"Why so gloom, time dude?" Apogee shouted from the corner of the building, looking back at Farrin.
"That doesn't rhyme in the least," Farrin responded, the faintest crook of smile finding the corner of his lips.
Apogee was infectious positivity. A young hero who had graduated from UAU just as Farrin moved to Japan. He was Pinnacle's, the lead hero of the Above & Beyond agency's apprentice. A full-fledged hero unto himself and the closest thing Farrin had to an older brother. The two had sparred for years before Farrin ever stepped into UAU. Without a doubt, this man was one of the reasons Farrin was so far ahead of much of his class. Yet, despite that ray of positivity and trust, the time-turner just didn't have it in him to talk. The morose march of this life went on, and all Farrin could do was continue onward.
"That doesn't answer my question. What's clogging up the hourglass, bud?"
"Nothin', jus' haven't been sleepin' well."
The lie painted with a shade of truth. Farrin didn't like lying but was in no mood to talk about the legion advancing through his mind. Those nights he slept alone were the worst, sifting away, seeing the world in all its cruelty, and knowing he wasn't enough. Might never be enough to win it back from the shadows of what seemed to be an everlasting night. At least they were on patrol. This counted toward his grades, too. Some time away from campus, out in the field where he might actually do some good, and it could up his grades? Some small blessings touched his life still.
"I call BS, but I won't press you for now. Come on. We're the lucky shlups that get to cross through Shibuya today."
