The Doctor is In"Thank you for joining us today, Kurokami, Faraday. Please, take a seat." Hebiru said while gesturing at the other two office chairs next to her wall desk. "Just a moment. Would either of you like anything to drinks?" She added while waving a hand towards the coffee machine and adjacent water cooler next to the cabinet. Finishing up the paperwork she was handling Hebiru handed it off to her assistant.
"Shokuhou, please flip the sign to 'busy' on your way out."
"Will do, Doctor Yanai." Shokuhou replied with a mock salute towards Hebiru and a rueful smile towards Michael and Gen, mouthing 'good luck' before leaving the room.
"Now then," Hebiru began while turning to face them. "Let's get started, shall we?"
Opening a locked cabinet drawer she pulled out a rather hefty folder and leafed through it.
"Kurokami Gen. I'm sure you already have a good idea of why you're here but perhaps you'd like to explain it yourself?"
Acknowledging one's own mistakes and misdeeds was the first step towards correcting them. If someone refused to accept that they'd done wrong no outside help could possibly get through to them. There was far too much truth to the saying that change had to come from within for Hebiru's liking but over the years she had gained plenty of experience in adapting to unfortunate truths. It was why she'd volunteered to handle this matter instead of leaving it to Counselor Gotoh. Judging by the data available a hard hand was much more likely to get the desired result or failing that, deal with the situation in an appropriate matter.
"As the most involved party in the latest... let's say incident, if you at any point wish to chime in please do not hesitate, Faraday. Any thoughts or comments are welcome."
Her explanation finished she continued offhandedly leafing through the folder while paying attention to the two students. Whatever they said would be crucial in determining how this situation was to be handled.

Ah shit, here we go again.[break][break]
To say that Kurokami Gen was familiar with U.A.U.’s disciplinary system would be a shoe-in for understatement of the year. He’d seen enough of these meetings to know how they went. Explain what you did, give some sympathetic reason, say you’re going to do better next time, get a slap on the wrist and go on without any real consequences. If anything, it was one of the more true-to-life parts of this farce they call a Heroics Department. However, something was different this time, and it wasn’t just the faculty member unlucky enough to sit opposite of him, no, it was something he noticed even before walking into this office.[break][break]
It was that Fucking Piece of Shit.[break][break]
That Motherfucking Balloon Boy.[break][break]
Why was he here?[break][break]
Even his Quirk could not hide his disdain and disgust, both apparent at the mere sight of him. He hoped he was here for medical reasons. Wouldn’t that be nice? He tried to ignore him. It was best to keep one’s emotions under control for these kinds of hearings, especially ones as volatile as hatred.[break][break]
Once inside, his fears were confirmed. That empty-headed dumbfuck wasn’t here to get stitches, he was here to do some snitching. He was the nurse’s star witness. Here to corroborate and contradict any arguments the devil contrived. How annoying of her. Though, if she wanted to throw him off his game, she’d need to try harder than that. [break][break]
With both legs crossed and a cheek resting over his knuckles, Gen would take a seat, and partake in the doctor’s cute little cross-examination. Of course, not before having her stooge fetch him a nice, hot, cup of Joe. [break][break]
Of course, this was about that little incident at the tech event. Something about making the school look bad on TV. He didn’t know why there was such a fuss. He topped the damage charts, had the best KDA, and showcased what that tech could really do in competent hands. Really, they should've been thanking him.[break][break]
“What’s there to say?” He shrugged his shoulders, indifferently. “I played to win, and I guess some people just couldn’t handle it.” It was as if those kids were beneath him. Whatever damage he did to them or the school was none of his concern. He threw his hands up, before adding.“So much for Plus Ultra, am I right?” [break][break]
"Apparently, the rockslide I caused put a few idiots on the shelf." A few was an understatement, and he knew it, even without all of the facts. One guy in particular had to be hospitalized. How many broken bones was it again? Did he even bother remembering their names? God, no. Why bother? “But I’m sure you already knew about that, Doc.” After all, she treated them.[break][break]

Michael Faraday
What Was Expected
Michael came in and took his seat. It had been quite the struggle after the equipment exhibition he had struggled through. Not having access to his quirk and relying on unfamiliar gadgetry had proved difficult to help and protect as many people as he wanted to. Ideally he would have been able to prevent anyone from getting hurt. He hadn't really cared that much to get to the top of the mountain as instructed...
The doctor was doing their best to make Michael and Gen comfortable before the conversation they needed to have. Gen was very clearly against this whole interaction and from his body language was already uncomfortable with Michael's presence. Michael could understand that feeling, he was not particularly thrilled to be in Kurokami-senpai's presence... Michael had been spending a lot of his free time after the event checking on and helping the people that had been injured in Gen's performance on the mountain. Michael also felt bad because he hadn't really had an opportunity to apologize again for punching Gen to try knocking him out. As effective as knocking someone unconscious is for incapacitating them, it's not really good for their brain. Michael hadn't seen him at the infirmary while checking on other students, so he hoped that Kurokami had gotten the treatment needed.
From the doctor's words it seemed Kurokami was well-known among the UAU Faculty and their tone definitely made it seem that this was a common occurrence. Gen was rather nonchalant about the whole affair. He seemed to feel more annoyed by this conversation than the fact that he had tried to seriously injure many students and succeeded with a few. But he did bring up a point... it wasn't good but it was valid. The event was meant to be a competition, regardless of how Michael had approached it, Kurokami-senpai was doing what was asked of him.
"Kurokami-senpai is right." Michael said, surprisingly agreeing with his dangerous schoolmate. "The whole point of the event was to showcase the gear supplied to us and get to the peak. While his use of the equipment was reckless and malicious, it was within the structure of the competition. While he can be faulted for making less of an effort to reach the goal, his unheroic behavior is justified by the requirements."
Michael had been struggling with the fact that his own approach to the event was diametrically opposed to Gen's but was equally as misguided. Michael hadn't been focused on the goal. He went out of his way for the safety and accession of his peers rather than completing the mission. Both Michael and Gen had been focused on everything but their objective. While arguably it is a good thing to try to keep people safe, if the mission calls for drastic action or devout focus on achieving the objective, Michael would have failed just as badly as Kurokami had.
"Kurokami-senpai shouldn't have had access to such technology if he wasn't expected to use it. And if the engineers hadn't seen the negative features that their gadget could have exploited, its good they see now just how dangerous such equipment can be in the hands of someone so desperate." Michael turned to Gen and said, "No offense..."
Michael was still deeply certain that Gen only acted out of fear, and to so enthusiastically use such dangerous items on his fellow students, Gen must be hiding significant fear and trauma.
Notes & Tags: Kurokami Gen | Yanai Hebiru TLDR: Michael actually feels that Gen acted within the rules of the event and that he had just acted out because of his fear and trauma with dangerous technology for someone as desperate as he was

The Doctor is InHebiru waited for both of them to finish speaking before addressing what they said. Nuance was likely to be the main thing here that she'd need to help them understand. Taking a sip of her coffee she ignored Gen's jibe, fully aware that it was made solely to rile her up. Unfortunately for him her quirk and experience make it so things like that don't quite work on her. With the tap of ceramic on hard plastic her mug was set down on the desk and she looked at each of them in turn before beginning.
"Like any motto Plus Ultra can be used to justify the completely wrong acts," Hebiru began. A great deal of villainous ones could be argued to fall under it too. Part of the goal here at UAU was to ingrain the right idea but it appeared they had some work left on that. "To give one's all and to go further beyond. It is how greatness is achieved, both good and bad. Differentiating what falls into which category can at times be difficult."
She didn't disagree fully with what they said but their youth and lack of experience was causing them to miss some of the nuance of the situation.
"It is important not to miss the forest for the trees. The purpose of the event was to see how the future protectors of Tokyo would react in a variety of unforeseen circumstances, deal with unpredictable variables and handle situations that were far from ideal. Unfortunately Kurokami's was rather telling."
In the aftermath of the tragedies striking Tokyo it was quite important to prepare prospective students in advance, not to mention alleviate the concerns of worried citizens by showing that their future was secure and hero society was far from finished. While Gen's actions certainly assisted in the former the latter is where matters grew troublesome. The unfortunate, contradictory mix of public opinion being both fickle and bad first impressions sticking far more than any attempts to correct them meant they had their work cut out for them.
"It has quite the chance of turning into a PR disaster. One that would affect -and is affecting- both UAU and Kurokami Gen personally. I believe I need not explain how such matters can complicate student life and more importantly future career potential as well."
Hebiru would be inquiring into which idiot gave a bomb-dropping zeppelin to a student. She'd like to have a talk with whoever decided that was a good idea. Right now however there were more important things to focus on.
"It's high time we addressed the facts and determine a course forward. I would like to stress the importance of making the most of this," she left what the alternative would be unspoken. "Faraday, your cooperation should you agree will of course result in extra credit." Not that he as one of the more promising first years had need of it but to leave good unrewarded was the same as making evil more appealing. "Naturally you possess the right to at any point prior to the conclusion of this matter to withdraw your cooperation. There is no shame in doing so," Hebiru made sure to emphasize. Involving another student in a matter such as this was rather unorthodox but desperate times called for desperate measures.
"We," with which she meant UAU, "have taken a hands-off approach for quite a while but it appears this is no longer viable."
They had been hoping Gen would manage to correct course by himself but there is only so much leeway they could give before the ignoring the problem any longer would become willful ignorance instead of extended goodwill. "Let us begin by addressing some of the more major misdeeds both inside and outside of this event before we move onto the meat of the matter." Taking another swig of her coffee she put the mug back down before leafing through her folder once more.
"Attempted bombing of fellow students. Attempts to dissuade fellow students from continuing their education and give up on their chosen future profession. A second attempted bombing of your fellow students," Hebiru said pointedly, her head still tilted down to read her documents while she raised her gaze to look at Gen, the pose making it look as if she were glaring over a pair of invisible glasses. She wasn't gonna mention the near death of Jack Orion that had given the faculty quite the scare. That could be turned around too easily given the exact circumstances and Hebiru wasn't interested in providing a single weak point in her entire list he could target to ignore everything else. "And all of that is purely what happened within the arena. Kurokami Gen, your PR is tanking to the point it will cause immediate problems unless you avert course both immediately and drastically."
The back of her fingers slapped against the papers she was holding several times.
"Attempted sabotage of a student-organised event. Several complaints from the Management Department in regards to their seminar. The gas cloud incident involving miss Kanjo. Rumours of several other incidents involving said student including and up to speculation of you targeting her roommate. The list goes on, Kurokami. What do you have to say for yourself?"

It took every ounce of Gen’s almost restraint not to snap at Michael’s condescending little speech. God, what a fucking dweeb. Oh, Kurokami-senpai didn’t make an effort to reach the top. He wasn’t trying hard enough, sensei. His behavior is unheroic. Give me a fucking break. Kick rocks, you dumb motherfucker. That nurse wasn't any better. Hearing her talk about Plus Ultra, good and evil, the real meaning of Christmas and other equally vapid concepts was like nails on a fucking chalkboard to him. Miss me with that bullshit, he thought. [break][break] Hearing her talk about his crimes? Oh that was like music to his ears, and damn, did that snake lady know how to sing! A mix of unnatural glee and pride were plain for all over to see. Assault, harassment and domestic terrorism, all just in the last month. If anything, he needed to pump those numbers up. The only thing that seemed to interrupt his enjoyment was a puzzled look as she brought up Jun’s roommate. Is that how she saw it? Oh, how adorable. The curiosity came as fast as it went, vanishing without a trace the moment she moved on to his next misdeed.[break][break]
Gorgon was no joke. She might’ve drawn the short straw on this one, but she was by no means unprepared. Her framing of the conversation was exemplary, using arguments that Gen would find persuasive, while cutting off any easy outs in his path; her use props was great trick, too, with the folder giving an air of legitimacy and evidence to her words; and the way she commanded the room was spectacular, getting his attention in spite of his seething hatred for the boy sitting by his side. All in all, he couldn’t help but think she could make a good prosecutor. If he didn’t have to save face right now, he’d compliment her work, but unfortunately for her, she had to screw it all up by roping that rubber martyr into this mess.[break][break]
Never letting his mask drop, Gen paused for a moment, looking out into the distance. His eyes scanning for the nearest window, miming contemplation. “Hmmm… what do I have to say?” There was never any doubt that he was taking the piss, but still, he wasn’t about to incriminate himself. “Not guilty, Your Honor.” Of course, if she wanted to put him on trial, he had plenty of courtroom experience to fight back.[break][break]
“You want to discuss facts, though? Let’s discuss facts, then!” Oh, you could bet he was going to love every second of this part.[break][break]
“Are you going to be more ‘hands-on’ with the real culprit of that gas attack?” Gen wasn’t about to take the fall for someone else being an emotional trainwreck. Fuck that shit. Junsuina, you could go right under that bus, for all he cared right now. “‘Cause last I checked, I’m not the one who lost control of my Quirk back there.” Oh yeah, he fanned those flames alright, but facts are facts, and unless she was willing to perjure herself, Hebiru had no case for blaming him for it. “Jun-chan can break someone’s arm, set off a mass terror attack and all she gets is a slap on the wrist.” [break][break]
“Moving on, you want to talk about that seminar? By all means.” Now that was one he could really take pride in. “You can say I was rude or out-of-line, but if the assignment was to make an impact, then I killed it.” Oh, she really screwed up here. An unforced error if there ever was one. “While we’re on that topic, why don’t we bring in that girl who attacked the audience?” Again, another case of Gen provoking, while someone else broke the rules for him. “I didn’t see her waiting outside the office, did you, Michael?” He turned towards that dumb piece of shit, before looking back at the doctor, trying not to let the mere sight of him flare his temper. ”Is she getting a 'hands-on' approach?” By now, anyone could see the pattern beginning to build up in his testimony, both for and against his case. “Just checking…” [break][break]
“And suuuuuure, it's a bit of a bad look for an aspiring Hero to set off a couple of small controlled explosives relatively close to a few students during a public exercise.” His eyes shifted to the right, where living proof of his counter-argument was sitting next to him. “It's also a bad look to almost die trying to save a fucking villain, of all people.” There was a little more mustard behind this one. He’d gotten over the previous offenses, even if they involved him almost dying in them, but this was different, somehow. For once, a hint of genuine anger coursed through his tongue. ”But here you are, giving this asshole extra credits.” His hand gestured toward his naive junior.[break][break]
His mouth was faster than his brain there. His tone was out of line. He wasn’t going to apologize, but the deep breath he took should ease any worries of any outwardly hateful screed spewing out of his mouth. [break][break]
“Back on track, though, let's talk about my ‘PR tanking’, shall we?” You could bet your ass Gen was doing some air quotes here. “I believe it was the great Jordan Belfort who said ‘there’s no such thing as bad publicity’, and I’m inclined to agree.” Both of his hands snapped shut, before his thumbs pointed back at his body. “All for One is on everyone’s minds and meanwhile, all your boring-ass boy scouts? They’re old news.” The numbers didn't lie, the biggest story out of that event were his actions. If they weren't this meeting wouldn't be happening, allegedly. “The world’s already forgotten about them!” She could’ve related to that, right? Trying and failing to stand out in the face of much more interesting and talented peers. “If you ask me, they’ve got bigger PR issues than I do, but they don’t get this cute little pow-wow, do they?” There it was again, the connective tissue behind his defense, one that would become relevant as he headed into his conclusion.[break][break]
“Now, I’ve made it pretty clear that others has the same rap sheet I do, if not worse.” The inhuman piece of garbage threw his hands in the air. What can you do? It is what it is. “When they make a mess, though, you teachers turn the other cheek, or you give ‘em a slap on the wrist or hell, sometimes you even hand out rewards.” He leaned in, before finally saying the quiet part out loud. “It’s blatant favoritism, and to be honest, I’m sick of it.” There was a double standard in this school, everyone else had a dozen free passes. Gen? Not so much. But why, though? Well, don’t you worry, ‘cause he already had the answer ready to go.[break][break]
“The reason I’m here isn’t because of some PR disaster, or because of complaints, or because of anything else you said.” That was all bullshit. It couldn’t just be that Gen was a public embarrassment. There had to be something else. “It’s because you boys at the faculty are scared shitless!” A conspiracy, engineered against him in particular. It was Kurokami Gen vs the World, just as it always was. Michael Faraday
We Could Be Heroes
Michael listened to the doctor list out crime after crime, misdeed after misdeed, malicious action filled with malicious contempt. As much as Michael wanted to see the good in people, it was clear Gen wanted to show nothing but the bad. That wasn't to say he was a bad person, after all, he was here at UAU. He had to have some desire to do good, even if it was for selfish reasons, why go through all this if it wasn't to become a hero. Kurokami-senpai would need to be some kind of moron to waste that much time and effort.
Michael heard Gen try to talk his way out of this, using technicalities and attempts to pass the buck. Michael had already stood up for him but such reckless disregard for accountability, especially for all the people he hurt... it needed to change. He needed to change. And Michael was going to help him.
"It was actually P.T. Barnum that said that, and you probably shouldn't take life style advice from someone that manipulated, used and abused others for his own gain. Though Jordon Belfort is hardly a better role model..." Michael said, correcting Gen's quoted source. Michael sighed and turned himself fully to face Gen.
"Kurokami-senpai, I know its hard and frightening to trust in and be trusted by others, but you don't need to make excuses. You don't have to face this alone. You came to UAU to become a hero; whatever the capacity for reason, you still want to be a hero. It can seem easier to push others away and twist the words and situations to spin yourself into the gray, but you don't need to hide. You don't need to hide from the hero you can.
It isn't fair that you have to work with the perception others have of you. You do all of this just because you feel betrayed and neglected. Not just by the faculty and your peers, but by heroes in general. I can understand that. You see the way heroes are is ineffective, and maybe you're right, but we can't give up hope. Just because villain and vigilantes can be more bombastic with their methods doesn't justify their morals. We have to be better in order to make things better. That's the true meaning behind Plus Ultra.
You see the world differently. You see heroism differently. Show me. Let me see why you believe that, but let me do the same for you. Let me show you doing things morally and compassionately doesn't have to be ineffective. If we are strong enough, smart enough, good enough, we can change the world a thousand times more than the pain inflicted by a villain or the vengeance delivered by a vigilante."
Michael looked back to the doctor. "I don't need any extra credit from this. But if Kurokami-senpai is willing to work with me, I'd like to try to absolve him of negative record."
Michael smiled towards Gen, "You don't need to be like me, but maybe we can learn from each other and find some common ground that will allow us become the heroes we need in the world."

“OH MY GOOOOD!” That was it. He couldn’t take it anymore. Gen could keep his charade up all day with the nurse, no matter how scathing her claims, but Michael. Oh, this fucking guy. Why didn’t he just… “SHUT THE FUCK UP, DUDE!” [break][break]
Wrath had broken through his mask, leaving all sorts of cracks in the part he played. His chair swiveled away from the teacher, facing the red, rubber man in front of him. A deep sigh came and went, before he added. “There really is nothing but air in there, huh?” [break][break]
“You empty-headed dumbfuck!” His claims to innocence be damned. He just had enough of this piece of shit. “I didn’t come here to be a nice guy or because I'm disillusioned or whatever, I came here to make money!” His thumb rubbed itself with his middle and index fingers. “I’m not hiding because I’m afraid or whatever bullshit you made up in your head in advance. This dipshit had fabricated so many baseless assumptions about him, Gen had to wonder if he was one of those famous empaths. “I'm just as awful and greedy as everyone here, I just don't hide ít behind fake smiles or sad backstories.”[break][break]
“And what the fuck are you talking about?!? There's no middle ground here!” The mere thought of them coming to some compromise was enough to give Gen an aneurysm. Both of his hands went to his head in a clear show of just how fucking tilted he was. “What am I supposed to learn from you? Please, enlighten me.” Gen lacked a lot of things these bright prospects took for granted, but Michael’s attempts at redemption rang hollow. Michael just wasn’t good enough for it, or maybe it was more accurate to say he was too “good”. “How to throw exams? How to believe everything you hear on TV? How to kick the bucket at 24?” All valid critiques, aimed at someone who was living a fantasy. “You’re living in a fantasy, kid. Get real!”[break][break]
The fact of the matter was…[break][break]
“I wanna’ live rich, you wanna’ die young, there’s no middle ground here.”[break][break]

Michael Faraday
Just for One Day
"So you’re afraid of dying." Michael said bluntly from everything that Gen spewed out of anger.
"There is a more poignant quote that is in the same vein as the one you misquoted: ‘There’s only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.’ The same can be said about being forgotten. It’s easy to overlook or forget someone that isn’t getting the attention they need. I have never had the luxury of not standing out in a negative way. I have had others all my life say I should be come a television personality, leave being a hero to stronger and better people, I can just exist on my parents money and rest all my laurels on the fact that I’m recognizable and friendly. But that’s not me. No matter how much anyone wants to push me into that hole, I want to be a hero. And the same is for you.
You want money and fame, so you never feel without. You want people to be thinking about you and have the means to live comfortably. You don’t want to die alone and forgotten. You COULD have been a villain and accomplished the same thing, but you didn’t. You still could but I see someone better, the you that you want people to accept you as. You can try to be angry and vicious, but even if you were as bad you try to be, you STILL need help.
You’re right. I am too soft, but I don’t give up on my convictions. You can hate me, talk down to me, yell at me, but I’m not going to stop trying to help you. It’s not about trying to change you, it’s about helping you be who you want to be. You want to be successful, famous and rich? Then you need to accept there are better ways than being hated, infamous and morally corrupt. I may very well die young because I am too trusting and compassionate. People will take advantage of that kindness, but it’s not a weakness. I will make myself strong enough to be able to handle the consequences of my morality. So you need to be strong enough to do the same. You want to be how you are, fine. But you still need the power and resources to pull it off.
Let me help you! Let the school help you! There are BETTER ways to achieve what you want!”
Despite Michael’s soft nature, he stood his ground (figuratively, he remained seated). Michael worried about the kind of person Gen would become if he stopped wanting to be a hero. He already spoke vindictively about his teachers and peers. If Michael could just get him to see he could achieve what he wanted without having to act like a villain to achieve it, maybe Gen would be able to get the money he wanted instead of the contempt he was accumulating. Michael had to try, he couldn’t just ignore someone that needed help.

The Doctor is InHebiru almost sighed at Gen's theatrical denial. Him acting as if he were on trial made it clear he was not taking this seriously in the slightest. That would be the first thing she had to address before anything else would be possible. Well, that and making him admit his wrongs instead of attempting to take refuge in audacity or agitate her by acting proud of his misdeeds.
"Please refrain from insulting your fellow students." She offhandedly said while taking notes. Hearing Gen take a deep breath before continuing to talk she nodded without looking up from her papers. Allowing for both his and Michael's rants to finish she suppressed a sigh before cutting in when it was clearly getting out of hand. Several things had come up during the impassioned exchange that she'd be discussing with Sadako. A fair few remarks seemed like they had layers to them that would need to be dissected in full later.
"That is quite enough, both of you. Once more: let's not insult each other. Additionally please refrain from making too many assumptions about each other in the heat of the moment."
She made sure to look each of them straight in the eye -or where those would be- to ensure they understood before she continued.
"Let's address everything that was brought up one by one shall we?"
Picking up her stack of papers she tapped the bottom down on her folder several times to straighten out the papers before beginning.
"I cannot offer any information on other students beyond that which is publicly available. You are aware of this, Kurokami. Attempting to use this impossibility to make a point insults not only my intelligence but your own as well. We both know you're not so ignorant as to be unaware of this." Needless to say Gen was far from the only person to have their actions looked at recently. Neither of the students he mentioned were ignored. Junsuina Kanjo had received additional sessions with Counselor Sadako and Ylva Riis was up to her ears in community service for her own actions. "Regardlessly this is not about them. Whether or not you choose to pay additional attention to the endeavors outside of this meeting, so long as it is done in an appropriate manner, is up to you. We are here to discuss your future and find a solution to the aforementioned problems."
While it was certainly a hero's duty to address perceived injustice a victim mentality would not benefit Gen in the long run. The tip of her pen tapped against her papers. "There is no such thing as bad publicity," she vocalized as if tasting the statement the way a critic tasted a fine wine. "There is truth to that. As with everything however there is nuance to it as well. When it comes to fame and name recognition there is certainly no such thing as bad publicity. Trustworthiness and reliability however require a specific kind of reputation. In the field there is no time to form an accurate estimate of someone. Pre-existing biases are what the majority of people will go off. Should you continue your current method innocents will die because of it." After all, to follow the instructions of a hero was one thing but many might hesitate when those same instructions are given by someone they perceive as a hazard. As both a pro hero and a doctor she'd seen the results of a moment's hesitation far more often than she'd have liked.
The very fact that bad publicity existed however put him on the radar and given that it was a single act -or several separate ones, if you wanted to put it less charitably- during an event with safety precautions meant that it could easily be turned into more positive fame. Had it been done purposefully Hebiru might even have been impressed but as it was it did not sit right with her. That he might be able to reap greater rewards than those who acted righteously, even under stress, ran counter to UAU's goals. Especially if involving Michael risked putting the promising student in a more secondary position. Her pen halted for a moment before she continued writing. That had given her an idea.
"Your suggestion will be taken into consideration, Faraday."
Hebiru wasn't quite willing to confirm nor deny that Gen's record could be absolved. Even if she had the authority to clear it entirely -which she did not- she wasn't sure it'd be a good idea. Moreso she was opposed to Michael going unrewarded for his efforts. She'd have to find an acceptable compromise; And on a similar note.
"What motivations either of you may have for striving to become a hero are secondary to how you will use your position. There is a certain popular saying that says the road to hell is paved in good intentions and while not completely accurate there is a core of truth to it. Intentions matter less than results. We are not here to criticize anyone's reasons. Our goal is to ensure everyone that enters UAU can become a successful Pro Hero capable of standing the test of time."
She waited for a moment to let her words sink in.
"Is there anything either of you wish to say before we move on to more practical measures?"

Every word became no more than fuel to a fire. Each attempt to empathize was a failure of the most dramatic of proportions. He chose to be here. He could’ve been anything he wanted and he was here. He could’ve had a cushy job anywhere and instead he chose to risk his life with this stupid Heroes and Villains crap? The revelation shook his head in irritation. However, as Gen liked to say, when people got annoyed, they got sloppy, and he was no different.[break][break]
His mask was slipping. It was shoddy work, really, to the point even this dumb mark was starting to get close to the truth. In an ironic twist, he was the one getting tilted, for once, and over the fucking Balloon Boy of all people! It was a blunder, and it only really dawned on him at the tail-end of his enemy’s plea. Michael didn’t know who he was talking to, or rather, Gen had failed to convey that. It was a wake-up call to just how badly he was losing control of this. [break][break]
“I’m not the one that needs-”[break][break]
The nurse then spoke up, breaking up the argument. Her timing was conveniently late, just after both sides had gotten their pieces in. Was this her plan all along? She sure got a lot of notes from that.[break][break]
She had a lot to say, and so did he, but with how badly he had lost his composure earlier, it was best not to dwell on differences in opinion. Letting things slide was the name of the game here. Even if it meant not commenting on the nurse being suspiciously in favor of throwing this basket case at Gen in hopes of “helping” him. Weaponizing Michael’s ability to annoy him. It was sick and twisted behavior from the faculty, but it wasn’t like he could talk. [break][break]
Once he took a step back and listened for a change, Gen found himself somehow agreeing with the nurse’s thoughts. Shocking, I know. Intentions were meaningless. Results were all that mattered. “Preaching to the choir there.” Swiveling his chair back to the front, those arrogant eyes of his shifted back to her, intently listening to her every word on the matter, raising his eyebrow at the school’s supposed stated goal. Again, Gen. Just let it slide. [break][break]
His patience would be rewarded, as once again, the nurse had to remind them of her authority over this conversation. She was the one setting up the pace here, even if it meant giving the floor to an idiot like him. Michael Faraday
Like Water off Rubber
Michael felt bad for his assumptions. He just struggled to understand what could be motivating Gen to behave the way he does. There had to be reasoning behind it. The school had to see there was something there too. They wanted to help him so that he could help others. It was the goal of any true hero to save everyone, not just who was easy or willing to be saved. Michael wanted to carry optimism that even villains could be rehabilitated and assisted out of their lives of crime and immoral views. Gen wasn't a villain but if this continued he could veer that way... but that was the assumptions that Gen was retorting against and that the doctor was attempting to dissuade.
As Dr. Yanai tried to contextualize and mitigate the perspectives and expectations of both sides but Gen couldn't help chiding out a remark at the end that didn't even make much sense to Michael. What was Gen implying by suggesting Michael be put in an inpatient facility? Was he calling him crazy? Either way it was more confusing than antagonistic and for the sake of moving things forward, Michael just let it go.
Ignoring Gen's comment, Michael asked the doctor: "So how shall we proceed?"
Notes & Tags: Kurokami Gen | Yanai Hebiru TLDR: Michael ignores Gen's comment to hear what the doctor suggests for moving forward.

The Doctor is In"For the third time, please refrain from insulting one another," Hebiru said tonelessly. She had been expecting petulance to some extent but wasn't prepared for Gen's closing statement to be a mere swipe at Michael. Perhaps he felt more cornered than she'd been expecting. Even more surprising was that he seemed to actually be listening. Not just letting her words go in one ear and out the other. Listening. It was rare that people changed their opinions when confronted with the facts. Usually such things only came after the fact and even then only if they wanted to. There was far more truth to the saying 'change comes from within' than the hollow nurse would have liked. She had little doubt that Gen was far from changing his mind but nevertheless the results appeared promising. Despite all her studies she never ceased to be surprised by how different people could act from her expectations. Whether she'd judged his actions correctly this time remained to be seen.
"Concrete solutions," Hebiru responded to Michael with a small nod. While it was likely best to let matter rest for a while prior to attempting to fix Gen's PR the needed set-up had to be started as quickly as possible. Which in this case meant ensuring Gen understood the risks associated with his current status. Not to mention it could serve a dual purpose. She refrained from casting a glance at Michael, her professionality making it easy to stop herself from making mistakes that would give anything away. There were several methods she had in mind that could serve as learning experiences to both of them. Tapping her pen against paper she settled on one that she believed held the most potential.
"Next week a preliminary exercise will be hosted to prepare students for the provisional license exam," Hebiru explained while making eye contact with each of them in turn. "The two of you will be attending it. Together."

And now we’re here. The place where all roads in U.A.U. lead. A practical exercise. That’s the kind of place this was. Any time you had an issue with someone, you’d settle it on the Field. It didn’t matter how ill-fitting a solution it was, violence was the number one solution around these parts. It was a simple one, one even the dumbest Hero-wannabe could under- wait, what was that at the end? She couldn't be serious. No, she wouldn't. “Wait, what do you mean 'together'?”[break][break]
“You mean we'll attend it together, but on opposite sides, right?”[break][break]
Surely, they wouldn’t be this twisted. He knew the school’s methods could be a bit out there, but this was taking the cake. Forcing him to cooperate with this nutjob? And forcing the latter to be at his mercy? It was such an outrageous idea that whoever proposed it had to qualify under some legal definition of insanity. There was no world where he could see this turning into a disaster.[break][break]
“Right?!?”[break][break]
That can't be right, can it?

Michael Faraday
Rubber and Glue
Michael listened to the doctor's assessment. Michael was concerned by just how much of this might be his own fault in the matter. Michael wanted Gen to be a good hero, but at this point it felt like he was resisting just in spite of Michael's presence and contribution. Fortunately it seemed Hebiru had an idea that Michael hoped would be able to help them both become better heroes.
Michael understood the proposal after a moment of thought. Gen on the other hand seemed to get it not long after... What started as approval for an opportunity to compete against Michael again quickly shifted as Gen finally understood the assignment. They would be in the exercise as a team. It made perfect sense. Finding balance and learning from each other's strengths while covering for their own weaknesses seemed like an apt way for the both of them to grow from the other's influence. If Gen wanted to succeed in this exercise he would need to compromise and work with Michael. And if Michael wanted to get through this he would need to be more flexible to Gen's position in such a challenge.
Michael understood just fine... but it still was a hard pill to swallow. Forced cooperation had its negatives too. Trusting if Gen would actually participate or having to active stand up against actions that Gen might try that Michael found reprehensible... This would be a difficult exercise, but possibly a needed one depending on what the two of them needed in order to be ready for the provisional license exam.
"She means for us to work together as a team." Michael clarified. "I'm willing to do all I can to make this work." This was possibly the only way Michael would be able to reach Gen and help him to be good and continue his pursuit to be a hero, so he'd give all he had in order to help him.
Notes & Tags: Kurokami Gen | Yanai Hebiru TLDR: Michael agrees to teaming up for the exercise in order to help Gen maybe become a better person and hero while also trying to learn from any of the good qualities Gen's style had.
