It never hurts to clear out some bastard fish.

The first time Chirp arrived in Tokyo Bay he was saved by a stunning woman with magical hair — if that were the end of the quirk it’d be impressive enough. Still, doing what he does best, he knew there was more. It isn’t the time or place to reflect on her or the implications of the larger underground groups operating in Japan, he needs to focus on the immediate threat in front of him.

Sun sits high in the sky, the cool ocean breeze is scented with a hint of blood, and Gabriel has a fancy new arm he plans to test. Understanding the basics is one thing, but getting combat experience is another.

He steps onto an otherwise empty beach, as far as he can still, and the water begins to stir. If they were resting, for whatever reason, then he awoke them. Gun in hand, he planned to take a few pictures before he engaged. If there were real, tangible thoughts behind these creatures, then he’d want to know what they were really after.

“Alright, let’s see what y’all want!” It’s only a moment, but he digests the entire of the last 20 minutes up until the point they see him. There isn’t a thought, only feelings. They’re an invasive species… but he wishes there were another way. Is killing them all he could do? “There’s gotta be another way.”

Momo had managed to get lost almost immediately after parting ways with Leo. The path she was certain led to the bus stop she needed to get back to UAU had instead led her back to the shoreline she had been at earlier in the day. Gritty sand still clung to her where it had gotten stuck to her sweat and saltwater from her earlier endeavors of not dying to the overgrown offspring of a rock and a crab.

“Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!”

Momo’s cry of despair upon realizing that she had ended up at the beach again startled a flock of seagulls that were bloated from feasting on the aftermath of earlier skirmishes. They flew off with a disgruntled series of caws, leaving only one bird behind. It wasn’t a seagull though. It wasn’t even technically a bird. It seemed to be a man. Maybe he could help point her in the right direction and away from the monsters? Momo was just a first year. She wasn’t cut out to save the day twice in a row.

“Hey! Mister! Can you help me?”

Oh god.

Gabriel could recognize a freshman anywhere. Now, he didn’t know whether or not they were a hero student. He didn’t know if they were even in university. But he did know they had that young, bullyable energy to them that brought out the high schooler in him. He wasn’t also this friendly, y’know. He was a troubled kid once — most kids are, aren’t they? And loved to pick on these types. Fortunately, he was an adult now. And he had grown past that…

He stuck out his hands, causing a few sparks that would scare off the birds. With a proud smile, one hidden by his mask, he walked over to her.

“Name’s Chirp,” He says. “You shouldn’t be here. There’s gonna be a lot of… fish. Dangerous fish! So, go on. Skidaddle and stay safe.” Gabe’s tone is joking and fun trying to bring levity to the harassment they had previously undergone. “And if you ever need help with birds I’m a call away. A bird whisperer, if you will.”

What he didn’t realize was that he didn’t scare off the birds. The giant fish creatures behind him did. And they were closing in.

“Eh? That’s what I’m trying to tell you! I don’t want to be where the fi-fi-fi… FISH!”

Momo pointed behind Chirp. Her big eyes were wider than normal in surprise and a far too fresh trauma regarding ocean dwellers. Even with as oblivious as she could be, there was no way Momo could miss the hulking scale covered figures lurching toward them across the sandy expanse of the shoreline.

“Not again,” Momo whined. She scuttled back like the crabs from her previous encounters, only with way less legs as she rummaged through her pockets for her yo-yo in a panic and bartering all the while for her life. “I promise I’ll never eat seafood again if you go away!” Momo would absolutely spearhead the Fish are friends, not food, campaign across Japan if the fish would just leave her alone.

It wasn’t the time nor place to reference ancient texts of cinema. A bygone product of an older generation, movies obsessed with quips and levity as a way to let the audience know, they too, were embarrassed of what they were watching. Perhaps it had to do with how cartoonish superheroes presented themselves as opposed to more traditional heroes of the past. How ironic, that they’d eventually set the stage for future heroes — real, authentic heroes with powers beyond comprehension. With a smile, one that the girl wouldn’t see behind his bird head, he confidently ripped the line.

“They’re right behind me, aren’t they?”

A moment passes, but that’s all he can afford before the danger arrives. He can’t bask in the novelty of what had happened. He’d cross it off the bucket list, but that wasn’t the only thing he’d cross. Gabriel doesn’t know why it’s on there, but he also crosses off ‘push a little girl onto the sandy beach before diving into a shoulder roll.’

“Sorry!” He is, but he had saved her life and, more importantly, his own. That’s a joke. “Are you okay?”

He rushes to her side as he assesses the situation. Fighting is an option, but it depends on if she can manage to walk by herself. Maybe the fall injured her, maybe it didn’t. But either way her fear was her biggest detractor — if she couldn’t run by herself, then a tactical retreat might be necessary.
