The Gorgon WatchesMaking a mental note of Rui's mention of living here Hebiru put the thought aside and used several appendages to maneuver towards Iphi and Yoko faster and help them evacuate. That was a whole web of implications that she had no time to unpack now.
There were far too many factors in play and quite frankly Hebiru had no idea what to do. Salvaging a connection to the Mummy would likely be her best bet at finding out more but she could not justify doing so right now, not with Yoko at risk nor with Recall relying on her to guard their backs.
Readying several more appendages to strike out at a moment's notice should the villains opposing them attempt to intervene with their retreat she took stock of Yoko's injuries while the girl hobbled over. The arrow-tipped limbs wriggled behind The Gorgon as she put herself on a hair trigger to retaliate to whatever offense may be thrown their way.
She did not have to wait for long. The very second the smoke grenade began to fly their way Hebiru's appendages moved to intercept it, more than a dozen heading its way. One managed to pierce it and send it further away from them before it could detonate and when it did she took far less damage than she'd been expecting. Ah, a smoke grenade. That was tricky. It could signify their retreat but it could just as likely hide their next attack. Fear of the unknown had long plagued humanity and Hebiru was no exception.
"Retreat in an orderly fashion. Leave the defense to us," The Gorgon calmly addressed Yoko while nodding in response to Iphigenia's information. In between the robot and herself they had things covered.
Luckily her caution was unneeded. The other side, whether due to pursuing their own interests or retreating as well, hadn't chosen to give chase.
Once they returned to the boat Hebiru quickly and efficiently took care of everyone's injuries, the mix of medical supplies she carried on her and the additional ones she'd stored on the boat ensuring a swift recovery.
The journey back home was silent, or at the very least it was on Hebiru's part. She stood utterly still by the railing gazing at nothing, her mind abuzz but no thought finding its logical conclusion. Fear was taking precedence, the fear that she might have lost her chance to get rid of this accursed quirk with their failure. The worst part was that no matter how much she rationalized it Hebiru couldn't quite discount the fact that her fears might just be true.

The Gorgon WatchesThis had all gone to hell in a handbasket. The information here might just be essential to fix what was wrong with her physique but there would be no use for it if they were dead. It was time to go.
"Mummy?!" The appearance of another possible solution broke Hebiru's composure enough that her voice raised unbidden. It was only the slightest bit but it would be a clear tell to any who knew her. Yanai Hebiru never raised her voice. It was said that everything was better in moderation and nowhere was that saying more apt then here. Two possible opportunities to fulfill her long-held wishes and circumstances meant she'd have to let both slip her by. Hebiru nearly swiped her data storage device off the table before managing to put it back into one of her hero outfit's hidden pockets. "I assure you I-" Ah, Rui Matsui had no interest in listening to reason. That was something she should have realized before she began her attempt but recriminations could wait for later.
"Wait," she began to say towards Eloise's fleeing back, so softly she doubted anyone but herself had heard it. She knew better than this. This was no time to pursue her personal interests, to maintain her reputation the safety of her companions had to come first. The long term was what mattered. There would be other opportunities.
"Oniki. Recall. Disen-"
For a second the power seemed to go out completely. When the lights blinked back on they were no longer the clinical white shade that was typical of laboratories. They were now red, blinked on and off and were accompanied by a loud siren. It did not take a genius to know what that meant. Ignoring the wail coming from the other side of the conflict Hebiru purposefully raised the volume of her voice to be heard.
"Oniki. Recall. Disengage at once and retreat."
Heading into the fray herself The Gorgon would assist them in whatever way they needed to make their escape.

The Gorgon WatchesHebiru's hands were a blur as she worked. Not a stone could be left unturned but she was more than aware that time was short. Haste made waste and so she prioritized things by order of importance. A PC full of encrypted data momentarily gave her trouble but luckily the needed passwords to gain access were on a post-it note behind the monitor. No matter how secure a facility was people were always its weakness. While she didn't have the time to wait for the files to load and read them here the access was more than enough to begin copying the data over to her storage devices.
Concern sat in the back of her head when she heard Recall's intel. The previous security team had significantly more than three members. That meant these were either elites, employees attempting to flee or more worryingly if the sounds they heard before in the distance weren't security protocols or automated data destruction, a different group of assailants. Any of those options could add chaos to an already volatile situation greatly increasing the risk they faced.
Browsing through files to judge the priority by which they should be transferred over Hebiru's hands stilled and she had to reread the same words thrice before they set in. There was someone that could remove and redistribute quirks.
Every single justification for her actions came after. The moment she saw that information she tunnel visioned hard. Surely she could trust the judgement of her allies? If they faced more than they could handle then either Recall or Oniki would have the wits to begin a retreat. She could afford to focus on this.
The mention wasn't enough, she had to find the files on whoever could do this. Copying over everything on the PC might work if they had enough time but without knowing specifically what and where it was the chances of them being able to break the encryption on everything anytime within the next decade would be small even if they succeeded. She still made sure to keep the file transfer going of course, with people like Iphigenia around there was always a chance it could be done quicker, but a more selective search was needed in the meantime.
Yes, she had to dig deeper. Searches for relevant terms and related keywords came and went but the results were either unrelated or answered with two words.
Access Denied.
A desperate frustration born by a lack of time caused her to navigate even faster, this time to look for a way to override or bypass the system. It was the kind of carelessness that came with being so close to your goal you could taste it. The moment where methodology falls away in favor of a hail mary to accomplish the task. Anyone with sufficient experience would know it rarely went well. Unfortunately such intense desperation was not something Hebiru was used to, her muted emotions making her rather inept at judging when they were finally influencing her usually logical behavior. When she found an option to disable security measures she didn't hesitate to press it before attempting to open the files she believed relevant once more.
In the distance a lock clicked open.
Access was still denied to her sending a spike of fear through Hebiru as realization set in. She hadn't undone the computer's security features. The ones she'd disabled were for the lab itself. This had gone too far, making a judgement call The Gorgon was about to call out to her allies to disengage from combat and retreat when something -or someone- came careening through a different entrance and nearly barreled into her.
Her appendages struck out in self-defense meeting several black-red limbs that seemed disturbingly similar to her own. For the second time in minutes Hebiru froze.
"Are you the being that takes quirks?" Hebiru asked unbidden and far too loud. She didn't receive an answer and her lapse of judgement meant she might never. For while she responded just in time to defend herself and fend off the creature the same could not be said for the surrounding area, including the PC that was now little more than a flattened pile of electronics.

The Doctor is In"You passed out during the class. Please rest assured it will not reflect badly on you. You were not the only one brought into the infirmary today."
Far from it. The super moves class had contributed but even so there was never a quiet day at UAU and no matter how many times she adjusted the standardized forms the student body found new creative ways to put themselves into a hospital bed.
"May I ask what move you were attempting to develop?" Hebiru asked while shining a pen light into his left eye and then his right to reconfirm that he hadn't taken any neurological damage. With her deadpan expression and lack of intonation it was difficult to tell whether what she found was satisfactory. "Please run me through as much of the class as you remember. Start at the beginning and go from there."
From what little she'd heard so far when Kei was brought into the infirmary Hebiru had several theories on what might have led to this, some more likely than others, but as a researcher she knew better than to draw conclusions with an incomplete set of data. No, the more she learned and analyzed first the more likely her assessment was to be accurate. As always her expression would give nothing away while Kei spoke but her mind was abuzz, slowly cataloging new info and making connections between everything that was said.

The Gorgon WatchesHad Hebiru had shoulder muscles to tense they would have visibly relaxed at Yoko’s answer but as it was her incredibly muted emotional reaction remained hidden to both herself and the two she was accompanied by. What mattered however is that it lent her the crucial clarity of mind to focus fully on the mission without being burdened by alternate worries. Given the possible contents of the facility that might just be the most important advantage she could have gained.
Offering a half nod to Iphi as acknowledgement for elaborating on her point she could only hope Yoko would do as they asked should the need arise.
---
Finger and arms moved in ever more complex patterns to precisely turn and angle The Gorgon's serpentine appendages. The sharp points struck shoulders, the inside of elbows and the back of knees to disarm and disable. It was precision at a scale she rarely got to use. Using her quirk in this way took her full focus, without her utter trust in the capabilities of Recall she wouldn't have been able to disregard defending herself entirely like this.
Unfortunately they were not the only ones with defensive capabilities. Several of their opponents carried riot shields and Hebiru would rather not risk misjudging how they were positioned behind them and accidentally hitting an artery instead of a joint. Weighing the risks she called out to Yoko, there was no need to risk a potentially lethal maneuver when there was an alternative.
"Oniki. Target the ones with shields. We will provide cover."
While she couldn't take them down Hebiru was more than capable of making sure their weapons couldn't get a bead on Yoko and were her own skills to prove insufficient she was sure Iphigenia would be able to compensate. Even so she kept a close eye on the situation. The preservation of life was crucial but if it was between one life or the other Hebiru would prioritize Yoko's over whichever assailant proved a threat without hesitation.
Once the security group was disabled it was time to continue on and before long they reached an area host to several desks with computers and equipment commonly used in chemical research. That and some other devices Hebiru preferred not to consider the function of until later. Hearing footsteps in the distance while she was pulling her scanner out of her pocket she turned to her two allies.
"This is critical evidence that we cannot risk being destroyed. Please cover me while I document it." Her aims here weren’t entirely selfless but they weren’t false either. If the information potentially found here was destroyed many of this group’s crimes might go unpunished, not to mention their potential victims unaided.

The Doctor is In"That sounds- Yea- That sounds about… about right?" Ageru responded to what she vaguely understood from Kei's mutters. She didn't completely hear what he said but it sounded like their thoughts on the matter might be similar. More importantly the focus she needed to devote to attempt to hear his words had pushed her panic to the side briefly, just long enough for her normal breathing to catch up.
Upon hearing Ylva’s warning Hebiru gestured for the students to clear a path. Ageru at the same time went stiff and tried to appear as calm as possible, the influx of more people causing her to tense slightly despite her efforts until they finally finished their brief check-up. One of the nurses exchanged a glance with Hebiru. The monitors here were likely linked to displays that had allowed them to see Ageru's increased heart rate so they could come to intervene and cut things short if needed. Hebiru received the message. They were permitted to continue for now but that privilege could be revoked at any moment.
It was likely only for Ageru's sake that they allowed it. The young woman had been insistent on doing this without a guardian or lawyer present.
"You knew they were coming right? Hehe," Ageru chuckled bitterly while looking at Ylva once the nurses had left. "Mom always did that trick too. She always smugly told us the weather in advance, even more smugly when we came back home wet without a jacket," she reminisced with a fond, pained smile.
"It was probably through the air that she could tell." Slowly in a motion that made it clear she meant no harm Ageru raised three fingers of her uncuffed hand in front of her chest. Atop one finger an uneven ice crystal formed, another had a flame no bigger than what a lighter could form and while the third did not show anything Ageru’s hair moved as if blown by a soft wind. "We never even figured out why I can make fire. No one else in our family can. It even took me a few years after the rest of my quirk awoke to make so much as a spark."
The ice crystal melted and the flame extinguished, a few drops of water on her fingertips being the only remaining evidence of her illegal quirk usage. One that Hebiru had been ready to stop if it proved necessary but had not otherwise interrupted. Her rant had barely concluded when Ylva's question came.
"Me? I've lived here my whole life. So did my dad. I think mom was from somewhere in Scandinavia? I don't remember. It's been a decade since we talked. Who knows, maybe she'll visit me in juvie?"
Even as she snorted sardonically her eyes widened slightly, something she'd forgotten about until now suddenly coming to mid again.
"Uh, Madam…"
"Yanai."
"Could you, uh, get that thing from the cabinet there for me?"
Given that anything that could be brought in here would have been cleared by both the hospital and the police alike Hebiru saw no issue with granting the request. The object in question proved to be an aged lockbox. One that rattled slightly as Hebiru brought it over to Ageru. What stood out however was the design. Hebiru herself would have no context for it but to the ones present in the bar the design might be familiar. After all, it was in the exact same style as the ornate key still in Gen's possession.

The Doctor is InHebiru had prepared to welcome several visitors into her infirmary as soon as the Super Moves class was proposed, a precaution that as per usual proved to be almost prophetic. It did not take a genius to figure out the pattern, especially not with the amount of data she had access to. Hero students were quite prone to injury when pushing their limits or engaging in heroics. It was only to be expected. If they were fully capable from the start there would be no need for a university to teach them. Even so Hebiru hadn't quite expected Kei to be amongst the students most heavily affected. She was still in the process of removing the most dangerous substances -ones that were usually sufficiently safe within locked cabinets- from the vicinity when he awoke.
"Are you alright, Hada-san?" She hoped he hadn't injured himself in the fall. That was a rather extreme reaction, one she made sure to make a mental note of while working towards a diagnosis. Rolling a wheeled cabinet closer and locking the wheels Hebiru knelt down in front of Kei. "Please remain from making sudden movements. How are you feeling?"
She carefully observed his reactions and body language as she talked. It was too early to draw conclusions but Hebiru had a few theories as to what occurred. "Can you stand?" She asked while gesturing towards the cabinet's handles to imply he could use them as handholds. While she lacked the strength to lift him from the floor she could catch him should he stumble and use her quirk to carry them both if need be. Regardless of whether he managed to stand by himself or whether she had to catch him Hebiru would direct him back to sit on the edge of the bed.
"Hada-san. Do you remember what happened?"

The Gorgon Watches"Is that so? My apologies for the discourtesy," Hebiru replied to Iphigenia's words. A blunder, and not the only one she'd made since Dream World. In between dealing with the results of that, her own instability and the piling workload she'd had less time than normal to devote to keeping up with various matters. Her knowledge of Wendy thus far was purely professional and the psychological side had slipped through the cracks entirely.
It took a moment for Hebiru to ponder how to answer Yoko's question, what she should share and what should remain confidential. Her judgement was far from perfect recently and oversharing was as much of a risk as under-informing.
"Overconfidence can be lethal. Keep your guard up until we are back in Tokyo, Oniki." Hebiru cautioned, specifically using Yoko's hero name to drive the point home. While she considered how to phrase the rest of her response Iphi smoothly took over. It surprised Hebiru to hear that Yoko had made contact with W.E.N- Wendy already. Holding her tongue she paid close attention to the conversation, another moment of consideration passing before she asked a question herself.
"Do you believe her to be a person?"
Had she possessed a normal physique there was a chance that she might have leaned forward in anticipation of Yoko's answer, the question having more importance than either of them realized. Letting out a breath she didn't know she was holding once her sister had answered -an act that remained entirely invisible due to her lack of centralized lungs- Hebiru continued.
"The reason I asked is because today's target is a hidden laboratory. One that may have connections to quirk research, bio-engineering or worst case scenario The Elementalist himself. What this means is that we may run into a mix of legitimate and illegitimate research that needs to be stopped and confiscated."
She left it unspoken for now that it was not entirely impossible the lab might contain less than complete artificial humans. Hebiru had no idea whether it would and would rather not risk having it skew Yoko's perspective if it turned out to be a false alarm. There were myriad reasons to create facilities away from prying eyes after all. Perhaps their caution was overblown.
It wasn't long after that they reached the entrance Iphigenia had been able to suss out, a squeaky clean supply bay that seemed both too pristine to be abandoned yet simultaneously too empty to be in use. An explosion in the distance brought her out of her contemplations. Had they been detected upon entry? They may need to hurry if so.
"Oniki. Should the forces arrayed against us be too dangerous to face I need you to flee instantly and call for aid. Swim as far as you can and return with assistance. Our lives may depend on your success."
A lie, of course. If circumstances escalated to the point that Recall and The Gorgon combined could not keep the situation under control it was unlikely they'd be able to survive long enough for reinforcements to arrive. It was their duty however to ensure the safety of the next generation. Yoko's survival was crucial.
Once they left the boat behind and passed through the supply bay to head into the facility proper they almost immediately ran into a squad of armed guards crossing a corner. The black-clad combatants raised their rifles and opened fire with stun rounds the second they entered line of sight.
"Recall."
Hebiru need not clarify. She knew Iphigenia would understand exactly what she meant. Manifesting several pointed appendages from her lower back she made a set of arm movements to have them strike out, curving them heavily so that they were nearly touching the walls while they headed towards the enemy.

The Doctor is In"A five. I see. Please refrain from speaking any further until the spines have been removed." Now close enough to identify the harmful objects Hebiru couldn't help but wonder how cactus spines had gotten lodged in the roof of her mouth. She would need to inquire into the subject just in case but for now that could wait. As her pager spoke with a clearer version of the voice that had just answered her before Hebiru gave a slight nod.
"Indeed. This will only take a moment, please hold still." Applying a low strength numbing spray to dampen the worst of the pain Hebiru employed tweezers to remove the pair of spines while she continued speaking. "Can my pager still receive messages from other sources while you are connected to it?" It was an important inquiry, for while this was certainly a convenient method of communication Hebiru could not afford to miss an emergency due to it. The consequences of that could be dire.
"A new invention? Very well. Do you require space to set it up?"

The Doctor is InThe full problem was one Hebiru had no way of tackling at present but as a doctor she was more than used to treating symptoms until a patient was fully prepared for the root cause to be addressed. She could only hope that her efforts would give them sufficient time to do so.
"Fear is the mind killer," Hebiru quoted while shaping her lips into a sardonic smile. The motion came easy, almost as if there were real feeling behind it. Had Hebiru's focus been more inward at the moment she might have found the reason for that but alas, her focus was on the student in front of her. "It is respectable of you to minimize the risk of harm to anyone else. As one who has taken the Hippocratic Oath it is certainly a sentiment I can understand. Always remember however: You never fight alone."
The motto of the Tranquil Soul hero agency was rather fitting for situations such as these.
"No hero has reached the greatest heights by themselves. Certainly, in the short time it has existed Hero Society has come far but it never started from zero. A foundation has always existed, it was merely repurposed and improved upon. Junsuina Kanjo. If you wish to see further then stand on the shoulders of the giants. Learn from the trail your predecessors have blazed and accept their assistance instead of attempting to reinvent the wheel."
Pausing for a moment so as to not overwhelm her Hebiru let her words hang for a while before continuing in a softer tone.
"Despite what it may look like, I do not believe your progress has stopped. In any endeavor the first eighty percent of results take twenty percent of the effort to achieve and the final twenty percent take eighty percent of it. You have arrived at this final twenty percent, Junsuina. The road to improvement shall be far harder from here but it will not be pointless. You may not notice your steady improvement as you go but once you have advanced far enough you can look behind you and realize, where once there were flaws and mistakes only you remain."
The advice smarted. Recent combat encounters had shown her that she herself had never gotten close to finishing this final twenty percent when it came to combat. No one could do everything and Hebiru had prioritized other pursuits. It is not a decision she regrets but nevertheless a realization that grates at times.
"Will you throw in the towel here, Mood Ring? There is no shame in quitting. If you choose to continue however know that we will do whatever we can to assist you. There are many with sufficient experience to mitigate harm. Trust that you can rely on others so that one day they may rely on you."
Hebiru's mind ran down the list of possible candidates, flagging several as potentially viable while discarding others. They would find a solution to Junsuina's problem together. Of that she had no doubt.

The Doctor is InJunsuina had dug her heels in. That was problematic. Getting through to her now would be difficult without resorting to harsher means. What a shame. Hebiru truly did not enjoy using those. Handing over a glass of water and some painkillers she decided to do so anyway.
"I see. Quirk advancements and the exploration of their limits are indeed important. Rest assured that despite your injury this has taken you one step closer to your goals." It did not take a genius to feel that the other shoe was about to drop. "That said a path can be cut short abruptly with even a single wrong move. Danger must be faced but whenever possible it must be minimized." She did not want to bury a second student this year. One was already too much. "I would highly recommend practicing with a suitable mentor and adequate safety equipment. Failing that I ask that you at least inform people of where you will be and employ the bracelet so that we can be quick to respond should anything go wrong. That said, I do understand and respect the drive to be self-sufficient."
Looking Junsuina right in the eye she concluded her injuction.
"So, if you decide not to take me up on these warnings, what do you want me to tell your family?"

The Doctor is InSome documents from the faculty room had been required to finalize an update to a medical record and unfortunately Shokuhou wasn't in today to fetch them. It wasn't much of a walk and given that it'd been a calm day so far today Hebiru reckoned nothing would explode in the short time she'd be gone. Besides, even if it did there were plenty of ways to contact her should she be needed back faster.
When she walked back in less than ten minutes later she was unfortunately entirely unsurprised to find someone injured and bleeding.
"Miss Eto," Hebiru began while putting her folders and coffee mug down on her desk. "Please use your fingers to reply. On a scale of one to ten, how much pain are you in?"
Grabbing her tools in the meantime she prepared to extract the organic needle-shaped objects that had gotten stuck in Etsuko's mouth. A torch light, tweezers, a vacuum bag to have them tested for poison at the lab and a numbing spray were all she brought for now before rolling her chair and a wheeled medical cabinet over so she could sit directly opposite of Etsuko.
"Tilt your head slightly back and say 'aaah'. If this hinders your breathing in any way or increases the pain please signal me with your hands."

The Doctor is In"And risk the NTA coming after me?" Denchi Ageru answered Gen's taunt with a hoarse chuckle. "I think they’re why my mom, Jusou Saku, was on the run all the time. Never even married my dad. Hah. Ain’t seen her in years, who even knows if she’s still alive?" She trailed off for a moment, reminiscing on something known only to her.
"It's fine, trust me," Ageru replied to Jun with a self-deprecating smile and a far off look in her eyes, "I get lashing out due to personal inadequacy."
Listening to Jun's next question Ageru's breath hitched for a moment. She masked the slip-up instantly by pretending to readjust how she was laying, a move that was made more out of muscle memory and habit than any attempts not to look weak in front of them in particular.
"I... think it was... an exchange. I can't say for certain but, something like that." It took her a moment to find the right words. "The liquid you saw. I think it was a catalyst. It changed a part of whoever was wishing into energy to alter reality." An exhale that was half sigh and half resignation left Ageru. "It didn't work at first. Only small things changed, things that didn't do anything by themselves. Numbers on the clock without time altering, muscle twitches forcing limbs to move without the strength to support them, pain abating without affecting injuries in the slightest worsening it so, so mu-"
A wheeze followed by a cough interrupted Ageru's increasingly deranged explanation as she clasped a hand to her mouth to stifle it. Hebiru was there with a glass of water within moments and after several sips Ageru continued speaking.
"Where it, mhmm, where it truly went wrong I think was when I made one wish in particular. Bills were racking up and we risked losing the bar. I wished for it to stay our home forever." An especially deep breath spaced out her sentences. "My sister, she'd fallen into the Dream before I made it. I didn't know. I didn't, I swear. It, the quirk, it... I think it linked them. The real world and the Dream. It put the bar in both. Or, not both but inbetween? I don't know. It changed things. So we could be in one- Wishes worked differently. The effects, they were-"
Once more Ageru's rant was interrupted, this time by a loud beep from her heart monitor that showed a sharp increase in her heart rate. One matched by the speed of her breath as air rasped past her teeth, hyperventilation taking its hold on her while she struggled to calm her breathing. Even as she wrestled for control to calm herself her eyes flicked from one member of the group to the other. She was in no state to talk until she'd calmed down but she could take more questions. There was a kind of zeal in her eyes rarely found outside of the most devoted of fanatics. A need for penitence that threatened to tear her apart out of contrition.

The Doctor is InOf all the things Junsuina could have learned corporate speak wasn't the one Hebiru had been hoping she'd employ here. That was a firm no if she'd ever heard one. Not the reply she'd been hoping for but it was certainly a clear one. They could work with that.
"I see. Would a different design be better? Perhaps something you are more used to?"
Perhaps not the right thing to say if Junsuina had a specific reason for attempting to remove her rings from the equation but once more one that could give another piece of the puzzle if that were truly the case. Furthermore if it wasn't then with some luck it would disperse anger in favor of thinking something over. A much more workable mindset.
Harping on and on about safety precautions would only cause Junsuina to be further reminded of her failure during training. Risking that once to figure out less obvious reasons for what happened was necessary but anything further would only lead to doubling down and create more risks in the long term. Giving Junsuina a moment to think Hebiru fetched paper, a clipboard and a pen before moving a chair over to the bedside.
"I understand that you are motivated to increase your capabilities as fast as possible. If you inform me what you are trying to accomplish I may be able to find a mentor, teacher or qualified aide to assist you in the process."
That was the carrot, of course. The stick would follow.
