Still no sign of the Cartographer; Yaguro had already walked around a few times, pretending to be looking for the bathroom, and he hadn’t spotted anyone that matched the mystery man’s appearance. That meant that either he wasn’t working today, or that he worked a position that wasn’t customer facing; Likely a chef.
Thinking about it, it made sense that Cartographer didn’t work as a waiter, or some other job that was in constant contact with customers; He was a mute after all, and sign language was a rare skill. Time to dig a little deeper. Taking a sip out of his water, he picked a little bit at the white rice he had ordered; It was the cheapest thing he could order as to not be seen as a bum that wasn’t going to pay for any food. Thinking, he called his waiter to him.
“Hey, the rice here’s pretty good.” The vigilante commented, taking in another clump with his chopsticks. “You think you’d be able to get the cook out here? I know it seems odd to compliment a chef on something as simple as rice, but when they do something so simple so good, I feel like it needs compliments.” The waiter sighed at the mundane request. “Alright, I’ll see what I can do.” He muttered out, heading to the kitchen. Peering in and spotting Rayder, he motioned for him. In truth, the waiter didn’t know who had made the rice; He was just hoping their giant of a cook could get this ruffian out. “We have a customer out there who doesn’t exactly fit in with the crowd…Rayder, can you ‘talk’ to him?”

Yaguro Shamasu had met some very interesting characters these past few weeks; But none even came close to the absolute giant that called himself the Silent Cartographer; Making such a powerful ally didn’t happen every day, and the vigilante knew that he needed to know more; He already had a face, and with how insanely tall this guy was, it didn’t take long to spot the guy in a crowd.
After their first encounter, Yaguro had made sure to trail his fellow vigilante for a bit, just enough to know the general direction to sniff in; He quickly deduced that Tokyo would be the place to search.
In such a big city, rare quirks were abundant, plenty that made one stand above a crowd, but most of them were mutation types, and almost none of them looked like his target.
He’d had a few potential matches but they’d all led to dead ends; Yaguro had been starting to get desperate, thinking he’d never find the needle in the haystack. The vigilante was ready to start trailing anyone that even taller than average, until one day he had finally spotted him; A giant amongst men, large and hulking, and clearly the man he was looking for.
Another few days of investigation and Yaguro was certain, and after a bit more investigative work, he found himself at the entrance of a fancy dining establishment.
“Guess I know how you can afford your lifestyle then…” As the young man gazed up at the glowing sign and pondered, a rich couple shoved past him, giving him an annoyed look as they went inside.
Yaguro was certainly a fish out of water here, with his jeans and an old hoodie, compared to the much finer clothes the other restaurant patrons were wearing.
“Well, I got a shirt and shoes.”
Pushing the door open, Yaguro wondered what occupation the Cartographer had here. Was he a waiter? A bouncer? Was it a full on Batman situation where he owned the place?
“Table for one.” Yaguro told the main behind the counter as he pulled out a cigarette.
The host he was talking to looked at him like he’d just been asking to juggle chainsaws. Eyeing up this oddball customer, he eventually sighed, and grabbed a menu. “This way.” Stopping, he plucked the cigarette from the punk’s mouth. “And we do not smoke in this establishment.”
Walking through the high end facility, Yaguro got his fair share of looks from the other customers present. It was just after the lunch rush, so there were plenty of other diners still present, but the house wasn’t packed to the brim.
Being sat at a small table meant for two, Yaguro opened up his menu and started to peer through it.
“And now, I wait…”

And there it was; She was in. A large smirk came across Yaguro’s face along with her confirmation. Now he had someone on the inside; Now taking down the whole gang would be a simple matter. One less group of rough mindless trash could be taken off the streets. “Yaguro. Trust me, you’ve definitely made the right choice. I’ll be talking with my boss as soon as possible about a job; I’m almost certain he mentioned open spots for a few of the shifts, so you’ll likely get in quick.” Taking another look at the ferrets, Yaguro raised his eyebrows at the interested choice in names. “They’re cute in their own way; Like cats that got stretched out. Not sure if they’ll be allowed when you’re working though, but you can probably keep them in a pet carrier in the supply closet.” Taking a look at his phone, the punk noticed the time; It was closing hours, time to shut down the store for an hour while they waited for night shift to come take over. “I gotta close up.” Jotting his phone number down on a piece of paper, he handed it to Carmen. “I’ll text you simple locations and nothing more; That’s where you’ll meet up with our friend. He moves quickly, so just make sure to get wherever he needs you to be as quickly as you can.” Moving to the store’s entrance and opening the door, Yaguro ushered Carmen out. “Head home. Wait for a message.” Giving her a reassuring smile, the vigilante couldn’t be happier. This was going to be a wonderful start…

“Not sure, I’ve only ever seen him in his mask.” Yaguro answered. It was honest enough, for a dishonest answer. While surprised by her anger, Yaguro was glad to hear that Carmen seemed to hate her gang almost as much as he did; It meant she’d be far more likely to betray them. It sounded like she had a bad deal in life already, so hopefully she wouldn’t see much change in becoming a snitch.
Listening to Carmen talk more about her gang, Yaguro nodded along as if he was paying attention; In reality he already knew a lot of the broader picture of the gang underworld. “Yeah, I get it. Asking you to turn your back on your crew puts your life in a lot of danger; I’d say you’re striking a pretty fair bargain. I’ll get you what you need, hell if you want to pay for it yourself I can even see about getting you a job here.” This girl definitely knew how to barter for what she wanted. It was the smart play; Ask for something in return for risking your life. “My guy has been working the rounds on a lot of gangs; Yours is one of the most recent ones he has started to look into. If you’re serious about helping, I know he can guarantee your safety. Are you in?” Yaguro knew that he was putting Carmen in immense danger asking her to do this; But it didn’t matter. As long as he could take more scum off the streets, nothing else mattered.

Looking at Carmen’s wounds just gave Yaguro more resolve on what he needed to do; If these thugs were willing to do this to one of their own, that meant they were violent. The more violent a gang was, the more they needed to get busted up.
“Hang on.” Hopping over the counter and moseying to the medicine isle, Yaguro grabbed some antibiotic ointment and bandages, before heading back and opening the bottle. He wasn’t going to pay, but knew his boss wouldn’t miss this little.
Taking a look at the girls wounds, Yaguro started to apply some ointment to the first, before opening the package of bandages.
“This ‘helping’ business, I’ll be honest what my buddy does isn’t exactly legal; But it’s the right thing. He believes everyone should be free to use their quirks when they want, that nobody will commit crimes when every citizen is a superhero just waiting to stop them.” The punk tore off a piece of bandage with an audible rip, and started to wrap it around the first of Carmen’s arm wounds, smoke from his cigarette wafting into her face.
“And he’s right. Your shitty gang friends wouldn’t even think about so much as pickpocketing if they knew everyone was free to blast them with quirks; But until then he’s the best defense average people have got.” As he finished treating the rest of Carmen’s wounds, Yaguro took his cigarette out of his mouth and put it out on the counter, before flicking it into a trash bin.
“He’s a good person, he’ll help you out; He just might need some of your help in return; I bet you probably know a lot about the underbelly of this world, and I know he’s been looking for someone to help him with that.”
Leaning over the counter, Yaguro quickly grabbed a package of beef jerky from a hanger and tossed it to the girl.
“If you’re not interested I get it, but if you’re willing to help, he can make sure what happened to you won’t happen to anyone else.”

She was far worse off than Yaguro had initially thought; Having to scrounge for food like this meant her parents weren’t exactly taking good care of her. “Hey, its fine, I’ve got it covered. You’re probably also going to need something for those wounds to make sure they don’t get infected.”
Not even thinking, Yaguro grabbed a cigarette from his pack and handed it to Carmen, just as one of her ferrets started to sniff him. Seems like it recognized his scent, likely from when it met him before; Thankfully its owner didn’t recognize him, or things may get complicated.
Pulling out a chair from behind the counter, Yaguro set it out next to his and motioned for Carmen to come and sit with him. “You look like you need help and I’m in the business of helping people. I can tell what happened to you was gang violence, and I have a friend that specializes in that field; He’s not a cop, but he can get shit done.” The vigilante hoped he wasn’t coming on too strong, and prayed that Carmen thought he was just intuitive, and didn’t really know what was going on. With any luck, he could use her to get to her gang, and possibly get his own guy, or girl, on the inside. “I can get some like, jerky or something for your weasels, not exactly sure what they eat.” He offered. Ferrets weren’t a very common animal, but Yaguro recalled reading somewhere that they ate meat.

Night shift; Usually not a soul for miles around, let alone in the store. Yaguro was currently in the middle of a cigarette; Thankfully his boss wasn’t on the clock tonight, so he could easily hide any trace of smoking on the job before he got in the next day. If any customers complained, they could bite it.
The vigilante was in his normal, slouched over position behind the register just sifting through various news articles on his phone, hardly paying attention to any single one, rather just flipping through them at random. When the bell to the door rang, indicating a customer had walked in, Yaguro looked up, and was about to put his eyes right back on his phone, when he recognized the customer; Not a common occurrence.
A teen girl, covered in bruises; He knew he recognized the face from somewhere, and the ferrets confirmed it. He knew this girl, stopped her gang a while back and talked with her a bit. From what he remembered, she wasn’t the criminal type, and told him that her crew would punish her for being a coward in battle. Judging from her injuries, they weren’t kidding. “Hey, kid!” Yaguro called out, putting his phone away for once. Just as he was thinking of greeting her like he knew her, he remembered she’d only ever seen him in a helmet; Best to not reveal his identity if he didn’t need to, but he still felt like trying to get something out of her. “Hey, you alright? Those wounds look pretty bad.”

Research, research, research…Worst part of the job, but a part that Yaguro was admittedly neglecting. It’d been so long in the slammer he’d forgotten his fundamentals… But who was this guy to call him out on it?
Watching as the stone pillars retracted, Yaguro’s eyes widened as he saw the bodies of the three gangsters he thought had been crushed into a pulp. Was it all an illusion, courtesy of a quirk? Or did Occham’s powers run deeper than he thought? Fear turned to confusion as he examined Cue Ball’s groaning, barely conscious form.
“So…Did you actually kill those guys and bring them back to life like some sort of hell bound messiah…Or are you more of a ‘poofy poofy hat trick’ magician sort?” Yaguro asked as he took the newly repaired phone in his hand and ran a finger through its flawless sheen. “In any case, we probably do want to get out of here.” Moving through the door to the backroom, Yaguro walked back the three unconscious Eight-Os, tapping one with his foot to make sure they were really there, not just a mirage. Kicking open the back door, Yaguro checked the back alley, making sure the coast was clear, and motioned for Occham to follow him. Should he be accompanied, he’d take the privacy to confront his accomplice a bit. “Ok, if we’re working together, you got to tell me what you did back there, and, more importantly, who you’re working for. If you keep helping me take on shit eating gangs like that, I’ll gladly join whatever payroll you’re offering.”

Yaguro took his phone out and checked the ping. Opening the message, he was immediately grateful to have Rayder’s words easily saved through text messages. The phone number was odd, definitely not a local one; Just another piece of his new partner to investigate. As for an alibi, the vigilante struggled to think of a good one. “Maybe we can say we’re friends from work, depending on your occupation. Or we can say we met through a hobby, it doesn’t make much of a difference to me.”
Learning sign language would likely prove to be a struggle, but surely, Yaguro figured, the basics wouldn’t be too hard to get down. “Yeah, yeah, I’ll start doing my homework. And I DO know how to tend to my own injuries, I’ve been doing this a while. I’ll make sure to keep messaging brief, like I usually do. This probably goes without saying, but keep a good lock on your phone; The last thing we need is getting busted from text messages.” Watching Rayder take his leave, Yaguro put his phone back in his pocket, and turned back to head to his apartment; He had accomplished plenty today, and didn’t feel like staying out much later. Knocking out a couple goons and saving an innocent victim was plenty of action for the night.
“What a mysterious guy; It’ll take me a while to figure out everything about him.” Moving towards the fire escape, Yaguro started making his way down.
“A week, maybe two even…I think I’ll get to know you real well, Silent Cartographer…”

Yaguro growled at Occham’s critism of him. “Hey, the last time I tangoed with the Eight-O’s the only tough one in the bunch was Razerback! I guess they hired more muscle since!” The last time he’d had encounters with the Eight-O’s was before he was sent to prison, around a year ago. “Guess a lot can change in a couple months…”
What happened next was horrifying. Cue Ball’s three backup members were killed instantly; Yaguro almost felt bad; The Eight O’s were mostly troubled teens and young adults; And now these three were blood stains on the ceiling. The big man himself didn’t fare much better, being reduced to a bruise covered lump on the floor. The vigilante was thankful he was wearing a helmet, since he didn’t his new potential employer to see the absolute terror on his face. For a second he glanced at his bat, which had been rematerialized by Occham; Was it going to suddenly explode on him, or smash him into the wall?
No, this monster would’ve killed him already if he wanted to…Right? Getting up, Yaguro moved over to Cue Ball. It was hard to look at the overweight man, clearly enduring the worst pain of his life. “Tell us where Razerback is and we’ll let you go. Simple as that.” Yaguro kept his threat short, not wanting a terrified voice crack to surface. “It hurts! It fucking hurts!” Was the only response he got. “You want it to stop hurting? Start talking.” Through gritted teeth, Cue Ball finally responded. “Phone! Side pocket! We’re all in a group text! Make it fucking stop!” Yaguro reached down, and grabbed Cue Ball’s phone quickly, not wanting to be in any more contact than he needed to be; If that crazy quirk was contagious, he didn’t want to test it. “Alright, we got what we came for, I got someone who can hack into this.” The phone was cracked all over, but likely from years of abuse and not the recent altercation. “You can release him now, and we can go somewhere more private to talk. That work?”
Yaguro wasn’t above killing. He tried to avoid it usually but was fine wasting people that deserved. But this? This looked hellish, and he didn’t want to watch anymore. “Fire department should be here soon anyway.”

It seemed like an eternity waiting for Rayder to accept his hand. Just staring it at, Yaguro wondered what was going through the giant's mind; Why would he have second thoughts now? He had agreed to all of his terms after all. Just as the vigilante was ready to pull his hand back and make sure the Silent Cartographer hadn’t gone brain dead, their hands met, and the deal was struck. This was perfect; While Yaguro was already a capable fighter, having this gargantuan beast at his side would make him unstoppable. While he would still need to investigate him further to verify that this partnership would be wholly beneficial, having someone like this on your side of the ring was good.
Taking Rayder’s next paper, Yaguro read it over, and motioned to get the pencil from him. “I’ll give you my phone number; My friend modded it so it doesn’t have any tracking crap on it, whether its from corporations trying to sell me ads or something more serious. If you have a phone too I’d look into doing the same. From there I can message you with a few good meet up spots, I don’t exactly have a secret lair.” Assuming his fellow vigilante would give him his writing utensil, Yaguro would jot down his phone number and hand it back to him. “I don’t go out as often as you may think, mostly every third night or so, or whenever theres activity that needs attention, but if you need anything until then just message me.”

Well that was an interesting parlor trick; But it made having to find his bat again later easier.
Inside the bar, Yaguro took note of Occham’s words. It wasn’t his most thought out plan, and could use just a tiny bit of extra planning. “Hm. Yeah, maybe you’re right. Having to fight through an entire bar full of goons isn’t that smart.” As their drinks came to them, Yaguro quickly downed his, then started to reach inside of his hoodie. “I think I’ll even it up a bit.” Feeling around until he found the trigger of his handgun, he discretely started to aim it upwards. Hidden in sound by loud music and view with his clothing, he fired a round off at the ceiling, specifically right next to the fire alarm. Grazing the device was enough to set it off, and a loud blaring alarm replaced the rock music filling the place. As soon as the sprinklers started to go off, most of the bar patrons simply bolted for the exit, not wanting to stay in a potentially dangerous situation, and not bothering to question where the fire was, if any. Leaping off his barstool, Yaguro started to make his way towards the bouncer to the backroom; The guy seemed disoriented, confused as to whether to abandon his post. Just as he was about to open the door to the back, presumably to regroup with his gang, a fist flew in his face, followed by another; A final kick sent the unfortunate Eight-O through the door, landing at the feet of a fatter man, bald and wearing an adorned jean jacket.
Cue Ball looked down at his unconscious cohort, one hand covering his eyes from the spray of water above. His gaze became fixated on the vigilante responsible, and a visceral rage filled his body. “Who the FUCK are you?” Snapping his fingers, the three other Eight-Os in the room started to crack knuckles and draw weapons, already enraged at their night being ruined by the alarm.
“Bat.” Holding out his hand, his baseball bat materialized, and he quickly grabbed it and charged forward, crashing his weapon into the egg shaped man… Who proceeded to look unphased. “Bat? What kind of fucking response is that? I’ll tear your fucking head off!” Ducking his head down, Cue Ball headbutted Yaguro. Through the gangsters quirk, Yaguro flew farther than he would have normally, almost as if he got hit several times in a row, and the momentum built up.
Crashing into the bar and breaking several expensive bottles of gin, Yaguro picked himself back up, and opted to swap to his handgun, opening fire on the gang members. While the lower ranking members took cover, Cue Ball just let his head take the brunt of it, leaving little more than bruises each time. “Come on you fucking loser! I’ll show you who to mess with!” Emptying his clip and starting to reload, Yaguro peeked over at Occham. “Ok, he’s sturdier than I thought. If you got any ideas, I’d execute them now…” Motioning a thumb, he pointed out Cue Ball was now slowly starting to approach, kicking aside the remnants of the unhinged door on his way.
