With her confidence at an all time high Emi was participating in an extracurricular for department of heroes students: one on one sparring. Normally, this would be something she would avoid unless she absolutely had to, but with her eerily similar experiences during Elementals and Armor Wars, she was eager to develop her own skills so as not to be a burden. What better way than practicing with a partner? [break][break] Since it was optional the school didn't let you choose your partner instead being assigned someone randomly from the pool of participants. A great chance to meet someone new! Hopefully, they would be nice she could really use more friends especially with all of her roommates being as busy as they were. [break][break] In her PE clothes she entered the grounds waiting at the spot the professors told her. It was both nerve-wracking and exciting! [break][break]

Introductions

Michael's stomach churned harshly in anxiety. Michael was a bit of a pacifist, in that he knew as a potential hero there was always going to be the chance that he was going to HAVE to fight. Criminals, villains, even environmental situations. Fighting against non-living forces was easy, at least in the idea that he didn't have to hurt anyone, but there was a strong likelihood that he couldn't talk his way out of conflict. If a villain was endangering people, there would be scenarios where he would need to resort to violence for the greater good. But still it felt more like a lesser evil to him. Regardless of what circumstances, Michael needed to get better at fighting people...

Michael had studied a few fighting styles at the tutelage of his parents, but the only one that seemed to fit his morals and desire for minimal injury was Aikido. To his benefit, the martial art was actually well suited for his quirk as well. His rubbery balloon body allowed for flexible and durable holds and counters. Disarming and grappling were well suited to his life views and body-type, so he was quick to take up the form. Now he just needed more experience with it.

Michael had sparred with his parents before, but the underlying fear of causing someone harm during the practice still had him hold back enough that he frequently found himself losing and injured most of the time. He had signed up for a sparring partner through the school, hoping maybe he could learn more or at least develop more comfort in conflict by having friendly duels with his peers. At the very least, he could focus on avoidance techniques.

Michael arrived a few minutes later than he would have like to, wearing his gym clothing as he ran to the designated location. Michael's anxieties eased up when he found his sparring partner. This was the part he hadn't been dreading, introductions. Michael was a very social and empathetic sort of person, so making friends was normally simple for him. In spite of the red latex balloon he had for a face, Michael tended to have very obvious body language and a genuine warmth and light to him that helped him be understood.

"Hello Hall-san." Michael said in a bright friendly tone with a gentle wave as he got near. He was given the name of whom he'd be meeting, but he still wasn't fully sure; he just assumed it was her from the context of them being the only ones at this location. She appeared to be the pinnacle of a standard college woman aside from her European features. Her name had been more of an indication of her not being of Japan like a larger number of his classmates, but perhaps she was like himself. Michael was half Japanese and a Japanese citizen, but his father being English in nationality gave Michael his surname and his European attributes.

"I'm Michael, it's nice to meet you." Michael said happily as he extended a hand for Emilia to shake if she pleased.

Emi's nerves may have led to her being a bit earlier than expected, but fortunately, she wasn't waiting long. She was lightly pacing back and forth with a mix of nerves and excitement. After all, who wouldn't be a little anxious about meeting a stranger? The silence was broken as she was met with a greeting that startled her. She would turn around and, with a smile, begin to greet Michael as well. "Oh, hi! You can just call me Em-" ...was he wearing a costume? Did this person have a balloon for a head?? She stared for just long enough for it to be awkward until her face turned crimson, and she quickly course-corrected, "Y-You can just call me Emi! It's nice to meet you, Michael!" She hoped she didn't offend him too badly.[break][break] She would return his gesture in kind with a firm handshake making sure not to squeeze too hard. Sometimes, it was hard to gauge her own strength, and especially with how her quirk was improving since coming to the school, she couldn't be too careful. [break][break] Once the initial awkwardness Emi felt had worn off she would broach the topic of their meeting "Are you ready? I'm gonna be totally honest and say that I'm not the type to go all out in something like this. I've had...a bit of a streak of accidentally hurting my classmates." Michael seemed nice enough so ultimately she hoped that he wasn't the type to wanna go all out right from the start. [break][break]

Soft: Inside and Out

Michael smiled, or at least his body language read as such as he shook hands with her. Unfortunately, due to his rubbery anatomy, it wasn't exactly easy to gauge what was a firm handshake with Michael. Despite his father's instruction on proper handshaking, Michael was morally and physically soft, so he didn't have a particularly firm handshake for both those reasons. He would grip clearly in a handshake but never squeezed much in assuring he didn't cause harm. Truth be it, he was more of a hugger, but knew not to do that with strangers or without assuring it was okay first. Still, as rubber does, the tighter the squeeze on his hand the greater pressure was exerted back to the squeezer. In a way it was perfect as it not only reciprocated the firmness of the handshake of whomever he met but it also clearly expressed part of his power. The balloon head tended to be much more obvious for people after they understood his quirk.

"Emi." Michael said warmly in confirmation, ignoring the common awkwardness that Michael was use to upon first meetings.

When the moment had passed, the subject of sparring intensity was brought up. Michael was rather relieved by Emi's more passive approach towards practiced combat. She apparently didn't want to hurt others either. However it seemed Emi was more concerned of a very possible potential of harming others rather than Michael's general desire not to cause harm. That did cause a difficult handicap for sparring. Without putting in a more serious effort, there was always a chance of gaining nothing from the exercise or even harming yourself or others through unpracticed methods. Michael had found this as a problem while studying Aikido early on. Much of the practice involved amiable sparring partners, which meant many of the throws or disarming techniques might as well had been choreographed dances... pretty but not practical.

"That's fine. We don't need to do anything crazy, but I am much tougher than I look. In that I can take quite the beating." Michael chuckled softly. "So just go with what you feel comfortable with. We need to be prepared to go all out even if we don't do so against each other..." Michael very much hated the idea of going all out, even against villains. But he couldn't let himself stay afraid of his power or people could get hurt from his lack of control. This was the whole reason for him seeking a sparring partner after all... He'd need to get over his discomfort to put the safety of others first.

"As long as neither of us seek to go at each other lethally, I'm sure we will get the experience we need." Michael said taking off the track jacket from his PE clothing. Now in just his sweats and t-shirt, he stepped a decent starting distance away from Emi and took a stance ready to spar when she was.

Michael was thankfully her type of person! Calm and pleasant was a nice change of pace from the people she was normally used to. Well, aside from her roommates and Jun as they were "normal" in her eyes. UAU was a school full of big personalities and Emi, at times, felt like a fish out of water. [break][break] Her relief at Michael being kind was palpable even if he was a bit of a mystery with the balloon for a face; he was doing a fantastic job expressing himself. "Same could be said for me! My quirk makes me a lot tougher than I look!" she thought about sharing her discovery that she was bulletproof while on patrol but ultimately decided not too. "I'm more than up to a friendly spar. I'm gonna make the first move...if you don't mind of course" If Michael agreed she would take a fighting stance and activate her quirk surrounding herself in blue energy and increasing her weight nearly 3 times over. Bending her knees she would push off the ground and rush forward and swing at Michael's torso with a right hook. [break][break]

Bend and Snap

Michael was ready for the match, but her quirk did surprise him. The brilliant glow radiating energy off of Emi was beautiful, almost mesmerizing. Fortunately for him, her approach was slowed enough by her unapparent density change. Michael wasn't too sure what to expect if that punch she threw would connect and what more that intense glow had some ominous implications. Michael wasn't sure if he could even attempt any of his redirecting throws without injuring herself if that energy was more than bright.

Alright, avoidance then. Michael thought to himself. Clearly the tactic to follow for the time being would be dodging and outmaneuvering her as best he could until he could see an opening or assess any weaknesses. He would test the waters until he needed to solidify a plan of attack or active defense.

Bending backwards like a limbo master, Michael arched his body back under the punch thrown at his midsection. With as swift nearly pretzel-level twist at his hips, Michael snapping his leg out to try a fast jab of a kick to the back of Emi's left knee. He went for the natural bend of her knee to gauge not only how effective simple strikes would be against a point of leverage as well as having the strike be brief enough that he wouldn't seriously injure or strain himself. If he was able to make contact with her without harming himself he could look into grappling and submission holds in order to cause the least amount of harm or injury.

Even while sparring, Michael detested the idea of causing pain... so he had to push himself in order to perform as a proper sparring partner.

Emi hesitated for a moment as she approached Michael, perhaps the most difficult thing wasn't going to the fight itself but how to know where his attention was focused. She was used to sparring with other students who had facial features and in the last year was able to improve in part to reading someones face before they moved. There was nothing like that here.[break][break] She would whiff her first strike, easy caught off guard by not only how fast Michael was but how flexible he was too. If she tried to pull a maneuver like that she would have ended up flat on her back. She was a rather easy target for anyone quicker than her and it showed as Michael was able to bring her down to one knee.[break][break] She would whip around and was about to engage her gauntlets before making a timeout gesture with her hands "I should have asked, are you okay with me using my support gear?" she'd point to the clear gauntlets on each arm. IF he wasn't she would take a few extra seconds to put them away before resuming the fight. [break][break]

Michael felt a harsh churn in his stomach. His attack had been successful but while he could make contact with Emi she was truly slower for a reason. He had been lucky enough to use Emi's own momentum and anatomy against her as it had been like hitting a steel pipe when he struck her leg. Speed and flexibility would be his only great strengths when it came to facing her. There was a relief that flowed through him to know there was very little chance that he could hurt her with her quirk active like this. However, that did make his options in this spar rather limiting.

As she dropped down to a knee, Michael was already moving around and away from her knowing he'd need to put that distance between them. As he did so, he was caught off guard by her whipping around to use her gauntlets. Michael was unsure what they did, but to his fortune she simply signaled a timeout first. She asked if he was okay with her using her gear. Michael didn't have any kind of support equipment yet. He hadn't thought of what could be aptly used along side his quirk as whatever he wore or wielded needed to be just as flexible as he was or it would be more of a hinderance than assistance.

"That's fine with me. I don't have anything, but feel free to use whatever you like." Michael said with a warm friendly tone. He needed to train against anything he could in order to get to the competency he needed to be able to help everybody, so pushing himself against not only her quirk but the gear designed to supplement her weaknesses was all too necessary.

Michael bounced himself back and readied for whatever she planned to do with those gloves.

Regardless of whether Michael agreed or didn't she was glad to have asked. In a real simulation, she wouldn't have bothered to ask or honestly even against certain people. She didn't expect them to return the kindness, but Michael was more of a kindred spirit. Someone who clearly was only participating to learn how to protect others better rather than being the aggressor. The same exact motivation she had! [break][break] "Only if you're sure..." she saw that Michael had resumed a fighting stance and took one of her own, crouching and placing her right fist against her left palm, energy flaring up around her before condensing into the gauntlet. "20% should be a good start!" she gave Michael a nod before throwing a punch in his general direction generating wind pressure to strike him at a range. If his body really was made up of balloons this might work better than trying to fight him in close quarters![break][break]

Judging Air

Michael stood back and took on his stance again to be at the ready, wondering what exactly her gadgetry would bring to their spar. While he had the speed and agility to face her, if she had a way to catch up or clear the distance, Michael might have the severe challenge to face. This gauntlet of hers clearly had something going as he could see the energy convulsing around it.

When Emi gave Michael a nod, his whole body tensed up nervously. She didn't move from her place as she threw a punch in the air in his direction. Michael expected what was to come a moment too late. A pressurized air punch slammed into his chest as he attempted to bend out of the way. The impact wasn't dead on but enough to knock him back. A powerful gadget indeed. With that on, she'd be able to throw punches at a distance just as well as she could up close.

The blunt hit from the air cannon of a punch didn't hurt greatly against his rubbery body, but it wasn't something Michael could take lightly. Michael inflated himself slightly, elongating his torso and limbs slightly to stretch himself a bit thinner. If she was able to attack from a distance, than he would just need to dodge these. The biggest issue was this was pressurized wind, he wouldn't be able to see it. So he'd have to dodge off of two concepts alone. The first would be to keep his eyes on her fists. Timing and perception were the names of the game as he could easily manipulate his body to move him out of the line of trajectory that her punches were in line with. The geometry was nothing new for how he needed to calculate for his own limbs when stretching from his quirk, so he just needed to do it in reverse for her. Not exactly fool-proof, but that's where his second concept would be needed to carry the rest of the weight of avoiding her attacks.

Michael began circling Emi, keeping a close eye on her gauntlets, ready to dodge, twist and weave out of the way of any other punches she'd deliver.

The most difficult thing for Emi to deal with wasn't Michael's actions, but his lack of expressions. He had made it clear in conversations to overcompensate for his lack of facial features, yet the same couldn't be said about fighting him. Even as she silently cheered for landing a hit she was immediately met with another problem, she couldn't tell how effective it was. Heck, would air pressure even do much to someone with balloons for a body? Would it make things worse? [break][break] Even if this did effect Michael he bounced back (ha) pretty quickly, using his superior speed to circle her making it hard to aim. Emi would through another punch though this would miss as she couldn't keep up with him, and the frustration on her face was very telling. [break][break] She would take a deep breath and think back to some of the other lessons she had learned in the past, including a training session with a professor at the school. If she couldn't get faster she'd just need to slow her opponent down! Charging her gauntlets up to 40%, which was half of their maximum output she would swing downwards her weight keeping her grounded as the air pressure hit the ground and then spread out omnidirectional. Sure, it wasn't as strong as a straight-up hit, but it would hopefully give her an opening to close the gap! [break][break] tl;dr Emi swings again and misses[break] She ups the power and swings at the ground to send the strike in all directions, albeit weaker [break][break]

Riding the Wave

Emi's gauntlets were incredible. A perfect way to use her strength from a distance without it being excessive or easily countered. Michael luckily still had speed on his side allowing him to circle her quick enough to avoid another punch she threw at him. His first method of combating this gadget was working. That was until Emi deployed another way to attack. Blasting the air down so that it shot out around her in a full radial attack was brilliant. However this was when Michael's second method to avoid the attacks came into play.

As the wave of air pulsed out from Emi, Michael threw himself towards the young woman. However, rather than just hitting into the weaker wall of air, Michael spread himself out flatter with his slightly elongated body. As the air flowed towards him, he was actually lifted up and over the wall like surf board on a wave.

Michael was actually very adept at combating against air based attacks as his mother's quirk was gas generation and manipulation. Understanding aerodynamics was a necessity in being able to stand against her. So by riding the boundary layer of air created when the pressurized air pushed against the stationary air, Michael was actually pushed over the impending attack much like a fly being pushed out of the way of a hand trying to swat it.

Michael moved quickly as he was rolled over the wave of air and launched an arm at Emilia. He didn't attempt anything like a punch, going for the gauntleted arm she just punched with, looking to grab hold of her to slingshot himself at her. With her quirk he wouldn't be able to do much in the lines of harming her with a punch or a body slam even if he wanted to cause harm, but this would be his best chance to try coiling her up with his rubbery limbs in order to incapacitate her.

Emi was certain that after this exercise she would have to praise Michael for everything he was managing to do. She had been born with an "ideal quirk" and was just barely able to get it up to the level that got her into UAU, and yet Michael had a quirk that seemed much more difficult to use was fending her off pretty effortlessly.[break][break] Her awe at his technique ultimately cost her valuable time as when she shook herself out of it he had already passed the barrier she made. Even more unfortunate was that from the distance he had closed, her gauntlets wouldn't be as effective since they required a wind-up. [break][break] Even still this outcome could have been worse for Emi the gauntlets were designed with the intent on making things easier when dealing with opponents from a range, but if Michael was coming to her she didn't really need them. His superior maneuverability meant she had no way to repel him from the grapple but what she did have was the strength advantage. Pushing her quirk to the maximum she would flex all her muscles in an attempt to free herself and if that succeeded she would go on the offensive, gripping whatever part of Michael she could get her hand on and throw him as hard as she could away from her. [break][break] tl;dr Emi gets grabbed, flexes as hard as she can to break the hold and attempts to throw Michael away from her as hard as she could. [break][break]

Rubber Meets the Road

Michael's use of his quirk and knowledge of aerodynamics managed to serve him well as he had done exactly as planned. Stretching and swooping with and around the air flow to then coil himself around her. Everything had seemed to work flawlessly. Except for the fact that Emilia was SIGNIFICANTLY stronger than Michael was physically. Her quirk gave her the durability and raw power to easily break free of his grapple. She merely needed to flex out her quirk's strength in order to shrug off the long balloon man and then toss him away with ease.

Michael inflated himself back up as he was chucked away, allowing him to bounce rather that splat onto the ground. He bounded back to his feet and faced back towards his classmate. Unfortunately, even if he had the desire to attack more aggressively against Emi, there was next to nothing he could do against her. Even earlier he had only been able to gain an advantage with his attacks by using her own force against her. While possible to continue trying to manipulate her actions to benefit that tactic, attrition was the only truly viable resort and even then he wasn't certain that her movements could wear her down faster than his avoiding her attacks would tire him out.

The only option was to call it there and accept his defeat. This was meant to be a spar after all, so there wasn't that much gained from not being able to give her a proper challenge. She could do cardio exercises for the same training this would give. "Well I think that's about the best I'm capable of yet." Michael conceded rather shyly. He felt embarrassed to not be a better challenge for her sake, but also not being as strong as someone in their position as a UAU student likely should be. This would need to be a course correction for him to strive for moving forward.
