Gabriel slams into Iphi’s office.

Normally, he would never get away with this. In fact, he has gotten punished for this exact thing three times already. But he knew today would be different. He confidently placed a manilla folder on her desk, filled to the brim with research — most of it incoherent garbage to the layman.

“I made a breakthrough in the case.” He plays with the bookmark in the folder. “All we need is a little bit of elbow grease.” His ever-charming smile reveals itself. Wow, so bright. So, sparkly. Then, he flips open the folder to that bookmarked page.

Steaks. It’s a picture of steaks.

“It’s time for our weekly stakeout!” It was their first stakeout ever, but if he could make a good impression, then maybe he’d move up the corporate ladder. On second thought, it was more important to have fun, wasn’t it? “Are you in or are you in?”

I never thought I'd see

Always hard at work Iphi was nose deep in a bunch of paperwork related to their last outing as an agency. They had been tasked with crowd control for a larger agency dealing with a turf war. Overall, it was a very successful endeavor without any casualties; however, there was always more to fill out.

Chirps sudden interruption wasn't too uncommon. He had a lot of talent and a LOT of eccentricities. She wanted him to get more field experience so she had arranged for him to come out with her for a case she'd been working. "Weekly is getting a bit ahead of yourself. We need to make sure this one goes off without issue first." she'd place the stack of papers and stand, grabbing her jacket and a briefcase with #50 on the front.

"I'm going to be testing a prototype for some gear. Assuming the Kojima Gang finally makes their move, we're going to be getting into a firefight. Last chance to sit this one out." she already knew the answer and would grab her keys on the way out to drive them to the abandoned area where the gang would be planning their heist.

“There’s always issues.” Gabriel knew better than to set high expectations. That’s what led to disappointment. “But with us on the case, we’ll be unstoppable.”

Gabriel winked and then his eyes immediately went to the briefcase. He was going to see it on the field, so there wasn’t a reason for him to pry into Iphi’s mind, but he still wanted to. Then again, she did know his quirk. If he tried taking a photo or a video or anything, then she would know what he was up to. Maybe the security cameras.

“I don’t know, it might be too dangerous.” Gabriel sighed. “Maybe, I need to field test a new weapon, too, y’know? Number fifty-one, maybe?”

Considering his failure rate on the field before graduating from UAU, he should really invest in gear. And not a fake gun that takes pictures. Something that’ll actually save his ass out there.

Iphi couldn't help but smile at Gabriel's confidence. He wasn't much younger than she was and yet he had an infectious energy to him. Part of this was why he was invited to the agency even without a hero license with the other being how specialized his quirk was when it came to this sort of work. It was similar to Lonewolfs just more potent in regards to their usual cases. "We'll have to see how unstoppable we really are. Hopefully this lives up to your expectations." she smiled slightly as they headed outside to get into the car.

"Unfortunately, 51 is still a work in progress, and I always put a failsafe in my support gear which means it won't work for anyone else but me." This was usually done by making the process of working the things she made extremely complicated such as the specific order of muscle movement in her hand to use the Pneumatic Cannon. Unless someone else had High Spec they wouldn't be able to pull it off in a functional way. She'd start the car and once the GPS was on she'd pull out to the road and begin their drive. "You know, as a member of Ouros, you have full reign of our support lab?" As of now, Iphi was the only one who used the support lab as the rest of the members didn't have any aptitude for engineering. She had hoped Gabriel felt comfortable enough to take advantage of their inventory now that he was official.

"I'm sure Felix probably mentioned this, but I've been working with Nittosystems CIC." If Gabriel paid attention to the news, he would likely know that this was a new organization that combined two research companies into one to collaborate with the government to develop new technology. "I've had a few opportunities to study some quirks, and I've been looking into creating an application of those into support gear. This combination of two students' quirks is more of a defensive tool." She was confident she'd get to use it as this stakeout would escalate if the group were trying to move their product today. From her own investigation, she was 95.7% sure this would be happening today.

“Full reign?” Gabriel rubbed his chin. There were a lot of projects on his mind, most of which involved his films. After graduating from UA, he found it difficult to focus on one project over another. He normally reinforced his projects through the environment. This lab was for this, that lab was for that — and his room is where he made his glasses, and mask, and reviewed footage from the streets.

There were still some limitations, of course. He couldn’t compromise himself. If word got out of his illegal adventures, then it’d be impossible to avoid the consequences. Especially working for this agency. But that was part of the gambit — work at a detective agency to cover your tracks. Muddy the timelines… all that fun.

“I did need some extra storage space…” He muttered to himself. “Nittosystems? How’d you get that connect?”

Iphip’s resourcefulness impressed him the most. She had a knack for all kinds of things, but her ability to access people was something he never got the hang of. Apparently, he was ‘annoying.’ Gabriel preferred endearing and handsome but whatever.

He steps into the passenger seat and sets up his camera, purposely avoiding Iphi. It’ll catch the car’s point of view as they drive to the location. If they were ambushed for whatever reason, then Gabe would have all the evidence he needs.

“By the way,” Gabe tested the waters. “I can like… punch people in self-defense, right? On the off-chance, you can’t protect me? Pleading emoji?” Yes, he said that aloud.

"Yes, but given your...history, perhaps it would be important to note that I do have that entire space monitored." she'd give him a small wink "Only Sadako and I have access to that footage. For security purposes of course." It was also in case they managed to hire someone with a shady past somehow or whose allegiance was questionable. Between her and her best friend, they were pretty good at vetting people but in the world of quirk users, you could never be too sure. Gabriel even had one of those quirks that made it difficult to lock down information, not that she was worried about him in particular, as he was a good kid. Now, what he had gotten up to before being recruited? That was a different story.

The expressway was quicker to reach their destination even if the GPS told her to use the side streets. Iphi took the investigation part of her job very seriously, including moving to and from locations. She had spent all week studying the weather and traffic patterns for the week to know the GPS was off by one minute and 26 seconds. With work like this, precision was key, and she wanted to show Gabriel that if possible.

"You have a work license, not a hero license. It's similar to a policeman. You can only perform fieldwork under the purview of a registered hero. If they act against you you can use self-defense, but you can't be the aggressor without probable cause." she would slow down as they took the exit towards their spot. "We shouldn't need to go on the offensive, just stall for the police to arrive if necessary." she would park about two blocks before exiting the car, grabbing her briefcase in the process. "One block down, there's an abandoned apartment on the top floor of a building. You ready?"

My history… Did she know? It wouldn’t surprise him if she did considering her reputation. And even if she did, she hadn’t turned him in for a reason. Gabriel thought her a by-the-book type. If she wasn’t, then he’d have to be on his toes. He had been banking on her predictability to create a false history in case he was ever pressed for charges.

“We only almost decapitated one person. And that’s because the crew almost dropped one of my most expensive cameras.” A feigned, false confession. Hiding the faux-defensiveness with humor to sell the bit. It might not have mattered. But he wasn’t selling his soul that easily. “But that makes sense. Just don’t steal my designs. I’ll sue.”

He offered a wink back.

“I’m not the type to be an aggressor.” Gabriel went into this field because his failed stints as a vigilante. He had a mind that could change the world — even without his quirk — but he did not have the physical prowess or skill to be a hero. Not yet, anyway. “I love being protected.”

Gabriel lets out a deep breath. This is his first, real mission with Iphi. And there was only so much he could contribute here. He had already made a good first impression. Here’s to exceeding the expectations he had set.

If Gabriel was truly surprised that she learned the full extent of his history prior to her bringing him on as an employee then he had a lot to learn. If anything could be used to describe how she worked it was thorough. Even still, his past didn't matter as much as long as he was working with the law now. In her opinion, while a rule follower, she was never really a stickler for any particular societal rules unless that involved hurting innocent people. Anyone could be reformed and perhaps the arrogance of a brain the size of jupiter influenced her decision making on ethics as she was naturally inclined to follow logic over emotion.

She wasn't going to dwell on it or indulge Gabriel any further on this topic as they had a job to do. "Well that's good to hear. Since you can't be the aggressor for most of our work." she would turn back as they walked towards their stakeout spot "unless you decided to go for a license, of course." she'd give a wink before continuing on. Once they ascended the stairs Iphi would begin to set up the equipment they needed all the while setting aside the briefcase for later usage. She'd hand Gabriel some imaging equipment and an earpiece while she continued to prep for their stakeout "Keep an eye out for them. They'll be arriving soon to meet with the other group."

“I don’t think the hero shtick is for me,” Truth be told, even if he wanted to change the world, he knew that he couldn’t. Not as a hero. He had tried. Even with all the adventures he had gone on during his UAU days, he always worked best behind a counter. Maybe he could make a little bird that flew around for him and gave people orders or something. Recon was always important, right? But he wouldn’t need his hero license for any of that, would he? And if he did, would he want the baggage that came with it? When it came down to it… would he step up?

“I like being comfy behind a desk. Kick my feet up.” He put his arms behind his head, closed his eyes, and banged his elbow on a sign. “Ow.”

Gabriel grumbled.

Grabbing the imaging equipment he tinkered around with it, getting the gist of how this model operated. That’s the thing about machines. They’re like people. You can get any of them goin’ if you had the magic touch. Now all he had to do was pull a rabbit out of a hat, y’feel?

“Alright, ready.” He paused. “Do we have a safeword by any chance?”

Unfolding some audio surveillance equipment, she'd chime in "You never know unless you try, but I think you'll do great work with us regardless." his quirk was extremely interesting to Iphi as she was always interested in those with abnormalities that defied the boundaries of science. Well that AND that Gabriel could probably use something to channel his wanderlust into in order to reform even if it was just a tiny bit. "A safe word is good idea. Pick whatever you'd like and I'll remember it" tapping her forehead she finished setting up the recording and listening devices and placed her headphones on.

Right on cue a car would pull up revealing three men who then opened the door and a tall woman with a large scar on her face stepped out. The proximity sensor meant that Iphi could tell they had arrived even though Gabriel was the one operating the equipment "Do you have eyes on a woman with a scar? She is known as Brain Freeze. Particularly nasty quirk, locks you up if you get hit by a blast from her head." she'd move into a position where she could get comfortable. "Audio goes live in 3, 2, 1" and with that the meeting between the two villainous criminals was underway. So far so good.

Gabriel was more of an idea guy. He comes up with the idea and then he delegates tasks elsewhere. If this were his UAU self he might have put in the elbow grease himself, but the value you create transcends the physical labor needed to create. Don’t get him wrong, it was fundamentally important to art but it didn't need to be his physical labor.

But this wasn’t film. He wasn’t the leader here. Iphi was. So when the delegation came he knew his role and didn’t complain a peep. Nor a chirp! That’s a really funny joke but Iphi wouldn’t get it unless… unless she knew.

“Canary,” Gabriel said. “Simple, easy. Classy.”

The door opens. The meeting starts.

Gabriel locks in.

“I’ve got sights.” Was that the proper phrasing? He was new to this teamwork thing? He took a deep breath to calm himself. It didn’t work though. Two, one…

"Canary is perfectly fine." she would finish unfolding her equipment and would walk over to Chirp and slip a pair of headphones on his head. A little static and it would be clear enough audio as if he was in the same room as the little gathering. "You can adjust the sound quality with the dial on the right ear." she didn't want to pull too much focus from him as she needed him to be ready for anything.

The meeting would start "I'm a very busy woman" the first voice would speak up "This offer better be worth my time or my assistant here will have a LOT to say" the sound of snapping fingers could be heard and a second voice would speak up "No no Miss Brain Freeze, we wouldn't dare waste your time. My associate is coming with the goods in just a few minutes" right on cue Chirp would be able to see a truck pulling up out of the corner of his eye. Iphi, who could hear what was going on but couldn't see, would speak into the microphone built into the headset "We need to verify that they have their goods in hand before we can move in on them. I'll be messaging the police before we do it but unfortunately, we'll need to mobilize before then. Through my investigations, there is likely a mole within the force so we need to hold them here just in case."

With the headphones slumped onto his ears, Gabe was absorbed in the conversation. Brain Freeze was giving them all the information they needed. A truck pulled up, presumably with the ‘goods’ on board, and with his mind racing, Iphi slammed the brakes.

Gabriel jumped in his seat.

With his heart pounding he slid one of the headphones off. Almost immediately, he placed them back on. Right, duh. If he could hear her, he didn’t need to slide off the headphones.

“A warning would have been nice,” Gabe’s heart pounded. Recomposing himself as best he could, he turned to Iphi. “Well, the trucks here.” Gabriel was ready to move out but was unsure if he could go in swinging. He offered a cheeky smile. “This constitutes probable cause, right?”

But the mole…

Gabriel stifled a laugh. What if he ran in, decked someone in the face, and it was the mole this entire time? I’ll have to remember that.

Iphi was in full work mode, focused entirely on the broadcast to make sure the timing of this whole thing went off perfectly. Fixing a small camera onto her lapel she would give it a few taps as she checked the screen it was connected to to make sure she was getting the proper visuals. No delay on the feed was great and with the data storage for this footage being back at Ouros it meant that even if she was injured or killed here there would be enough footage to incriminate Brain Freeze without a shadow of a doubt. "Apologies. The timing of this operation is tight so I'll be throwing a few surprises your way." she'd hit the button her briefcase. to reveal her newest piece of support equipment: The Inverse Curtain.

It was the first of many planned tools she'd be adding to her arsenal and the first that was a purely defensive tool. The quirk research study not only provided valuable data for the industry as a whole but also for Iphi's personal workshop. Part of her deal for experimenting was that she was given creative freedom to use the data they had collected for anything she wanted. This tool was the combination of two quirk factors from Kei Hada's Replenish and Sebastian Sinclaire's Elasticity. It was a hand device taking the form of a gold-colored metal ribbon, which wraps around the user's fingers, hand, and forearm; a blue circular object resembling a gem is nestled in the palm. It was fitted for the left arm to work in tandem with her Pneumatic Cannon. "I need a quick test, and then we'll move." she'd activate the device, causing the center to glow and hyper-extend her fingers, which resulted in the air warping slightly before it would form a small hexagonal shield hanging in the air. Iphi would press her free hand against it, and with the shield giving some resistance, she was satisfied enough that it would be used in the field. Closing her left palm the hexagon would disappear into nothing.

"Okay, it's time." she'd stand up readying both her pieces of equipment before gesturing for Chirp to follow her. "I'm going to enter first. You'll need to block the back entrance, it doesn't matter if you win we just need to hold them here. Are you ready?" Assuming he was, she'd move towards the entranceway and point for him to move to the backside of the warehouse. With a warning shot from her gauntlet, she'd step forward "Pro Hero: Recall. Under my authority as a registered Pro Hero licensed by Japan, you're all under arrest!" some of the more cocky guards would ready their weapons, but Iphi was a step ahead of them. With her Inverse Curtain, she'd create the hexagonal shield once more only this time she'd wave her hand in a large circle which caused this shield to duplicate itself, forming a defensive wall of interlocked shapes that deflected the bullet fire. Using it as mobile cover, she'd ready a shot from her Pneumatic Cannon to disarm one of the guards before aiming for the other. "Chirp, I think Brain Freeze is headed your way. You're authorized to use force to subdue her. Police will be here in two minutes if you need support, call for me."

Oh, I want one…

Gabriel felt so excluded. He was okay with Iphi bringing a toy for herself until he saw what the toy actually did! Now, he was left empty-handed, using his delicate hands to punch hardened criminals in the face to take them out. At least, that was the assignment. The instructions were clear. Any hesitation and the entire operation was at risk.

With a nod, he stormed to the back, positioning himself so he was out of sight when the door swung open. He could hear the footsteps coming, only to be alerted the big bad was on the way. But what was worse was what Iphi called him. Shit, she knows.

Gabe’s heart was racing.

Out from the door was a woman with a scar. And from around the corner came Gabe’s fist — bam! A direct hit!

Brain Freeze fell off balance and crumpled onto the ground. And in a panic, they launched a blast upward, a desperate attempt at retaliation. Gabe avoided the first blast and was ready to knock her out when he was tackled by one of the henchmen following behind.

Crap! She didn’t even need to use her quirk to restrain him, she had a human manifestation of a headache wrapping his big, strong arms against Gabe’s petite form.

“Sorry for punching you in the face,” Gabe said. “There was a… bug?”
