“Better to try than not.” Was all Nat could really offer to justify it. Yoko was right that teachers would help them out, but that didn’t sit well with her. She didn’t pay Yoko calling her a dumbass any mind either, but she did pause in her pulling to listen to the unexpected apology. She still thought some of it was her own fault, but it was nice that Yoko did recognize and own up to her own part of things. So with a hard to see smile, Nat gave a little nod and replied. “Appreciate it, Yoko.”
Then she gave another big tug with Yoko’s help, using her leverage against the rocks with one leg to push back as far away from the spot the chain was edged as she could. The grinding of stone on chain and the strain of the umbrella bending under the force made it a hard call on if the umbrella would break before they got free or not, but then with a crack the stone broke and the chain came free and without any time to celebrate the duo were falling down the rest of the hill once more… that Nat hadn’t expected, only really able to try and shield her head again and hope she didn’t break her phone or anything on the way down.
Maybe Yoko had a good reason for hating mountains after all? Yanai Yoko

‘‘I don’t know where you got all that can-do spirit from, but sure, whatever you say.’’ She gritted her teeth as she worked through the pain. Although calling what she did to help work would be generous considering how much of it Nat was carrying right now. ‘‘J-Just tell me what you need me to do!’’ Nat’s appreciation was quickly funneled and turned into her anger and frustrations so she would avoid looking like too much of a loser getting all emotional because her roommate said something nice about her. It was a sweet release when Nat’s herculean effort finally set them both free, but then it dawned on them, probably at the same time that they were going to fall the rest of the way. Another clumsy, painful and thankfully much shorter fall later and they were at the bottom. ‘‘Ow… Okay that sucked.’’ She groaned, laying face down in pebbles. ‘‘But we’re free.’’ She sat up putting a hand up to her head, still dizzy from the fall. When she tried to stand on her hurt foot she immediately collapsed again. ‘‘Ah shit, that isn’t happening, damn it!’’ She cursed as she clutched her foot. ‘‘There they are!’’ The familiar sound of footsteps and flashlights approached them as faculty finally honed in on them. At the end of the night they didn’t complete the exercise and would probably have to retake it at a later date. Yoko had a feeling they were going to get chewed out, so she played up her injury and kept talking over the teacher until they were let go and sent to the infirmary. Whatever came next, Yoko just hoped it didn’t involve more injury. nat
