Babel's rain fell down upon Japan. Its anomalous cloud, having yet been charted by the Japanese's collective consciousness, bore down upon Tokyo, its acid rain sizzling against the pavement and its gales ripping through buildings. Those who braved its eye were forced to their knees, with their skin begging, and even clawing, at their bearers, wishing to be anywhere but in front of the demon.

But the rain didn't fall the same everywhere. In some sects, the sky was clear of Babel. There, where the sun shone on the city, citizens walked at their leisure. No rain fell down to burn their skin, no gales would sweep them from their feet, and no destruction would plunge them down into early graves. Along this street, the people basked in the light, going about their days ignorant of the storm the rest of the city suffered from.

Though free of its darkness, however, the winds carried the rain to this place, regardless of the lacking appearance thereof. While the heroes toiled and burned closer to its epicenter, their unguarded wards became plagued with the once hesitant criminal underbelly.

The focus on the heart had left criminals to more brazenly do as they pleased.

"Stop that man!" came a shout.

[break][break]

The speaker was an older man, whose hair had only recently begun to turn silver, crumpled on the street. Or, rather, he seemed unable to pull himself off of the pavement.

Running away from the collapsed man and broken store door, a hooded figure shoved his way through the thinning crowds. He dressed in a way that covered every part of his skin, even his hair being pulled back into his hood and away from sight. Of his concealed visage and its lacking signifiers of personality, there remained a single idea that marked this thug as something more than the standard.

His eyes were hidden behind a Colombina mask, his expression marked in its specific concealment of it. Its gold, more than the blacks of his clothes, glittered in the sunlight, specks of its gaze following him as he made his break. A backpack swung along his arm, shifting onto his back as he moved.

The robbed store was one "Yamada's Pawn Shop."

二度目の出会い。 Despite the storm sweeping through the city, it was a sunny day in this nook of Tokyo. Besides, it was always raining someplace else. Shion paced through the populated sidewalk, merely a face in the crowd as he absent-mindedly munched on a Meron-pan while looking at text messages on his phone. It was a day off for him where nothing in particular from school needed to be done, so he had taken his chance to go out for a walk through town. His thoughts wandered through many possible routes he could take as time went on. He could go to Ueno Park, maybe Akihabara or Nichoume to have fun, but another possible destination evaded his mind. Oh, of course! He'd definitely have to stop by Ms. Li's shop! "Stop that man!" The shout made Shion's head snap towards it's direction of origin as if it were spring-operated, his eyes filling with a need to find out what was going on. Sure, his plans to visit an old friend would have to be put on hold, but sometimes duty calls- even on your day off! "Come on, Toto!" He'd exclaim to the alien friend accompanying him with a determined smile, who immediately lowered themselves to the ground so Shion could hop on with a sick cartwheel just to show off a little. Their appendages spreading, the two took flight over the crowd of people- quickly catching up to the obvious man trying to push his way through the crowd. Pff, what an idiot- all that disguise does is make him stand out! Though, the odd lack of heroes in such a densely populated area was odd. There'd be several patrols usually, especially during the middle of the day like right now. "HOLD. IT. RIGHT. THEEEEEEEERE!!" Callisto would suddenly hear behind him as what couldn't be described as anything but a witch on a broomstick grabbed the fabric of his hoodie with one hand, switching gears to go towards the other direction. The criminal would be yanked backwards, into a tug-of-war that couldn't have come at a worse time for both of them. Callisto Tengoku

Disguises were simple enough in theory. By concealing one's face and other such markers, one could effectively divide oneself from their actions — or, in some cases, provide the necessary appearance to lower a target's guard. Disguises provided a great deal of utility, far beyond just hiding an identity alone.

Of the many reasons they could be employed, Callisto's was not dedicated to the act of stealth. Though it efficiently concealed who he was, there was another reason for its distinctive appearance: it was an act of warning. Under most other circumstances, Callisto would have preferred something more akin to the rest of the people along the side of the road, to blend into the crowd and slip by. But, on this occasion, when the world had worse problems to deal with, the criminal declared a simple idea:

"I'm right here, but I am not worth your time."

It may have further prevented civilians from being lost in the confusion, but the Venetian didn't mark that as a point in his favor.

As a call came behind him, and a hand gripped his woolen hoodie, the man's left arm quickly shot backward, trying to grasp whoever had the guts to mess with him. With their wrist in his hand and a twist of him inward, Callisto lunged an open palm to meet the stomach of his target.

He acted without concern for who the target of his attack was. It was only halfway through his motions that his eyes fell upon his target — a familiar face he'd assumed he would never see again. But, as surely as he was a criminal, he would strike the student.

"Sorry," came the voice. As the man pulled his arm away, he took a step back. "Don't follow me, kid — it's not worth the trouble."

Turning to flee, Callisto tried to continue his sprint away from the scene and, now, Shion as well.

二度目の出会い。 This wasn't the first time Shion had been struck in the stomach, and it definitely wasn't the last. Despite his healthy form, any tension built in the youth's muscles were ineffective against the martial skill of the masked man. To say that he took a tumble from the attack was an understatement. The pavement was unforgiving as it scraped against white skin, leaving negligible cuts across Shion's limbs through his layer of clothing as he hit the ground. Ugh. . . But this wasn't enough to deter him, far from it. Shion immediately stood up through the pain once the force exerted by Callisto halted his trip across the ground, reaching out a hand with a scowl. Toto obliged, falling into the youth's hands as he began speaking through clenched teeth. "Oh yes it is-" Time and time again, he would count on the determination that was within him to right what wrongs he could in this world. He'd be strained, his body and soul would be hurt. . . but when one's road ahead didn't stretch into the horizon, it was an easy choice to make. "If I don't stop you-" Shion reared back with Toto in hand as if he were an Olympic javelineer, oddly aiming not at Callisto through the crowd of people, but rather upwards to the sky. The sun, ever-strong as his will, burned it's circular form into his retina- but he could stand looking towards the bright glory for a few seconds. "Then who here's gonna do it, huh?!" He yelled out, focusing all of his kiai to his throw of the alien weapon that was no longer in his hands. With great force, Toto was thrown into the air. Taking advantage of the extra momentum granted to them by arcing downwards in the sky, they began a dive-bomb that homed in towards the criminal- threatening to spear them from above if ignored. There was almost a noise akin to roaring as the projectile approached, warning those around them that this was no weapon made by human hands. Callisto Tengoku

A petty crook was no excuse for wasting one's times. As the thug himself thought, marking his presence as an indicator of tossing away such thoughts, his scheme was of no consequence. Petty theft, petty vandalism — they would soon be thrown away all the same. Mr. Yamada would have his insurance, as most men as he did, and the stolen good would soon be replaced by many more who were desperate to pawn off their belongings.

The cycle of debt would only continue. Others would have to put their treasures up to continue their meager lives, and they would, too, have to pay so they wouldn't be sold away. Though they might claw themselves up from the waste, the debt of their cherished belongings — the locket of a deceased love one, a ring from a late husband — would drag them even further down into the filth, further away from happiness, as they reached for even a sliver of mercy.

But they would receive none. They would sink without any eyes to follow them down, left alone in the darkness of the waste; but Laoro would not sink. He would not accept that place, that destiny, nor would he ever succumb to having his life disposed of so pettily.

He stood there, having come to a halt at the sight of the witch hanging high above him, and stared blankly from behind his mask. His shoe scraped against the pavement as he came to a halt, facing the shrieker and his javelined tool — an emitter-type quirk, he assumed. He recalled their pet "Toto" from their previous encounter, but did he also have the power to create those odd, flying brooms? If so, was his limit only a single one at a time? Were it otherwise, the criminal thought, would they have not sent a swarm after him?

It must have had a limitation; either by a means of resource, mental ability to control only so much, or an effective tax upon their body, their scope was limited. If he was to assume by the context of their "friend," singular, perhaps it could only manifest as a single broom at a time. Whether or not it produced the tool itself or used outside materials, Callisto was still unsure.

Laoro lowered his body to the ground, bending his knees closer to the pavement, with a steamy breath. The broom was faster than he was — had it not been so announced by its wielder, the Venetian was sure he'd have endured a worser fate. Perhaps the boy was still green behind the ears; nevertheless, opportunity was opportunity however gracelessly it arose, and he would not be one to waste it.

As it dived for him, the criminal's body tensed up. Just as its speed would make it an effective weapon, so too would it narrow its vision to the point of impact — to change its angle at such a stage, he thought, would be near impossible. And so, as the broom came to impact the man, an unseen spark crackled from the bottom of his backfoot as he leapt towards Shion.

By combining the strength of his body and the repelling force of his quirk, he could, for a brief moment, outpace even the divebombing broom — and, with the two used in conjunction, he could cross the gap between himself and his opponent in a flash with an airborne leg raised to the sky as he simultaneously avoided the weapon.

With the twist of his core and the swing of his leg downwards, the criminal tried to strike Shion upon the shoulder, hoping to crush him beneath his weight.

"There's plenty of people who can stop me, but I won't let a kid like you be one of them."

二度目の出会い。 [Now Playing: City] ". . . !" Shion, left beneath the growing darkness of Laoro's shadow, was eclipsed as well in speed as from the sun above them both. His agape expression at the inhuman speed the villain managed to dodge his attack, was due to awe more than fear of the impact that was approaching him. He's fast?! This had to be the work of some quirk- no reaction, however unhuman, couldn't possibly alter momentum so quickly and mindlessly. There must have been some kind of artificial force which allowed him to avoid Toto so easily. That was when he realized, he had hesitated. He couldn't dodge this, no. The outcome was so unexpected that the window for moving out of the way was already far gone- the youth would be forced to block or take this hit in a way which didn't flat-out K.O. him. Laoro's heavier leg was met by Shion's forearm. The strike didn't crush him, but it managed to push him down with how much force was being exerted. But the youth wouldn't be the only one down on the ground- in fact, Shion moved with the force of the kick, suddenly grabbing onto Laoro's leg as he tried to pull him off balance. His arm and back hurt, so did his stomach still. But he couldn't give up here. Shion thought he still had a chance to win this and would keep going until his limit was reached. Amidst the chaos of the two fighting, the people on the street they were in a state of disorder. Some were running away, others were watching from a distance while filming the both of them on their phones. Most were taking cover so as not to fall victim by either of their attacks. I. . . I could say the same back at you! Shion thought to himself before taking an action that was banned in many forms of martial arts. Grappling Laoro's leg while on the ground, he closed his eyes and bit the criminal in the calf with as much force as he could muster. He didn't like doing something to violent and uncivilized, but the youth was already running short of options. During the time of this whole struggle between the two, the alien creature was already within a meter of Laoro's head, preparing to swing down and hit it like a bat would a pinata.  Callisto Tengoku

Callisto's leg flew true, striking down upon the younger man with the full force put into his twist. Rung and gripped by the guard, however, he slipped along with Shion's movements, swinging slightly as his leg was grappled to the floor. Regardless of his outcome, Callisto felt his blow to be effective — he was sure of it. How much so, he couldn't say, but he didn't need it to be definitive.

For however much damage it dealt, nothing could compare to the sudden flash of his movement. To have a still target, a few meters away at a distance, suddenly flash before one's eyes surely wouldn't be a scar to quickly fade, nor a wound so quick to close. It was a chink of the criminal's design, one to rend Shion's defenses apart piece by piece.

However, he supposed that assurance came from the perspective of a martial artist first, a criminal second. From that vantage point, he could assume a number of standards by which he could contort himself around his foes. Though in the mind of someone who held no care for such ideas, there glistened pearls of options not regularly seen beneath the brain's waves.

It was so that Callisto stomached a shout, tightening his chest and slamming his fist against the pavement. This brat had bitten him! Like a feral dog, he'd sunk his teeth through his pant leg and into his flesh! Callisto's muscles pushed back against Shion's mouth, flexing as he tried to tear into him. Though, for not much longer than it had sunk into him, a sudden numbing feeling traveled from the criminal's flesh and against Shion's teeth. As though a pair of hands gripped his mouth and gaped his jaw open, an invisible pair of parallel forces pushed away from each other. In this same moment, the energy in Laoro's leg would push him away from Shion's mouth, unintentionally evading the attack from the broom above and rolling him across the sidewalk from his combatant.

Stumbling up with the momentum of his move, the pushing forces in Shion's jaw would lighten; however, to replace it, a pulling force would attempt to bring him towards the criminal, who reeled back an open hand and tried to slam Shion's head into the pavement. He'd put his full weight into the blow, even lowering himself to the floor as he tried to bury their head into the concrete.

"...Don't get up," came the voice with a sigh. His face would still be pulled towards Laoro's hand as he slammed it again. "It'll be better if you don't."

二度目の出会い。 As his attack of desperation was cut short, the upstart hero still managed to be surprised at the invisible force which forced him away from the criminal. The invisible hand pushing him felt akin to the resistance one experienced when two magnets of the same polarity were forced towards each other, only for the space between them to stay the same no matter how hard the human hands pushed. Shion remembered doing that as a child. So, the masked man's power was to create a repulsing force on anything he touched? His brain went into overdrive as the stages of observing, theorizing, and then planning were walked up like a series of steps in the youth's mind. Though his body was busy twisting itself so Shion could get back on his feet smoothly. Then, he realized that observation was still not over. As Laoro himself got up, Shion was in a crouched state, one of his hands on the ground while he tried to catch a breath. But like a feather ripped from a bird, the youth found himself forcibly being pulled towards the criminal, who was visibly winding up an arm to bring him down to the earth once more. It was inevitable. He couldn't resist the magnetic force pulling him alone. Resist as he might, Shion was forced to stumble towards the taller man that was barely looking worse for wear. The arm came down, and a shadow was cast over eyes that were usually bright mirrors of the sun above. CLANG Laoro's arm would feel as if it had collided with a metal pipe. Having had plenty of time to move autonomously, Toto only had to speed forwards for a second to intercept the blow directed towards their companion thanks to the small distance the opponent had traveled in the past minute. In a fluid motion, the alien would have attempted to wrap their body around Laoro's arm like a constrictor, immediately exerting force to pull them towards the ground.  "Why, so you can keep stealing from innocent people?!" Shion took the chance to quickly raise one leg forwards and try kicking Laoro in the stomach, taking into consideration that he could be sent flying again in a moment's notice. So he can attract and repel things he touches. . . ? How can I fight someone like him?? Callisto Tengoku

Ah, right — the broom. Though, as the object circled about his figure, pulling him towards the ground, Callisto took it in silence. He'd assumed their form to be stale; in retrospect, there was no reason to figure such to be the case. He'd seen the creature — the "friend," as Shion had put it — in a different, harmless state before. With it now taking the form of a broom, he should have found no reason to assume it could only operate under either of these two modes.

Not that he figured it mattered regardless.

Shion's kick landed true, squarely striking the criminal in the stomach. The criminal, however, made no effort or cough to their blows — not against something so wimpy. Instead, as the foot struck against him, Laoro's free hand darted forward to grasp Shion by his ankle, withstanding the blow purposefully to steal his true target.

"If tha's how you see i', I won't hol' i' agains' you." Laoro's grip on Shion's leg tightened. A blade coated the man's words, speaking through gritted teeth as his accent bled from his gums. "I won't hol' a'ythin' from you."

In this one moment, two things took place. The first coated the inside coil of the broom with a charge, coursing from Laoro's flesh into a thin, imperceptible layer — to the human eye — of a magnetic charge. In the second, Callisto's flesh was once again revitalized with a charge of its own.

In this instance, however, he made a specific choice: For both himself and Toto, the criminal gave a negative charge.

The broom's grip on Laoro drastically shifted as the force of magnetism pushed out from its inside; though not enough to necessarily free himself, assuming the creature remained adamant in sticking to him, it would give him the freedom of movement he needed.

Being so close to the criminal, Shion would feel the teeth in his skull pulled down towards them, dragging the boy along with them. In the same breath, and with the support of his freed hand and shoulder against the pavement, Laoro would jab his closest leg up to kick Shion in the mouth. However, just as the force would send Shion away, the same magnetic pull would bring him again; this time, it would be met by Laoro's second leg in a curved swing, aimed to reverse their positions.

終ノ空 Dread took over Shion as the kick changed absolutely nothing. Why wasn't the criminal reeling back? Why wasn't he doubling over in pain. Oh no. He may not have matched the youth in speed- but Shion had clearly bet on the wrong horse. If Laoro's stomach could take a horizontal stomp from him with no struggle, his physical toughness would have to have been several times that of the upstart hero. This was when he realized, as soon as the accented words mixed with anger reached his ear. . . He was going to be in for a world of pain. Toto's grip was loosened. A price they paid for momentarily forgetting how Laoro's quirk activated. And with that freedom given to him, the criminal's kick hit exactly where it was aimed. Shion felt a sharp pain reverb through his jaw, and then his cranium. It felt like a spiked bat was hitting hard enough to make Shion taste metal. But it wasn't over. In a motion Shion could only see as judo-like, the ground which Laoro had occupied quickly impacted the youth. Or rather, he was flung towards the ground. "Guh-" With the air knocked out of him, all Shion could do was regret his prior course of attack as his tongue slowly began tasting red. Though, he still wasn't to the point of regretting the fight itself. This wasn't like the matches he had in training. His opponent was treating him as a proper threat, and taking him down like one. In a way, it could be interpreted as a violent respect. Callisto Tengoku

Callisto couldn't have imagined another path towards victory. Both Toto and Shion had him beat at regular speed; where he could only keep up in short bursts, they could individually outpace him. To face them both simultaneously, however, would be a feat even further more complicated. For his limited resources, Callisto could only regard them with the utmost gravity he could muster. He couldn't lose here. He couldn't go out like this.

And with the grace of luck falling on his side, Callisto wouldn't. As he slammed Shion's skull into the pavement, his foot crunching the skull into the pavement and shocking Shion again, Laoro was convinced. He knew what he had to do. It would never be what he wanted to do — it never was when it went so far; there wasn't a purpose in that kind of fight. But this wasn't about purpose; Callisto had his side, and Shion had his. When it came down to it, Callisto knew where he belonged, and who he belonged with, but wouldn't accept the place behind bars.

Callisto's foot lifted from Shion's face. As the magnetic pull again lifted Shion from the ground, the criminal's foot would crash down on the student's skull. Again and again, like a cascading waterfall, he would deliver stomp after stomp — as many as he could manage — and plunge his weight behind every blow.

The red sea that had flowed out from the point of impact was clear enough for that. But before even more damage could be done, a barrier had formed between the criminal's sole and Shion's head. In an act of self-preservation, Toto used what opportunity they had to wrap themselves around the head in a protective fashion, making use of their innate durability to block any further attacks. The alien had formed a stone which Laoro could not break. Not at his current level of power. Toto's eyes faced towards his general direction, emotionless, and without judgement. There was no hate, malice, or any human emotion to be seen in their eyes. Just like on that day when Callisto held him in his arms, that morning where the sky was just as blue as today. Laoro's foot held his foot aloft. In between his bloodied sole and the mess from which it dripped of, the alien creature coiled around its progenitor's skull. Only his head was protected, and in those eyes looking back upon him, Laoro stilled. The rest of the witch's body was barren of shields. An exposed chest, a pair of wimpy arms, and a set of legs still intact. They didn't bleed. Not like the fountain coming from between the temples.

Laoro rested his foot again as his balance. He panted as he lowered it to the pavement — the unoccupied pavement — pressing it again on solid ground. The crowd watched on, some still recording the scene as it played. Laoro's bag swung from his back. Though it was designed for two straps, one had long since frayed before even this encounter, leaving it to hang loosely from the criminal's shoulder. Now that Laoro steadied, however, with his breath returning to a human's rhythm, so too did the bag.

The criminal adjusted the strap, tightening it, as he looked upon the crowd. From deep within the shadows of his mask, hidden away by the glittering gold that hid his features, storms hissed at the bystanders. His gaze twisted towards them, following their inching movements. Some stepped away from the scene, others trembled, and a greater more froze outright.

Laoro's gaze wandered about the crowd. The air in their lungs caught as his gaze choked them.

"At least," his voice came, scalding in its exhaust, "the kid fought."

With a hiss underneath his crouch and the blur of his outline, Laoro disappeared. None amongst the crowd witnessed where he'd gone, and none of their eyes caught wind of where he might have been. Amongst them, Mr. Yamada sulked. The tubby man's fists balled at his sides, and as blood continued to trickle from the youth, he screamed at the sky.

Callisto dragged his feet along. The blood beneath his shoe dried, cracking and flaking as he walked along. The alleyway, coming from the rooftop he'd left to, carried the voices to him as a murmur. Tokyo's screams were louder, but here, in this place, Callisto could hear the hushed calls.

"Damn brat." Pulling the mask from his face, Callisto dropped the hood to his shoulders. His prickly hairs stood again, matted and disheveled. With one hand moving after the other, the man pulled the ties from his hair, letting it all fall down his shoulders and his back. "Had to do all that for a guy with a broomstick?" he sneered. His hair fell on the loose bag at his back.
