I

t was a job unto itself learning the culture of a land so far from home. Though Farrin lived in Japan for a few years now, most of that time had been spent training at the Above & Beyond Agency, at Hero Prep school, and now in UAU. If he wanted to truly integrate with Japan though, he had to understand it. Sada was gone again, back with Foundation. Her absence was felt with every beat of his heart like the little blood pumper was always ready to burst. Food lost its taste, he lost his sleep, and the world was so often without color. She was his home, and now she was far, far away. It wouldn't last forever though. Eventually, she would return. And when she did he would be armed with even more insight on her home. Maybe that'd impress her a bit? Hopefully. 

So, what better way to learn about the place than to go out and explore? The Omizutori Festival was being celebrated in Nara, so off to Nara he went for the weekend. He wasn't alone either. If Farrin was going to explore, he was bringing a fellow U.S.er with him. And that, my friends, is how Josephine found herself dragged along on this little excursion.

"I 'preciate yer' taggin' along, Jo," he offered, walking the path the the festival grounds by the temple. 

Apparently, some monks would be handling torches as some meaning for cleansing their sins. If somehow this process could somehow reach across time, and could affect the many Alters that existed out there, well, they as a collective could use it.

"No problem Windy, everybody gets one."

Jo's words were honest, technically everyone did get one. Except usually the 'one' was from JoJo, not Josephine. So either way she considered this that 'one' for Windy.

"Well, I gotta say the trip over here wasn't bad, though I probably shoulda slept on the way rather than staying up the whole time. I feel like I'm keeping more of the spirits on me that this festival is supposed to cleanse. How about you?"

Jo asked earnestly while taking a look around. It didn't seem too crazy around these parts, however, that didn't mean that trouble couldn't show up at any second. Besides they were here too... well.. they were here for something. Windy was upset about his gal pal being away.

Unlike a thousand others she had met in the past it didn't sound like it was code for break or anything so ya know it couldn't be that bad. He just needed something to pass his time until the girl was back in his arms...

This is probably why he chose the lesbian of all people to come with him to a different area outside of UA. Can't blame him, perfect way to avoid all the drama and still get away from it all. Windy was smart in his planning.

arrin nodded along with Jo's reply. Yeah, the bullet train really did make a short ride of just about anything. What once would be a half-day affair, with older trains at least, was now cut down to a couple of hours. This of course begged the question, could Farrin make the trip even faster running with Chronokinesis? He was confident he could move faster than the train, but the problem wasn't really speed. It was duration. Could he keep Chronokinesis going at top speed for a few hours? That he wasn't so sure of. It was a challenge for another day. 

"I dun' feel a thing really," Farrin mused, "I'm no' really a superstitious type, maybe a little stitious." 

He earned himself a light chuckle with that old reference. But it was true, he didn't believe in cleansing one's sins through any supernatural means. You had to earn the forgiveness of those you wronged, or at the least try to make up for it with other acts of kindness. No cheating one's way out from their past deeds. 

"Really, I'm jus' tryin' ta' learn more 'bout this place. I been livin' 'ere fer' a few years now, but ne'er really took the time ta' learn the culture, yuh' know? Been trainin', trainin', n' trainin' some more." 

The duo would eventually push past the dirt path to something more easily traversable as they approached the temple grounds. Small crowds became visible. Decorations were plenty, and chatter was shared among the people. Most seemed to be in good spirits. 

"Yuh' dive inta' this place blind or did yuh' study up on Japanese customs n' all that before flyin' over?"

Jo looked over at Windy, a quick double-blink while she thought about how to approach that question. Naturally, the truth couldn't be told so we could tell the truth with some chunks cut out.

"I knew about some here and there because of the wonder of public education back in the states. Though the choice was really made because I have some family over here."

They were in the grave, but they were here.

"So I suppose it was only natural that I eventually take the trip over here, not to mention seeing more of the world. The whole Hero aspect ended up being a gigantic factor too, cause who doesn't want to end up helping people? One of the biggest ways you can do it too is through this University so might as well go straight through with it all right."

Cracking her neck she felt that was a good answer to the question, satisfied with her response while taking in some of the environment.

"Besides a little stitious or no stitious, I think there's something to be said about all this whole cleanse business. Who knows maybe enough you'll feel like a new moon with all those nagging thoughts purified." She had a little accent at the end finishing her words however Jo couldn't stop the chuckle leaving her mouth at the end.

Besides that wasn't being rude to the culture, lord knows there are probably plenty of people who've taken this path and were likely a lot worse with both their words and or actions.

arrin couldn't speak much on public education back home. He was seven when he took to the streets and envied those his age who stared at clocks waiting for class to end. They wanted nothing more than to get out. All he wanted to was to get in. But no school was taking some kid off the street with no parents or part of some orphanage. Can't have your cake and eat it. If he wanted to stay on the move, out of anyone's sight, he couldn't go to school. That also left a lot of catching up to do when he finally did give in and Barty scooped him up and moved him across the worst at his nana's behest.

"That makes sense, must be nice havin' some family nearby while yer' studyin'. N' yeah, UAU is considered one o' the best hero universities 'round the globe so definitely the place ta' be fer heroin' n' all that." 

There was the Howlett Institute back in the US, but they were far more militarized in their training from what Farrin heard. Unsurprising given how much larger the US was than Japan. You needed a higher degree of organization, but it definitely spoke to the difference in philosophies between the countries as well. 

"Well, I know this shindig is 'bout cleansin' oneself n' bringin' in good luck. I dun' really believe in either, but it can't hurt, right? Prepare fer' the worst, hope fer' the best n' all that," Farrin said as they passed into the temple grounds proper.

Immediately the two were greeted with the site of one of the many torchbearers, surrounded by a small crowd. Some were praying, others simply watching. The warmth was flush against the time-turner's face. Yeah, he didn't believe in luck, but that didn't mean he couldn't hope for some to come his way. Things were getting rougher by the day. If life could ease up by some modicum, he would be grateful to whatever powers that may be.

"Yeah, it's nice!"

Being near those tombstones was one of the last things she wanted for over a decade and it was only recently Jo was okay with the idea of coming to Japan. Unfortunately, times end up changing and you have to go back either to help the country out or try to restart a couple of things in ya life.

Ya know one or the other.

"Yup that good ole UAU what would we do without it? Probably be in an office somewhere trying to deal with the police system of Japan... on second thought Ill take UAU every day."

Now that was one thing Jo could never see herself being an officer. Yuck. Not her thing, too much red tape on just about everything in life.

"Ah come on have a little more faith ya never know, maybe you'll come outta here feeling like a new man!"

She couldn't help but smile at her words returning the greeting, one thing was for sure though...

ood fortune? Luck of the Irish? Well, he certainly hoped for it. The world was cold enough a place for the longest time, and recently, it had grown all the colder. The void inching into his psyche, probing at every edge of his mind. Sleeplessness returned, and so he was left to his solemn methodical wake. A few friends were still around, though. And Jo was certainly an interesting character. Lively in her own way. 

"Heh, who knows, really? Part o' me' thought I might make a good police officer as a youngin', 'fore me' quirk showed itself, but lookin' at all that now, well, I can't say it woulda been fer' me." 

Funny how that worked, though. So many of the police officers he became familiar with during his homeless tenure turned out to be troublemakers themselves in their youth. Maybe it was their way of making up for it? Well, the good ones, at least. There wasn't much nice to say about the corrupt and crappy among the authorities. 

"Fingers crossed, right?" He said, holding his hand up and crossing his fingers with a smirk. Then it happened. 

As they passed the first set of torchbearers, one of the men turned himself, and as he started to walk away, a few embers fluttered off the torch, dying down into little more than wisps. Three had touched Farrin's chest, drawing his eyes down to his shirt. The flames died down almost immediately, too small to grow into anything dangerous. Another few floated on over Jo's way. Yup, fingers crossed for some good luck.

"You a police officer, that'll be the day. Unless they let you redesign that uniform you'd have to wear so it looked more like a frontman outfit, I don't see you doing that." Jo couldn't help but give a small chuckle at the thought, that you'd have everyone else in their uniform heading in with their coffee and morning sandwich.

Suddenly, the wind would whip while the door opened and into the precinct would walk Officer Windy, his coffee black and justice firm. The shire would be safe with this studded emo sleuth on the case... thank god she didn't say any of that out loud.

Passing the first torchbearers Jo scratched the back of her neck and started to survey the area. The area seemed quite serene not to mention more of the minimal type of temple. Rather than those extravagant palaces that somehow were able to exist for hundreds and hundreds of years. They had their place and there was nothing wrong with them, but she much rather this be happening inside one of these places.

She watched them touch his chest and, well of course they weren't gonna touch instead it was her shoulders. As for the flames, Jo couldn't help but watch them move, it was almost as if they were going to be treated to a little show.

"How pretty." The words left her mouth and a small smile curved onto her face. Maybe good luck was indeed on the horizon, which personally Josephine wouldn't mind. Especially after the last month, some good luck would be pretty sweet right now.
