She had told the school many times that she wanted, no demanded to have a room all to herself, but apparently that wasn’t how university dorm living was supposed to be. Bullshit. How could she be expected to share her living quarters with others? She wasn’t having any of it, and she was going to let whoever her roommate was hear the worst of it. With a huff she stopped and looked back down at her room number. At least she was moving in the right direction, shitty interior design. She was going to complain to the school admin about that too.

Pulling her luggage behind her she finally came to a stop at her room door, rolling her sore shoulders for a moment before pulling it open. Whether she was the first to arrive or not she would immediately start putting her bags down in one end of the common room. She had so much shit to unpack and no time to play the video games she wanted to play. It was just one of those days. When her roommate either showed up, or she finally took note of them she gave a casual. ‘‘Hey. This your room too? I guess that makes us roommates.’’ She crossed her arms and gave them a lookover. Were they a first year too? ‘‘I’m Yoko.’’ She deliberately left out her last name so that there would be no associations made with her big sister who was a pro hero and the school nurse. ‘‘Don’t expect a handshake.’’ She turned to look at a mirror on the wall and started messing with her hair, undoing the braids one at a time since they were starting to get frazzled. ‘‘So, what course are you in?’’ She continued the conversation while looking at her reflection instead of Nat.

Pulling her own luggage, bag slung over one shoulder, Nat didn’t pay much mind to Yoko at first. The red hoodie was hard to miss, giving her a small glance and the very faintest hint of a nod-and-smile that most people wouldn’t notice at all as she carried on going about getting herself moved in. But then she came across her again, apparently they shared the same living area and were going to be roommates? Yoko beat her to commenting on it and Nat gave a slight incline of her head in acknowledgement, chiming back with a quick “Nat.” as her own introduction - this girl didn’t bother with a last name so she probably didn’t want to do the whole long winded my-name-is thing. Watching her undo her hair for a moment, Nat shrugged her bag off her shoulder to set it aside and pulled the rest of her luggage over to an out of the way spot so she could start unpacking at a casual pace while they talked.

“Department of Heroes. You?” There was a slight pause before Nat turned the question back to Yoko, pulling a book from her bag and flipping it around to note the title before glancing about for a good place to put it. Cluttering up the limited counter space would be no good, so probably in her room somewhere? Maybe she had enough desk space to stack them all up?

“No way. First year? If you are then we’ll be classmates too.” She looked at Nat in the mirror as she finished up her hair. She didn’t recognize her from the exam, but then again she hardly took note of anyone at her entrance exam. She was too busy being angry and intentionally failing to take note of others.

She turned her attention to her own luggage, pocketing a new pack of cigarettes since she ran out on the last one she kept in her hoodie. “I’m a smoker.” She added. Someone more courteous might ask for permission, or say it as an apology, but she said it very matter-of-factly. “I also work most Wednesdays and some weekends so I won’t be here all the time.” She took out a few books of her own to put away in her room, but turned to look at Nat one more time. “I don’t smoke indoors, that shit is disgusting.” She may be a bitch, but she was a bitch that liked clean living.

When she picked up her umbrella to put away she remembered another ground rule she should lay out. “This is my umbrella. You can’t borrow it. I need it at all times so buy your own.” Yoko stared at Nat, finally giving her some room to speak. “So, anything I should know about you?”

For a split second Nat thought the ‘no way’ was Yoko’s answer, but the rest cleared that misunderstanding up before it could happen. “Yeah.” She confirmed, setting the book aside and fishing out more things. She wasn’t going to leave them scattered on the counter, but it’d be easier to unpack if she could sort it out a bit first and put things that were going in the same general area together. She didn’t notice Yoko’s roundabout glance using the mirror at all, only looking over at her again when she turned the conversation to sharing details about herself. After the bit about not smoking in doors, Nat gave a little incline of her head and a quick “Appreciate it.” while letting Yoko continue directing the conversation.

She meant it too. While she probably wouldn’t make a fuss over it, smoking inside was pretty bad for furniture, the ceiling, everything really. She especially didn't want smoke getting stuck in her dreadlocks if she could help it. And it’d make a small space like this stink all the time, too. The note about Yoko’s umbrella being off limits made Nat pause a bit, hefting up an armful of books to finally go put in her room as she stared back at her. “I don’t take other people’s things.” It was meant as a reassurance, but she said it in kind of a flat way. Starting to head to her room to put the books away, she called back. “I’m Quirkless.”

A lot of people would make that kind of thing a big deal but she said it in a very matter-of-fact way. When she’d stacked her books out on her desk after a moment she came back out and added. “Sorry in advance if that makes classes difficult, by the way.”

‘‘I don’t do it for you.’’ She fiddled with the pack of cigarettes in her pocket, itching for a smoke. She wasn’t here to make friends, but at least Nat wasn’t a jerk so far. If things kept up like this she might even be able to tolerate her presence for more than an hour, which was ideal if they were going to be roommates. She went to put away some of her clothes, their conversation seemingly continuing while they were going about their individual unpacking. Good. She didn’t give a shit about eye contact. ‘‘Me neither.’’ She said flatly. Taking things would only cause the kind of trouble she didn’t want to create for herself. What Nat said next caught her by surprise.

‘‘No shit.’’ She walked out of her room and looked over Nat one more time. ‘‘So they even let the quirkless join UAU now. The Heroes Association must be getting desperate.’’ Her tone was mocking in a way Nat had probably heard before. It was hard for her and many other hero students to not be skeptical when met with a quirkless student that was supposedly good enough for the Department of Heroes. ‘‘Then again, sometimes being quirkless is probably preferable to the alternative.’’ She nonchalantly opened her umbrella as a small, dark cloud manifested over her head and began raining on her. ‘‘Oh, I don’t give a shit about class.’’ She put a cigarette between her lips and started heading for the door. ‘‘Do you smoke? I’m going out for some air.’’

Nat didn’t press the point. Whatever reasons Yoko had for not wanting to smoke indoors weren’t important, what was important was that she didn’t want to smoke indoors. And she did still appreciate it. She wasn’t sure if the other girl took it wrong or not, but it was good to know her roommate wasn’t a fan of taking other people’s stuff either. She wouldn’t have to worry about leaving something in the common space and it disappearing or something like that. When Yoko looked her up and down the tone and what she said next didn’t surprise Nat at all, the blonde shifting her stance slightly onto one foot and bringing her arms up to very loosely cross under her chest as her face remained the same neutral look she always had. She was just going to wait it out, but then Yoko changed tracks a bit and Nat slightly tilted her head to the side.

Was Yoko just being fair about how some Quirks caused problems, or had she misunderstood her as being insulting her when she was more insulting the school? She did seem like she had a gruff energy about her. Nat did raise an eyebrow though, the most expressive thing she’d done so far, at the bit about class and the rain cloud that appeared. That… explained a few things. The invitation of sorts that followed caught her by surprise though, Nat glancing off to the side at the things left to unpack still before following after Yoko.

“I don’t.” She answered, following along all the same, trailing just a bit enough to stay out of the rain. By the time they were outside, she’d ask “That’s a reflex of some kind?” while giving a light nod at the rain cloud up above Yoko’s umbrella. She couldn’t imagine Yoko was raining on herself on purpose, getting water all over indoors and needing to use an umbrella, on purpose. “Must be nice in the summer, though.”

“That?” She pointed up at her umbrella and shook her head gently. “Nah.” There was another pause as she took out her lighter and lit the cigarette, taking in a long drag of smoke and blowing it out before fully answering Nat’s question. “I’m just having a bad day. Moving is the worst, don’t you think?” At least it was a nice day out, not that she was really going anywhere. People more social than her probably had tons of friends to meet up with. Was Nat that type of person? She wasn’t that easy to get a read on. She gave the energy of a dorky loner, or a dork who has friends she might be inviting over. Fine by her, so long as she doesn’t have to be part of it. What Nat said next made her look at her and give a casual shrug. “Guess that’s one way to look at it.” She continued smoking in silence for a little while, either savoring the peace and quiet or letting Nat dictate the conversation.

“Nat. That’s an unusual name, are you from around here?” Just as she finished her cigarette she put it over her head, letting the rain put it out for her before putting it in an ashtray. Maybe Nat was a common name in other prefectures and she was just being ignorant.

Nat gave a slight tilt of her head at Yoko’s explanation. She hadn’t personally heard of many Quirks that were based on mood, but it made sense. It was probably like accidentally breaking a pencil when you’re excited or frustrated, but with super powers going off instead of using a bit too much force. “Can be.” She replied briefly in response to moving being ‘the worst’. She didn’t feel it personally, but she’d moved around a lot and was probably just used to it by now. Maybe Yoko hadn’t moved before now? That wasn’t too unusual for people going to university dorms. Or maybe a bunch of annoying issues had come up earlier in her day?

For now Nat was content to stay quiet until Yoko spoke up again, glancing at her with a raised eyebrow. Maybe she was just being polite and didn’t want to assume anything? “I’m not.” She considered elaborating, but Yoko probably wouldn’t find where she was from or her full name particularly interesting to hear about. Getting ready to head back inside and finish unpacking, she instead offered: “Moving can be a lot all at once, so let me know if I can lend a hand with anything. Gets done faster that way, right?”

If Yoko didn’t accept her offer she wasn’t going to insist, but hopefully just getting the offer at all made her day a little less bad.

Just as she hoped the cloud over her head soon dissipated, making it much easier to go inside and continue unpacking. ‘‘Right? Wouldn’t you rather do literally anything else?’’ Moving and unpacking meant less time for video games and books, or taking naps. Not to mention she wasn’t exactly in the habit of working out herself, so her muscles were sore already. Not that she was going to tell Nat here any of that. She wasn’t someone who was about to be all buddy buddy with someone she had just met, especially not if they were going to be a burden on her.

The quirkless and the one who refused to use her quirk. What a pairing, had UAU ever seen such mediocrity before? ‘‘You’re right, it does. I’ll let you know.’’ She closed her umbrella and started walking inside. ‘‘But I don’t need your help.’’ Sure unpacking might take all week, but she wasn’t going to let this stranger go through her stuff and learn too much about her. At best, she finished unpacking a little early. At worst, she risked making herself vulnerable in a new social environment where she already felt like she was fighting an uphill battle. Hanging up her calendar first, Yoko wrote classes and other important dates into it, since she knew she was going to forget checking her laptop. After writing in an extracurricular class she stared blankly at the page. ‘‘What the hell is Orienteering?’’ She muttered to herself.
