so, i think recruitment threads can be pretty boring if played straight. instead, i'm thinking we have another big group thread that leads into us splitting up and doing missions with one another. the group thread will be non-threatening and i'll establish the rules within it and then we concurrently create those missions so people can finish at their own pace.
this is just to see who isn't absolutely overwhelmed with threads atm and would be willing to make things work out. i'm thinking for the sake of ease/more dynamics we end up creating the threatening missions in groups of 3 if possible? up to yall!
check-in to see who is interested.
this includes all current members and upcoming/new members. it'll act as their official joining thread and all that ;D
tl;dr - create group thread, nonthreatening mission aim for the month after the thread is created - create threatening missions in groups of 3 to build rapport + officially induct new members - who is interested / not overwhelmed on threads rn? can be held off until we're all not drowning in event prompts!

Ghouligan knew better than to follow them into their turf — a counter-invasion would prove fruitful through preparation. Not only was he ignorant to the depths of the waters they came from, but he knew not of what awaited him. His thoughts were interrupted by the student’s unsurprising empathy. It was standard fair for the types who wished to become heroes in Japan. Unlike his home, there were cultural signifiers that reinforced this behavior, a kind of social reinforcement only applicable to countries given proper infrastructure. A shame that such a child would still stain themselves with the blood of an unknown enemy. “The name’s Ghouligan,” He said, unprompted. “I’d recommend you stay away from me. I have an unflattering reputation amongst the police.” Getting to his feet and putting away his arsenal, he turned to Farrin. “As a soon-to-be hero, I’d seriously consider introspection. What makes it okay to kill these creatures and not criminals?” He turned ready to walk off, but not without a few parting words. “Contrary to popular belief, you cannot walk the line,” Ghouligan said, unflinching. “You’re either a killer or you’re not.” He looked back one last time. “And you’ve already stained your hands.”

Off by a mile. While the student moved at incomprehensible speeds — which would make him a nigh impossible target for most people, even Ghouligan — his precision was lacking. There was a notable lack of finesse when it came to anything outside the range of his fists. While Antoine knew accuracy was a skill, he had been swept up in the boy’s talent, thinking he could do everything. But reality settled in with only moments to compensate for their shot. A wayward, unsteady blast that wreaked of compromise. There was no reason for Farrin to trust him except that he needed to trust him to succeed. A blast to the suffice would deal severe damage, but that would not suffice. They needed fatal. As with most creatures, the insides were weaker. Antoine moved his hand but the air remained as rigid and unmoving. Its face only inched upward as Ghouligan fell backward onto the ground and kicked upward as he fell, pushing himself off the shark’s chin as he realigned the shot. He skids on the sand like ice, regaining his grip after a few yards, taking a knee, and aiming at the monster… just in case. It wasn’t necessary. A hole through the neck left the damn thing nearly decapitated. The internal processes receive their final neurons from the brain until everything shuts down. Momentarily, it stood unphased, incapable of processing what happened. And by the time it did, it was over. The rest of the creatures fled back into the ocean.

“Guts.” Antoine extended a hand. Unlike the last time they met, he was in casual attire. As casual as it could get for him — meaning flesh, blood, and bone. While he still wore the mask, the only signifier he said who he was, he was unrecognizable. It was only when he lifted his phone and showed their messages that he confirmed who he was. “I get less attention this way.” He may not have wanted to reveal himself, but it was the nature of the cause. A mask was easy to slip on when he found himself in safer spaces. Otherwise, he’d be begging for attention. Especially in daylight. It wasn’t something he could risk. Not when this space was The Hummingbird’s. “I’ve reached out to a few people across Japan. I should say they reached out to me. We’re setting up safehouses and as far as I’m aware, you’ve already have a system in place.” He gave nods to the rest of the members as he spoke, acknowledging them, but sticking to business. “If you wouldn’t mind showing me around?”

“Stay here? I need glitter.” At this point, Antoine had been speaking to himself. Jun had gone to investigate the scene. If he thought it worth the hassle — it was likely a low-level criminal a rookie could stop at worst — then he would have snuck off and intervened as his alter ego. Instead, he picked up his phone and dialed. Ring ring ring. Ring ring ring. Click.“Go for Bernie.” “Hey… what’s 911’s number?” “110.” “Thanks.” “Did someone steal my glitter?” “They’re trying… I think?” “Well… grab some off the floor if you have to.” “Cheaper that way, yeah.” “Freer that way. Like America.” Click. He calls the authorities, puts away his phone, and follows suit. Call the cops? Sure. But he’s got to see what’s happening. Plus… the new mission: grab some free floor glitter. “What the hell is that?” Antoine pops up next to Jun. “Snotgun, yeah. But why?”

This wasn’t his first time here. The last time he visited Tokyo Bay, Antoine encountered a hero student from UAU. Despite how close he was to speaking to his brother, the reason he came to Japan in the first place, he hadn’t found a way to make contact — not without exposing his identity. He mulled over the thoughts as they were pushed beneath the surface and into the deep underbelly of his psyche. Much like the bay, he was tormented by monsters. Except his monsters weren’t warped crustaceans encroaching on land. Antoine dealt with grief and with loss and with longing. The last time he stepped foot on the beach he had confronted a giant, human-legged shark. Freaky. Without warning, Ghouligan popped up next to JoJo. As a black, umbral husk he was immediately eyed by the creature underneath, as it began to stir. Word must have spread. “You ready to take that down?” Twirling his pool stick and setting up his rack of cue balls, he slammed them against one another taking his first shot at the creature as it fled — a direct hit. Unfortunately, it only served to piss it off. Flee no more. “You can leave at any point.”

UAU. Antoine would keep his cards to his chest. This student had a chance to connect him with his brother, but there was the issue of revealing his identity. Never had he been so close yet unable to grasp what was in front of him. Worst were the distractions at play. If it’s any consolation, they’ll buy him some time. And buy him time they did. The shark was tough. Tougher than he initially presumed — a problem considering how accurate his assessments usually were. After a brief skirmish with the hero boy, he left with a few incendiary wounds and a chip on his shoulder. Even ablaze, he sought to conquer the territory. In the meanwhile, Antoine mowed down the chumps. While Farrin drew the aggro, they left themselves wide open for attack — but it wouldn’t last. Until the boss was taken down, they would continue like the undead, unthinking husks you’d find in horror films. “I have an idea.” He said. “I’ll make an opening. When I say shoot, shoot. Even if I’m in the way.” Now it was Farrin’s turn to hold off the grunts. Breaking from his distance, Antoine pushed off the ground and skidded atop the sand as if he were skating on ice. However, the movements weren’t graceful. They were direct and simple. A display was necessary. They swung their first limb, which slowed, giving Antoine ample time to reposition. Then it swung another and Antoine moved in a momentary burst of unrealistic speed. Not that it was too fast to comprehend, and not that he had gone any faster, but as if the world moved out of his way. The creature slammed their limbs into the ground and when they did, they were stuck. “Bite me.” Antoine offered his hand. The creature struck. And Antoine flipped it off. “ Bite me.Its large, ravenous maw stood there agape, chomping on an invisible force yet unable to make context with the finger dangling in its mouth. “Shoot!”

An arm burst out from behind his shoulder blades. Secret arms? Flesh manipulation? Regardless, there was a bullet headed straight for… The.. ax…. Axoolaw… the pokemon? The slug is supposed to be translating for me. Why the hell can it not say axololu— whatever. His frustration slowed his reactions. Had he acted instantly, he would have intercepted the bullet. Had he acted a moment after that, he could have increased the friction until it was immobile. And a moment after that, he would have stepped in the way himself. But he was too slow. The creature shreiks and lashes out in response. Antoine doesn’t have the time to think about the man’s response — something brought him back to the life of crime. This meant he took his chance and squandered. He left behind a life worth living for this. Antoine’s rage melted away. He was disappointed. He was disappointed in how little the man valued the world around. And he was disappointed in what he had to do. Chuck is free. For now. Antoine doesn’t have time to manage both him and a rampaging monster. Instead, he focuses his onslaught of pool balls on it. Unfortunately, he feels the wear on his weaponry. He’s been holding back his strength. The cue stick isn’t strong enough, the pool balls either. It takes more hits than he’d like for the monster to get subdued. A squish here, a splat there… eventually, it unravels. Viscera and entrails litter the floor. And Hideo’s door is left ajar. Chuck’s words meant nothing. As long as he walked the path he did, then Ghouligan would cut it short.

Unfortunate. From Ghouligan’s little experience with students, they were often rigid in their belief in the hero system, often idolizing those who sacrificed themselves to ensure the stability of the institution. Granted, he was wholeheartedly misinformed about the nature of students in Japan. Whether or not this assessment was accurate was entirely predicated on information from a less established country — a country where hero infrastructure was sorely lacking. Countries more like it. While they had hit a wall, he would still pry. There were uses for students other than belonging to The Undertow. Ghouligan believed in the system, even if he thought people like himself were necessary for society to function. However, his brother was at a hero school. Maybe they had crossed paths. “Which school?” Ghouligan said. “I’ve met a few hero students already.” He didn’t realize he wasn’t lying. The battle quickly escalated, leading to a shift in mentality. One of the benefits of fighting at a range was the safety it provided. But if his ally were to find himself in trouble, he might force himself into the mix — even if he didn’t like it. “I don’t have any high-power weaponry,” This was the unfortunate weakness in his arsenal, something he compensated for through attrition. But with their lack of numbers, and someone else at risk, it was best to put the ego aside. “If you do, then I can stall the grunts. If not, we’re gonna have to come up with another plan.” As the shark approached, it used its extra limbs to create violent waves that would slam down on the shore. The ground would rumble underneath them as the waves reached for them. Eventually, they’d swallow them both — they needed to act now.

Two factors guaranteed JoJo’s defeat. The first was when she decided to make this battle a single exchange. More often than not, asymmetrical information favored Ghouligan. With the ability to manipulate friction, he could give himself opportunities in microcosms of moments. While other marksman sought after cover, he sought over the open spaces — that was his cover. The second factor was when struck without the intention of killing. Ghouligan manipulated friction, but he was not impervious. There was a mental recoil. One akin to slamming a bat against the ground, a feat that tested your resilience. He spent years building up a resistance to the recoil, a side-effect of constant exposure. But you could not push him to his limit unless someone struck with every fiber of their being. Instead, JoJo unraveled. She would notice her strike slow and slow and slow until it was immobile. It wasn’t just her hair, either. It was the summation of all her moving parts — her body was locked in place, rigid. Everything except the afro-textured mane which shied away from his cue stick. Frictionless. Fortunately, he was merciful. He was not after revenge, only information. And as the cue stick tapped JoJo on the head with a light bonk, he marked himself victorious. “You pass.” Ghouligan disengaged and gave a wave goodbye as he stepped back en route. “I’ll be in touch.”

That was a… reaction. Antoine was speechless. He didn’t think a harmless compliment about a comically absurd shirt would inspire this response. Whatever the shirt meant, it must have been intentional. From what he could quickly deduce, they might have been dressed by a caretaker, one who had disappeared within the store. The explosion caught his attention. The timing was too perfect. Was this the fault of the caretaker? He brushed the thought aside. Life isn’t a book. But there is glitter. Everywhere. And it might be the type of glitter he’s looking for. He was shown a picture, and even has the reference on his phone, but the branding was important. Antoine had shown Bernie some alternatives and he told him that ‘they all look like shit.’ Antoine looked back at Jun, his composure returning. “I need to get some of that glitter. I’ll make sure never to talk to you again.” Beat. “ Sorry.”

The network was underway. The techies had made significant progress in their online forum, others had helped set up the foundational cryptolect, and a few suspicions were being investigated. Add in the ongoing recruitment and The Undertow was set for success. But the group could not live online. If they were to help one another, then resources were paramount. With his introduction, Guts had the most experience partaking in a community — something they alone offered to the group. Ghouligan knew little of The Hummingbirds, but after a few days of research, he was impressed by what they accomplished. They operated on a smaller scale, but they had somehow earned a reputation greater than the sum of their parts. Today was for introductions. Furthermore, today was the day they established some core safehouses for The Undertow. Guts knew the area and while they were both operatives in the network, Ghouligan knew better than to step on their toes. This was their territory. Beyond that, guidance was a must. There were no leaders here — everyone was on equal footing. But as the person who gathered the group, he thought it his responsibility to follow through on his promise. He offered a resource to his newfound allies. And he would give it to them.

For whatever reason, Bernie had a hankering for glitter. And, of course, Antoine was more than security at this point in their relationship. He was an errand boy. Having jumped through countless hoops, and visiting countless hobby shops, he finally landed here… another hobby shop giving him a sliver of hope that he could end his journey. He passes by a girl — someone he’d never notice, if not for her defining characteristic. Her posture. And that posture had him glance downward away from her face and onto her shoulders. Antoine felt self-conscious about how he stood. Was it straight enough? It didn’t take long for distraction to settle in. Through his peripheral, something better than her shoulders caught his attention. A graphic T-shirt with some of the most absurd art he could have imagined. “Hey,” Antoine pointed down to the words. “I like your shirt.” Maybe it was for the wrong reasons, but she didn’t know that. Yet.

JoJo continued to slide under, splitting her focus between offense and defense. When push came to shove, she chose to have it all — she was greedy. Three tendrils aimed to stop his projectiles. And they did. But the challenge was landing a hit on him, not avoiding his attacks on her. In prioritizing her safety, she hesitated. JoJo aimed her other hand, but nothing happened. Not in time, anyway. Ghouligan’s pool stick would block her vision, as it slowly closed the gap between them, looking to slam against her skull. He had the utmost faith in his failure. If for whatever reason she succeeded, then the fault would have lied in that moment of hesitation. But there was a plan. There must be. And he bought into it. He gave her everything she needed to succeed. All the variables were in place. This was her moment. Would she take the shot or not?
