The sarcasm didn’t bother Nat. She wasn’t very good at conversation sometimes and she knew it. Plus, it was kind of funny to get called out on it in a way. Of course in the dark the very small bit of amusement on her face was harder to see than it normally would be, and the tumble down the hill put that whole conversation out of mind anyways. Yoko saying she wasn’t okay was the more alarming part, even if she was also angry. Nat couldn’t really tell much in the dark other than that they were stuck and she could feel something on the chain when she moved her leg. But she couldn’t tell how hurt Yoko was, or in what way, and she had a point about the rain risking them catching a cold if it couldn’t be turned off. Trying to cooperate with Yoko’s attempts to reach the dropped items, she was about to ask how bad she was hurt when the other girl went off on a rant.
Nat stayed quiet throughout all of it, and a little after as Yoko flailed about… probably trying to make the rain cloud go away. She was sort of luck to be not directly under it like Yoko was, but she was still getting pretty soaked and cold too, so she wasn’t surprised that on top of being hurt and frustrated the rain cloud was just that much more on top of everything else. Attempting to shift a bit and more or less failing, Nat finally spoke up.
“It’s not that I think I’m too good, and I don’t hate you at all. I know I’m not special, and that being Quirkless is a problem. If I had one I could probably get us out of this. I’m… not much of a people person either, I don’t usually know what to say and you seemed like you wouldn’t appreciate too much small talk. I guess I got the wrong impression.” She paused for a moment, trying to think of what would be best to say in this situation. Words couldn’t really help them right now, but there had to be something she could do to make up for it. “You’re not bleeding are you? We can probably get a makeshift bandage going somehow if you are.” They had the map, but it was probably not very good for that, and the rain would dissolve it pretty quick anyways. Maybe a piece of fabric or something? While she was thinking about how to possibly do that while unable to see much or move freely, depending on where Yoko was hurt if she even was bleeding at all, Nat thought of a small extra thing to say. “It doesn’t help much but, I actually think you’re pretty funny and being direct makes it pretty easy to know what to do or not, or if I’ve said something wrong. I’d hate it if I had a two-faced roommate that acted sweet but wasn’t.” Yanai Yoko

“Looks like.” Nat agreed, glancing up from the map at the dark mountains she could barely see while Yoko looked at the map. Tilting her head to one side, she was curious what Yoko had against mountains. She could think of a few potential reasons, like them just being a lot of uphill, uneven terrain to get over or lots of loose rocks. She wasn’t certain, but her roommate didn’t strike her as the especially athletic type. So she just chimed in with a quick “Very uphill.” acknowledgement as they set off on their assignment. Pausing when Yoko wanted to change course, Nat turned her attention back down to the map and started to reply “Let me che-” when suddenly her leg got tugged out from under her by Yoko slipping off the side of a hill.
Pushing off with her other foot in a quick hop, Nat managed to spare herself from being awkwardly yanked into the splits on the way down, but that didn’t stop the rest of the tumble down the hill from being a problem. Yoko tumbling forced her to turn in the air and land hard on her chest instead of on her foot like she planned, and then she was caught tumbling down the hill too. Hands up around her head, keeping hold of the map, she landed at the bottom with a ‘oof’ noise and stayed still for a moment to get her bearings. Peeking out from her arms, pushing herself into an upright position, Nat gave cautious nod as she glanced her arms and legs over. “Think so. Just bruises. Yo-” She started to ask Yoko in turn, cut off by the sudden concern for the dropped flashlight and umbrella. And then the rain that started to pour down on them.
Moving the map out of the way hastily, leaning back to try and get enough room away from the rain cloud, Nat shifted her tied leg towards the flashlight and umbrella to try and give Yoko enough room to reach them. “Sorry, didn’t notice the ridge on the map. You okay?” Yanai Yoko

Nat gave a slight shake of her head. She hadn’t heard it from the second years, but it wasn’t important anyways so she didn’t elaborate and let the teacher continue. Peering at the map, she tried to commit some of the checkpoints to memory while letting Yoko take it and the flashlight. Just on the off chance something happened to the map. She figured the shorter girl wanted to handle the navigating side of things and that suited her just fine, really.
The chains suddenly appearing and wrapping around her leg made her reflexively shift her weight to her other leg, subtly like she was about to leap away, but she caught herself and stayed put. Although it was so fast that trying to leap away wouldn’t have done much more than yank her leg, or maybe even trip Yoko, so it was a good thing she didn’t. “Alright.” She noted, half-raising her arm for a thumbs-up to show she understood. While she wasn’t interested in trying to catch up to or outdo the other pairs of students, she did intend to do her best and didn’t want to intentionally cheat or anything. Especially not when it’d get someone else in trouble too.
“Well enough, I think.” Nat answered as she accepted the map from Yoko before the words had fully left her mouth, turning her attention half-towards the map and half towards keeping the right pace with her teammate… who had shorter legs, so she had to make sure not to take too long of a step. “I think the first checkpoint is this way, if we’re starting here.” She tapped her index finger on a spot on the map, then raised it up slowly to point in a direction. “You set the pace?”

Nat offered a very small shrug of her shoulders that was easy to miss as she popped a piece of pickled cucumber in her mouth with her own chopsticks, letting Yoko complain about the night class. She’d personally heard about night school before, and as far as she knew it was a pretty old concept even if it wasn’t a super popular one. But beyond even that, heroes often had to work at night, in the dork, or in other weird situations so she wasn’t surprised at all by the course being scheduled the way it was. Heroes had to be flexible like that, so heroes-in-training needed to be too. “On it.” Was her only real contribution to that conversation, fishing out her phone with one hand to set an alarm while Yoko went off to take a nap. She contemplated doing the same, but ended up spending her time reading instead.
Less risk of accidentally sleeping through the alarm that way, and she could catch up on some of her manga she had been meaning to read.
—
“Yeah, that’s us.” Nat confirmed, though she did give Yoko a small glance. Was Yanai not actually her last name, or had the teacher just mispronounced it really badly? Or did she just not like her last name? Whatever the case it wasn’t her business, so she focused on the task at hand and replied in her usual flat tone of voice. “Sorry, I misjudged how long it’d take to get here.” Because of Yoko, technically, but Nat didn’t see any reason to mention that to the teacher. Besides, Yoko had put her in charge of the alarm thing so it was a bit on her for not being able to make sure they were on time after all. “It’s an exercise where we get tied together by the feet, right?”
She lightly lifted one foot for a very small amount of emphasis. Yanai Yoko

Nat gave a slight tilt of her head at Yoko’s explanation. She hadn’t personally heard of many Quirks that were based on mood, but it made sense. It was probably like accidentally breaking a pencil when you’re excited or frustrated, but with super powers going off instead of using a bit too much force. “Can be.” She replied briefly in response to moving being ‘the worst’. She didn’t feel it personally, but she’d moved around a lot and was probably just used to it by now. Maybe Yoko hadn’t moved before now? That wasn’t too unusual for people going to university dorms. Or maybe a bunch of annoying issues had come up earlier in her day?
For now Nat was content to stay quiet until Yoko spoke up again, glancing at her with a raised eyebrow. Maybe she was just being polite and didn’t want to assume anything? “I’m not.” She considered elaborating, but Yoko probably wouldn’t find where she was from or her full name particularly interesting to hear about. Getting ready to head back inside and finish unpacking, she instead offered: “Moving can be a lot all at once, so let me know if I can lend a hand with anything. Gets done faster that way, right?”
If Yoko didn’t accept her offer she wasn’t going to insist, but hopefully just getting the offer at all made her day a little less bad.

Nat didn’t press the point. Whatever reasons Yoko had for not wanting to smoke indoors weren’t important, what was important was that she didn’t want to smoke indoors. And she did still appreciate it. She wasn’t sure if the other girl took it wrong or not, but it was good to know her roommate wasn’t a fan of taking other people’s stuff either. She wouldn’t have to worry about leaving something in the common space and it disappearing or something like that. When Yoko looked her up and down the tone and what she said next didn’t surprise Nat at all, the blonde shifting her stance slightly onto one foot and bringing her arms up to very loosely cross under her chest as her face remained the same neutral look she always had. She was just going to wait it out, but then Yoko changed tracks a bit and Nat slightly tilted her head to the side.
Was Yoko just being fair about how some Quirks caused problems, or had she misunderstood her as being insulting her when she was more insulting the school? She did seem like she had a gruff energy about her. Nat did raise an eyebrow though, the most expressive thing she’d done so far, at the bit about class and the rain cloud that appeared. That… explained a few things. The invitation of sorts that followed caught her by surprise though, Nat glancing off to the side at the things left to unpack still before following after Yoko.
“I don’t.” She answered, following along all the same, trailing just a bit enough to stay out of the rain. By the time they were outside, she’d ask “That’s a reflex of some kind?” while giving a light nod at the rain cloud up above Yoko’s umbrella. She couldn’t imagine Yoko was raining on herself on purpose, getting water all over indoors and needing to use an umbrella, on purpose. “Must be nice in the summer, though.” Yanai Yoko

For a split second Nat thought the ‘no way’ was Yoko’s answer, but the rest cleared that misunderstanding up before it could happen. “Yeah.” She confirmed, setting the book aside and fishing out more things. She wasn’t going to leave them scattered on the counter, but it’d be easier to unpack if she could sort it out a bit first and put things that were going in the same general area together. She didn’t notice Yoko’s roundabout glance using the mirror at all, only looking over at her again when she turned the conversation to sharing details about herself. After the bit about not smoking in doors, Nat gave a little incline of her head and a quick “Appreciate it.” while letting Yoko continue directing the conversation.
She meant it too. While she probably wouldn’t make a fuss over it, smoking inside was pretty bad for furniture, the ceiling, everything really. She especially didn't want smoke getting stuck in her dreadlocks if she could help it. And it’d make a small space like this stink all the time, too. The note about Yoko’s umbrella being off limits made Nat pause a bit, hefting up an armful of books to finally go put in her room as she stared back at her. “I don’t take other people’s things.” It was meant as a reassurance, but she said it in kind of a flat way. Starting to head to her room to put the books away, she called back. “I’m Quirkless.”
A lot of people would make that kind of thing a big deal but she said it in a very matter-of-fact way. When she’d stacked her books out on her desk after a moment she came back out and added. “Sorry in advance if that makes classes difficult, by the way.”

Pulling her own luggage, bag slung over one shoulder, Nat didn’t pay much mind to Yoko at first. The red hoodie was hard to miss, giving her a small glance and the very faintest hint of a nod-and-smile that most people wouldn’t notice at all as she carried on going about getting herself moved in. But then she came across her again, apparently they shared the same living area and were going to be roommates? Yoko beat her to commenting on it and Nat gave a slight incline of her head in acknowledgement, chiming back with a quick “Nat.” as her own introduction - this girl didn’t bother with a last name so she probably didn’t want to do the whole long winded my-name-is thing. Watching her undo her hair for a moment, Nat shrugged her bag off her shoulder to set it aside and pulled the rest of her luggage over to an out of the way spot so she could start unpacking at a casual pace while they talked.
“Department of Heroes. You?” There was a slight pause before Nat turned the question back to Yoko, pulling a book from her bag and flipping it around to note the title before glancing about for a good place to put it. Cluttering up the limited counter space would be no good, so probably in her room somewhere? Maybe she had enough desk space to stack them all up? Yanai Yoko

Nat is the kind of person that is easy to be around, but hard to get to know. She rarely talks about herself unless someone happens to ask directly and can come across as a very private and reserved person as a result, but doesn't actually have any problem with sharing - she just assumes things about herself aren't particularly interesting to talk about and would rather focus on other things due to a lack of self-worth. She is often engaged in one task or another, be it training, working on equipment, helping someone out with something, or keeping busy with a book, game or show of some kind. Although she is almost never idle she maintains a low-energy, relaxed demeanor and way she goes about things and drifts around whatever problems come up in her day. Her lack of much expression makes her hard to read and she often seems disconnected from the people and events going on around her, but she cares a lot more than she shows. Despite being otherwise very agreeable, she is very insistent about her precise height whenever it comes up. [attr="class","body"] [attr="class","header2"]APPEARANCE » HEIGHT: 5’6 ½” / 168.91 cm » WEIGHT: 135.14 lb / 61.3 kg » EYE COLOR: Green » HAIR COLOR: Blonde » SKIN COLOR: Beige » FACE CLAIM NAME: Ann » FACE CLAIM SERIES: Sand Land What stands out most about Nat is her bright green eyes and blonde dreadlocks that reach just past her shoulders. She's fit with a lean-muscle build and has relatively long legs for her height. She has thin, sharply arched eyebrows that tend to emphasize her otherwise subtle expression. Her face is round with eternally chubby cheeks in that forever baby-face sort of way and tends to make her attempts at sterner expressions hard to take seriously for some. Although she doesn't use much makeup, she does often wear lip stick and a bit of eyeliner. Fashion wise she'll wear whatever uniform, gym clothes or other attire is appropriate for a given occasion, but when she has free reign to wear whatever she likes she prefers things that compliment big sturdy boots and gloves. Her favorite outfit is blue shorts and a long sleeved cropped top contrasted by a red scarf and matching side-tied skirt. [attr="class","body"] [attr="class","header2"]HISTORY My name is Natesa Bee, like the bug and not the letter. I usually go by Nat for short but some people call me Extra-Ordinary as a joke since I'm Quirkless. It's not a bad joke, honestly. Oh, and because sometimes the world has a weird sense of humor, I was born on World Bee Day. I've been taking fighting classes since I was a kid and my legwork isn't the worst. I'm not very talented at fighting, though, and without a Quirk a lot of people would say its foolish to want to be a hero. I don't care. Even my family think I'm trying to prove something about how Quirkless people can be heroes too. That isn't it at all. Some people want to be heroes because they're heroic at heart, or they want to help people, or maybe they just want people to see how amazing they are in action. I just want to do something useful. When I was a kid people always talked about wanting to be a hero, to make movies, to own a restaurant, all kinds of things like that. A lot of people end up getting new dreams to focus on or give up, but a lot of the ones I knew didn't get the chance at all. Even though I've never had a passion like that, and I'm not good at much, somehow I'm the one that's still here. Accidents and disasters have fallen on a lot of the people I knew growing up, but I was always lucky enough to avoid the worst of it. I think the idea of wanting to do something useful was always somewhere in the back of my head, but its taken up a lot more of my focus over the years. The way I see it, if I can save someone then they can go on to do the things they want to do, to have a good life. There's nothing better that I could do with my time than that. So I want to be a hero, and even though it means I have a lot of work ahead of me I managed to get through the UAU entrance exam. I guess teamwork really earns you points even when you're completely Quirkless and just running around kicking things and doing whatever you can to help.
