"Yes, these are clock parts. My mother used to be a famous clock-smith."
The name of her mother, Helen Lovechild nee Zamenhof, was fairly known in small circles of specialists. From time to time, they even visited her in their little apartment. Offering jobs, orders, expensive contracts. The woman denied them all, though. Which was a shame, in Marlene's opinion. She only wished the best for her creator.
"A pleasure to meet you, Morgan."
The automaton then fell silent, letting this Morgan girl work. The incision was made, letting the skin be removed, and demonstrate some of the inner workings of her arm. She could see pistons, each moving whenever she moved a finger. Kind of like in that old movie about machines exterminating humanity. They wore skin-suits of grown flesh and blood. Marlene did not have that. Though remarkably lifelike from the outside, upon touching it, one could easily tell the material.
But there was another thing.
The surface plating. One could tell it was made for protection. Military-grade steel, practically, or the next best thing found in the commercial market. Meant to withstand punishment. One could guess the force of the blow Marlene had to take to actually end up being damaged. When the incision reached the part where it would help access the elbow, though, and the skin was removed to the sides, a kind of a yellow glow poured out of the incision. It was whimsical, almost, it made the immediate area on the table a bit brighter. And it traveled from the 'wound', in whispy strands, around the table. Seeking to touch the scalpel, and the various bits and pieces around the table, lifting and putting them down.
As if a curious creature, looking for something.

Bap.
Marlene got bapped with a book! The motion made her eye the book she was bapped with, trying to determine the purpose of that gesture. Was it a way to show that one was not insecure or shy? Was it something humans did often? But at the same time, was it not considered an invasion of one's space? So many questions. Marlene read about these things in a psychology book, and could not make heads or tails with it. Where was the line when something endearing became an insult? Or the other way around? Thinking about it almost made Marlene miss being called cute. Almost.
"Thank you. You are very kind." - the automaton girl said, as her eyes went up and down over his body, trying to find something to compliment. It was how things worked, was it not? Something about treating others, how they treated you. His hair style was what attracted attention first. Though, it looked like that of her aunt's. No, that won't do. She knew that compliments differed by gender. Calling a boy or a girl pretty, for example, prompted different reactions. After a little pause, she added: "You are also very sturdy." - she complimented the fellow on not falling over, when running into her. Sturdiness was a good quality in a male, correct?
"My name is Marlene Lovechild. I am a first-year student here. What is it that you are reading?" - the automaton girl asked, after she introduced herself, as was expected of her. It was much easier when people voiced what they expected of her, rather than have her guess. She stood still, when Zenkai brought himself down to her height level, and brushed a lock of her hair away. He'd feel that it felt artificial. Plastic of some kind. She did not pull away, lacking the instinct to do so. However, she brought the book she held to the side of his face.
Bap.

Glorious success!
A helpful person was acquired. Now all Marlene had to do was sit tight and let the master of repairs do repairs for her. Hopefully, she would be proficient enough with it that mother would not need to be bothered with fixing her up. She did not want to disappoint her creator any more so than she already did, and taking damage in a training exercise would surely add to her ire. A barely noticeable shadow of worry crossed Marlene's face, as she thought of it.
But when the green-haired girl came over, and told her what to do, the train of thought focused on the Now. Marlene was very good at following what she was told to do.
"Very well. You can perform the incisions yourself." - she said, putting the scalpel down, with its handle towards the person. The glasses-wearing girl asked for information, and the automaton girl would provide.
"My name is Marlene Lovechild. I am a year one student at UAU. The damaged parts are as follows: Great wheel, 38 mm., Secondary wheel, 24 mm., Cannon pinion 20 mm, type 5, mainspring..." - Marlene listed out a number of components, totaling 20. There was an oddity about them, though. None of these were robotic parts, cybernetic in any way or measure. These were ... parts of clockwork mechanisms. Some of these Morgan might even recognize if she had ever gotten her hands on a grandfather's clock. After having listed off the parts, the automaton girl finished, on an opened note:
"I do not have the blueprints with me on hand. It is considered intellectual property of my mother. Thank you for your assistance, though." - she said, and an awkward silence followed. It was only broken by another question, from a curious machine:
"What is your name?"

Any other person would have gotten the hint.
Marlene, though, interpreted it literally. The girl she ran into did not reject her outright, saying "I cannot help you" or some such. Instead, she asked if she asked anyone else to help her out. To that, the machine shook her head, back and forth. "I have asked all the other people here. They are either too busy or unable to perform the repairs on my arm." - she nodded towards the damaged appendage in a sling. Her voice sounded neutral, though a finely-tuned ear would recognize the metal reverberations of a machine in distress.
And she interpreted the putting of a workbench between them, as a sign of willingness to help.
The automaton girl pulled a chair for herself, and sat, on the opposite side of the workbench. The chair creaked underneath the weight of 450 lbs being put upon them, but held. Marlene placed the parts and tools she had been carrying on the bench, on one side, and her arm - on the others. Removing the bandage and hiking her sleeve up, to expose the damaged elements. The silicone skin was torn in a few places, revealing metal plating underneath. The elbow joint looked mangled too, a few metal bits, springs, and cogs sticking out, or trying to turn, and getting themselves jammed even more.
"Can you take a look? If you cannot perform the repairs, I would appreciate advice, still. The school nurse could not help me out, much."
Marlene reached for a scalpel, to cut the silicone on her own arm. The demeanor, and general apathy towards having been harm told a tale.
That she was not quite human.

With the Babel tower of books having been dropped onto the floor, it behooved both of them to pick it up.
Marlene did not expect any assistance, but it was offered anyway. The giant fellow being eager to offer assistance. Marlene read a few comic books that started exactly like this. Usually the guy in those stuttered, blushed, and expressed other forms of flustration. This one did not. He noticed the contents, though. And even called her out for being a pervert of some kind or another. The automaton girl half-considered to do what people in those comics she read, did, and slap him across the aisle. Not because she was angry, but it seemed like a very personable thing to do. She did not. Instead, looking up at him, not a hint of blush on her pale face.
"No, it is not what I am here for." - Marlene said without a hint of embarrassment in her voice. Her tone was very neutral, unusually so. She put the pile of books on the table next to her.
"I seek to understand emotion, better. The librarian recommended me these books." - she nodded towards the pile, the top title being something corny like "In the Night Comes the Stranger". Her eyes shifted towards the book that Zenkai was reading. With how short she was compared to him, it was easy to see the title from down below. From it, Marlene made an educated guess on what it was about.
"Are you interested in the same subject?" - the girl asked curiously. "In one of the books I read, running into someone is how the story begins." - she said, pulling one of the books out and browsing through its pages.
"Your reaction is all wrong, though. You are supposed to blush and be embarrassed. Why do you not feel the need to?"
Such strange questions, and an equally odd train of thought. Yet she seemed genuine in her inquiries. Marlene tilted her head up, eyes unblinking. She waited for an answer.

Marlene thought nothing of the hand outstretched to her.
It was a friendly gesture, a sign that someone was unarmed. She knew not of a greedy and power-hungry intent behind it. So, she reached forward, and shook the hand of her strange new companion. Their hands would meet, and Thea would feel that Marlene's did not feel like a normal hand. The surface was slightly lukewarm and unnaturally soft, as though made of silicone. Underneath, however, was the unmistakable hardness of metal. But with the quirk primed to trigger upon contact, there was precious little to do, before its effects went live.
But one thing she would know for certain. The mind she was entering was not... human.
Or that of a living being, for that matter. It was closer to a computer, than to that of a human. And even that comparison was not entirely accurate. There were no electronics here. And yet somehow, this was still a mind. One that Thea could enter. But the conditions of her stay, or the distance of her reach were now ... unknown.
For the intruding mind, everything would go black.
And when she would open her eyes again, the scenery would have changed. The bustling cafeteria was gone. So were the noises and smells associated here. The predominant colors were gray. Dissipated light that came from everywhere or nowhere at the same time filled her vision. The place appeared to be a library of some kind. Shelves upon shelves of boxes with tapes in them, positioned in an orderly fashion, according to chronological timelines.
This place was unlike any mind Thea would get to experience. No chaos, no dazzling and fractured memories floating about as an organic brain tried to fish this or that out in a haphazard fashion. Everything was where it should be. Except for sounds, and colors, and shadows, and tastes... So... sterile.
But then, there was a voice. Coming from everywhere, and nowhere at the same time. A familiar one. One she heard before.
"Hello. Welcome to my memories. What is it that you are looking for?"
It was Marlene's voice. Her voice eerily neutral, echoing in these halls. And slightly... curious.

UAU was a place of many discoveries for Marlene.
A thing she discovered today was that she were not, in fact, invincible. Durable, sure, but not invulnerable. During a sparring practice, she was placed against a very strong student. The teachers knew Marlene was sturdy, did not feel pain, or fear for that matter. A perfect sparring partner. The student in question wailed on her, until he got tired. But, with enough force and determination, managed to break her elbow joint. After the class, Marlene saw the nurse. The woman could not do much, she was trained to deal with human injuries. Or... organic, anyway.
Which was why the automaton girl found herself where she was. In the UAU support labs, home of the support class students. She walked past some of them, her arm lifelessly hanging in an arm-sling, her eyes scanning the area for any familiar faces. A challenging task, when one is a new student. Of course, she could have always gone home, and asked her mother to do the maintenance. But... she did not want to bother mother with something like that.
Perhaps, instead, one of these friendly tinkerers would help out? The damage was not that extensive, just a few cogs to be replaced, surely...
"Excuse me, can you help me with something?"
Marlene asked one student, then another, and another. Some of them seemed flustered or bewildered by her request of assistance. None of them took a chance of "fixing" the odd student. Something about personal responsibility or a lack of experience. After a dozen inquiries or so, and a dozen of rejections, the automaton was slowly being convinced that she would have to perform maintenance on her own. She did not have much experience, but she had her quirk still. Maybe it would be enough. She went about gathering materials around the place. Cogs, springs, etcetera. Carrying a tray with some, to the workbench, in one hand, she had almost run into a tall girl. Or was it a boy? Hard to tell. The automaton stopped, as running into her would be like running into a 450-lbs safe. She looked over the new person with her unblinking glass eyes. She did not bother this one before, with her request. She would repeat it.
"Excuse me..."

Every Friday, starting several weeks ago, a strange girl visited the university's library.
She wore a very proper black and white dress, with white sleeves and a frilly shirt underneath. She was barely 5'3'' tall, but despite that, had a very heavy step. Her skin was pale, and her hands, cold. She spoke with an even, measured voice, with a bit of a reverb to it. The librarians learned her name, and why she was coming here every Friday. She requested books. Very odd ones too. Not science journals or textbooks. She sought after cheap romance novels. The seriousness with which these books were often requested made them giggle. But the girl appeared to be immune to their ridicule. With a sizeable stack of these books, she walked to the back of the library, and left it only when the place closed down.
Marlene visited this place for a purpose, indeed.
When she first showed up, she requested books that described human emotion. One of the librarians recommended her to read these books, as a joke. A joke the girl took literally. And so, every Friday, she showed up to read those. Hoping to catch a glimpse of how humans acted, and why. It was something she yearned to know. Her purpose depended on it. And so, she studied, from these ill-conceived, and unlikely sources. Today was no different. Having picked a stack of books, the girl walked past the bookshelves, into the reading part of the library. Today, however, an accident would occur. She saw a tall silhouette swerving out from behind a bookshelf far too late.
Impact. Flesh against... something hard. Bumping into Marlene was like bumping into a metal safe. She didn't even flinch. But the stack of books collapsed and fell down on the floor, and on the hapless person who ran into her. Some of them opened up, others remained closed. The titles or chapters of some of these were rather embarrassing. "It was a dark and glistening night..." Slowly, the girl looked up, assessing the person, with her unblinking gaze. It was rare for a person to remain standing, after running into her. Still, she needed to make sure.
"Hello. Are you alright?"
Marlene did not seem perturbed by the impact.

Someone came over.
Marlene's head tilted up to look at the person who decided to share a table with her. She had the look of a delinquent about herself - a stark contrast to what the automaton looked like. Where she was tidy, the other one was messy. Where one was polite, the other was bordering on the edge of rude. Not even asking for permission to share the table or saying hello. Only a statement of unfamiliarity. It would have bothered Marlene... if she could be bothered at all. Unable to get particularly upset, even if she wanted to.
"We have not met."
She stated, after scanning her memory for any similarities with this person. Past or present. Those that belonged to her, and others that were someone else's. There were none. A pity. Hopefully, this person would want to talk. Or even become a friend. It has been... increasingly difficult for Marlene to make any. People who used to know the original self were not so... keen on reconnecting.
She ate a spoonful of gruel, curiously watching the girl consume her food with all the manners of an animal.
"My name is Marlene. I am a first-year student at this academy. What is yours?" - she asked. - she asked. ‘Table conversations with strangers are a way to establish familiarity and rapport.’ – she thought. All while watching food fly about from the overly enthusiastic eating. ‘Does mother want me to behave this way?’ – she wondered, idly. A few droplets landed on her, prompting the machine to fetch a handkerchief and remove the droplets, before they could soak into the dress. ‘Doubtful.’

Clinking and clanking of dishes. Murmurs of dozens of conversations happening at once. An odd scrape of the chair against the tiled floor. Requests for food being made, and lines upon lines of students with trays. Scents of different foods everywhere. Cafeteria was a very loud and bustling place during the lunch hours. A social hub too, as students talked over the events of the day, be that the result of a spar, the upcoming test, a fight, or the length of a hot teacher’s skirt. Most of the tables and chairs were occupied, and the stragglers had to look for seats, or wait for someone else to finish their meal and leave.
Marlene wasn’t here for the food. She did not need it, much. The energy her mother pumped into her upon creation was enough for 100 years of autonomous operation. She was here for the socializing. To observe and engage. And just … do her best. The automaton girl ordered the cheapest and tasteless gruel that was being served today, and a glass of water. With that in her tray, she walked over to one table, then to the other, looking for a seat. People gave her odd looks. Probably because of the dress. In her black and white outfit, with white sleeves and collar, she looked more like a maid than a student. Too prim and too proper for the T-shirt-wearing crowd. But there were no spare seats for her to occupy. Marlene had to go back, way back, the furthest away, to find a corner table that was recently vacated.
“Louse.”
Whoever ate here was a slob – left food bits and crumbs everywhere, and spilled a drink over the table, too. Having fetched a few paper napkins, the automaton girl wiped it clean. She did not intend this mess to get onto her neat dress, which her mother gave her. Mother preferred cleanliness, too… Sitting down and tucking a napkin to her chin, Marlene placed the plate with gruel in front of herself. Then, gave a look towards the bustling crowd further away from her. ‘I came here to socialize at the cafeteria. But there is nobody to socialize with…’ – the automaton girl thought, a faint shadow of a crown crossing her features. She ate a spoonful of gruel. Wondering how it tasted like.
‘I should change seats, if nobody joins me…’ – the girl thought. A rubbery smile briefly appearing on her features, and disappearing just as quickly. Marlene had no reason to smile, in particular. It was just… practice. Her chair creaked a bit under her weight, making Marlene look down and check it, before returning to her meal. But while she checked it, someone may have come over.

Marlene did not expect to have ended up here.
But on her way through the hallway, a very nondescript student handed her a flyer, and said that many students are encouraged to participate in the interview. The automaton girl did not see these "many students" lining up next to the interview room, but assumed that it was a thing that all students had to do, eventually. She had some time, and there was no need to be in a hurry. And if humans did this, so did she need to participate. If she were to understand and replicate them better.
The girl walked inside. Very properly dressed, in a black-and-white dress that made her look like a maid of some kind. She walked over to the chair, giving the camera an odd, unblinking look. She sat very carefully, and supported the chair with her hands, to not make it creak against the floor, when approximately 450 pounds of weight descended on her. For a very petite-looking girl, Marlene was heavier than most. A secret she did not wish to expose to cameras. With a press of the button of the laptop, her interview would start.
1) What makes you unique?
Marlene read the first question out loud. She thought about it, for a moment. It was a question that baffled most people. The automaton, however, knew an answer to that straight away. It took her only a moment to consider it. The girl spoke in an even, neutral tone. As if taking a job interview. Her expression equally dispassionate. Looking into the camera with an unblinking gaze, she answered:
"There is only one Marlene Lovechild."
'That is alive, at least.' - she added, in her mind, before moving on to the next question.
2) What are some random, fun facts about you?
"Sometimes, I break pencils with my fingers. It happens on accident." - the machine shrugged a bit, imitating a human motion. It seemed appropriate for the question, and the situation.
3) What is something you want to learn or wish you were better at?
"I would like to be more personable, and understand how people act." - Marlene replied to this very personal question, earnestly. She did not hide her mission, or anything, really. It was hard to be embarrassed about something, if you could hardly feel embarrassment at all.
4) Do you know any good jokes? If so, what is it?
"I enjoy the sight of humans on their knees." - Marlene spoke, her tone cold and terrifying. A small smile appeared on her face, at the end. "That was a joke."
5) Have any pet peeves? If so, which comes to mind first?
This question made Marlene think. One could almost see her processing all of her memory up to this moment, to figure something out.
"I do not mind most things. But I appreciate neatness and tidiness."
6) What is your favorite place on Earth?
"My favorite place on Earth is my home. It is where my family resides."
7) Who are the special people in your life?
"My mother. I would not be here, without her."
8) What is something you are proud of?
The question made Marlene think again. She diligently scanned her memory for events that would fit the bill. A shadow of a frown crossed her face, as she looked back into the lens of the camera.
"Nothing."

Marlene is not a human, but an animated construct. As such, her personality is defined by her nature in many aspects. Logic and purpose govern most of her actions. Her purposes are dual - to be a hero, and to be the daughter her 'mother' wants her to be. Both bring her satisfaction, though it is much harder to achieve the second goal. The failure to do so is a source of constant stress for the machine.
In order to play her part as a human better, Marlene imitates many of their behaviors, and studies them from books and observations. As such, she is very good at identifying and imitating emotions. However, due to lacking the visceral knowledge of how these emotions feel, she tends to misinterpret the emotions identify, or imitate hers at inappropriate times.
That is not to say that she does not feel any emotions. There are faint traces of it, the source of which Marlene cannot identify. The one she 'felt' more often than others is anger at herself for disappointing her mother. However, forcing such emotions out of the mechanical girl is exceedingly difficult and requires repetitive aggravation. Such as repetitive failures on her part, for example. Observers also claim that Marlene's expressions, sometimes, can be described as melancholic, though there are no obvious reasons for feeling such.
Marlene is very industrious. She is usually found doing something, be that chores, studying, and reading. Humans are her favorite topic of interest, and literature she reads often describe one or several human emotions, strongly. She is also very fond of dancing and excels in them. However, while mechanically perfect, her dancing lacks a certain... soul.
The mechanical girl's views on society, heroism, and the world are exceedingly lawful. Utilitarian at heart, she does not fight for justice for the sake of justice or goodness of pure heart. She simply finds the order they protect as the system under which most individuals thrive and prosper. Marlene does not feel fear, or remorse, much, able and willing to put her existence in the line of duty. She does so because she must, not because she wants to.
Deep down, she realizes that one of the tasks she was made for is impossible. That fact slowly worms and scratches against the seemingly unshakable and machine-like resolve. Marlene will not stop doing it, despite a thousand failures. It is just that... humans do not need a reason to exist. Machines exist with a purpose. Realizing that the purpose you were made for is outside your reach is ... a whole other kind of terrifying. She wears shoes on a small heel, a shirt with a frilly front, and a black headband with two small flowers tucked into it. Her pace and stature are impeccable, yet her motions show inhuman angleness sometimes, being quirky, exaggerated, or two brusque, revealing her true nature. Marlene has a very heavy step, a monotone voice, and rarely blinks. [attr="class","body"] [attr="class","header2"]HISTORY My name is Marlene Lucretia Lovechild. This name belonged to my creator's daughter, who died, 4 years ago. She was 18 at the point of her death, and perished in a tragic accident during examination for attending the U.A Hero Academy. Her father, Emilian Lovechild, could not live through the tragedy, and took his life, exactly one year after the event. Helen Lovechild nee Zamenhof, was left alone, as a result, her family unit effectively destroyed. That is the reason she created me. My creator, my 'mother', has a quirk that allows her to animate objects by planting her energy into them. She runs a clockwork shop in Musutafu, Japan, and used her mechanical knowledge in order to craft my body. I was created in the facsimile of her deceased daughter. She implanted what she thinks are memories of her daughter, but they are not such. The memories I possess are recollections of Marlene, from a mother's perspective. An idealized figure, viewed as upon an old videotape. Muted and disconnected from any emotion I can feel. Once mother breathed 'life' into me, I took my position in the household as the replacement for her daughter. She never attempted to recreate her husband, as constructing me nearly bankrupted her. We now live in a small, 1-room apartment 2 blocks away from where the shop used to be. Mother was forced to sell her business and settle for an office job. Fortunately for her, I do not require much in terms of maintenance, and can 'feed' off of almost anything, from electricity to any kind and quality of organic material. I have been dutiful in my tasks. I attempted to reconnect with all of the friends the original Marlene used to have, but none of them showed a desire to become my friend, in turn. Aside from my household chores, I also practiced for the admission to the U.A. Academy, like the original used to. A few months ago, I successfully passed the tests. The examiners remembered the accident years before, and were very surprised to see a girl with the same name and the same face attempt again. I believe they were wary of another 'accident', because the practice tasks were exceedingly simple. Mother was very proud of my accomplishment. She spent the whole day with me, celebrating, and even buying me a new dress to wear to the Academy, along with certain tools of the trade. However, I learned enough about humans to notice a distinct lack of sincerity in the smile the woman was wearing. Her eyes seemed exceedingly still, whenever she looked at me. Although I am doing my best, I fail at being her daughter. And I think she knows it, too. [attr="class","body"] [attr="class","header2"]ITEMS

Being a machine of cogs and wheels, she is very resilient, does not need to breathe or eat, does not feel pain, and can endure elements that humans, or even electronics cannot, such as electrical jolts. She can also expend some of her own "life essense" and transfer it to other machines and mechanisms, allowing for repair, assembly, or disassembly of such, as well as a limited sentience for a short duration, enough to follow commands. QUIRK DRAWBACKS:While Marlene's body was built to withstand danger that killed her predecessor, it does not come without weaknesses to the construction. The first weakness comes from the material. Although her body is covered with a layer of soft silicon that doubles as skin, on the inside she is made of metal. Her weight is 450 lbs, which makes traversing shaky or unstable terrains a perilous task. She is likely to overload elevators or fall right through glass. Swimming across water and other similar substances is also an unlikely option. Metal is weak to powerful magnets. Construction-grade magnets are likely to pull her right in. Being an automaton means the inability to interface with electronic devices, scanners, and whatnot, like advanced androids do. She has to rely on communicating with such devices like humans would, and, at the moment, has no built-in systems or weapons to make her job easier. Any abilities that allow to take/siphon quirk energy from a construct are potentially dangerous to her. Without energy her consciousness is extinguished, and she becomes a lifeless mechanical puppet. Should her mother choose to spend another year putting energy back into Marlene, all of her memories, experiences, and whatever made her 'alive' would be gone. The being would be a different 'Marlene'. Finally, at present stage, Marlene is considered a 'fresh' construct, plagued with small motoric ticks that may be of minor to moderate inconvenience. A poor measurement of strength would result in a too tight of a handshake, all ill-measured movement of a hand would make a pencil snap. Walking too fast and bumping into someone might result in something broken... for them. Being a machine lends to a plethora of potential social disasters to happen. Given Marlene's durability and physical capabilities, she does not require the extra finesse to beat her foes to a bloody pulp. The fact that she has it makes the machine more dangerous.
