ero work was endless work, right? Something like that. The world beyond these revered walls wouldn't give them a break once they moved on. Sure, Farrin had only just begun his UAU journey, but Hero Prep's three-year investment went by in a flash. There was no reason to believe the four years spent in university would feel all that different. Did he have what it took to really be a hero?

The thought was shoved into the black box behind his mental walls, then buried with a moat surrounding the castle. He did. He could. He must. 

A mix of various jabs and cross-jabs was swung against an opponent of the time-turner's making. He was shadowboxing up atop a grassy hill that overlooked the gravelly grounds of the UAU's training fields. For now, this was kind of his spot. While his peers sectioned off into their own little groups and practiced amongst themselves, Farrin boxed the wind. Many freshmen seemed to be avoiding him since he had smacked a few loudmouths around in a perfectly sanctioned spar. Hardly a bother. He didn't need their help. As a matter of fact, all he really needed were some comfortable workout clothes and Sada. The latter more than the former, but he had to keep a level head on here. Not everyone made it into UAU. He was incredibly thankful that both he and his loligoth heart made it in. 

He pushed the thoughts aside. There was no time for that now. He would spend the week learning the school, then find himself the biggest and baddest among the senior class and start collecting "senior spar cards." A little concept that randomly popped into his brain in his sleep a few days ago. Surely, the most tenured of his classmates would have much to teach. If it meant landing on his ass left and right, well, that was a price he was more than willing to pay.

Jab, jab, cross. Jab, jab, cross! Jab, cross, jab, uppercut! And so the cycle went on, a young Farrin honing in his most trusted heroic tools.

Oh my god! Who would've thought hero work was endless work?!

Freja was panting and sweating running circles around one of the gravelly training fields. Not even with her hair tied up into a high ponytail could she seem to beat the heat. After a while she finally doubled over and had to walk off to the side to rest. At this rate she was going to remain bottom of her year forever. She took a big swig of her water bottle as she recalled Leonid's words on orientation day. She could do it too. She could also become a hero.

Screwing the cap back on the bottle with a small sigh she closed her eyes as she recalled hearing laughing after her question. Pretty stupid of her to just out herself as quirkless like that, but the damage was already done. Tightening her grip on the bottle, Freja turned to dramatically throw it, but stopped her arm when something, no, someone caught her attention. Out of the corner of her eye, up on a hill... Was that someone training? Well, it couldn't hurt to check. Worst thing that would happen is they would tell her to get lost.

Freja took her time climbing up the grassy hill, still a little tired from her run, even going as far as using her wooden training stick as walking stick. It felt like a climb up Mt. Fuji itself to see who the mystery hill person was. When she finally did reach the top, she stood there for a moment and looked at him throwing out his jabs. She couldn't really get a good look at his face from this angle... Maybe if she walked around him? It wasn't until an awkward moment had passed that she realized she still hadn't said anything.

''Uh- H-Hi!! Sorry..'' She waved a hand and offered a nervous smile, before looking over her shoulder down at UAU before looking back at him. ''Why are you training up here?''

is fists flew faster and faster through the air. The hardest right cross the time-turner threw saw him ride his forward momentum into a spin and deliver a kick with the heel of his foot against his nonexistent enemy. He had to go faster, swing harder, be greater. He had seen something years ago, something that demanded he dedicate the entirety of his being to this goal. He wasn't gutter trash picking through the garbage for scraps. Not anymore. He was a student at the prestigious UAU - and he would one day be Oberon. 

Grit teeth sat behind a focused visage. The distractions were long gone. There was only himself and the enemy. Then there was someone else. 

Farrin drew his fists back as the line of focus was cut. Someone was speaking to him. Sore arms dropped to his side. Droplets of sweat raced down his brow. Shaking the moment away, he turned to the source of the question. A familiar face too. 

"Good sight lines across the trainin' grounds, bit more o' a breeze, n' I'd rather do me' calisthenics on grass than gravel," he started, eyeing the quirkless girl from orientation. "Bit quieter too." He added, though it wasn't his intention to turn her away. "I know you. Leonid called yuh Helt, no? Nice ta' meet yuh." 

How a quirkless girl might make it through the halls of UAU was lost on Farrin, but she passed the entrance exam, so she had to have something up her sleeve, right? Was it odd the young time-turner felt some form of obligation to someone he had only just formally met? Though he made no mention of it, anyone else, Farrin had laid a few of those obnoxious gobshites that had laughed at orientation out. People were packed full of potential, quirk or no. Who were they to laugh at this girl's ambitions? 

"So what brings yuh up 'ere?" He'd ask after she offered her full name or greeting. He had a few minutes to talk, but not too long. His training regime demanded his attention.

Huh, that explanation made a surprising amount of sense. Never mind that though, didn't his voice sound familiar somehow? It was a very unique accent, probably not natively Japanese as far as Freja was aware. ''Yeah, I suppose it is.'' Although she couldn't say she would choose a spot like this herself. It was too... Elevated. Practically put your training on display for the whole world to see. ''M-Me?'' She blinked her eyes, kind of shocked that Farrin remembered her. Was that a good thing or a bad thing? He didn't seem like a bad guy, or a bully.

''Yeah! Uh, Helt Freja, nice to meet you too! O'Rourke, right?'' She was taking a guess here, but it had to be. His voice was simply to unique to belong to anyone else. ''Your voice gives you away.'' She smiled. ''B-But I don't mean that as a bad thing!'' She quickly clarified, realizing her words could have been misconstrued. ''I got curious. I was training just down there.'' She pointed down at one of the training fields with her wooden stick. ''I saw you and wondered who it was training up here.'' Well, it was sort of half of the truth. Freja had been struggling with her training, particularly close combat. Ever since her recent run-in with a villain in Shinjuku she couldn't help but feel like she wasn't doing enough.

''Actually-'' She hesitated for a moment. This was that same feeling she had when she asked her question on orientation day. She was nervous, but there was no shame in asking. ''You're pretty strong, right? Could you show me what you can do in hand-to-hand?''

n ornery bile built in Farrin's throat ready to lash back at any follow-up insults to his accent. More than a few students in Hero Prep lost teeth targeting Farrin as a "stupid foreigner with an equally dumb accent," but the Irish barb never came. Freja was quick to clarify she meant him no insult, so before uttering a word, his calm had been restored. 

"Yup. That's me, Farrin O'Rourke." 

He probably should have offered his name to begin with, but they were past that now. On to more important things. Like training. Before his life in Japan, Farrin's training consisted of pickpocketing, usually without success, or basically doing the bare minimum to stay alive. Barty, his guardian in Japan, may have been a pain in the ass, but he sure taught Farrin a lot - and that was before Hero Prep. Now, the time-turner had some pride in capabilities. Yeah, damn right he was pretty strong. He had worked hard for it too. Had to remind himself often that those days living on the streets were well behind him now. He had grown into someone capable of doing good - he hoped. 

"I'd like ta' think so, yes," he said, putter a stopper on his pride, "n' of course I can." 

Farrin firmed his stance and set his feet about shoulder distance apart, with his right foot positioned back a bit, narrowing his profile. His right fist was clutched close to the chest, his left pointed out and away from the body. It was an odd twist on what most people thought was a traditional boxing stance.

"The base o' me fightin' style is called Dornálaíocht, stems from Irish bareknuckled boxin'. I dun' know how familiar yuh are wit' boxin', but that stance n' style people think o' from old television matches assumes yer wearin' gloves, which naturally add some mass ta' yer fists, makin defense easier."

Where traditional boxers kept their fists kind of close to one another, Farrin kept his right held back a bit still. He jabbed a few times with his left fist, then chopped it from side to side, and finally brought the hammer down, rotating his upper body with a heavy right cross-jab. Maybe the speed looked impressive, but ultimately he was punching air. Not many bells and whistles he could add to the demonstration.

"When yuh dun' have that extra mass, it's smart ta' allocate yer tools correctly. Me' left fist is used fer light jabs, ta try n' create an opening or for deflectin' enemy blows by interceptin' them, hence those little side ta' side chops. Meanwhile, my right is the wreckin ball I'll use when I create an openin'. It's no sooo different from traditional boxin' but lackin the mass ta' just hold yer hands up ta defend, we compensate by usin' the left more as protection." 

When Farrin finished, he relaxed his body and faced Freja. He didn't make it sound overly complicated, right? Any layman could pick that up. Again, he hoped. 

"Got all that? Wanna give it a go?"

She had to admit it was nice to know that there were other foreign students thriving in the school, even if they weren't from similar cultural backgrounds. ''I remember you from orientation day, you're the fight guy.'' Freja's background wasn't the most glowing either. The reason she was so good at wielding blunt weapons was because she hung with the wrong crowd. A delinquent throughout all of school who was dangerously close to joining a gang in Copenhagen until her life took a turn for the different.

Her eyes lit up a bit when he agreed to show her. It was always a relief to be treated like everyone else, even with small interactions like this. She knew it wasn't always the reason, but part of her always felt like when others rejected her or made fun of her that all they ever saw was the lack of a quirk. Not a person. She furrowed her brow and watched him intently as he took his stance, trying to memorize every aspect of it, even if it was a lot to take in. ''N-Not at all familiar.'' She had to admit it never really caught her eye. Maybe because fighting like that, with fists only, felt so unattainable even earlier in her life. Instruments, tools, weapons, that had always been the way to go for her.

He made it look so easy, but Freja could tell this wasn't just something anyone could pick up on from one demonstration. Maybe if they had some kind of super quirk that helped them learn martial arts? ''That's a lot of micromanagement.'' She put a hand up to her chin. Usually her own fighting style was all about footwork and focusing on finding openings and swinging for that point of impact. ''I didn't realize there could be so much technique to it. When people are boxing everything usually moves so fast.'' It was insightful! Now she was glad she had actually asked for a demonstration.

''Who? Me?'' She pointed a finger back at herself, looking a bit flabbergasted. ''Well... I suppose.''

Putting her stick aside she took a deep breath before shifting her stance, trying her best to imitate what Farrin had done. As someone with very limited hand to hand fighting knowledge.. It wasn't very accurate. ''You get into this stance every time before a fight?'' She said without looking over at him, too preoccupied with trying to remember what she had just seen.

ere, here, lemme help yuh, if yuh' dun' mind." Gotta respect a person's bodily autonomy. Consent and all that. Freja was both absolutely right and entirely wrong. Yes, to a novice, there was plenty of micromanagement in overcoming the body's natural instinct in the face of danger. But practice and experience were like water against stone. It took hours. Months. Years even, but eventually, water eroded all. Luckily, this wouldn't take quite as long waterfalls against the rocks below, but it would still require quite an investment. 

Assuming Freja was okay with him making a few micro-adjustments to her stance, he would guide her left shoulder forward a tad and pull back her right to create that narrower target profile and give her upper body more torque when swinging a cross-jab when the time came. "Pull yer' right foot back just a smidge more, too" he added before backing away and inspecting the finished product. Imperfect, but perfection was a mountain he continued to climb to this day, and from where he stood, there was no view of the top.

"This'll work," he said before drawing his fists up. "I'm no' gonna swing at yuh', but just watch how me' body moves wit' the punches." 

He demonstrated a few more left jabs followed by two heavy cross shots. The lefts didn't see as much turn of the torso, but his weight was certainly packed behind the cross shots.

"Punchin' is just as much about speed n' bodily movement as it is yer arm strength. More so even, I'd say. All the strength in the world won't see yuh' throw a proper punch. Sure, yuh might hurt someone far weaker than yerself, but ta' approach a learned opponent, yuh' need technique. Now give it a go yerself; just take a few jabs at the air. Pretend it's the biggest bastard yuh' know."

''S-Sure..'' She hated to admit it, but she was a complete novice here, no not even a novice, she felt like a toddler trying to imitate what he had showed her. She didn't protest when he made adjustments to her stance. ''Like this?'' She asked a bit uncertain as he took a step back to see her stance in its entirety. ''You must have trained like this for years to be able to make it look so easy.'' She looked over at him as he raised his hands. Another demonstration?

''Okay.'' How his body moves with the punches? His swings were fast, fighting like this was much faster than swinging a weapon around, but that was probably the trade-off between a weapon and bareknuckle fighting. With a weapon fighter like Freja, she had more reach and didn't risk her own body the same way. However, a bareknuckle fighter like Farrin could throw out a lot more consecutive attacks a lot quicker. ''Right.. Okay.'' Biggest bastard, biggest bastard...

Almost as if she had a quirk for it, Freja was able to clearly manifest them in front of her. She didn't know what the villain who killed her looked like, but she could remember what the guy that broke her heart looked like. Bastard was probably still back home, living it up with his street gang. With a fire in her eyes she assumed the stance once more, taking a moment longer to do so as she remembered the adjustments Farrin had made earlier. Then, with perhaps more vigor and anger than technique, Freja threw out her quick jabs. Each jab against the perceived bastard, the imaginable enemy, somehow felt strangely cathartic.

''How was that?'' She looked over at Farrin after already breaking a sweat. ''I think it's brave of you to go into a fight without a weapon. I mean, like a tool, or instrument.''

rom complete neophyte to novice in a blink. At least, that's what some layman onlooker might think. It was a fair start. Nobody was born a pro. Farrin was a student of the scrap even still. Any expertise he appeared to possess came courtesy of his four years of training and the need to survive on his own before that. Freja's pages were written in invisible ink to Farrin. He didn't know her story, but he was sure it challenged her in other ways. 

"Yer gettin' there," he offered. "N' yeah, I went ta' a hero prep school before comin' ta' UAU, n' was trained by some heroes from a nearby agency on top o' that." 

If Farrin stood out among his peers, it was due to his head start in hero academia, as well as Barty's training. Chronokinesis was labeled a "genetic jackpot" quirk by Pinnacle of the Above & Beyond agency, but the quirk did not make the man. Not at all. Had Nana not sent Barty to scoop him up off the street, Farrin would still have been scrounging around for scraps in New York. Yup, quirks were not everything. Freja's presence here exemplified that perfectly. 

"It's a solid start," he commented on her first few jabs. "Brave? Maybe. I dun' know. Just seems the smart move ta' me. I can't be caught without me hands. N' they're no' somethin' an opponent can take away from me so easily. Dun' want ta' be chargin' the enemy wit' a sword just ta' find they've a magnetic quirk or some sort." 

Weapons were risks unto themselves. For one, Farrin wasn't in the business of killing people. Villain or not, he wanted to apprehend his enemies, not kill them. They could also be lost, left behind, or manipulated. Tools were great, but only after one mastered self-sufficiency.

"I think real bravery is reachin' fer heroic heights without a quirk ta' lean on." And he meant it. His tone lacked any modicum of insult or barb. "Really. Exams were tough enough wit' a quirk. Yuh must really know yer stuff. It's an admirable goal yuh' have, n' if this helps yuh' out, even a little, I'll be happy wit' that." 

She wasn't his responsibility, but how could he not offer to help with such fundamentals? If Freja wished to be a hero, she needed to know how to fight with or without gear. Maybe she followed up on his little training session, maybe she didn't, but the least he could do was arm her with some pointers. 

"Anyway, wit' yer height, yuh actually have some decent reach. C'mon, throw a few more punches, this time inta' me palms," he said, holding his hands up, ready to catch each of her jabs. "If we build some power behind those hits, well, we'll be cookin' wit' gasoline."

''Hero prep school? Are those common here? That's quite the resume.'' Went to hero prep and he had been trained by agency heroes. No wonder Farrin was this far ahead of her. They might both be first years, but it was very clear to her that they had taken different paths in life just based on that information alone. She smiled back at him when he complimented her. A solid start was about as good as she could ask for! ''..Right. I hadn't considered that. Magnetic quirks have got to be annoying for any swordsmen to deal with.'' Maybe fists were the way to go and Freja had been wrong to train with the bat?

''H-Huh?'' She was caught off guard by what he said next. Was he complimenting her for going on the hero path without a quirk? It wasn't like she chose to not have a quirk. It was more like the quirk lottery just hated her. Bad luck was what it came down to. Some people like Farrin probably had amazing luck, but people like Freja existed too. She used to have a trash tier quirk that cursed her with even worse luck and had now left her quirkless. The gray-haired girl couldn't help, but blush as she still wasn't used to compliments like that. ''U-Uh I don't know about that! I have my one niche that's about it. I do one thing really well, but you,'' she turned to gesture to the school building. ''And the others, you have a bunch of things you're really good at, I think that's impressive and admirable!'' Anything to take the attention off herself. ''Y-Yeah! It'll help me a ton! I may be a weapon user, but this has given me a lot of insight into a different style of fighting.'' She bowed her head just a bit.

''At you?'' She blinked her eyes and raised her fists again, taking the stance he had shown her earlier as best as she could remember. She didn't really question it either, she was used to always being the weak one around her quirked peers. There wasn't really any risk of hitting him too hard or anything like that when he had a quirk and speed and everything to help mitigate her punches, if he even needed to. ''Power, huh?'' She thought back to the weapon Ana was already crafting for her and grinned. ''Yeah, I'll need a lot of that.'' With a step forward she threw her fist punch, followed by another and soon she was throwing a few jabs at Farrin, aiming for his palms.

nfortunately, it was a resume written in his Mum's blood. A betrayal unlike any other robbed him of the stability, normalcy, and warmth that might have offered him a different life. Who knows how time may have turned him under different circumstances? Maybe he still would have walked the path of heroes. In some times, with mystery's curtains lifted in sifting dreams, he saw himself standing among the greatest. In other timelines, he was hell incarnate. Here: he was just some vagrant that lost it all, but thanks to his nan and a stubborn giant, he met a girl who owned his heart and grew into a man that wanted to make the world better. Resume be damned. Today, that meant helping Freja.

"Appreciated. It's basically been the last four years o' me life. N' I hear more n' more o' 'em Prep schools are poppin' up since the hero industry keeps growin'," Farrin explained as he inspected her form. "N' that's just one possibility. Telekinesis in varying forms, electrical quirks that might be attracted ta' metals. The list goes on."

There were no tools as trustworthy as one's fists and gut instincts. Without a quirk, support gear, and weaponry were Freja's inevitable destination, but one day she would be caught off guard, without her gadgets, gizmos, or whatever it was she would choose to operate with. When that time came, Farrin would see armed still. 

He continued to make small adjustments to her arm placement, nodding as she professed her one-trick-pony approach to heroics. "Never count out a specialist," was his initial reply, before pulling away from her again. "Who do yuh' think wins in a scrap between one fella that practiced ten martial arts one year each n' another that practiced one martial art fer ten years? My money is on the latter. Besides, looks ta' me like yer learnin' somethin' new ta' add ta' yer skillset right now." 

The first few jabs lacked much oomph, but there was something there. It slowly built as she continued. "Turn wit' it a bit more," he'd comment, "dun' just punch me fist, try ta' punch through it!" He'd say. "There we go, now we're gettin' somewhere." She was still a novice, but it took weeks to build a real foundation for the basics. Months to refine them into anything respectable. Still, she was starting to put some of it together. Whether she continued to work on her form was entirely her decision, but now he could say he gave her an in into hand-to-hand combat.

''Yeah... When you put it like that.'' If there was one thing Elias regretted, it was not enquiring more about his sister's time in hero prep school when she was attending in the lead up to UAU. Had he known that he would be attending UA like this in her place, he would definitely have done more to help her. Heck, looking back on it there were so many past conversations he regretted. Pointless fighting over small misunderstandings, not listening to her when she warned him about the crowd he hung out with. It felt wrong, dirty, somehow. Elias was the one in the wrong, the failure, the hopeless. Freja was the promising young talent, the dreamer, heart burning with as much passion as her quirk. So why was Elias the one that survived? Why did he have to live with this curse?

''I put a lot of time into my weapon fighting, but learning hand-to-hand couldn't hurt if I'm fighting some telekinesis overlord.'' She looked down at her fists. In her, well, in Elias's old body, he might have been more built for fist fighting. He was taller, a little more muscular, and yet he had been a coward, to afraid to go in close because of his lack of a quirk. The result was getting overly reliant on blunt weapons. ''Right, I'd say the latter too.'' If anything, meeting Farrin here on the hill proved to her that you couldn't judge someone off of one interaction alone. At the orientation he had been eager to fight people, which had given her the wrong impression of who he actually was. Farrin today was so... Insightful and helpful. He even knew she was quirkless and didn't try to put her down.

''A bit more?'' She reeled her arm in before taking his advice, turning a little more with the next jab. ''Through it?'' She smirked, starting to work up a sweat. ''That won't do, I'm just a human. If I was super maybe it'd be different.'' Taking his advice too literally, she just couldn't visualize herself getting that strong. Either way, this was the start of... Something. She wasn't entirely sure what it was yet. Friendship with Farrin? Adding some new moves to her fighting style? She would have to practice her form a lot more and maybe get some gloves to cushion her fists, but his help here today had lit a spark of interest in her.

When it was all said and done Freja would wipe some sweat off her brow. ''Thanks for showing me. I'll owe you one.'' She smiled, picking her wooden stick back up. ''I'll probably start making my way back, I have a meeting with my roomies soon.'' She turned around and started walking away, stick over her shoulder as she raised her other hand in a wave. ''It was nice meeting you for real, Farrin O'Rourke!''

he was mentally pliable. Adaptable. Quick to learn. That meant more than a score of quirks out in the world. Over-reliance on a single strength, like one's quirk, often molded the most rigid of minds. Why choose to be stone when water was so much more powerful? As strong as Chronokinesis was, Farrin didn't need it to be an absolute menace to many of among their peers. Why? Dedication to his craft, and the discipline Barty instilled in him. 

"I dun' mean literally," he laughed, "I just mean ta' punch as if that's yer objective. That's the sort o' force yuh' need ta' tell yerself ta' muster, if yer just tryin' ta' trounce some deadly opposition. Shoot fer the stars n' yuh' may land on the moon n' all that. N remember, while I'm promotin' self sufficiency 'ere, wit' some gear yuh' very may well end up punchin' through walls. No doubtin' yerself n' where yuh' might go." 

Before long their little training session was winding down though. At the very least, he had armed the unquirked girl with some basics. Whether or not anything came of it was entirely up to her. With enough practice, she could become quite the threat even without a quirk. Slap some gear on her and maybe some of those weapons she leaned on, as long as she maintained her fundamentals, that mix could become quite potent. Powerful enough to contend with many of their quirked-up peers. 

"Likewise, Helt Freja. If yuh' e'er need ta' brush up or want ta' practice more hand ta' hand combat, I'm usually up 'ere trainin' when not in class. Feel free ta' swing by anytime."
