Explosions went off. All this damn running and the explosions still went off. If there was any solace in Gabriel’s failure, it was the fact he saved a few lives. He reached a stand still as he looked back at the smoke in the air. The screams made their way to him and even if he had the power to, would he go back? He looked at the bomb in his arms. Was it worth the risk? Gabriel pulled out his phone. The event was to be broadcast. Maybe he could find it online and catch a glimpse of what happened. Maybe he could see the bastards responsible for this. But as he pulled up the stream all he saw was a woman mouth the word ‘boom’ as the broadcast came to an abrupt halt. He rewinded it. Paused on her face. Took a screenshot. And put the bomb back on the ground. It was a moment — a brief dip into the past, to see what had happened. And as the seance began… Gabriel stopped. He couldn’t do this. Not here. Tears formed in his eyes and he ran off, holding himself together as best he could. All of this work. And for what? What the hell did he actually accomplish? Nothing. Not a goddammned thing.

“I don’t think the hero shtick is for me,” Truth be told, even if he wanted to change the world, he knew that he couldn’t. Not as a hero. He had tried. Even with all the adventures he had gone on during his UAU days, he always worked best behind a counter. Maybe he could make a little bird that flew around for him and gave people orders or something. Recon was always important, right? But he wouldn’t need his hero license for any of that, would he? And if he did, would he want the baggage that came with it? When it came down to it… would he step up? “I like being comfy behind a desk. Kick my feet up.” He put his arms behind his head, closed his eyes, and banged his elbow on a sign. “Ow.” Gabriel grumbled. Grabbing the imaging equipment he tinkered around with it, getting the gist of how this model operated. That’s the thing about machines. They’re like people. You can get any of them goin’ if you had the magic touch. Now all he had to do was pull a rabbit out of a hat, y’feel? “Alright, ready.” He paused. “Do we have a safeword by any chance?”

The behemoth turned around as the glob slammed into the back of his skull. He leaned over, almost tipping onto Gabriel. Recomposing himself, his one-track mind looked toward the tiny, hairy hero that had initiated their fight. He growled incoherently and sent their arm towards them in a wide, horizontal swing. “Yeah, get ‘em—” Gabriel stopped mid-cheer. The question dawned on him. “What’s your name by the way? I’m Chirp, the handsome bird.” He squinted. Not that this mysterious savior would be able to tell behind the mask. “I’d prefer e-bird, thank you very much.” The behemoth didn’t like that and threw a kick backward. Due to the awkward angle, when Chirp stumbled a few steps back, falling to the ground, he avoided the maneuver. I’ve got to stop talking so much. The heart and the tongue were divided. It’s like I’m asking for trouble.“So, uh…” He couldn’t help it. “Guessing you don’t wanna talk this out, buddy?” He scrambled to his feet. What could he actually do to help here? Was he really this useless?”

“So, it’s booby-trapped.” Gabriel grabbed the bomb from Shichiro. “You two can leave. I’m interested in saving lives, not taking them.” He turned to Kamiya. “But if you stop to take out your grievances on my friend here, then you’re gonna get caught in the explosion.” It’s not a real threat — there isn’t anything he can do if they killed Shichiro on the way out. If he was successful he could only try to catch up and turn him in to the police. But with his life at risk, would he even risk taking out another? It seemed like he had something to live for, after all. The man runs. Shichiro hesitates. “Go,” Gabriel needs to be alone. “I can’t cut a wire because it’s a trap. But I can cut the signal so it never gets detonated. And considering the fact things could go wrong, there probably isn’t a timer on this. If there is, then its one that disables the bomb after not having a signal for whatever amount of time. It’s a gamble. One in my favor. But if it’s not, then we need someone to warn everyone else, got it?” A heavy sigh. “You’re still on the job… now go.” When left alone, he’d get to work. To make a signal jammer he’d have to take apart his Polaroid gun and the electronics in his mask. It’d be a hodgepodge of equipment that might give him the result he wanted. Still, even though he was confident in his skillset — this was just like a movie, after all — being under real, tangible pressure was killer. His hands shook. His mouth was dry. He could hear his heart in his ears. He didn’t realize how hard he slammed the device into the bomb when he finished. Hell, it might have blown up on contact alone. Gabe winced. It didn’t blow. He put his warped, mask back on, and shoved the rest of the gadgets and gizmos in his pockets, and started running in the opposite direction. If the jammer doesn’t work, then maybe there’s a range limit, too. Desperate times…

My history… Did she know? It wouldn’t surprise him if she did considering her reputation. And even if she did, she hadn’t turned him in for a reason. Gabriel thought her a by-the-book type. If she wasn’t, then he’d have to be on his toes. He had been banking on her predictability to create a false history in case he was ever pressed for charges. “We only almost decapitated one person. And that’s because the crew almost dropped one of my most expensive cameras.” A feigned, false confession. Hiding the faux-defensiveness with humor to sell the bit. It might not have mattered. But he wasn’t selling his soul that easily. “But that makes sense. Just don’t steal my designs. I’ll sue.” He offered a wink back. “I’m not the type to be an aggressor.” Gabriel went into this field because his failed stints as a vigilante. He had a mind that could change the world — even without his quirk — but he did not have the physical prowess or skill to be a hero. Not yet, anyway. “I love being protected.” Gabriel lets out a deep breath. This is his first, real mission with Iphi. And there was only so much he could contribute here. He had already made a good first impression. Here’s to exceeding the expectations he had set.

“Okay, if you insist,” It was too easy to press Jun’s buttons. Gabe didn’t want to walk her home. He wanted to get back to the hustle and bustle of the world. More importantly, he wanted to avoid situations that might reveal the mask he was hiding underneath his baggy jacket. “But I’m sure your mother would love me. Older women always do.” Final button to push before they went off on their separate ways. And even though he wanted to redeem himself in the night, he stumbled upon nothing when he reached his first yawn. He’d make his way home, too. There’s always something to work on. For now, he’d redirect his attention to writing and editing the script for his next project: The life and times of the most handsomest bird ever. Wordy title but it was a work in progress! “They really don’t make art like this anymore,” He muttered to himself.

He loves drama, banter, and being the most unserious person imaginable. Deflection is one of his core tenants. Gabe intentionally treats things with a certain joviality to undermine people's attempts at getting to know him, being vulnerable, or otherwise riling them up. Kill them with kindness in the most annoying way possible.
Plus, he never grew out of the 'knows everything at 15' disease. Symptoms include pretentiousness, undue stubbornness, an unjustified ego, and a penchant for looking down on others with different perspectives. Give him a creative outlet and he thinks of himself as the next Scorsese. His magnum opus will finish the world... if he ever gets started on the damn thing. Constantly distracted by other, smaller projects and the overwhelming pressure of living up to his own expectations, he's hesitant to get started. And like hell, he'll be honest about it.

“Full reign?” Gabriel rubbed his chin. There were a lot of projects on his mind, most of which involved his films. After graduating from UA, he found it difficult to focus on one project over another. He normally reinforced his projects through the environment. This lab was for this, that lab was for that — and his room is where he made his glasses, and mask, and reviewed footage from the streets. There were still some limitations, of course. He couldn’t compromise himself. If word got out of his illegal adventures, then it’d be impossible to avoid the consequences. Especially working for this agency. But that was part of the gambit — work at a detective agency to cover your tracks. Muddy the timelines… all that fun. “I did need some extra storage space…” He muttered to himself. “Nittosystems? How’d you get that connect?” Iphip’s resourcefulness impressed him the most. She had a knack for all kinds of things, but her ability to access people was something he never got the hang of. Apparently, he was ‘annoying.’ Gabriel preferred endearing and handsome but whatever. He steps into the passenger seat and sets up his camera, purposely avoiding Iphi. It’ll catch the car’s point of view as they drive to the location. If they were ambushed for whatever reason, then Gabe would have all the evidence he needs. “By the way,” Gabe tested the waters. “I can like… punch people in self-defense, right? On the off-chance, you can’t protect me? Pleading emoji?” Yes, he said that aloud.

He could only attempt to find out the rest of their plans. What was the point of this? What were they ultimately after? “What the hell are you all really after?” Gabriel had no idea who he was allegedly with. He hoped the ‘really’ would give him enough plausible deniability to give him wiggle room. This was risky enough as is. Gabriel ignored the man’s question. He was in control here, not this self-sacrificial lamb. I’m too pretty to die.That’s when Shichiro arrived. “Good job,” Gabe said, quick on his feet. “Just as planned.” Oh, shit. They’re safe. My bluff worked out. OH, SHIT! THE BOMB IS HERE? IS IT STILL ACTIVE? OH GOD! “You’re willing to die for what you believe in, but are you willing to die for nothing?” Another gambit. Please for the love of god work. “Disable the bomb and I’ll let you live. It’s the one chance you’ve got. Take it before I squeeze the damn trigger.” Those acting lessons were paying off… hopefully!
