What a wonderful day!

Today was July 15th. That’s right. The July 15th. And if you were as cultured and informed and handsome as Gabriel, then you would’ve known what today was. It was Chugen, the day of gift-giving. A lot of people use it as an excuse to get a gift for anyone, but it’s usually used for your superiors. And while they never worked together in any official capacity, and while Gabriel wasn’t technically a ‘hero,’ there was a particular person he wanted to annoy…

“Mark!” Gabriel exclaimed. As an alumnus, he had access to U.A… with permission, of course! And with approval from the faculty, he was able to get in without notifying Mark of the surprise. Y’see, old dogs gotta stick together. And everyone recognized they were practically best friends. Mark was just a… quiet type. Really, he only woke up to follow his one true love: bullying students. “What a coincidence running into you here.”

Not only had he not run into him, but Gabriel was knocking on Mark’s office. Truly, a headache in the making.

“I’ve brought presents!”

It was rare that Mark was ever in his office, but everyone knew that if you found him in there he was not doing any kind of work. At least, not serious work. Sometimes he could be found cleaning the big Springfield he used frequently in exercises to shoot students, others he'd be found reading "wholesome" magazines. One student claimed he was teaching himself how to juggle, going on to say he was forced to wait out in the hall for fifteen whole minutes before he could come in again. Not many people believed this happened, but many did acknowledge that it was in character.

This particular day Gabe had caught Mark doing something relatively normal: reading a newspaper. Which...the act in of itself was eccentric as who the hell read newspapers these days? Either way, Mark looked over the top of it, scrutinized Gabe, and then went back to reading. "I work here. In fact, I'm busy. I don't trust your 'presents', and we're not friends. In fact, what's your name again? Did I teach you at some point?"

“Wow, rude.” Gabriel let himself in. Apparently, Lonewolf — Er, Mark — was reading a newspaper. But that wasn’t fooling anyone. Everyone knew Mark couldn’t read. Not anything of substance, anyway. His time was spent ogling at those ‘plot-driven mangas’ with scantily clad designs. Not that Gabe had seen any of this, but those were the rumors. Speaking of rumors…

“Don’t act like we aren’t a buddy cop movie in the making. Two halves of the same quirk, the charming, funny, handsome lead. And you, the straight man.” Gabriel snapped his fingers. “A match made in heaven if you ask me.”

Gabriel took a seat and made himself comfortable, placing the gift in his lap.

“Anyway, I’m here to catch up for a bit.” He said. “I just got off my first real hero mission, and I know I’m not a hero, but I did help take down the big bad with the help of my boss.” At this point, he was rambling. It didn’t matter how receptive Mark was. “Was looking for any advice from someone who also is basically human. How do you deal with quirked fighters?”

This was a problem bigger than heroism. This was why he quit vigilantism.

There was too much information being passed at Mark that he had to pause to process. He still didn't remember Gabe, but if he was on campus then that meant he at the very least was allowed by the school to be here. It didn't change the fact that Mark didn't trust him, but at the very least he wasn't an immediate danger.

"Yeah, no. I prefer working alone." It was why Mark had adopted the moniker he currently had, but at that time it was more of a happy accident. He had worked with the occasional hero every now and then, including his father before he died, but that was neither here nor there. "Slugs do the job nicely. Leaves a hell of a mess, but if you absolutely want to delete someone from existence that's a good way. Cheaper than investing in portable artillery. Nonlethal you'll have to just get creative. The old methods of tasers, pepper spray, whatever other police tactics can work, but you'll also need a way to negate their quirk. Seriously, who are you again?" He set the paper down, bringing his attention fully on Gabe.

“Wait, are you serious?” Now Gabe was offended. How could he have been forgotten so easily? He was supposed to have been Mark’s biggest headache. Was he replaced mere moments after his graduation? Or was this some ploy to make him angry… Or worse! Gabriel might have memories from an alternate universe — the truth of his quirk revealing itself. He didn’t look into the past, he looked into alternate timelines!

“Gabe? Gabriel? Handsome pants?” Okay, that last one was made up. “Ring any bells?”

If that didn’t help, then maybe some accolades.

“Premier prop maker. Movie director. Auteur?” At this point, he wasn’t sure he wanted to give Mark the gift. But it might be the only thing that would jog his memory. The only thing that would reunite to brothers across time and space.

“I know you’re getting up there in years, but…” Gabe fidgeted with the gift. “I thought we had something special, Mark.”

Mark stared at Gabe, reaching up to scratch his nose. "You're no movie director I know," he says, setting his other hand on the desk. "And if I taught you and you graduated, I've probably already forgotten you. I don't form connections here. Makes the job easier, especially if you die. Mourning's a time consuming process, and I need that time inventing new ways to torture other students. Make challenges harder than you went through. Either that, or actually doing real work from time to time. Crying makes that harder to do."

He held up a finger, pointing it at Gabe. "Also, I ain't old enough to be your daddy. While it is possible I have kids somewhere out there in the world, at most they would barely be outta diapers. You're too old for that."

Gabriel sighed.

That was the difference between them, wasn’t it? A man who saw years into the past versus a man who saw days. Lonewolf was short-sighted. He only saw from moment to moment. The scope of what he kept track of was so… limited. Gabriel had a different problem. Without indefinite access to his quirk, he had to be more flexible. He had to improvise. And then when he gained context for what he searched for… it was never quite enough. Gabriel always searched for more — for the connective tissues between everything — in hopes of finding the through-line.

“Fine, Mark,” Gabriel said. “You’re not interested in games at the moment.” Gabriel pulled up the gift and left it on the table. “But if you ever wanna catch up, then I’m just a phone call away.”

Stepping out the door, he’d leave Mark to his own devices. Within the box, should he ever unwrap it, were juggling pins. Lonewolf did love to juggle. Everyone knew that.

“Hope he likes the gift,” Gabriel said, looking around with a mischievous grin on his face. “I can’t believe they let me in this place!”

With that, he stormed off before security realized their mistake.
