Ghouligan lifted his cue stick. With umbral hands, black miasma floating into the aether, he slammed against two more pool balls as the original set returned to him. They collided against chitin shells, fragmented carapace giving way to death as it swallowed them. These pool balls, too, found themselves in strange and unknown trajectories, defying the world's physics. Something rumbled beneath the ocean. These grunts were a prelude to something far more dangerous — waves swirled in the distance as the creature began to amass. Ghouligan had read reports on giant octopuses or four-legged sharks wreaking havoc after swarms ran through the beach. They came in waves, clearing the way for the ‘leader,’ if you can call them that. “I’m not a hero,” In moments like these, no one turns away help. But to establish their relationship, for what happens afterward, was vital. “Are you?” The beast emerges. Just like the news report said, a giant shark with four legs. What they omitted was the prehensile fins lined with teeth that seemed to belong to their jaw. Evolution was a bastard with a cruel sense of humor.

Momo was a mastermind. While Antoine played these childish, schoolyard games — an honest attempt at expressing his romantic interest — Momo rejected the notion. They had a date. This was the coward’s way out. And Momo was forcing him to own up to what he wanted. She demanded her externalize his desire into the world. Let the words flow from his heart, not his tongue. Momo valued authenticity over performance. What a woman. “You aren’t a waste of a wi—” He’s doing it again. When you’re a liar, for the fun of it no less, it’s hard not to rely on your quick wit and poetic inclination. He needed to speak less like Antoine and more like Ghouligan. Direct. By this point, she’s made her wishes. Even now, while testing him, she shows her true colors. Momo is kind, considerate, and all the things Antoine wishes he was. It’s so natural for her, too. “From the top.” He claps his hands. “We just met but I like how blue your eyes are. And how soft your hands are. And how you clapped them when you were excited.” He claps again. “I think we could be great friends. But there’s a part of me that thinks we could be more than friends.” A pause. It’s hard to tell if it’s an awkward one or not. Is a non-awkward pause possible when you’re giving a high school-level confession to a girl who genuinely thinks your last name is ‘Wall?’ Only god knows. “I want our date to be a more-than-friends date.” He says. “And we can see what happens?”

“It’s a date.” Whether he was accepting the date or parroting her words in disbelief, the manufactured dissonance between his heart and tongue melted away. Antoine does not believe in love at first sight. The simulacrum of his boss’ constant pestering finally subsided. Megumi’s words echoed for a moment before dying down. And Antoine accepted what was in front of him. Momo. The moment. Nothing else mattered. Antoine hadn’t realized they had been holding hands still until she released it. With it gone, it felt as though something was missing. His hands weren’t meant to be empty. His cue stick, the pool balls… they were close, but they weren’t the right fit. “Funny thing about that.” His hands quickly found themselves full. In one hand was the paper, another was the pen. And he started writing, blocking Momo’s view in the process. “I had a wish come true already, too.” Antoine steps out of the way and slides the paper toward her. On it, his wish, written in sloppy handwriting: a date with momo :-)

“I am nervous.” Don’t just… say it. Momo brought out his honesty. And he loved lying. It was the crux of banter, humor, socializing. Maybe it was the guilt from knocking her over. Maybe it was the gratitude from her guiding him to the wish. Maybe it was how Bernie wormed his way into Antoine’s mind. Maybe it was how soft her hands were. “Yeah, it’s an important wish.” He squeezed back. Instinct. “How many wishes do we have? If you’re gonna use wishes on my wishes, then I’m gonna use my wishes on your wishes.” Antoine spoke without thinking. “I mean… If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have any.” Good cover. Swear to god… if Bernie’s pranking me right now. Despite his paranoia, he vomited out words without a second thought. “If you’re my guide, I can take time off of work.” Antoine worked as much as he did because there was nothing better to do. As far as he could tell, he found something — someone — better to do. “Look… one of your wishes came true. I’m sure the rest will, too.” A pause. “Is this like a birthday wish? Can we share them or is that taboo?”

“I’m not.” Antoine scratched the back of his head. He remembered when he first arrived in the country and how his life had changed. What was meant to be a brief visit, an opportunity to reconnect with his brother, Emile, had diverged. Now he found himself working as security in a local, burger joint. Despite his chronic adventuring, he still knew nothing of the country. “I’ve been here… a few months? Spend most of my time working.” Unbeknownst to himself, Antoine had been staring. Momo’s blue eyes were impossible to ignore, but so was the way she eagerly smiled or clapped her hands together. Her energy was infectious and something bubbled inside of him. What is that?Momo offered her hand. Oh. His heart is pounding. It shouldn’t be. Bernie’s an idiot. A charismatic bastard at best. Antoine took it. “Lead the way.”

Oh, He smiles. She’s funny. It’s not often that people wholeheartedly lean into the bit. Momo was quick-witted in her own right, not fumbling over the opportunity presented. It felt natural — something Antoine had the luxury of stumbling into only on rare occasions. She bowed. Antoine followed suit. If you could call awkwardly leaning ‘moving an inch forward at most with stiff arms to the side of him’ a bow. He was done before Momo finished hers. “Solid is a good thing,” He paused, eyes glancing upward as he second-guessed himself. Being solid was why she fell onto the ground. But if he were any less, then they both might have. “I think?” A wish. Right. Truth be told, he had forgotten about the wish. Their interaction, as brief as it may be, provided him solace from the embarrassing gruntwork that Bernie sent him on. A quest to find his true love for reasons beyond him. No matter the explanation, Antoine didn’t understand Bernie’s motivations. It was never as simple as it seemed. Not with him. “Just Antoine is fine.” Antoine looked around a bit before returning his gaze to her. He found comfort in having someone to talk to — someone familiar. Not that you could call a stranger bumping into you someone familiar. Momo did, however, have that unspeakable thing. That Je ne sais quoi. They were strangers, but it didn’t feel like it. It was too easy. “But yeah, actually.” Sheepishly, he adds. “I just know don’t… how to?”

If there’s anything he had learned from watching decade-old American sitcom reruns, it was banter. His wit preceded him. There was an instinct to say something clever imbued in his DNA, an instinct dulled by the new language. His tongue had finally taken shape, understanding the nuances of the language with far more proficiency than one would have expected from him a week ago — even without the slug, sitting in the pit of his chest, translating the intention of every foreign sound that found its way pounding against his eardrum. Antoine barely felt the collision and was more taken aback when he heard a thud behind him. He turned around. And while he was on the back foot from being called ‘Mr. Wall,’ at least he wasn’t flat on his ass. “Mr. Wall is my father,” He offered a helping hand. “I’m Antoine.” He’d help Momo back to her feet and respond to her apology in kind. Even if the incident wasn’t his fault. Or anyone’s fault. Accidents happen. “No, no. It’s my bad. I shouldn’t have been standing…” Think. Think. “So… solidly?” Nailed it. “You okay?”

A woman of thought wouldn’t understand. The intelligent are cursed to think everything through — they weigh risk versus reward and make the ‘best’ decisions. Ghouligan understands a few things, but he’s not privy to the same machinations of the world. Even in his native tongue, there are concepts beyond him. Although, it’d be more accurate to say there are things he cares not for. He’s a man of belief, as deluded as they may be, and follows them with unwavering fidelity. Yamamoto was a series of circumstances. Antoine happened to be in Japan. He happened to catch wind of him. And he happened to find him at his most vulnerable. Antoine had done enough research to understand who they were and why they needed to be taken care of. Once that decision had been made, he was on the hunt. You make some moments. Others offer themselves to you. He took what he could get. “Sho was playing dumb — hiding something — then when you questioned his competence, he proved he wasn’t. At the cost of his story.” It tracked. Too well. Everyone has reasons for lying. At some point, they’d all keep something from one another. But as a first impression, Ghouligan wasn’t exactly ecstatic at the prospect. “If it was up to me, I’d confront him directly.” Being part of a team meant giving up your autonomy for the sake of others. It was unfamiliar territory, but he knew it was right. For now. “But I don’t think that’s your plan. So, what is?”

She thought it was a bait. Antoine had given an opening. And with her instincts, she deduced that someone of his caliber wouldn’t leave himself as open as he was without a contingency. She was wrong but for the right reasons. If this were a real battle, one where he was trying to kill her, then he would have a plethora of options. He would have had a preemptive counter-attack in the wings. It was a testament to her skill, but she did miss signs of his commitment. And her hesitation is what allowed him to improvise. He’d play into her hand, so he could see her potential. Without moving a muscle, swing still in motion, the pool balls changed trajectory. They bounced from all directions and immediately targeted where she was. She’d be limited in her escape options through the intentional gaps he left to limit her movement. It was a test of instinct. There was no right answer. Every avenue out of the situation had counterplay. What mattered was understanding her approach in a situation like this. What does she value? How good is her analysis? And what could he be missing from his?

“And that’s why you have to go to the Star Festival.” Bernard said with a clap of his hands. He stood up from the table with unfounded confidence. “Either that or you die alone.” “Then, I die alone.” “No one wants to die alone, kid.” A few steps later, he started massaging Antoine’s shoulders. “I know you think you can do everything by yourself. And you’re already making friends—” “Begrudgingly.” “And you’re begrudgingly making friends. So, why not add love to that very short to-do list?” “Because I’m not looking for love?” “Good!” Bernie takes a step back, pulling on Antoine’s chair. “When you’re looking, you’ll never find it.” “So, I shouldn’t go to the Star Festival. Because then I’d be looking for love and I won’t find it. Making it a moot point, yeah?” “You’re going because I told you to. And since you don’t want to go, you’ll definitely find the love of your life.” Bernie said with a shit-eating grin. He respected the attempt but Antoine was an amateur. “Try not to slug on anyone this time, yeah?” “I won’t slug.” Antoine’s blushing. “Promise?” “Promise.” Antoine grabs the ridge of his nose. “Can I go?” “That’s the spirit!” Bernie laughed. “Enjoy~” It’s not too long before he’s at the Star Festival. Yeah, he’s heard all about it. He knows about Vega and Altair. He’s learned to say ‘Milky Way’ in Japanese, too. But that doesn’t help with geography. Or the ability to find where the hell you make those wishes. And it definitely doesn’t help with knowing what he’s supposed to put on the paper in the first place. It’s either be here or have Bernie annoy him to death. That doesn’t mean he’s suddenly looking to find his soulmate. Then again, maybe he should. That’ll guarantee this is a waste of time, right?

When Ghouligan arrived, someone was tearing through dozens of crustaceans. Their hands ripped through their shells like butter. And there was no mistake in the way they fought that they didn’t need the help. The swarm was unending but none of them were of notable strength — if anything, the fight was a war of attrition. But Antoine came with a job. He was here to purify the ocean of its monsters. Once he was done, he’d alert Bernie so that he could send in the cleanup crew to scavenge like the vultures they were. Novelty seafood menu? Who the hell would eat this? Pool balls would fly by Farrin’s head, a single ball taking down a row of these creatures as it ricocheted from one skull to the next. The path was crooked and twisted and even a civilian could see physics breaking before them. “How long have you been fighting?” Information was tantamount. There were other questions he wanted to ask, too. Did this man consider these monsters as monsters or as people? Were they okay with killing? Or was this the same degree of separation that allowed the self-righteous to eat Bernie’s Fat American Burger? With the right answers, he might find the network with another ally. Unless, of course, they were a hero.

“There’s more to our network than just the technology behind it,” Ghouligan pushed through the awkward tension. Even if he had the knowledge to reciprocate, even if he reciprocated, the act of giving gifts was strange to him. Cognitively, it made sense. But his heart didn’t understand. Gifts were, as well-meaning as they are, temporary. “We need a way to identify one another. We’re going to independently expand the network. And some people will infiltrate. The more barriers to entry there are, the safer we are.” Antoine passed over some sketched-out references, courtesy of Dion. “These are some symbols we can use in the wild to identify whether an area is safe or compromised. You’re going to see different symbols all the way from hostile heroes to friendly criminals.” Ghouligan said. “He’s done some of the work but the rest is up to us. Right now, we need to come up with seasonal phrases to verify one another. You up for that?” Right, he almost forgot. “Side effect of using my quirk. I turn into the Ghouligan you’re familiar with. But I don’t think you’re going to hurt me, are you?” A genuine question. He didn’t need to transform to kill her, but this was an act of trust. If, for whatever reason, she sought to betray him, then he’d follow through on his promise. He’d protect the rest of the network.

“After Hideo?” Antoine’s heard the name in passing. Bernie likes to catch him up on what’s happening in Japan and has recently had a dinner date with the politician. There were a few more involved, too. He wasn’t privy to the details — Bernie didn’t focus on what they were doing, just the people he was meeting with — but he knew that if Hideo was a target, then the others likely were, too. Or worse, one of them might have been targeting the rest. Less competition and all that jazz. With Bernie’s ship in the bay, too, it was lookin’ like a twofer. A noble effort, but you would think people accounted for security. Then again, this guy didn’t look like a pushover. Seemed the insane type. “I’m after people who are after Hideo.” Antoine moved away from the pillar. Anyone touching it would realize they couldn’t strip themselves from it. They were stuck. He pulled out his cue stick, tossed a few, now floating pool balls into the air, and aimed at the man’s skull. “But everyone deserves a second chance,” Antoine said. “Walk away. Give up your life of crime. And you get to live.”

She laughed. They laughed. It was admittedly unexpected. Antoine would have thought himself on the receiving end of some grandiose, moral judgment. It’s what he was most familiar with. Instead, Miss G accepted his lunacy — not that he would call it that — and offered him a challenge. But not before throwing a few insults his way. Like calling him an American. He’s never even held a gun. Then again, what were his pool balls if not oversized bullets? “My first toy was a pumpkin.” The implication was a stuffed animal in the shape of a pumpkin, but considering how he was perceived as a ‘freak,’ he wouldn’t be surprised if G took it literally. “What about Ronin?” Antoine had his own concerns. However, it had less to do with the validity of their identity and more with a potential broken promise. Antoine thought himself of taking anyone. If he couldn’t, he accepted the death that came with it. His only trepidation was making a promise to protect those in the room after inviting someone he might not be able to defeat. The swordsman. “Yeah, it felt off.” Antoine didn’t want to color their perspective. But the truth of the matter was his position as a foreigner hindered him. There were too many gaps in his knowledge that gave enough reasonable doubt to any inconsistencies in someone else’s narrative. What is and what isn’t common knowledge? “But I don’t know enough of what’s happening in Japan to pick it apart.”
