Alexandrei's mouth slams shut as he watches Felix kneel to the ground and continue speaking, the astronomer musing over Felix's words. Keep him safe. Yes, keep him safe. In the end, he could only try— but given his loss of thought, loss of purpose, Alexandrei still doesn't know if he has it in him to try and exist or become such a person. He's lived such a monotonous life ever since his amnesia began. Alexandrei accepts Felix's handshake with a blank stare as he thinks. Could he ever be such a selfless person like he once was again?[break][break]

At the sound of Auden's voice, Alexandrei immediately loosens his grip, snapping back to the present moment, murmuring a quiet apology. "Careful," he mutters quickly as Auden shifting made him appear to be more in pain. He gives the phoenix's words an attentive moment of pondering.[break][break]

Is it something he wanted?[break][break]

"I..." Alexandrei pauses, uncertain. "... do not know if that is something I would want." He admits.[break][break]

"Some memories are invaluable." He continues. "They come and go, change in shape and form, and become something else far from what really happened. Some are horrific, and only exist to be forgotten. How I've forgotten most of my life, apart from key moments, and a handful of people... surely there must have been a reason for that. To witness everything I've known disappear, almost as if I were someone in the audience rather than being there myself, then... is it really something I should remember?" Alexandrei sighs. "Is the past... is it really worth holding onto so much?"

Alexandrei pauses as to not say anymore thoughtless words. What did happen? As far as he recalled, Auden had mention romantic partnership but also how love could be familial rather than sexual in nature, and that bond was unbreakable. But was it, really? He had spent his entire life with his twin brother, they had been the best of friends. But it still ended up the way it did, and there wasn't any changing that.[break][break]

Perhaps, it was the grief of remembering that fact that consumed him so wholly in that moment that he didn't notice something as vital as to his friend being physically gutted right before him.[break][break]

"I..." For the first time in a while, Alexandrei seems to be at a loss for words. "I think... I remembered something. My memory is spotty, and I think talking with Auden triggered something deeply recessive in my mind, something that I had forgotten— tried to forget. The resurgence of such a memory baffled me, so much that I didn't realise what was happening to me, or whatever was happening around me. It left me vulnerable, and Auden too." Alexandrei looks from Felix to Auden. "Auden mentioned that bonds are more than just surface view. If you let them, they tie deeply down below, where no one can see them, or no one else can recognise them. Familial love is the same thing. What you and him have, as brothers, I must have once had too." The astronomer stares at the floor. "But I'm not so sure now."[break][break]

Alexandrei thinks that Auden's tone towards his brother reminds him of his own relationship with his deceased brother. He remembers, after their vigilante days were over and Twin Eclipse was established, them bickering like— well, brothers would. They would have their disputes, angst in their heart and fragility in their minds, but were joint to the hip and valued each other more than they would anyone, or anything, else. If anything, with the way Felix reacted to him, he's worried that he might become between their relationship.[break][break]

He needs to clear the air, and do something about it before they start yelling at each other. But with Auden kissing his hand, Alexandrei staring at him, he feels as though no matter what he might say, something would set them off.[break][break]

The astronomer turns to meet Felix's eyes with his own, the moment between him and Auden gone and a complete look of placidity in his own azure-blue gaze unlike the tiniest tinge of softness that had been there prior. He makes no effort to move his hand, only keeping it there because Auden seemed intent on holding onto him, clearing his throat. "I feel as though we started off on the wrong foot, Felix." Alexandrei says carefully. "Please, tell me if I had said or done something offensive to you when we met."[break][break]

He doesn't get it himself. Only questions and answers will make him understand, and with the look of genuine curiousity on Alexandrei's face with no shadow of malice, it's clear what his intentions are.

Alexandrei could relate. With the way people crowded around Auden, searching for his affection only in a sexual sense, it reminded of how selfish he used to let the Hero Association be with him. When the wartime came along with quirks, people searched for vigilantes to fight back against the people who dared to abuse their quirks, people who would lay down their lives for others selflessly. He had been one of those people. And what had it gotten him? Two dead family members, a dead sister-in-law, and a lifetime of misery. [break][break]

An object to be molded how others saw fit. He didn't want that for Auden.[break][break]

He's so distracted by thinking again he hardly notices when Auden pulls Alexandrei in closer, causing him to snap back to reality and look sharply at the phoenix. For a moment, he had honestly thought that Auden might try and plunge a knife in him— he was a hero with eyes on his back for far too long. He still has those reflexes.[break][break]

Though, he noticeably calms down when Auden makes no move to do anything and keeps talking to him, and he's briefly reminded of the night they met on New Year's Eve. A million thoughts run through his mind in that moment, yet all he can say is "thank you" before closing his eyes again, sighing through his nose. It's like a week's worth of shadows are dispersed by the light coming from Auden's fire, taking note of his heartbeat. Eventually, he speaks up. "I suppose I should clear up my misunderstanding between your brother and I." He says. "Would he be fit to enter, or would that be too presumptuous of me to ask?"

He understands Felix not wanting to talk about him, but Alexandrei frowns when Auden mentions his worry. Surely he could have mentioned that nothing had happened to Alexandrei? Felix should have at least said that much even if he did have his "opinions" about the astronomer. "The public was ever inconsiderate of other people's plight," Alexandrei says. "they merely took photos of the event before I blocked them off and the paramedics showed up. They did not let me come with you." [break][break]

As he listens to Auden speak, his eyes close, tense shoulders relaxing somewhat. He seems to take what Auden says to heart and the fangs of his bad conscious lessen their grip on his heart slightly, though he opens them again in confusion as the phoenix finishes. "What do you mean punish?" He replies, brows furrowing. "If anything, I should have been fired from UAU in my negligence."[break][break]

He dips his head. What did he say to Felix? What he thought was appropriate, simply because it was the truth, but evident by the way his face still stung it was the wrong thing to say. Maybe talking with Auden will clear it up. "Why I let this happen. I said 'I was thinking', because truthfully, that's what I was doing. After you mentioned what an ideal partner was..." He swallows. "... I could not help but think of my brother, from a long time ago. He and I spent every waking moment together before he passed. When I thought of him, I felt as though I was being dragged into the deep ocean, an abyss I couldn't wake up from."[break][break]

His other hand raises to his forehead subconsciously, a movement he doesn't realise he's done until he feels his own fingers dig into his skin. "Everything around me disappeared. Everyone. I couldn't find you, so I reached out to you. And that... monster attacked you after that, taking advantage of both of us."[break][break]

His mouth opens slightly at Auden's actions, clear evidence of Alexandrei's surprise, but he ultimately does nothing to stop the phoenix from... doing whatever he was to his hand. Whatever made him feel better. Eventually he does pull away, but only to hold onto Auden's hand. Auden had seemed to had like that before in the brief time they'd had together before he had gotten stabbed. Alexandrei's gaze drifts away from his. He still feels guilt for letting what happened, happen. [break][break]

"I feel like you should be more worried about yourself," he says gruffly. "Felix said you weren't healing as fast as you should be."[break][break]

There's a pang of something in his stomach as he hardens his resolve and drags his eyes back to Auden's. It's not the guilt he's solemnly familiar with— it's something else. He feels... alert when he's looking at Auden. What is that supposed to be? He's not entirely sure. "At least you have someone looking after you," Alexandrei says. It's obvious Alexandrei feels nothing malicious towards Felix after the latter hitting him. "clearly I wasn't quick enough to realise what was going on. If he had been there instead of me, then this wouldn't have happened."[break][break]

Though his voice is solid and unwavering, his eyes dart away from Auden's again. He wants to look, but anywhere at Auden. Guilt was like a spider crawling its way up his spine with icy-cold feelers, making him unsure of himself. It's about the only emotion he can fully recognise— after all, he's completely riddled with it from killing both his twin brother and nephew. "At the very least, I deserve more than a slap for what I did to you and said to Felix."

Oh, how his misuse of words got him so frequently in trouble. He supposes he deserves that. [break][break]

It stings. It's the most he's felt since Auden got injured. He simply turns to listen to Felix as he berates Alexandrei, feeling the burning stare of the medical staff nearby, shock evident on their faces. He can take being shouted at, but he would much rather not start a fight in here where they could both be thrown out, and with Auden left alone, he would be vulnerable. Felix mutters under his breath and the astronomer stares after him as he moves aside, him not saying anything in response. He can't bring himself to.[break][break]

Auden was hurt because of him. He deserves more than just a slap on the cheek.[break][break]

Felix's words ring in his head as he opens the door to Auden's room. Obviously, from what Felix had said and Auden's actions, it was clear that Auden did indeed seem to value him for reasons he didn't understand— and he wasn't sure if he ever would. What had he ever done to deserve a friend like Auden? He was hardly the most eye-catching person, he was hardly the most emotive, or talkative. He was a bare slate to be written upon however anyone else desired. He truly, truly doesn't understand anything. At all.[break][break]

Alexandrei pulls up a chair from the nearby table to sit beside Auden, taking in the phoenix's weakened form. Felix has said the recovery process was going far slower than he would have liked, and Alexandrei can see why. He sighs through his nose. He's failed completely on two parameters; as a friend, and as a faculty of their university. How is he supposed to come back from this? He's already received an earful from the other staff, but they know not everyone has a sixth sense like an owl's alertness— he was ultimately pardoned due to that fact. But new people look down on him.[break][break]

"Auden." His own voice unwillingly distracts himself from his voice. He doesn't say anymore to try and get Auden's attention. If Auden wants to talk to Alexandrei, it's up to him.

He's not happy. That's an understatement. Felix looks like he's about to rip Alexandrei a new one.[break][break]

Alexandrei supposes he should have asked about Auden, but given Felix's current temperament, he doesn't want to overstep his boundaries. Auden and Felix are siblings— they're far more bonded than him and Auden are, and to the astronomer it looked like he was entirely unwanted here. Should he just leave? He wants to see Auden, but not if it would do more good than bad. He frowns slightly as Felix continues to list off more of their misforgivings; what he should have done, what he should have done better. Why Auden shouldn't be here.[break][break]

Why is he here? Why didn't he protect him more? Logically, the only thing Alexandrei can say is, "I was thinking."[break][break]

That was how his panic attack had appeared to him. Alexandrei merely thought he was being dragged into the recesses of his quirk once more, an event that would make him forget about what had happened in the past month, maybe even more, something that was so nonchalant and normal to him that it didn't appear wrong. He truly didn't see anything amiss there, as awful as it was. His abnormal was his normal. His "thinking" had gotten in the way of his normal alertness, as it always did.

The moment the paramedics moved in, Alexandrei felt the world around him come back into a harsh, cold reality. They hadn't given him the time of day; apparently the filming from the public allowed them to conclude what had happened and they didn't want his testimony. That confused him even more so than the stabbing. Then they had left without hope of him reconciling with Auden or any idea where he was going, leaving Alexandrei in the dark. Since then, he had spent most of his time staring at the wall of his apartment or office, thinking.[break][break]

His pencil tip snaps.[break][break]

Oh. He had been writing in his journal again, yes, taking down every detail that had happened. Them talking about ice cream. Them talking about Agnis. Them talking about Auden and Chloe. Them... talking. That was all it had really been, right? Talking? Or was he missing the bigger picture again? He sneezes. Someone's thinking about him, it seems.[break][break]

His phone buzzes. It's Felix. He doesn't know if Auden's brother contacting him is a good thing or not.[break][break]

Alexandrei arrives at the hospital within the hour. He has his black attire with his turtleneck and leather jacket again— the outfit he had worn with Auden had promptly been thrown out. It felt... bad, looking at those clothes. Like an air of doubt surrounded him whenever he saw it. He can say the same for when he sees Felix standing outside Auden's room, tense like a lion about to pounce. He was acting like Cerberus, a guard dog to the phoenix.[break][break]

"Felix." Alexandrei greets. Unlike with Auden, he shows absolutely no dregs of emotion, simply standing in front of him.

Not his first time getting stabbed? Alexandrei doesn't know if it's possible, but his frown deepens even further, him lowering his phone from his ear.[break][break]

He's mildly curious, but with his better judgement he knows it's not a good time to ask, as much as he wants to distract Auden from the actual knife sticking into his gut. Current events have pushed his heavy feelings to the back of his head for now— as much as he's confused about whatever just happened to him, Auden took first priority. How else was he supposed to react to that? He wouldn't walk away now, no. As reduced as he was in intelligence when it came to people, he knew that what Auden had done — actually sacrificing himself to save Alexandrei — was beyond the scope of most, if not almost all people.[break][break]

Who do you think you are, doing a thing like that? The astronomer closes his eyes, inhaling deeply to right himself as sirens echo in the distance. When he opens them again, he stares down at their still-enclosed hands, despite all that occurred. He allows Auden to rest his head on his arm, him moving into a more comfortable position for the phoenix. Alexandrei sees more now. [break][break]

"You still insist on spewing nonsense, despite whatever situation we come across." Alexandrei's face ultimately doesn't move much, but there's still a small scowl on his lips. "I should have paid more attention. Losing control is... unbecoming of me."[break][break]

He can imagine Felix will be mad. Upset. Beyond distressed, even. But with the paramedics' footsteps echoing outside his quirk, Alexandrei can only be glad for one thing.[break][break]

That they're both still here.

It was like he was watching everything that was happening from outside his own body. An unparalleled feeling of anguish suddenly overtook Alexandrei as he grips Auden's hand tightly, his other held up to his forehead once more, holding it as an angry headache seized his head. Alexandrei was incapable of panicking— at least, he thought he was. Was this his own version of panic? Was this what it felt like to be out of control? How could this happen? He thought he was past the point of no return. [break][break]

The silence followed by gasps and screaming doesn't shake him, but the abnormal warmth on his and Auden's hand makes him look down, seeing his fingers stained red. Blood? Oh, no, no no no. Not again.[break][break]

A stalker. What are they doing? They just stabbed Auden— they're insane, unpredictable, and they're screeching words that fall upon Alexandrei's deaf ears as they run at Auden once more, and he realises Auden had sacrificed himself to save him. Something at the back of his head says it reminds him of his own brother, and with his placid emotions filled to the cup's brink, they overflow. He sees clearly.[break][break]

Surging blue fire erupts from Alexandrei's right arm as the Aether rushes forth and slams the stalker into the ground, the astronomer fully intending on strapping them to the earth until someone called the police and they arrived. As for everyone else— he can only glare at them as more of his quirk disperses and puts up a protective wall, shielding them both from the crowd's view as he kneels down at Auden's side. With the black, murky starriness of the Aether, no one can see what's happening.[break][break]

"Easy," he whispers to Auden, a feeble attempt to calm himself and the phoenix. "they're gone now." He's still holding onto Auden's hand as he inspects the knife in Auden's abdomen, grimacing slightly. "Don't pull that out. Okay?" He takes off his jacket, holding it around the knife and pressing down. "I'm sorry. Can you hold onto this and press down while I call an ambulance?" [break][break]

Alexandrei's making absolutely zero effort to talk about what just happened. In his eyes, if he mentions it, Auden might panic more.
