The buzzer had already sounded off. The Locker Room pep talks and debriefs were a thing of the past. Gen was now stepping into the ruined, sunken city at the heart of the Unforeseen Simulation Joint. His hood barely managed to catch the buckets-full of rainwater that poured from the sprinklers.[break][break]
In front of him were what he could only presume to be dozens of paid actors, making due by taking part in this charade. They hid in each nook and cranny of these ruins, crying, pissing their pants, and some staying deadly quiet to try to dock as many points as possible. An embarrassing display for what should be a group of trained grown ass men. [break][break]
And why did all of this have to happen? Because Kurokami Gen had just so happened to set off an explosive charge relatively close to a few students during a public exercise. The bomb may have injured a few of them, but how could we know if that was intentional? Some might say that the maniacal laughter that followed, the villainous taunting, and the near-suicidal attempt to throw a particular student off a cliff could point to this all being intentional, but details schmetails. There was a really annoying meeting afterward and the school’s dumbass nurse decided this was the best way to solve things. They sure loved dialing things up to eleven around here. Making mountains out of molehills is how this school operates. What a pain in the ass. He then thought about how much money his theatrics had cost the school, and that was all he needed to brighten his mood and take a step forward- [break][break] And then, a chain went taught, stopping him in his tracks. He looked back, and his mood soured once again.[break][break]
“Right, you’re still here.”[break][break]
With a look of pure disdain, the human antithesis of likeability stared his so-called partner down, and by extension, the thing holding them together. A sturdy pair of handcuffs. Gen could remember that woman’s monotone voice back at the entrance, specifically for the most important part of this exercise. One tailor-made to make him lose his mind. [break][break] “There’s a sensor inside your bindings, it will detect any attempt at taking them off. If it goes off, your partner will instantly fail.”[break][break]
This, of course, pissed Gen off to no end. There was nothing he wanted more in the world than to be able to slip out of these fucking things and mock that asshole for daring to believe in him. He wanted to make a mockery of this whole thing, but was impotent to see it realized. The worst part was, if he was who he said he was, it would’ve been so easy to do it, too.[break][break]
And speaking of his partner…[break][break] [attr="class","curragebot"] Radiate, recognize one silent call as we all form one dark flame.

Michael Faraday
Stuck With You
Michael quickly began assessing the scenario. The sound of the buzzer would still be echoing through the sunken city if it wasn't for the people simulating panic, screaming and calling for help. Water still poured down from above to help set the scene of the disaster zone. Michael and Gen had been briefed namely on the mission parameters and the condition of their attachment for the exercise. They were bound together by less than 2 meters of metal wire connected to their handcuffs. One on Michael's right wrist and the other on Gen's left wrist.
The exercise itself would not be particularly easy, especially if Gen was as obstinate as he was during the meeting they had with Dr. Yanai Hebiru or, worse, as antagonistic as he was during the Armor Wars event. Michael just wanted to help Gen overcome their more villainous tendencies and not get expelled, but his linked accomplice seemed particularly stubborn and abrasive. Michael hoped that physically depending on Michael's cooperation, Gen would put aside his difficult demeanor and help to succeed at the task at hand.
There was a light tug on the cuff as Gen had already begun to wander slightly until the binds went taut to keep him near Michael. Michael knew that he could just deflate his arm and slip loose of the shackles, but firstly that wasn't the point of the exercise and secondly it was directly against the rules. If he freed himself it would only cause trouble for Gen as it would fail him immediately. Michael would have to endure for his sake. Michael didn't bring it up as he looked to Gen (more looked towards him as Michael's balloon head made it difficult to tell where he was actually looking).
"We need to start clearing the lower levels first before the water rises too high or the buildings collapse any further." Michael stated so they could work together towards the same goal. "Let's go."
Notes & Tags: Kurokami Gen | TLDR: Michael says they need to start clearing out the lower levels.

This guy was just raring to go, wasn’t he? Maybe there really was only air inside that head of his. All piss & vinegar, but not a single thought running through those veins, if he even had them. “Not so fast, newbie.” Pulling on his binding, Gen would bring his hand up to the side of his temple, pushing his index in on it. “You wanna' go in blind and waste the little time we have? What's your plan? Run around like headless chickens until we hear some poor sod screaming?” [break][break]
“『Third Eye』”[break][break]
Suddenly, a dozen veins appeared around the annoying one’s forehead, his brow furrowed. A horizontal line appeared on his temple. It sported a gross-looking shade of red, as if his skin had just been split. First a cut, then a gash. The veins traveled towards this morbid mutation. Then, it got bigger. Something was coming out of his head. [break][break]
“Open!”[break][break]
Then, the hole in his head grew to the size of a golf ball, revealing what lay inside. A single eye, but different from the pair resting just a few centimeters below. Its iris was of a cold metallic silver. At first, it damn near bulged out of the newly-formed socket, reflecting the great deal of pain behind the change, but it soon subsided. Without a second’s rest, it quickly traveled to every corner in its field of vision, scanning every inch of this disaster.[break][break]
Thanks to another incredible piece of tech by the school’s Foremost Scientific Mastermind, Gen was able to see past the limitations of his naked eye. Little golden blurs appeared all over his sight, depicting the exact location of every last actor in this play. “There’s fifteen people trapped in the area. Wait-” His head moved on a swivel, catching something unusual. A massive metallic box. Realistically speaking, that meant one thing. “Scratch that, there’s eighteen, if we count the three stuck at the bank.” Given that 70% was a passing grade around these parts, then just rescuing thirteen would do. An unlucky number for the other five, to be sure. [break][break]
“Looking at the buildings, we should start over there.” His free hand pointed in the exact opposite direction from where Michael was going. There was a somewhat authoritative air to it. “There’s a higher chance those will collapse first.” He definitely wasn’t trying to make him look stupid or anything. Kurokami Gen would never risk the lives of these poor and perennially unemployed actors for such a petty reason.[break][break]

Ride to Glory
Michael hated how accurate Gen’s statement was. Michael hadn’t thought of how he would locate any of the people in need of rescue. He had been fully prepared to just charge in a burst open door after door while he looked for people. Before Michael could ask what he suggested then, Gen activated his quirk. Michael was rather astonished by the graphic display, after all he only knew the limited scope of Gen from the Armor Wars exposition. It was actually rather fascinating to see his third eye open; they both had mutation style quirk, a class of quirk that Michael knew all too well carried a stigma. Despite the versatility and fluidity that most mutant quirks had they usually came with a freakish connotation. It was an unfair bias against those that looked different and that kind of ostracization was likely a leading cause of so many mutants seemingly becoming villains. Perhaps this was why Gen acted the way he did, it was a defense mechanism from years of bigotry.
Michael beamed in awe at what Gen’s quirk was able to do. Being able to lock onto the people that they needed to help from just a stare was remarkable and exceptionally useful. Hearing that the building he pointed out was already structurally compromised, Michael was ready to spring into action. “Roger! Let’s go!” Michael started charging for the building only to be tugged back on as he couldn’t run at full speed with Gen. This would likely be a problem as every moment counter. Michael bent down slightly. “Get on my back, you can point me in the direction and we’ll clear out the building in no time.” Michael said seriously.
Michael was concerned he’d have to pick up Gen and fireman carry him if he was obstinate about Michael carrying him piggyback. It was the fastest way for them to move together and gave Michael clear vision of where Gen would guide him. If they worked together they would actually make a fantastic team, but Gen would need to get over working with Michael and Michael would need to think more before he acted.
Notes & Tags: Kurokami Gen | TLDR: Michael deferred to Gen’s quirk being able to locate where they needed to go first. To go faster as a team, Michael told Gen to get on his back for him to carry. If he refused, Michael would just fireman carry him since they were chained together and needed to be fast.

Ah, that was much better. This guy was finally learning his place in the pecking order. Not that he could tell what he was thinking with that plain face of his, but after a gnarly display like that, there were only two reactions you could expect, disgust or awe. From the tone of his voice and his offer to be his personal ferryman. Normally, Gen would’ve refused anything this idiot offered, but considering all the walking ahead of them, he thought twice about showcasing his arrogance. “Taxi!” He hopped onto the rubber man’s back, pushing his shoulder onto his spine(or where it should be) to try to make this as uncomfortable and demeaning as possible. “Need you to take me to that building over there!” And with that, we’re off to the races.[break][break]
Rivers of rain and rubbish coursed through the streets below. The smell of sewage permeated the air as the piping spilled onto the pavement. Anything that wasn’t nailed to the floor was already gone with the wind, and everything that was would soon follow. Looking over all this fake carnage and wasted assets, Gen turned to his enemy in hopes of passing the time. “You know, most people here would’ve slipped out of those cuffs by now.” [break][break]
Darkness. Ever since this disaster started, that was all this man knew. That, and the sound of the deluge hammering away at every surface. Drop by drop, it threatened to wear down this tower of steel, glass and concrete. Rubble and debris surrounded every inch of his world like a cage, save for a small pyramid of open space inside, where his body was trapped. And the first thing he heard was a single voice. It was muffled, but even that wasn’t enough to drown out how annoying it was. Engineered to cause as much psychic damage with every word. “-just saying, you’d be making a lot of your friends happy by throwing this exercise.” It was the furthest thing you wanted to hear from someone in this situation. “I’m just saying, these aren’t real hostages. You’re not actually letting anyone die. So what do you really lose by making me fail?”[break][break] [attr="class","curragebot"] Radiate, recognize one silent call as we all form one dark flame.

Legal and Fair
Michael wasn't sure what had caused Gen's turn of personality, but it was not only a relief, it was refreshing! Michael had wondered if most of Gen's angst was likely results from people ignoring him and he felt he needed to act recklessly in order to be noticed. So it was very reassuring to see him not only cooperating but actively contributing with the exercise. Michael of course didn't pick up on any of the domineering subtext Gen was projecting, Michael just assumed it to be confidence and an ignited sense of compassion for the people they had to help. Whatever the reasoning, Michael sprinted by Gen's direction while carrying the three-eyed man on his back, not really feeling any of the awkward attempts that Gen was trying to make this uncomfortable. Michael had just assumed that Gen was just struggling to hang on.
Michael didn't let the simulated wreckage or Gen's comments slow him down, if anything, it drove him to move faster. In fairness he likely could move much quicker and easier without Gen chained to him, but these were the rules. "Why? The rules were we had to do this while cuffed together. We have to follow the rules." Michael didn't realize how frustrating that line of true blue boy scout logic could be, it was the rules and to Michael following the rules the biggest difference between a hero and villain. Villains were still people that made the wrong choices because they felt they had to, Michael wanted to be a hero that proved that by obeying the laws and helping people that they would come out on the better side.
"It doesn't matter if this isn't real or that breaking the rules would be easier. We need to prove that it can be done legally and fairly. We need to set the example because we're heroes. We save everyone, no matter how hard it is or if some people don't like it. We have to put them before ourselves." Michael said determinedly. "These people may not be in real danger, but if we don't give it our all, its risking the lives of anyone we try to save in the future. They deserve our best efforts. Now, where are they?"
Notes & Tags: Kurokami Gen | TLDR: Michael carries Gen and defends following the rules because its what heroes do. They save people even though its not easy and give it their all in training for the people in the future that will need it for real.

Gen didn’t even need to point Michael to his next save, as beneath a veritable pile of rubble, the pair could barely hear a faint: “H-help” calling out to them. A man’s voice, strained and muffled.[break][break]
The almighty wielder of All for One cared little for him, instead choosing to continue on more pressing matters, like proving Michael wrong. “What if following the rules got someone hurt?” He yawned, in a manner too loud or over the top to be natural. The sound echoed around the halls of the ruined office they were standing in. “Better yet, what if the rules themselves are wrong? What if they only serve to benefit bad, bad people, like me?” All things considered, he seemed a little too proud to be included in that group.[break][break]
Without any enthusiasm, he began walking away from the rubble. Balloon boy here could stretch his limbs, from what he saw, so its not like he actually needed to be next to him at all times. He looked out the window, towards the veritable sea of rainwater and sewage flowing outside. Michael Faraday
The Struggle
Michael immediately started towards the rubble, only to be jerked back slightly when Gen started to walk away. Michael put up with Gen's devil's advocate routine, but this was a step too far. Michael yanked back against the binding, forcing Gen to turn back towards him.
"Kurokami-san! You're not a bad person! You can pretend to not care, get angry and do bad things, but that doesn't make you a bad person! It makes you a bad hero. I am here because I want to do good, I want to be a good hero. And deep down I think you're here to do the same. You act like you don't care, that you're above everyone, and maybe you are, but isn't that all the more reason to help?! You should use that greatness to help those who need it! I follow the rules because I trust in the people giving them, I believe that they are good heroes, I believe if I follow their guidance I can be too. You can choose not to trust them, but you need to trust that they are trying to make us good heroes, make you a good hero."
Michael didn't yell, but it was clear he was at the end of his rope. He desperately wanted Gen to be a hero and use his gifts for good, whatever they were. Michael turned to the rubble in the office, it appeared to be a collapsed ceiling. Michael tried to work his free arm underneath it, straining to try getting it in there deeply so he could get a good grip and inflate himself to lift it off, but with only one free arm, this wasn't working. As Michael strained to try lifting off the rubble, he continued to voice his frustration.
"You have the chance to be something even greater than yourself and you're throwing it away. Why?! Because it's too hard? It's too scary? It makes you too vulnerable?! People need your help and you're letting them get hurting because you won't even try! You came to this school to prove to everyone that doubted you, everyone that said you couldn't do it, just because you were too nice, or too soft, or your quirk wasn't strong enough! You have to show everyone that you can be a hero! You can save everyone because everyone deserves to be saved! That you are a good person!!!" Michael began shouting, egged on by the pain from exertion as he was failing to lift off the debris with one arm.
It was clear from his words that this wasn't just about Gen. Michael had been feeling that he wasn't making enough progress and it had hurt that Gen called him out for it. He was holding himself back because of his morals, he didn't want to compromise his ideals of empathy and justice just because he was too weak still to do it without causing harm or breaking the rules or law. But as he struggled against the obstacle with only one arm really doing any of the lifting while scolding Gen, all his frustrations bubbled to the surface and he had just began yelling at himself.
Notes & Tags: Kurokami Gen | TLDR: Michael tries to lift up some debris off someone while lecturing Gen, but as he struggles against it Michael starts to yell at himself through yelling at Gen.

Gen was all but thrown back towards the pyramid of rubble that had built up around the wall of this sorry office. The metal chafed against his slim little wrist. Though, the discomfort from his bindings paled in comparison to what he was about to feel. Not from any excruciating physical pain, but from a psychic source: having to sit through Michael’s outburst.[break][break]
I mean, wow, there was so much wrong in that speech, he didn’t even know where to begin.[break][break]
He was a bit stumped, not unlike Michael, who was withering in the vine trying to free one measly little actor down in the rubble. Seeing him struggle was nice, but it was hard for Gen to focus on that with just how stupid he was. Seriously, this guy was almost as stupid as he looked, and considering his face(and just his face) was a red latex balloon, that’s saying something. But you know the part he hated most, it wasn’t his face, his empty-headed optimism, or even his pathetic attempts at projection, but rather, that by some fluke of nature, he could empathize with that last part.[break][break]
“Well, good to know that’s why you’re here.” [break][break]
Suddenly, a pillar of ice would rise from the floor, pushing up a good degree of the rubble towards the roof and helping Michael free the hostage. It wouldn’t lift every rock covering him, Balloon Boy over here would still have to do his share of the rescuing. While he was dealing with that, Gen could probably take that time to assist him, maybe check on the civi, or, better yet, he could try to analyze the mountain-sized baggage his counterpart had thrown at him.[break][break]
“As for me, I didn’t sign up for a stupid reason like trying to “do good” or be something greater than myself”—he chuckled at the mere mention of those ideals—“I’m here to make a buttload money doing the easiest job in the world.” Despite the situation he was in, there was not so much as a hint of irony or dishonesty behind those words. “Because that’s the only thing that’s real in this business.”[break][break]
Not even bothering to give Michael or the other man a hint of a helping hand, he’d sit by a pile of recently displaced rubble, waiting for the former to finish worrying over the latter. [break][break]
“Truth? Justice? Peace? Honor? Duty? The greater good? Come on, none of that’s real.” Grind the universe to dust and sieve it through the finest sieve, and you’re not going to find a single atom of those ideals. “That’s just what we peddle to dumb kids can waste their parents’ money on toys and T-shirts.” However, the amount of money those fictions generate for greedy heroes like Gen? You don’t even need a microscope to see those. "And also, so that really dumb kids like you waste their lives becoming Hero Students.”[break][break]
[attr="class","curragebot"] TL;DR: Gen uses an ice wall to help Balloon Boy lift the rubble, then rants about how everything Michael believes in is fake and how that trust he has in other people is gonna' get him killed

Michael Faraday
The Release
Michael sighed out in frustration but then he did again. Gen was right, not about most of what he said, but enough that Michael sighed out the rest of his tension. Gen wasn't here for the same reasons Michael was, and it was unfair for him to put those kind of expectations onto him. Michael wasn't trying to make Gen a hero like himself, it would never work. No one could be like him, just like no one could be like Gen, so to expect the same kind of aspirations and motivations wasn't reasonable.
Letting that desire to have Gen be a hero like him was a relief, even more so as Gen's words had actually helped Michael too. Gen's desires to be a hero were selfish and motivated by money and recognition. Michael wanted to do this for other people. Perhaps Michael had been too self-driven as of late, where he had sought to prove himself capable of being a hero. But that had never been one of the core reasons why Michael wanted to be a hero. He just wanted to help people and keep them safe and happy. In his own diametrically opposed view on heroism, Gen actually helped Michael remember that. Michael wasn't here to help Gen become a better hero, Michael was here to be a hero with Gen.
Michael smiled softly under his latex head as he helped the person that Gen had lifted the rubble off of. It was actually very impressive how Gen managed to pull that off. Even with Gen's demeanor, there was a strong likelihood that he would be able to become quite the monetizable hero and accomplish everything he desired.
"Thanks! That quirk of yours is remarkable!" Michael thanked Gen genuinely despite the lackadaisical assistance. Michael didn't wait for direction, he picked up Gen and started carrying him ahead so Gen could point out the next target. "Where's the next person in need of help?"
Notes & Tags: Kurokami Gen | TLDR: Gen's words actually brought some peace of mind to Michael as he accepted Gen for who he is and remembered what was really important to himself.
