Thankfully, it was an ink spill and not an oil spill. If they had damaged the waters more than the creatures damaged the land, what would have that meant for their alleged victory? Yet again, Peacemaker showed an affinity for over-the-top, risky plays to eliminate threats. The strategy had garnered results both times they worked together, but it informed him about the kind of person she was — dramatic. Whether that was out of desperation or due to a childlike levity seeing their brand of heroism as… he couldn’t finish the thought. Instead, another intrusive one barged in. Ghouligan pulled out his phone and stuck it to his ear. This time, he was dialing JoJo. When she eventually picked up or listened to the voice mail should she ignore it, she’d hear the following: “We’re done here for today. Get somewhere safe before the heroes arrive. I’ll be sending you coordinates to our next rendezvous point. Think it’s time to introduce you to a few people.” Click.Ghouligan would leave the mess for the heroes. He fixed their problem. One less sea creature to slaughter. Not that he was happy with his limitations — those forced upon him by his equipment. He’d have to ask Bernie for any manufacturers that could elevate his gear. Gadget was busy. Miss G, too. There’s gotta be someone.

The Undertow continues to expand. For the safety of previous members, Ghoul is here to introduce these inductees to one another. He’s presenting them with a challenge — one that’ll prove their skill, and earnestness, and demonstrate the purpose of the group. In times of trouble, when there are things you cannot do alone, call on The Undertow. The previous members are busy, too. Gadget is working on creating symbols for the group, the actual network is still underway, and Guts is working on the safe house project… a few others have found themselves busy with other, personal ventures to occupy their time. With their blessing, Ghouligan has invited the group to a temporary safe house. It’d look unassuming from the outside. You might think it an old, rundown store on the cusp of refurbishing. Some signs indicate arrest for any trespassers and a few others mention when it’ll reopen — a year from now. In a week, The Undertow will have abandoned the property, but he’ll explain the details of that later. For now, an umbral figure covered in shadow, adorns a skull mask on his face, awaiting the arrival of his new contemporaries. On his back is a cue stick and on his hips is a sack of pool balls. Due to his recent activities, some may have heard of him through police reports or local news — a dangerous reputation befitting a murderer. Others might not. There are even members coming that Ghouligan is unaware of, people who may not have been invited at all. Eventually, moles and traitors will be run out of the group. Ghouligan has personally guaranteed this. Until then, he waits. There will be four rounds of posting. - The first round is blanket introductions for your characters. Please include a physical description and why they have decided to come.
- The second round is Ghouligan giving a proper introduction to the Undertow. He asks for introductions and stated goals (What are they looking to accomplish by being a vigilante?)
- The third round is the introduction of a follow-up mission. The Undertow is looking to stop a mutant trafficking operation, targeting young animal-like children for a circus.
- The fourth round is outros. Have fun with it ;D
- This thread is open to other vigilantes who want to join. If you're from a different faction, just DM me and we can work things out! - You only have to post once per round, but you can post more. - If you have to skip a round (life happens), you can compensate in later rounds. - This thread will be submitted as a non-threatening mission when completed (February). - The first round ends on January 24th, 2024.

“I… don’t have ears.” While his senses still function as if he were made of flesh and cartilage, he doesn’t have the physical appendages to use Bluetooth. The better option was what he was doing now, using friction to keep the phone glued to the side of his head as navigated his battle with the octopus. “But I hear your message loud and clear.” Hanging up the phone, he looked toward the machines. With eyes like his — or what would have been eyes — it was easy to orient himself. Now, he just needed to lure the damn thing over there. Skidding midair, he flipped on his feet and skidded down an invisible, everchanging rail that guided him toward Peacekeeper. The octopus followed. Ghouligan took a few shots, keeping the monster irritated. The actual attacks were not more than pebbles with a hide like his. And he was mindful to avoid the impromptu axe the creature swung, too, knowing it better to leave it inside of its arm instead of bleeding out. An open wound was only a target. Then again, that would have been a target, too, if not for Jojo’s call. “We’re almost there, buddy.”

When the octopus slams down, all of the debris shatters further. Ghouligan increases the friction further to protect himself from the stray splinters, leaving him an easy target. The creature surrounds him with his many arms and entangles his body — the barrier isn’t strong enough to deal with the four, giant arms crushing the life out of you. It’s only a moment of pressure as he’s lifted into the air, but Ghouligan can feel his body snapping. If it weren’t for his composition, being made of force, then his bones would have broken and he would have died on the spot. But his physiology gives him a second — that’s all he needs, one second — to change the application of his technique. Instead of piling friction atop itself to create a wall, he’d remove as much as he could, slipping out of the octopus’ grasp. Unfortunately, due to the pressure, he flies in the air, slipping out of the crevice closest to him. Ring, ring, ring. “Who the hell is calling me?” Midair, Ghouligan pulls out the phone and puts it where his ear would have been. “A bit busy falling to my death here.”

You might not think it, but Ghouligan is exceptionally strong. Strong enough to lift a piece of driftwood the size of a man. Strong enough to lift it over his shoulder. And strong enough to throw it like a spear at the cephalopod with the might of Zeus. The wooden lightning bolt flew through the air until it punctured the octopus's flesh, lodging itself within its most forefront appendage — a necessary, defensive measure. It cried out in pain, its seething rage manifesting in tremors that shook the ground which, in turn, ruptured the surface of the water. In tandem, it lifted its other arms and swam forward, lunging through the water with newfound resolve. With the same shrapnel stuck in its arm, it swang overhead like a guillotine, looking to cut Ghouligan down where he stood. Even if he managed to avoid the attack, the violent waves would strike at him, too. And amid the chaos, the creature would have the rest of its hards hunt the man down, looking to crush it in its grip.

“Right,” Note to self: avoid her at all costs. “About that…” It had only been a few interactions, but Antoine had enough of her for the rest of his life. A mildly amusing shirt wasn’t enough to warrant the batshit mood swings Jun underwent. Her inconsistent nature reeked of emotional volatility. Not only that, but she seemed to have a warped sense of law and justice. Antoine wasn’t one to judge, but he was pragmatic enough to value his own well-being. Plus, Bernie wanted the stuff. For something. He didn’t know but he did know that he could make use of the glitter on him. Unlike others, he had a surefire way of making sure it slid right off without damaging the product. Hell, if it weren’t for how uptight Jun was, then he would’ve given her some of her own, too. Too bad she wants to turn herself in for evidence. “I gotta go.” Antoine runs off. Full steam ahead. “You stay here! They need eyewitnesses, after all!” Uncalled for, but funny.

“Nevermind…” Ghouligan says to himself. “Guess I’m the one-man army.” Maybe JoJo wasn’t built for the vigilante shtick after all. Fighting street-level criminals was different than monsters like this, especially if you were inexperienced. JoJo had all the power necessary to succeed in fights like these, but the difference between the good and the great was their mindset. If JoJo couldn’t overcome her fear, she shouldn’t be in life-threatening situations. Especially, when the lives belonged to others. The monster swung another arm. This time, Ghouligan skidded through the water, pushing off it as if he were on ice skates. A giant wave threatened to bring him under, but a pool ball would act as a vessel for his quirk, having the water disperse before it got to him. It crashed against an invisible wall. If his pool balls wouldn’t deal damage, then he’d have to use something sharper. Like those fragments of the recently destroyed dock. “This might work.” He looked back as the creature revved another attack. Time to intercept.

Antoine let go. Some people were just too much. Empathy was important but understanding your own emotional bandwidth was important, too. And asserting your ‘boundaries’ when you’re on the cusp of crushing someone’s skull seemed a bit hypocritical. If it weren’t for their inconvenient antagonist and the quest for Bernie’s glitter, then he would disengaged entirely — this was not his headache to have. “Disturbing the peace is illegal,” People loved their technicalities, which made it all the worse when they were wrong on every level, including the technical. Sirens could be heard in the distance. “And looks like you’re running out of time.” Boom.Glitter. Everywhere. “I’ve been looking for this stuff, too. I wonder if this is enough.” Antoine pulls out his phone and takes a selfie, sending it to Bernie. This enough, boss?Try not to wear it. Thanks! “Guess I gotta grab some before the cops get here.” Antoine cracked his neck. “Filing a report would waste too much time.” He turned to Jun. “How much do you need?”

Antoine didn’t want to mingle with Japan’s underbelly. One of the downsides of being Bernie’s security guard meant being his errand boy. And whenever he finished his evening meetings, there was always work to be done. Tonight, he’d be venturing into an underground arena where people’s lives were pitted against each other. “And the list?” Antoine stuck his hand out. “List? Oh, right!” Bernie grabbed a crumpled paper from his pocket and handed it over. “It should have everything you need.” “Mirror Brigade? Sticky hand?” “Yep, those are the big two! It’s why they’re at the top.” “I mean the list of your moles or informants or whatever.” “Oh, you’re not killing tonight.” “Then why am I going?” “To bring me back the Mirror Brigade, Sticky Hand, and everything else on that list. Or to at least get some photos and find out who took them. We can bid for them later.” “I’m shopping?” “Window shopping. Isn’t that exciting?!” Needless to say, it wasn’t exciting. Antoine found himself amid an exhibit not as Ghouligan, an umbral husk of force hidden underneath a demon mask, but as Antoine, the security guard. If he were lucky, he’d be able to get in and out as quickly as possible. “Great.” He sighed. “Just in time.” As he entered, the competition was starting. And some deranged man in a bird mask was using some adhesive appendage to try and greet people before they came to blows. There’s the sticky hand. He crosses that off the list. Let’s see what else is around here.

Ghouligan didn’t hear Hideo’s last words. All he saw was his warm, dead body lying on the ground. That’s all Chuck would see, too. Before he had the luxury of turning around, Ghouligan took Chuck’s fate into his own hands. In the same way that Chuck took Hideo’s: without a second thought. Ghouligan didn’t understand Chuck. It was unfathomable, really. To leave behind your family and pursue a life of crime. There were better ways to chase fame, better ways to make money, and better ways to keep them safe. It reminded him of his own father and the same actions he took that got him strung up by the gangs he owed. Men like these chose the easy way out instead of the far more challenging, rewarding futures they could have tended by choosing their families. Still, for all his mistakes, they’d miss him. His wife would cry over the man she loved. His children would mourn a father they barely knew, if ever. And old friends would visit, damning themselves for not being there earlier. Ghouligan slammed his cue stick against the pool balls that floated into the room. With Chuck’s ability to manipulate his body, Ghouligan sought to bludgeon every last inch of him until he was an unmoving, unrecognizable clump of cobalt flesh. Death was bittersweet. He wondered what the world would have looked like if Chuck had asked him for help. There wasn’t much Ghouligan could do, but there was always Bernie. And yet Chuck refused to surrender himself because, like so many, they were stuck in their ways. That was behind him. Everything was as he turned his back to the scene. He left the room and returned to Bernie’s yacht, delivering the news. Hideo and the man who killed Hideo were dead.

Peacemaker flinched. It’s difficult to fight our base compulsions — instincts carved into our bodies to help us survive a cruel and unjust world. And while they had only briefly known each other, Ghouligan was compelled to build rapport in the only way he knew how: with his smart goddamn mouth. “You wouldn’t have hit me anyway.” Unprompted, rude even. “Might have a chance in a few months.” The statement was utterly false. In different circumstances, JoJo would have landed her hit. She could even take a few rounds off of him. It was part of why he invited her despite the apparent failure to land a hit. It was less about the outcome of the fight and more an analysis of her abilities. She had the type of flexibility needed to help deal with these creatures — close range, offense, defense, mobility. JoJo had the whole package. Except she was a coward. “Don’t actua—” Maybe she had better senses than he thought. She left before the creature swang, knowing it was coming. Or perhaps the movement instigated it. Nonetheless, it swung its appendance in a vertical arc that slammed down onto the doc, destroying it as pieces of wood floated into the water. Much like the wood, Ghouligan floated, too. Gently landing on the water’s surface. Unlike others, he didn’t sink. The rack of pool balls slid in the air, finding themselves in front of his cue stick as he slammed them toward the octopus. One of Ghouligan’s weaknesses became apparent. He was holding back. He had to. His equipment wasn’t strong enough to deal with the full brunt of his might. Because of this, the octopus harmlessly blocked the projectiles as they crashed into one of his tentacles. “Guess I’m the distraction, big guy.”

“If I look the way I normally do,” An intentionally false implication he spends more time as Ghouligan than as Antoine. “Then I’d draw too much attention. It’s fine when on my own, but not when I could compromise someone else’s work.” As self-centered as he was and as little experience as he had working with others, it came naturally to him. The pragmatic nature of his decision-making, his mind always working in favor of executing his goals, lent itself to understanding others and their needs, regardless of whether or not they realized what those needs were. “This is a lot more thorough than I expected,” Ghouligan took note of their operation. The most prominent hurdle would be replicating it across the country. Something this resource-intensive, while noble, was unrealistic. Not with how wide Ghouligan wanted to expand. “A proposition.” He began. “I want to make two types of safe houses. This will be an example of the first. A stable, reliable location that the Undertow could rely on. The second idea is a bit less… glamorous.” A pause to gauge his reaction. “I want something a bit more crude and rudimentary. The second type of safe house needs to be moved every month or so. Swapping between locations gives us the anonymity we need. These, however, need to be in the heart of the cities. There’s a higher risk of everything… so movement will buy us some time, and some safety.” Another pause as an idea — a bad one — struck. “Safe apartments, if you will.” Why did I say that? “We’ll workshop the name.”

The man refused to surrender. He pulls the trigger of his snotgun and turns Jun’s shirt into a modern art piece. Jun is rightfully upset, but so is Antoine — he really liked that shirt. You don’t see that kind of innovative comedy every day. People usually kept it online as a meme, but Jun had the bravery to wear that into the world unabashedly. “I called them,” Antoine puts his hand on Jun’s shoulder. “But he’s not a threat.” As much as he understood the frustration, responding to this harassment with violence wasn’t the answer. Not for him and not for a hero student like Jun — not that he knew the specifics. “They catch you on camera, then you’re getting in trouble, too.” Antoine believed in the system. Maybe it was flawed, maybe it could be improved upon, but it was needed. And even with the best intentions, even if Jun wasn’t trying to kill him — although the giant hammer was cause for concern — they’d deal with the consequences. But there was potential. Not for Antoine, but Ghouligan. “You took apart the gun, you did more than enough.” He said. “Please don’t hit him.” “Please don’t hit me!” The man added. “Shut up. I’m security, I have legal authority to punch you in the face.” That’s not how it worked, but the man didn’t need to know that. Antoine turns back to Jun. “You good?”
