GAME ON! HP: ▰▰▰▱▱▱▱▱▱▱ 30/100 The lack of further instruction confused him. The boots were on when he clicked his heels together, just as she said, but they weren't doing much else. Was it a test of sorts? Where he was supposed to figure out the rest of the functionality on his own? Kinda like one of those games that just drop you in the middle of the world, with no one to hold your hand as you walk around to discover what's in store. Taro hummed as he looked down at his shoes. Huh. Had they always been sizzling?
All of a sudden he was off the ground, and he realized then what she meant by the boots lighting up.
Shocked by the abrupt departure, the digital being flailed his legs, failing to get them in the right position as he just flew in random directions in the air. At points he skidded along the walls, his form sparking as the abuse brought down his life bit by bit before he was able to peel himself off. He was still far from graceful when he did, the world spinning as he couldn't seem to find a way to stabilize himself.
Taro eventually came to a stop as he rammed into the ceiling. He stayed there for a moment as the boots burnt through its fuel, before they puttered to a stop and he fell to the floor with a crash. Just like from the bombs from days prior his body churned in static, trying to keep itself together as he just laid there in silence, waiting for it to calm down.

GAME ON! HP: ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 100/100 Taro tilted his head as the engineer explained, his face blank as several of her words flew over his head. He just wasn't the sciency type and, frankly, he didn't know how much of this information was important enough for him to remember. Not that he'd have trouble recalling the words, but there's a difference between doing that and understanding what they actually meant.
Once she finished talking he was silent for a moment, ruminating on her words as he picked up the shoes. "Soooo... rocket boots?" Why she couldn't just say that was beyond him. It could've saved a lot of time. The additional bits and bobs next to the main piece got him curious, but he ignored them for now as he gave the woman a nod. "Just the boots then."
Instead of taking off his shoes like a normal person, Taro wore the gear over them, forcing his feet in to make them fit. He stood once they were on, tapping each sole on the floor to test their heft. "Can you make the next ones bigger? I can't take off the boots I got." Taro may seem like an idiot for putting the gear on top of his existing shoes, and usually he was, but there was a reason this time. How often do you see characters change outfits in a game? Same principle here, he can't change his clothes at all, only layer additional pieces on top of them.
But given these were only prototypes, he could deal with them for now. The digital being clicked one heel against the other and, just as Retsu said, the boots powered on. He smiled as he looked to the woman for guidance. "Anyways, they look good to go. Now what?"

GAME ON! HP: ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 100/100 As much as Taro scoured the city's underground for jobs to do, the fact of the matter was either there weren't many people offering, or he just wasn't good at finding them. Gangs usually kept to themselves and didn't want to bring on outsiders who could turn on them at a drop of a hat - which, fair, he didn't have a sense of loyalty towards any of them - and the ones that do just wanted one thing to be done before they send him away. There was the ENKI system, which had been good for hires, but even those had died down a bit once the services were no longer free. To most it would've been enough, but for him?
He'd have plenty of free time since he can't sleep.
So now he was in the dark web, given access by a hacker as thanks for the work he'd done for them in the past. Not nearly as notorious as his boss, but they still gave him new knowledge. And new knowledge meant an opening to new opportunities.
Taro scrolled through the forums until eventually he came across an ad for a heist, making him raise a brow. No hurting people? That was new. But he was strong, and had experience taking care of adversaries. He also hadn't killed anyone. At least he didn't think so. Maybe that might help his case. So he clicked on the message button on the person's name and sent a reply.

GAME ON! HP: ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 100/100 So the door was unlocked after all. It just had some resistance due to the odd angle the barrier was in. Unfortunately Taro took this as an obstacle to power through, so with too much strength for the task at hand, he kicked the door down, letting it fall to the floor with a resounding BANG. He then walked in, stopping on top of the ruined piece of wood as he surveyed his surroundings.
Well the place sure looked like those houses you'd see in horror movies. Uneven floorboards, blackened couch, damaged walls. Things were broken down before he'd even touched the place. He was pretty sure it'd have the smell to match too. Good thing he didn't have a working nose.
The digital being did catch some light at the corner of his eye though. He turned his head to look at the source, but it went away before he caught sight of it, hearing tapping grow softer instead. Whatever it was, it sounded like it was going farther from him.
Taro whistled to no one in particular. "Yo. Ghost. You here?" He drew his katana before bringing it down to the sofa, blade digging into the upholstery. "I'm messing your place up. This is about time you tell me to leave right?" Pulling his sword away, the furniture's filling spilled from the pillows as he wandered further in, moving towards where he heard the clicking sound went while he lazily dragged his weapon across the floor.

GAME ON! HP: ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 100/100 Ever since the announcement was made that all services in ENKI were free for the next 24 hours, there was chaos. And why wouldn't there be? Chumps of the food chain were given a chance of a lifetime. For 24 hours even the smallest of villains had free reign to achieve their wildest dreams, lack of resources no longer holding them back from succeeding in their goals. Some used it to take territory from their competition. Others called for an escape vehicle and forged documents for when they were done with their crime. No small percentage took advantage of the savings to get even more money in their pockets.
Nothing like a good ol' bank heist to make that happen.
Taro was one in a group of grunts hired to raid the institution, ensuring that the mission went smoothly by keeping the civilians inside in line. One wrong move and it's game over for them, the client would tell the digital being. It got a small chuckle out of him. He always appreciated a good videogame pun.
One at a time they made their way in the bank, some lining up at the ATMs while others sat in the seats that littered the main area. Taro took to leaning against the wall, scrolling through his phone and looking totally not suspicious. Time passed as he entertained himself with cat videos and for a moment he wondered when it was all going to start.
Until that thought was answered in the form of his boss pulling out a gun. "Get down on the ground! This is a robbery!"
Screams from those who noticed his weapon overtook his voice, and three shots were fired in the air to bring attention back to him. "I said get down!" And just like that the patrons crouched on their knees, hands on their heads as they cried. Wow, it's just like in the movies. The guy really was living his dream. He made his way to the bank teller, flanked by two more henchmen with bags. "You, take us to your vault! Now." She didn't need to be told twice, not with the gun being pointed at her.
As they were led inside, Taro took his place in the middle of the crowd, sword drawn as a more silent threat. He was pretty sure some of them cried even louder from seeing it. Maybe this job will be easier than he thought. A shame if that were the case though. It would mean he couldn't break anything.
Oh well, there'll be more chances in the future.

GAME ON! HP: ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ ▱ ▱ 85/100 So Taro. He understood the assignment, already tipping over trash cans and kicking holes through nearby doors and benches. He couldn't provide much in terms of property damage, his Quirk not nearly as destructive as the fire guy - who was having a hard time because a water guy was present, unfortunate - but he was one of many; sheer numbers being their advantage as they spread across the park like locusts. He was just here to do his part in driving the residents out of their home.
This guy though, Guts, didn't seem to get the memo. For someone who was called the Heart of the Hummingbirds, you'd think the man would go after the leader of the raid. Though maybe he just wanted to take care of whoever's closest; humbled himself enough to not care for the glory of taking down a memorable target. Taro could respect that.
He also wished that was why he got hit. In truth, he didn't notice the fist aimed his way until it was too late.
Guts' hand connected with the grunt's face easily, and he did more than flinch back at the hit. Static spread like a wave from the contact point to the rest of his body, specks of blue shimmering before his form righted himself.
Taro turned to the vigilante, his head noticeably absent of any bruising. "Nice shot, Hummingbirds' Heart. My turn." With that he launched a fist of his own, aimed directly at the redhead's nose.

GAME ON! HP: ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 100/100 Contrary to popular belief, Taro never knew how much life he had at any given moment. There was a threshold of abuse he could endure before just expiring, that much was obvious, but there was no indication on his person of what that amount would be. At best he could guess his current HP given the damage he received already.
Which was a long-winded way of saying he might not have much left. The digital being could tell from how long it was taking the static to subside, and well, bombs just weren't something people should survive point blank. So once his body righted itself he could finally register what Retsu said and agree to it. "Nah, think I should go for a reset." It wouldn't do to test another of her creations if he could just die from a toothpick at this point. The results wouldn't be accurate.
With this in mind, Taro stood from his spot and wandered over to the rest of her bombs, taking a small one in his hand. She probably wouldn't miss this one. Making sure he was a good distance from the woman, he pulled the pin. "See ya tomorrow." And with a wave, Player One ceased to be with a bang, offering a light show to boot for his latest death.
At least temporarily.
Taro would find himself crouched down to stare at a pair of shoes one day. It was very different from what he knew Retsu to make; seemingly having more use than to just blow up the wearer. Auburn eyes turned to the engineer curiously. "So what are these?"

GAME ON! HP: ▰▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱▱ 10/100 "Rectangular-shaped hole, got it. I don't think I've ever had a piece removed from me. I usually die before that happens." Taro figured that losing a part of yourself only happened when one suffered a lot of damage over a short period of time, but the most HP he lost at once was when he got hit by a car. He just exploded on the spot then. Maybe this won't kill him as hard.
Making sure he was a good distance away from the woman - she was human after all, the blast would probably affect her more than him - Taro gave a thumbs up. "Ready." Whether the detonator was with him or with Retsu, it didn't matter. It was a bomb made to blow up and blow up it did, in the loudest fashion.
The force of it sent him into the wall, and it was a miracle the impact didn't just demolish him right there after the explosion. Or it was a testament to Retsu's skill in making an explosive that didn't outright kill him. It did leave him worse for wear though.
Where a person was supposed to be, static took its place. With the bomb vest in tattered pieces around him, all that's left was this thing barely holding itself together. It couldn't even be called a body; the silhouette was more so an ever-shifting blob. The only potential sign that it was Taro at all was the fact it was blue.
There was an outline around where his chest would be though! It was already disappearing into the glitches as his body attempted to stitch itself back together.

GAME ON! HP: ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 100/100 There were lulls between Taro's jobs. With his inability to sleep and lack of need for sustenance, he could accept work at any time when others would need some minutes for things such as "lunch". All hours of his day could be used for heists even, save for the time needed to travel between locations. He didn't exactly have a ride to call his own.
But contrary to popular belief, or because his name didn't reach enough places yet, crime did sleep. There were gaps in his days where he had nothing to do that he needed to fill with something, because he wasn't a fan of being idle. Luckily for him, Tokyo was still a massive city even when he wanted to extend his play area beyond it, so he could take some time familiarizing himself with its nooks and crannies.
One such nook would be a house tucked away, rumoured to be abandoned because it was haunted.
Did Taro believe in ghosts? Yes. After seeing everyone's collective experiences online when it came to them, how could he not? It'd be a huge waste of effort to make such an elaborate lie otherwise.
Besides, if there were no ghosts in the house, that just meant he was free to destroy it.
Once he reached the address - after losing his way for a couple turns, GPSs were confusing - Taro tested the knob on the front door. If it was unlocked, he'd let himself in. If it was locked, he'd still let himself in by kicking the door down.

GAME ON! HP: ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 100/100 No one believes Taro when he says he can't die.
Which was no surprise really. Evading death itself was an impossibility for most, especially in the day and age of Quirks that made murder and destruction easier than ever. Someone can point a finger and shoot a laser straight into another's heart, or bring down entire buildings with one well-aimed fist. While technology kept up with the ever-growing amount of strange powers as best as it could, there were still plenty of vulnerabilities in people and cities alike. Taro was just an anomaly among those people.
Which was why he felt he was the perfect test subject for one Bakuretsu. Even a few days and deaths in he gave her a thumbs up, his other hand holding what he presumed to be another vest with a bomb attached. "Okay." With that confirmation he began to put it on without fear. Or any other emotion really, other than curiosity. Taro looked to the woman as he secured the device to himself as instructed. "What's this one supposed to do?"

GAME ON! HP: ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 100/100 The Flukes were a gang made from former members of more notorious groups, exiled for one reason or another. Maybe they were too weak. Maybe they broke a rule they didn't know existed. Maybe they just didn't fit the aesthetics the leader had with their crew. So it resulted in this hodge-podge gathering of ne'er-do-wells, looking for their place in the pecking order after being left behind.
The Flukes weren't named after the luck they had - of which there were none really. They were named after the parasites, seeking to annex the territories of the cliques who kicked them out.
That was what Taro was told when he was briefed on his mission when he accepted at least, along with anyone else on ENKI who wanted in. He was to join them in taking over some derelict amusement park, currently home to the Hummingbirds. Maybe a Fluke was an old member of theirs? He didn't know, but knowing didn't seem necessary.
His job was just to cause mayhem and wreck some shit.
So when one person on the other side - Hummingbirds' leader maybe - addressed him specifically, he couldn't help but blink at the notion before giving a smile. "Nah." With a bottle in one hand and a lighter in the other, he lit the cloth poking out of the drink. A molotov cocktail. "I'm just the guy who acts first." With all his might he threw the bottle at the roof of the ticket booth, cracking it and spreading flames against the wood of the entrance. Members behind him followed suit with their own molotovs and they too soared, setting more fires. It was when one attacker controlled the flames so it rushed towards the awaiting opposition that the others began to rush through, himself included.
Let the games begin.

GAME ON! HP: ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 100/100 What a strange little device Taro ended up getting his hands on. A phone with only one app, that only functioned when he had a ring unique to himself on him. And even then, the majority of its features were locked. Something about the whole thing being in its testing phases still, so its physical distribution was only part of its initial setup. Wack.
But it was fine. He signed up and entered the services he could provide before ignoring it altogether, continuing his life as he did. It wasn't until he smashed his sword into another windshield one day that something in his pocket beeped. He dug into his pocket for his phone.
Expect it wasn't his burner that was chiming. It was ENKI.
With curiosity piqued Taro sat on the hood of the car he was breaking and opened the app. A message that signified free services. Twenty-four hours of mayhem with paid endorsements. Then there was another ping.
Then another. And another.
Several calls for his own aid were made, all waiting for his response. Titles, descriptions, time, rewards. Kinda like a quest system. A scream emanated across the parking lot he resided in as he read through each one with a smile. Choosing to accept a few, he hopped off the car and ran.
Time to get to work.

GAME ON! HP: ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 100/100 The assassin would receive no further messages from the client. Maybe they became preoccupied, or no more words needed to be said. Who knows? In either case the goal was clear: Player One still needed to die.
Finding him was the easy part.
For all the stress and torture whomever was unfortunate enough to encounter the reaper was under, their intel was sound. The digital entity was at an outdoor parking lot in the dead of night, walking atop each vehicle without a care in the world. Ironic really, given the fact he was killed by a car mere days ago. What might've not been mentioned however was he wasn't alone.
"Hey, get down from there!" a voice hissed. "You're gonna trip the alarm!"
The callout came from a woman with vibrant streaks in her hair and a leather jacket; an immediate standout despite the crime she was involved in. She worked on a car that a man was under, both salvaging parts to sell to anyone who'll buy. It only took seconds before they're on to the next car.
Taro, only able to dismantle things in several little pieces, was hired to act as bodyguard for the duo. He stepped off the vehicle and sauntered towards them, head tilting curiously. "I thought I was supposed to be on lookout?"
The woman clicked her tongue. "Which you'll do from the ground. You're like a giraffe anyway."
All Taro could do what blink. "What's a giraffe?"
The other half of the duo poked his head out from under the car. "You don't know? They're the tallest animal in the world! If you don't take Quirks into account that is-"
"Oh for fuck's sake."
Amidst the bickering, eyes were turned away from surroundings, and the group were none-the-wiser to the man lurking in the dark.

GAME ON! HP: ▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰▰ 100/100 There were exceptions, and there were whatever the hell the bandaged assassin received on his burner phone. Which was nothing at first. In the several days the man spent completing other jobs, he would never get a reply from the client who wanted Player One off the map. The conclusion he'd likely reach was he was getting ghosted; having taken on a task so easy that the person who made the request just decided not to pay up. The buyer was a conman through and through, and would become the next target especially if this wasn't the first time they didn't hold up their end of the bargain. But then came the impossible. No it isn't? The hell you talking about? Fantasma would then receive a photo of a man. Blurry as it was as the subject was moving, the long cyan tail would strike as familiar. Do you think I'm stupid? One of my men sent me this today! Do your fucking job and take care of this asshole!!! At least the client had the decency to send the hitman coordinates of Player One's last appearance, but that was about all he'd receive unless he pressed further.
