arrin roamed the halls of the UAU's support labs in search of something. More specifically, someone. It had struck him during a recent training session with one of the university's professors that his lack of ranged options was going to be more of problem than he originally anticipated. Toiling away in his room, scribbling some rough parameters and, perhaps, a basic design, he had come up with a potential answer to his problem - but not one he could create alone. Simply put, he was smart but not SMART smart and he knew. 

"C'mon now, where is e'eryone?" 

Though he knew the university's department of support to be quite full, it appeared he had come on the wrong day. Or something like that. There wasn't a soul in site! Both interior and exterior lights bathed the halls, equipment laid strewn across the many tables in each room he peeked in on, but there were no bodies around. Where did everyone go? 

"Hello!" He called out a little louder than normal, "anybody home?" 

"Think I wandered inta the twilight zone or some shite." 

Farrin wasn't one to rely on a crutch, but if throwing together some gear might see more lives saved, then he'd forgo his pride, because that's what he needed to do. The problem was he sure wasn't building the thing himself. There were greater minds and an entire department dedicated to such a cause. He just had to find one of those greater minds first.  

One opened one door after another, finding not a single student, until he finally did.

Farrin may be wondering why the halls of the support labs were barren, but once he opened the right door, the reason was obvious enough.

The room on the other side was pink. No, really, it was pink. The majority of the workshop was covered in a substance that was basically bubblegum, and if the hero student opened the door wide enough, the bottom of it would stick to the floor. There would be no hope of closing it again without damaging it then.

The only sign that the room was not meant to be pink was a path leading from the doorway to the centre of the room that was devoid of the colour. It held the familiar neutrals instead, and the floor would not have the sticky sensation when stepped on. As proven by the one person who braved the room before the Irishman.

Kei.

Kei was at the end of the cleaned path, sitting on the floor with journal in hand as a few drones overhead continued the meticulous process of ridding the room of its bright hue. One would wonder why the sophomore remained and the reason was simple: someone had to explain what the heck happened here if an educator came upon it before the cleaning was done. And he was the only one here now because the perpetrator and basically everyone else left. So.

He looked up when he heard the door open, hopeful for someone familiar that could help him speed up the process. When it was someone he didn't recognize though his eyes dimmed. He kept on the smile but there's no mistake: he's pained with the burden of fixing someone else's mess. "Hey- you came in at the wrong time sorry."

ho popped the bubblegum balloon in here? Farrin eyed the many flush surfaces, gear, gizmos, and appliances. A whistle was all he could muster at first, still too distracted to find the sophomore stuck mopping up the mess. His eyes locked in on the second year student 

"Yeah, apparently I missed the carnival," he replied, his hand clutching the novice attempt at blueprints to shield them from any potential pink spray or whatever the heck caused the mess. "So what happened in 'ere?" 

The freshmen followed the trail that led to Kei, carefully avoiding the pink substance. He nudged a small doodad aside with his shoe, then kept on his approach. "N' why're you the only one cleanin' it up? Need any help, lad? I dun' know what this stuff is, but I'm rather quick on me' feet." 

Would everything be put back where it belonged? No. But Farrin could crunch an hour-long sweep of the room down to about five minutes. Besides, if this was a proper support student and not someone stuck with janitorial duties, he could be the answer to Farrin's questions. Maybe even bring his little dream project alive! 

"Me name's Farrin, Farrin O'Rourke. Freshmen o' the heroics department," Farrin said, offering a hand to Kei for shaking and helping the support student up off the floor if he cared to stand. 

Groups of people were a headache. A younger Farrin plotted a course between every crowd splotched across the big apple's busy streets. They were all so loud and often obnoxious. One or two people? That he could handle. This wasn't nearly as taxing as the day everyone approached him on his grassy hill in the training fields the other day. This he could do.

Kei couldn't help but let out a tired laugh. He hadn't done any physical labour but the stress of dealing with the mess alone was already wearing him out. "Someone was workin' on a material that was simple and cheap to reproduce." He gestured at the room around them. "This is that material. The container just exploded from the sheer amount of the stuff.

"The people who made it got drenched in it too. I came in later, they explained what happened to me, and I told them I could cover for them while they cleaned themselves up. They ne- haven't. Come back yet." A last minute correction, Kei still wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt even though it's been an hour. Maybe they got caught in something along the way. It'd be easy given the state they're in.

He looked up at the stranger with brows raised. "You would? It's sticky- harmless but I can't touch it." He worried about how it would react to his hands. Was it fluid enough for him to absorb? He didn't want to find out what would happen if it entered his system.

So he took the offered hand instead, filing away the fact his blood was normal as he let the other student pull him to stand. If he had a mutation it didn't affect his blood. "Oh, hero student! I'm Kei Hada, sophomore in the department of support." And then a thought occurred to him. If a hero student was here... Kei grimaced "You're here for some gear aren't you? God, I'm sorry for draggin' you in this mess."

ei Hada. A sophomore in the support department. Perhaps it was for the best he hadn't run into another of the support department's students first. This lad would already have some experience under his belt. And Farrin wouldn't even have to feel too bad about asking for help. 

"Right on the money, lad, n' think nothin' of it! I wish yer' classmates woulda returned, but I see it as an opportunity ta' square things out a bit if yer willin' ta' help me wit' some gear. Do I need anythin', in particular, ta' clean this stuff, or will the ol' mop n' bucket o' water do?" 

Farrin laid out his extremely rudimentary blueprint and notes on the marble top of a nearby table. On a spot untouched by the pink sticky substance, of course. Whether with a mop and plain old water, which he'd fetch in a flash, or a particular substance of any sort Kei provided, Farrin would get ready to work the floor over. That'd be easier with his time-turned-speed.

"I know me' doodles won't likely be o' much help," he said, nodding toward the notes and drawing he just set on the table, "but basically I'm thinkin' o' attachin' wrist-mounted launchers o' some sort ta' me hero outfit ta' give me some ranged options." 

Farrin would kick up into his temporal state, a few fiery white wisps falling off his form, joined by the crackle of emerald electrical energy. Neither interacted with the lab, lacking the actual properties of fire or electricity. In nothing short of a blink and blur, the freshman would work his way over the mess at the periphery of the room, moving from the outward in. 

"I've a time-related quirk. Let's me speed things up n' slow 'em down, so I dun' think I'll need too powerful or complex a firin' mechanism since I can accelerate the projectiles meself, but I'd like ta' keep the launchers n munitions small yet plentiful. Ideally, able ta' fire some solid projectiles. No' lookin' fer lethal, clearly, but I lack much in the way o' range currently. If I could integrate some sorta shock or stun rounds n' freezin' adhesives or somethin' o the sort, it would be a big help," he laid out a mouthful, stopping to explain his thoughts before going back to cleaning the exterior of the room.

"Oh really? Sure, I can see what ideas you got!" Kei was honed in on the prospect of a new project almost immediately. Working on it was the least he could do for the guy since he offered to help clean up the place.

And he was doing that so fast too. As soon as Kei said that soap and water was enough (that was what the creators told him at least; he hoped they were right so they had a chance at washing it off themselves), the freshman had become a blur, working faster than even the drones at mopping the floors. He tried to make sense of what's going on until the guy just answered that question for him. "Time Quirk? Oh wow, that's so cool!"

Satisfied with that mystery solved (and because it was getting too difficult to keep track of him), the support student turned to the drafts laid out on the table as Farrin worked, nodding at his explanation as cross-shaped eyes hovered over the notes. "Yeah, would make sense to keep the firin' power low since you could just up their speed with your Quirk, so we'll focus on keepin' it all compact." Kei smoothed out the corner of a sheet that was curling over. "I did make a prototype firearm that could switch between different ammo, I could reuse that mechanism here."

He read over the notes on bullet types, shifting his toothpick in thought. "Stun bullets, freezin' bullets... could even add some trackers in case you're at risk of losin' someone." Another laugh escaped him at the mention of adhesives and he gestured to the room they're in again. "I could ask 'em if they could lend this stuff for the project, they owe you for helpin' them out while they're away."

ei appeared the friendly sort. Willing to entertain Farrin's doodles too? Already aces in the time-turner's book. A silent glee inched its way through Farrin's veins. The idea wasn't completely crazy. Kei's insights made it sound not only within the realm of possibility but perhaps quite feasible. Going by the lad's tone at least. 

"If possible, maybe somethin' that generates heat as well? Wouldn't be takin' shots at people wit' it, but could be useful against cold quirks n' the sort - if it's no' too complicated ta' pack that all in somethin' small n' durable." 

The front line of defense, or in this case offense, was always Farrin's fists. If these launchers were wrist-mounted they needed to not only be small, but enduring. A hard ask, but hopefully the lack of a complex firing mechanism would make it possible.

"Apologies if I'm askin' fer a lot 'ere. I never really thought I'd be lookin' fer' extra gear. No takin' a swipe at yer department's work, but I always figured I'd rather no' rely on tools that could be taken away, but I'm realizin' more n' more from me sparrin' matches n' classes that I need some ranged options. Figure if I'm goin' down that road, may as well get the most out o' it." 

After a pause, Farrin went back to work speeding around the room and washing away the pink adhesive. Pink was not his color, but if this stuff could keep a villain pinned to the pavement, who cared what color it was? He ran a watery rag over the many desks, tables, and chairs. Slowly but surely, the mess was beaten back. 

"If it can keep a villain down, I won't complain!" He shouted while riding another workstation of the substance. "N' thank again fer' yer help, lad! Yuh really think it'll be possible ta' build somethin' that can store that sort o' ammo, while keepin' it small, n' durable?"

"Ooh heated bullets. That'll be tough when you got freezin' ones as well." The support student squinted at the concept, metaphorical cogs turning his head as he tried to think. "Unless..."

Kei scanned the table around the diagram, eyes eventually landing on a multi-coloured pan that was fortunately safe from the pink explosion. He took it from its holder. "Do you mind if I write on this?" Hopefully the guy didn't, he needed his own notes to write down if he was going to work on his project.

If Farrin didn't mind, Kei would scribble on the blueprint, shading one of the launchers in blue and the other in red. "We could fit some heated bullets in one wrist and the ice ones in the other so they don't affect each other by goin' through the same launcher. You'll just have to remember which fires which."

He waved a hand at the freshman's apology, face full of understanding if the guy were to look his way in the midst of his cleaning. "Hey, you're good, really! Gettin' requests like this is the norm for me, and you've been really understandin' of my thoughts so far." Kei turned away from the blueprints and leaned his back against the edge of the table. "I get bein' unsure about havin' gear with you. There's Quirks out there that can give you everythin' you need, and bein' able to speed up and slow down yourself and things around you is already powerful!

"Havin' somethin' that hits faraway targets would definitely benefit you though. I dunno if your Quirk wears you out but givin' yourself the option to fall back on a device would let you fight longer for sure. Havin' them be used against you is a risk but at least we'd be minimizin' it by makin' these launchers wearable and reliant on your Quirk to work properly."

The cleaning drones were focusing on the walls and ceiling at this point, the floor and furniture almost spotless as a result of Farrin and the bots' efforts. "No problem! It's definitely doable if you give me a week or two to get a prototype ready."

o no, by all means," Farrin said, cutting to a stop with most of the room cleaned, gesturing toward the blueprint. Farrin's transcripts read B in most of his academic classes. Not the worst, but neither the best. Engineering, math, and sciences were the support students' domain. His blueprint probably looked like some middle program student's doodles to a second-year support student like Kei. If he was able to convey the basic concept, that was a win in his book. 

"Works fer' me," he replied in regards to the division of munitions. "will keep the heated rounds on me' left side since I dun' intend on usin' 'em often." Though Farrin had no issue bringing the hammer down on villainy, he didn't want to kill anyone. The incendiary's place among his arsenal was an insurance policy against any armed with cold quirks or otherwise found themselves susceptible to heat. There were quirks out there that could alter a person's entire body. If someone out there could turn into some wooden golem or something like that, he needed to be ready. 

"Thanks, lad. Yeah, dun' want ta' let pride n' some such get in the way o' efficiency. Like I said, I thought before I could get by wit' me' own born talents, skills, n such, but I can't let that thinkin' block me off from potential strategic avenues that might stop people from gettin' hurt." 

Pride stood chief among Farrin's seven sins. There was nothing wrong with one having pride in themselves and their work. As a matter of fact, Farrin encouraged it in others. Pride could be a boon just as much as it could be a sin. The latter though, well, when you had too much pride it became a problem. History told many a tale of overconfidence and its ability to bring down empires. That wouldn't be Farrin's fate. 

"Take all the time yuh' need. Yer doin' me the favor 'ere! Eh, one last question though if yuh' no' mind. Will these things require gunpowder or do yuh' have another delivery system in mind?" 

He was the one asking for incendiaries, but that could be a potential problem near gunpowder. Or if his enemies had fire-based quirks. He needed to know the specifics going into his little idea before using it. "N' thanks fer' helpin' me out." Had to be respectful, just as Mum hammered into him.

Kei gave a nod and let out an awkward laugh as he realized something. "Heated rounds in your left. Right." Wrong, in fact, as he shaded the right device in red and the left in blue. He added words to the blueprint to remind him of which launcher went in which side. While it didn't seem to matter as the bands were interchangeable, it was an initial design. Who knew if something about it will change. Better safe than sorry in his eyes.

He smiled at the humility the freshman displayed. "For sure. You can train to be as strong as you possibly could, but we all got our limits. Acknowledgin' that and thinkin' of ways to get around it is what saves people." Whether it be new gear or teaming up with others, Kei was a heavy advocate for never doing things on your own. Especially if lives were going to be on the line. Arrogance held a heavy price in their line of business.

The support student made a face at the idea of using gunpowder. "Yeah, that wouldn't be good when you're gonna have heated rounds in your wrists. I was thinkin' compressed air. Usually they can't push bullets out as far as gunpowder could, but your Quirk should be able to give the additional distance it needs."

More notes were written. He appreciated the insight Farrin had. Usually it was up to him to think of the least harmful ways to make something work, as the client cared more about the end result than methods the creator would take to get there, so it was nice to see the freshman interested in ensuring the whole process was sound versus just the initial request.

By the time the support student finished jotting down his thoughts, the room was clean. Not an inch of the sticky substance was left to be seen, and a drone was hovering near the floor to air-dry the last of the water from the mopping. "Man, it's like it never even happened," Kei couldn't help but quip. "But no, thank you! The lab wouldn't have been cleaned up as fast as it did if it weren't for you."

He reached behind himself to show off the draft that Farrin started and he continued on - not finished, that'd be a lie - revealing the chicken scratches that were his own handwriting in addition to the time turner's. "This is what we have so far! If it's good I could take it on, and I'll let ya know when you can test it out! Do you have a way for me to call ya?"

recisely," Farrin agreed, no matter how much it pained him. In another life, he would have tried to shoulder everything he could without relying on gear to compensate for his and his quirk's shortcomings, but not in this on. There was too much on the line, and too many enemies to add his ego to the list. "No' enemy out there yuh' find worse than yerself," his mother said in his youth. Not to him, he was too young to require such wisdom bombs, but he heard her say it enough. Those small moments and memories kept her alive in a way, guiding him still. 

"That's what I was thinkin'. No' that I would doubt yer capabilities, but seems risky ta' use traditional firearms methodology on a device so small n' wit' such an array of ammunition types. N' appreciated fer lettin' me know what yer' thinkin'. I may not be able ta' wrap me' head around the ins n' outs o' gear like you n' yer class can, but I'd rather have an idea how it's all gonna work. The more yuh' know n' all that." 

There was the distinct possibility he might need to make minor field repairs at some point. Not something he could do without some basic understanding of Kei's method of approach. Had he opted to use gunpowder, there was even the chance he would have to ditch the gloves if it seemed they were about to blow. Luckily, the latter would never be an issue. In any case, knowledge was often power. If he couldn't deal with range on his own, he needed to know the workings of the tools he used to compensate. Knowledge. Power. Power he'd use to save people. 

"That doesn't make up fer' the work I'm askin' fer yuh', lad, but thanks again! N' yuh, me' cell number is [xxx-xxx-xxxx], just shoot me a message real quick I can save yuh' as a contact n' whenever it's done I'll come runnin'! N' let me know if yuh' e'er need help wit' somethin' like this again," he parted his arms out and gestured toward the room. "Least I could do."
