, his soles left a fiery footprint in his wake. Ah, that was much better. This guy was finally learning his place in the pecking order. Oh, now she was preaching at him. Honestly, he was missing the sass, at this point. Luckily, that gave the indisposed idiot a big enough break to reach around to the dumpster and grab his backpack. “No can do on the showcase, I’m out of juice.” Without even looking at her, he’d point to the massive ice wall. Still, it was clear she’d put some thought into this. His fingers would move to crack the cold one open, however, after a few moments of idle thought, he froze, before turning his sights back to her. “Why don’t you tell me why you really want to help me?” Sure, all of those reasons sounded good, on paper, but he wasn't buying them. People are always looking out for number one, even if they don't know it. “Are you trying to pay me back for that whole ‘saving your life’ deal? All good so far. The witness seemed willing to cooperate, Ylva was keeping sociopathy in check, Hebiru was keeping quiet, Jun was being a tool and… wait, is that-? No. No. No. God DAMMIT! Why is he here? He wasn’t at the bar. He was asleep during the whole thing! Why did Hebiru bring that asshole here? Was this some sort of secret plan to undermine him? Did she bring this useless piece of shit here just to get him off his game? Was it because of the e-mail? IT BETTER NOT BE BECAUSE OF THE E-MAIL. [break][break]
Gen didn’t say a word. He didn’t need to. He stared daggers into the back of the amateur stenographer’s head. Raw, unfiltered hatred coursing through his expression. The kind of look you’d shoot a cockroach crawling around in your kitchen. It was like if he were trying to blow up Kei’s head with his eyes and mind alone. Of course, he wouldn’t succeed, but that only served to intensify his hatred of the manlet.[break][break]
Whatever, at least the rest of the rest of this deposition was going smoothly. Even his jokes were landing. It was nice to see that someone understood his dark sense of humor. Sometimes, the only thing life can’t take away is your ability to laugh, even if it's at your own misery. “What? Couldn’t wish for free healthcare?” Considering everything else her power afforded, this much seemed like a drop in the bucket.[break][break]
Putting the jokes and the extremely annoying company he was keeping for a moment, Gen needed to get down to brass tacks. He couldn’t let Jun take point in this. Sure, she was asking about important things, but that was now, who could say what she was going to ask five minutes from now? If he didn’t start taking some initiative, then that dumbass was sure to waste the little they had inquiring about how she was bullied in middle school, what her first crush was, and all sorts of dumb bullshit from her tragic past. “What wishes did you make with it? We need to have a full account of any damage you caused.” That was a good start. Paired with Jun’s question and what he saw, it’d give him plenty to work with, especially if he wanted to integrate it into his bag of tricks.[break][break]

Huh, this guy was pretty smart, huh? Most people would get so hung up on the insults that they’d forget the bottom line of it all. Not bad. Matching up on the same team as Jun, whilst also sharing a side with that ice-cold psycho and her girlfriend? At this point, U.A. wasn’t even bothering to hide it, were they? What were the odds? That settles it, from now on, no relying on their ‘random’ draws. Fool me once… and all of that. If somebody was gonna’ be rigging teams and brackets for this, it might as well be him. Despite being surrounded by a group of hot chicks—and also Jun—Gen knew this wasn’t going to be any fun. The killjoy doling out lectures was bad enough, but he had a distinct feeling he wasn’t going to be the most disruptive element in this quartet. Oh, speaking of which, Andy and Ylva were already fighting. Wow, you can see the sparks flying off those two. Usually, when two people fight this much, it means something. Still, best to cut this off at the pass. Guess it's time for Gen to do what he does best. [break][break]

“Oh, get a room already!” Stepping between fire and ice, Gen would antagonize his teammates in record time. “Don't get me wrong, I’d love watching some girl on girl action right now, but I have a gold medal to collect.” That much was true. For this to work, he needed to win. Anything short of an undisputed victory would not do. “So, wanna kiss and make up? 'Cause we have a lot to go over."[break][break]
“Like for example, how we don't need to be so close together. It’ll only slow us down, and let's face it, none of you are that fast to begin with, so we need to find edges where we can. Let’s get the obvious out of the way. A compact unit can easily pass the ball, but its far from efficient, especially with Gen on the team. “Jun-chan here can make chains. So if things ever get dicey with the bomb, she can pull the person holding it to her for a safe pass.” By now, everyone should've been familiar enough with each other's skills to know that much. “No need to risk throwing it around like an idiot.” Gen wasn't being subtle about who that was aimed towards. His eyes had shifted to the Ice Queen mid-sentence, full of equal parts disdain and disappointment at her faulty deduction. You know what they say about assuming, it blows up on the asses of you and me. [break][break]
“And if she can do it, I can do it. You know the drill by now, All for One, infinite arsenal of Quirks, God Tier Superpower, better than you, yadda yadda.” At this point, the other three must’ve been sick of hearing Gen go on and on about how he can copy everyone’s gifts. They’re probably sick of hearing him talk, period, but—“Point is, as long as the two of you stay in our range, then we can be more spread out.”[break][break]
“Now, as far as roles are concerned.” Walking ahead of the group, Gen would start assessing. Two fingers pointed at the girls in blonde and silver blue. “Obviously plans can change depending on the situation, but Jun and Ylva are better suited for defense and traversal.” Ylva could help make platforms, while Jun could do… well anything with that bullshit power of hers. “Physically, Andy-chan’s the biggest and strongest person here, so she should take point.” That was the nicest way he could say ‘you’re big and dumb, so you should tank my hits for me’, and he wasn't doing a great job at hiding that intent. “While I will do what I do best”—finally, it was time for the big cheese himself, and what better role for him than—”sabotaging everyone else.”[break][break]

There are no words in the English language that could accurately describe how much this sucked. The most devious masterminds in Japan could not have devised a more painful punishment for Gen’s crimes, both physically and mentally. Not only was he rolling around in pain, clutching at his own legs on the floor, but this bitch was there to see it. To cap it off, she was getting sassy on him, too. As having his own legs sabotaging him wasn’t enough. This wasn’t a color she wore all too often, and if it weren’t for the excruciating pain he was going through, he might’ve been able to appreciate how well it suited her. Shame she couldn’t keep that act up for long.[break][break]
Spittle flew from Gen’s mouth as he held back a scream, his body turning to look at his tormentor. Gone was the everpresent grin from his lips, but not even this could wipe the hatred from his eyes. His body screamed at him to accept her offer, and maybe, if it had been any other time, place, or person, his weaker mind would’ve complied. Bending a knee, kissing a ring, getting on hands and knees, no act was too embarrassing for the recently crippled and perennially shameless student. It was the rational thing to do, after all. His lungs were working overtime, every breath trying to calm the agony, before leaking out from between his teeth as he looked upon his would-be savior. That’s when any rational thought flew out the window. The moment he saw her a single sentiment escaped from the bowels of his soul. “Fuck… off!” Immediately afterwards, he launched the only physical attack his shitty little body could manage in its current state. He spat on her condescending attempt to mend fences, with the projectile landing squarely at the girl’s feet. She could take that dumb little smile, her goody-two-shoes attitude, and condescending offer and shove it.[break][break]
The young man then crawled away from his salvation. His arms dragging the rest of his useless body towards the nearest dumpster, before trying to use it to sit himself upright. “No one ask-fuck!” The curse escaped from his lips, cutting his thought off mid-sentence as he turned to face this dumb broad. Luckily, those precious seconds were all he needed to form a more appropriate response, or well... something more in line with what you'd expect from him. “You think I... need your help? I can heal entire limbs on my own! Besides, I don't recall ordering the 'pain in the ass', so I don't even know why you're here!”[break][break]

There it was. The truth. The very confusing, and almost deranged truth. “Wait, you set the room on fire?” Now that he was hearing it in full, even Gen surprised at how quickly he managed to get someone to resort to such extreme measures. It usually took him a few minutes to get people this riled up. It wasn’t a personal best, but sometimes you can’t help but be taken aback by your own success. “Why?” Maybe Elijah was just trying to establish how he was not to be messed with, maybe this little self-harming confession was part of that, too. "You could've just reported it, at worst, we could've you a... less problematic roommate."[break][break]
Apart from the obvious, the teacher seemed to buy it. The idea that Gen was annoying enough to make someone resort to arson seemed all too believable. The state of his room just one year ago could best be described as a “biohazard in the making”, so his description of this place tracked. In fact, everything he said just felt right. It fit. The mysterious second fire, the blackmail attempt, the under the table deals, he’d heard it all before, and it always traced back to Kurokami Gen. Sadly, that’s where the good news ended. “Its a pretty story, Eli-chan, but I’m afraid it just isn’t true.” The jig was up, but that by no means meant that this scamster was on the backfoot, if anything, Elijah had handed him this one on a silver platter. “I’ll admit, I may have fudged my earlier testimony to try to save my dear roomie.” No need to take any blame anymore if this dude was willing to shoulder it. “It just wouldn’t be fair if he had to fly all the way back to Canada for such a silly little mistake, but it seems my kindness is wasted here.” [break][break]
The teacher knew that everything Elijah said was true, but no matter how badly everyone wanted to believe it, reality just didn’t support those claims. This little shit had covered it up like he always did. He was going to get away with this, too, and he was going to be so smug about it.[break][break]
“Yes, he started the fire, I don’t know why, but this crazy guy showed up to this impeccable room and committed arson, against me, of all people! Can you believe that?” Of course, this performance wouldn’t be complete with a little bit of drama. “Worse yet, to slander me like that is just completely out of line!” It's always good to make a scandal out of these things. Doesn’t matter if you’re a humble waiter or a great Hero, everyone’s the same. Add some hysterics and watch as even the most stone-cold of authorities become flustered. “I’m sure you’re dying to pin this on me, sensei, but look around! His story just doesn’t add up. The room is spotless, there’s no sign of this supposed second fire, and no evidence of this scandalous bit of blackmail he mentioned.”[break][break]
Elijah had been surprisingly clever. He’d gotten ahead of Gen’s play by bringing up his cover-up attempt. Not like it would help him. Even if he was right, you can’t prove what never happened. “And all of that stuff about me hiding the mess to hurt his credibility? The room could’ve been like this all along. Better yet, how can you be sure I cleaned this up? How do you know this also isn't his doing? He just showed up here, we don't know what kinda Quirk he has.” Each question fired out in a row, attempting to overwhelm the other side of this discussion.[break][break]

Well, so much for keeping things under wraps. “That doesn’t sound like me.” The worst part was that it definitely sounded like something the omnipotent owner of All for One would do. He sure did love his extortion. A little bit of blackmail here, some strong-arming there, and cap it off with an under-the-table deal. A tale that got as old as time around here. Swear to God, man, some people just can’t help themselves. Still, as much as that made his life hell right now, Gen really wanted to know where this dude was going with this, and he wasn’t the only one.[break][break]

Of course she was back to working out. “Rest” was a foreign word for these wannabes, sometimes for better, mostly for worse. This case was definitely the latter. “A little cut? Is that what we’re calling it? You damn near bled out back there.” Most people aren’t so blasé about getting stabbed by a longsword. This started to border on self-induced gaslighting. “If it weren’t for me, your insides would’ve been rolling around the floor of that bar.” A shame, too. He probably could’ve gotten good money for those on the black market.[break][break]
Speaking of gaslighting yourself by shrugging off a monumental amount of pain, Gen was starting to reach his limit here. As much as he would’ve loved to spend the day making a defenseless, powerless, and brainless Hero miserable, he really needed Jun to beat it. Maybe, if he was just his old, annoying self, Jun would realize that her time was better spent doing literally anything else other than talking to him. “Besides, why are you trying so hard anyway? We both know that no matter how hard you train, second place is the best you can-” but that was as far as he got, as right then and there, he felt Jun kicking him in the back of the leg. To her, it was probably a gentle little tap, more a graze than an attack, but to a weak little bitch like Gen, it felt like someone had stabbed his already wounded leg with a salt-covered knife. His eyes bulged, threatening to escape from their sockets; his cheeks puffed up, barely holding back a scream; and his body rolled away from her touch, trying to caress the recently injured leg. He was in no shape to cover any of that up with his Quirk, but somehow, by some act of God(or perhaps, the devil), Gen managed to hold back the pitiful wail and the tears that would’ve normally accompanied such a moment of weakness. Somehow, the act remained, disturbed, but not broken.[break][break]
Still, that didn’t stop this stupid broad from pestering with a million questions, each dumber and more insulting than the last. “Jun-chan, I can use every superpower in this school. If I was trying to impress someone, I wouldn’t be doing push-ups. Is that really all you extras think about? How to impress chicks?” If this wasn’t Jun, he would’ve praised her timing and the irony behind them, but given who we are dealing with here, these were likely all genuine queries. Worst of all, was that by some fluke of nature, she was getting close to the truth. “I could explain the logic behind it, but I doubt a single-Quirked simpleton like you would understand.” [break][break]

He petulantly fired back, unwilling to let her in on the obvious. Now that she’d been allowed a peek behind the curtain, Gen was getting weary of letting her in on any more intel. But not to worry, he had just the plan to keep his cover intact. “Here, I’ll show you.” Sure, one of his legs was killing him, but as an able-bodied man, he was born with two of them. All he needed to do was put his weight on his other leg and… “See? I'm doing just fin-AAGH FUCK! AGAIN?!”[break][break]

Almost as soon as he turned to smugly show Jun just how fine everything was, the human trash bag immediately felt the same pulsing vein now coursing through his left thigh. Years of a sedentary lifestyle had betrayed his body, and now, it was paying the favor back tenfold. Almost immediately, the young bastard fell on his ass, clutching the back of both legs and doubling over in agony. Restlessly, he rolled from one side to the other, letting out an endless deluge of profanity from under his breath. To the girl, it was barely audible, catching a "son of a bitch" or a "motherfucker" every three or four words.[break][break]

All things considered, he was looking a lot more confident than last time. Might have to do with his appearance. Gen let out a whistle, almost impressed at the kid’s stiff upper lip. Toothpick Hero. That was a new one. A welcome change of pace. Such defiance in the face of seniority and authority was rare around this part. With a playful tone, Gen was quick to bite back. “Wow, do you kiss your great-grandma with that mouth, kid?” He turned to the person he assumed to be her guardian. It turned out that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree, even if it was thousand year old oak.
Still, there was one thing she got wrong. With a single finger raised, he wouldn’t miss the chance to correct the hag. “Especially if they’re assholes.” A little here, a smug grin there and voilá, another day ruined by Kurokami Gen. This would be where our story ended. Or at least, it’s where it should have. Of course, somebody just had to play the Hero, and now we’re here. Can’t get away from these types, even on holidays.
The monstrous man sighs. He turns around, his act unimpeded. Don’t want this guy to be loafing around for when they get back. “If you want smiles and laughter, then go to a circus.” With a little giggle, he adds. “You’d fit right in… whoever you are.”
