he world was watching. That wasn't the fact tying knots in Farrin's gut, however. No, it had more to do with trusting these rebreathers to fulfill their purpose. Farrin could hold his breath for a fair amount of time, but not indefinitely, and this was an underwater challenge. 

"Yuh' better no' go short circuitin on me," he said, eyeing the device in his hands. 

It couldn't short-circuit, of course, but facts rarely loosened anxiety's grip alone. Surely, the device could fail somehow. He didn't have his beloved here to blast him with some healing warmth if things turned sideways. That said, UA's staff and other pros were on hand and ready to resuscitate anyone severely injured and such. That brought some comfort.

"Alright, firm that gut now, Farrin. Too many people watchin." 

Anxious wasn't a good look on him, even if there were only a few familiar faces about. Jun was among those participating in this round of the challenge, but this wasn't a team operation. Honestly, there was always a chance she just blew the cave systems open and retrieved all the stones she required. Still, it would be a large area to cover. That's where Farrin's advantage lay. He could cross the distance in a fraction of the time it would take the others. Here's hoping that would be enough. 

A few more seconds. That was all that remained before the bell rang and the contestants were to dive. Ugh, diving into dark depths- he didn't have the best track record in such matters, even if this experience was far more physical than what he was accustomed to. A friendly face would have been nice, but it was a luxury he didn't much have anymore. So, just him, the opposition, and the deep, dark depths it was.

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Like Farrin, Jun was nervous. She was nervous for different reasons, though. Despite her love of the ocean and boats and sailing and all the stuff she grew up learning about, of fishing and swimming and the like, she had never gone diving before. She was used to things *on* the water, and rarely under it. To make matters worse, she didn't know how her quirk would act underwater. The gems provided a lattice structure for the constructs to fill out, but once focus was gone from them they faded to dust. Were they waterproof? And then there was Farrin. Out of all the faces she saw, she recognized him right away. She couldn't tell, but he seemed nervous. This was a free for all match, but that got her thinking... No time for that now. The bell was sounded, and she had to dive. Taking a breathe, she rocked back momentarily as she focused on her anger. Her diving equipment was firmly in place, she just had to make it down as far as she could to get a leg up on all involved. Jumping forward, she'd take hold of the hammer rushing down into the deep blue water, bringing her as far down as possible before her own nervousness forced it to dissolve away. he bell rang, and everyone dove. Farrin watched as Jun sunk with that hammer, reaching depths far deeper than the rest. He could cover that distance before long. The golden glow of time flared in his eyes. Emerald sparks blew out from his periphery, his personal field fitting to the young time-turner. And into the black, he swam. 

Farrin was faster, stronger, and possessed more endurance than most, but that didn't shake fear's fingers from his throat. His arms reached and pushed, forcing him forward. A few heartbeats, and he was ahead most of the others. And there, beyond light's reach, he saw it. A vision all too familiar. He saw this place in sifting dreams, his nightmares. Not these exact waters, but the lightless embrace below all else. It was here he failed. Again and again, he failed to save her.



She was always out of reach. And he was out of time. A million voices roared in the back of his mind, imposed submission, but resistance was Farrin's language, his very spirit. But, like the light itself, it was eventually snuffed out. 

He's back in the real. He swore he saw her, that he was back in that place, but she was gone. Instead, there was a glimmer. Light. What little bypassed the depths reflected off of the gems below. He wasn't sure if he was the first to approach the cave system, but the odds were certainly in his favor. Swoop down, snatch the rarest-looking ones, and make for the surface. He could leave this watery hell behind him and tackle what he realized was his newest demon. He wouldn't be able to dive to such depths without thinking on those dreams, those failures. A weakness he could not tolerate in himself.

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Being this far down, a wave of uneasiness passed through her. She tapped the device on her wrist that everyone was given, something that would cause them to float to the surface immediately, but nothing more. She took a deep breath, turned around, and looked up. She had seen plenty of videos and the like of the ocean under the waves, but she never thought it would be this tranquil. The way the light played down here was...well, it was something else. The other students were still making their way down, and haste was important, but she couldn't help but take a moment to appreciate how things were. There was a job to do, though, and she turned to begin making her way further in. She noticed Farrin making swift progress, and she had to start collecting before it was too late. She turned, began to make her way into a cave, and almost immediately her rebreather got hooked on a small outcropping. This was something that made Jun freeze. Did her antics get her down faster than she anticipated? Did she just not notice the outcrop? Panic welled up within her, but not enough to make her flail. She felt along the tube, breathing in deep; at the very least, it wasn't restricted. After a moment or two, she managed to get herself free, slipping into the caves to begin her look around. Any crater-esque appearance she decided to give a wide berth, as any freezing (or potentially burning) liquids that came out of them could spell disaster. As she felt along one of them she discovered a small hidden cove that had a few gems in it. It wasn't enough to win outright, but it was enough to put her on the board! Farrin

he frigid dark chilled to the bone. It was the Arctic. It was space. It was ridiculously feckin' cold. And yet, no wintry waters would wrestle the time-turner into submission. She wasn't here. She wasn't drowning, which meant his Sada was safe out there somewhere still. And if that was true, there was nothing left that could deter Farrin's dive. 

Well, almost nothing. 

The water bubbled, and then a spurt of force blasted through the currents. The challenge's namesake geyser system was activated. Okay, this didn't deter Farrin, but it certainly slowed him down. He broke right and navigated around the first geyser stream, then beelined it below. A second blew out from his left and swept him back a few meters. They weren't strong enough to cause any meaningful damage, so no temporal warnings were flaring up, but they certainly slowed his progress. 

'Blisterin' feckin' shite,' he cursed mentally. 

Above, three students were closing the gap. No more time to waste. Another geyser blew out, but this time Farrin dove below the stream and put his back and arms into it. He swept down, crossed the threshold, and entered the cave system. Now, he had to play geologist and determine which would be the most valuable. Or just grab everything in sight.

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Initially, Jun was playing to win. But now that she was down here...did that really matter? She always had a love of the ocean, and she was doing something she never even considered doing. Sure, she'd pick up materials, but in this little cove she came across something she didn't expect: a fossil. She turned on the little headlight she had on her head, and looked it over. She didn't know much about fossils, but surely their significance was greater than the gems...right? She looked over the ones that were in the pile, and sifting through them with her hands she recognized a lot of quartz and quartz-related pieces. Huh. I think this is a trap...at least, a pitfall for people that don't know what they're looking for. She had a much better idea of what she was looking at due to the fact she had to use things like this for her quirk. With a shrug, she picked up a piece of amethyst and deposited the fossil in her pouch. In looking the gem over, she wondered if she could use her quirk down here...closing her eyes, she tapped into her hope in order to try and generate a light. To her surprise, she managed to create a small flashlight! This was good news, this meant she could create things underwater. But as she hefted it up, she noticed that it was defective; it wasn't as big as it could be, and it was like the framework to channel the emotional energy was incomplete. In mere moments, the construct began to dissolve and fade away. Huh. I guess that reinforces my fears that I'm not totally waterproof. I can make it work in the rain because there's greater air-to-water ratio that any gaps that happen can be filled with a little bit more material. Down here the material that's flaked off the stones just evaporates. I'm stuck making small stuff. That suited Jun just fine. She'd hold onto this gem, use it for light. She'd channel her emotions through it again, this time creating a smaller headlight she could hold in her hand. The light it gave off was eerie, purple in color as she looked back into the system, noticing how the cave turned down. Nothing ventured, she thought, progressing further in and down. Farrin

ption two it is. The cave system was glittering with gold. Well, not gold exactly, but it might as well have been. A thousand glinting lights dotted the cave-like stars in the night sky. There might not be anything to match a fossil's value, but the points would stack in Farrin's favor against most of the others if he could both collect the present gems and, therefore, deny the others its bounty. 

Farrin slammed on the temporal pedal and dove further into the cave. He pried a gem, maybe a ruby, from the ceiling. Then another, and another. Each was pocketed in a sack tied to Farrin's belt, which was quickly growing heavy. 

The cave thundered and shook. The stony guts of the earth grumbled, and between forming crevices, silt and pebbles spilled out into the cave, spreading with the current. Farrin turned, and there lay the source. A swirling sphere crashed into the mouth of the cave. Were the others trying to loosen the gems or trap him inside? The former wasn't a terrible idea, but they had to have seen him enter. The latter... outright recklessness at best. 

A scowl crept across Farrin's face. A turn of the wrist and he laid a field of temporal deceleration over the cave walls. A few holes in the field formed around the glimmering gems. That would hold back the damage for a time, but even his fields couldn't induce absolute stasis. Eventually, the place would cave in. 

'Faster, need ta' move faster,' he thought, scooping up more of the gems. Another crash of the swirling spheres against the cave. There would be damage elsewhere through the cave, but for now, he was safe from collapse. Another gem in the bag. Almost full.

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... The amethyst light was fading fast. Lights always wore out material faster, and the glowing gem in her other hand was quickly evaporating. That said, Jun was making some decent progress; she found a small cove of emeralds, some red and some green, a few more small fossils, and a pearl. Misshapen, but it was too interesting to pass up. There was a lot she left behind, but that was okay. Journey, not destination. The shaking in the caves caught her off guard; at first she thought it was an earthquake, but that would be too convenient. Someone had to be messing with the caves. Are you people crazy?! She thought to herself, scooping up a handful of gems and depositing all but two of them into her bag. She generated another weak light, moving into a connector as the light filtering in from the entrance started to fade; a cave-in. What was more, she wasn't alone. She held up the light, illuminating the person in front of her: none other than Farrin. At first she thought there might be a fight, but that was unlikely. She was much too chill, and he was a bit more nervous than normal. She looked back at the entrance, then at him, reaching up for her headlamp. Something she and her pals did during high school was learn Morse code; it would come in handy one day. She only hoped Farrin caught on. She'd flick the light on twice quickly followed by a slightly longer flash, space out the next character with three long flashes, and finish it up with a long flash, then short, then long. n truth, Farrin didn't know a lick of what Jun was saying. Morse Code was taken in more of the rescue-hero courses, and while Farrin would have to take those classes, he hadn't done so quite yet. He had, however, gotten the idea and replied with a thumbs up. The light Jun navigated the cave with had caught him off guard, but if it were a disruption tactic, she would have attacked or done something to impede his progress rather than try to communicate. Plus, he didn't know Morse code, but he recognized its use at least. 

After the thumbs up, he tightened the esoteric grasp he had on his fields, forcing them to glow a brighter hue of green. He wanted to Jun to see them. Any mistaken touch against the cave walls, where his fields were, and she would slow down too, which could be dangerous. The only spots his field hadn't touched were those marked by the gleaning shine of a gem. If she wanted to grab more, he wouldn't stop her, but he went back to work grabbing a few more before approaching her and pointing to the mouth of the cave. She didn't have to follow, but if she was here when his field dropped... again, it could be dangerous. There was the very real risk of a cave-in. 

With that, Farrin turned and began to swim back out. Another thunderous boom roared—more of those spheres. Whoever was whipping around these explosives, whatever form they took, he would challenge them to a sparring match later. Feckers had to know other students, even aside from Farrin and Jun, had entered the cave system by now.

She still struggled to understand his quirk, but she gathered he was roughly reinforcing the walls against whatever was going on outside. Good to know; navigating around geysers was bad enough, she didn't need a field of his contributing. As he went about his work, she went back to prospecting. There were a few more rare minerals down here, and she intended to get a few more big prizes. When he motioned towards the exit she shook her head, indicating a route further down. She was going to go digging for better prizes, and was going to go regardless. Farrin might notice her collection bag seemed light, and there was a good reason for that. Was it stupid, with the cave threatening collapse? More than likely. She was betting on there being another way out, and lacking that that the school would come and get her in short order. Her rebreather had a small oxygen tank to supplement the same breath she was using over and over, and she figured she had at least two hours. She wasn't concerned. Farrin,

he ol' forked road. Jun wasn't willing to vacate the hollows of the cave system quite yet. Farrin's bag was stuffed fat with gems and valuables. None like Jun's fossil collection, but surely enough to merit a high score. She was technically his competition, so leaving her behind was tactically sound, but it was wrong, and he knew it. 

A forked road, maybe, but his decision made itself. Farrin exited the cave. Then, he mustered a rather large deceleration field a few meters from its mouth. It was almost like a net, albeit one that ranged many, many meters in diameter. The next shots that flew for the cave were caught and slowed to a snail's pace. The inner field also remained intact, slowing the approaching collapse of the cave system, or at least the entrance he had used, for a while longer. 

Farrin wasn't going to dive further in with Jun. He didn't know fossils were involved, and with a full bag, just what could be gained? He would, however, safeguard the caves as best he could. The students above had loosed some rocks and gems with their blasts, simultaneously hindering anyone who entered. Now, their attacks would take longer to land, and the gems loosed from the caves would take longer to rise. 

When Jun did emerge, Farrin would loose his fields, allowing the system to collapse. The more fields, and the larger in size, the more swiftly his quirk tired him out. But, it wasn't as though this was a challenge that involved direct combat. There weren't any rules against impeding each other's progress, but there were no fisticuffs to be had under the sea. He just needed to hold back the stupidity so Jun could focus on retrieving any other valuables she felt she needed and avoiding the geysers below. Then, they could all get the hell out of the depths.

It was small, but she managed to find a diamond embedded in the walls; she wasn't even looking for it, she ran her fingers across the wall and it was there. She continued her search, finding a few more valuable things, including a small gold nugget (at least, what she perceived to be a nugget; it definitely wasn't pyrite as that collected in weird cube shapes). After scouring through the caves, and her bag a little heavier, she resurfaced through the connector, corkscrewing through the water past Farrin on her way out. For someone who dealt with anxiety on a daily basis, she seemed to be carefree of the situation. Including the collapsing caves. Regardless, once she was out and with Farrin behind her she'd begin her ascent. She'd have to look into diving certification. This was a much more enjoyable experience than she anticipated. Farrin
