THREE-LEGGED RACE, OBSTACLE COURSE

Unfortunately, in my efforts to research a few peers, I was now obligated to other events where I found no one of interest. There was no Kei to study nor Farrin to sabotage. And with my luck having bottomed out, I was forced to collaborate with a very off-putting woman. And with her slow, lethargic pace I knew I needn’t worry about our placement.

We’d pass. Barely.

Before us stood an obstacle course and to the side various people were spectating. I could single-handedly get us from one side to another. There were obvious pitfalls that were meant to stop us along the way, along with a giant clock to keep track of our time. But I had no interest in trying here. I’d reciprocate effort to help her get whatever results she was looking for but if left to my own devices, I’d gently walk through the obstacle course without a care in the world — who cares about a meaningless hero pageant?

The first obstacle was simple. It was a series of increasingly high walls. Fifteen feet. Twenty feet. Thirty feet. The whistle’s about to blow.

“I make bunnies.” I offer. “You?”

[attr="class","nikki109"]Whoever came up with this event deserved a punch. Ylva hated being a part of an exercise where you were entirely dependant on someone else especially a race. She did not enjoy running and frankly was rather slow, but what she did have was a way to slow everyone else down. It didn't matter how quickly you could move if your legs were frozen.[break][break]

Her partner was some boy. Some regular boy who didn't look anything like a player. Like always she didn't pay much attention to him or care what his whole deal was as long as he didn't hold her back. When he shared the basics of her quirk Ylva was honestly not even remotely curious about what he meant. Heck, he could be quirkless for all she cared. "I freeze." she added finishing her own stretches. Cramping up during this race would be the worst.[break][break]

The plan was obvious.

All the boons I offered were banes she threatened. While she was slow, at least compared to the likes of me — most people were — what was the difference between a mile per hour versus a hundred to an immobile target? With the nature of ice, and a few assumptions I made with the vagueness of her statement (not that mine was any less vague), I’d take a step back.

“Take the lead,” I offered. Even if she declined, it’d reveal something important about her later, something that wouldn’t escape eyes like mine. Every interaction was insight into a person. Sometimes it was a mask. But even the mask you wore said something of the person who dons it.

The whistle blew. The first act of one of the opposing teams was to create an oil spill. A few teams fell over and over again, showing the difference between the incompetent and the mildly competent. I wonder which I was grouped with.

She'd raise an eyebrow, confused about whether he was stupid or really stupid. "It's a three-legged race." she would say refusing to address anything further. He should be able to understand that his suggestion wasn't possible in the conventional sense, and even unconventionally, this didn't make sense. [break][break]

The whistle blew, and Ylva got to walking; nothing about this event stated that they couldn't attack anyone, and yet Ylva would do her best to use discretion. The oil spill was a perfect medium for her quirk, allowing her to get a few out of the competition early on. She would turn the oil spill into a sheet of ice, trapping anyone who was touching it with frozen oil. She would gesture with a finger for Rahul to follow taking slow deliberate steps on the ice as they would slowly make their way through.[break][break]

Sigh.

I could feel the pressure build across my forehead. Another reminder that some people struggled with subtext. I was unsure whether to blame UAU or the larger Japanese culture.. Fortunately, her actions spoke to the breadth of her understanding — if there was an advantage, she’d take it.

“This is exactly what I meant.” Now that she had counter-attacked and slowed down the rest of the teams, it was time to catch up to those who had stormed off at the sound of the whistle. It was a tale as old as time, and my Abuela wouldn’t believe which side I was on.

While I understand Ylva’s disposition, I had other plans. I summoned a small path of bunnies to run across — which would disperse into black smoke upon each step — which would guide us to a rabbit-toboggan to jump into. With the momentum and our weight, we’d be able to traverse the ice at real speeds.

“Can you make a ramp?”

The derision from the other students who were now trapped was ignored by Ylva. Anyone worth it could have avoided such an obvious trap; as soon as the oil spill happened, they should have left the area. She could have sniped them regardless, but they didn't know that which was part of the problem. [break][break]

"More or less. It's bumpy." She could make rudimentary constructs like ramps but they were largely flawed. When comparing her to someone like Jun it was night and day. Still since Rahul was being cooperative enough and more than that useful she did her part to create the ramp letting herself be taken along for the ride. They still weren't out in front but at this rate they weren't in last place...that was for the real losers covered in frozen oil.[break][break]

“Good enough.” A ramp was a ramp and any momentum we could carry upward would prove invaluable to us. If we could reach the first wall, then I could get us across the other two. But the flat surface proved impossible to grab and the distance from the ground to the top was greater than from one wall to the next. While one challenged our vertical movement, the other challenged the horizontal.

From toboggan to ladder to eventual bunny bridge, we were able to make it past the first walls. Our teamwork was shoddy but we were working together — better than I would have expected from our initial impressions. While there didn’t seem to be too much natural energy between us, our pragmatic approach to getting the job done worked. And unlike the others I’d run into, she hadn’t done anything to earn my sabotage.

In fact, of all the people I’ve worked with she seemed the most reasonable to work with… so far. There was always room for disappointment. And if anything would prove that, it’d end up being the next challenge…

“First of three down,” I looked at what lay ahead. “Is finishing good enough or do you want to win?”

As they took off on the toboggan, Ylva would focus her senses, trying to get an idea of how many teams were ahead of them. It would have been presumptuous to assume that no one could escape the trap that was set up and by the extra signatures she was getting she was correct. There were at least 3 teams ahead of them with one team in particular having a larger gap than the rest.[break][break]

They could probably catch up at the speed they were moving, and Rahul's attitude made it seem like he had more tricks up his sleeve. Good. Like Farrin in Capture the Flag, he valued efficiency more than anything; it was too bad there weren't more like-minded students like Rahul and Farrin. She thought the question he asked was ridiculous in its own way, but she's answered succinctly "Win. There's nothing more important."[break][break]

“If nothing’s more important,” I looked down at the next obstacle. A free fall. Climbing was one challenge and descending was another. At the bottom was next just above a pit of spikes. There were a handful of teams ahead of us but two were being escorted off the premises. They rolled off the nets with a bitter look. If we fall into the net, we’re eliminated. “We’ll win.”

Bunnies hold on to us as we jump off the ledge, a few dozen taking the lead as I spawn more, creating a trail for us to follow. If Ylva could turn oil into ice, then this should work, too.

“A slide.” The bunnies took shape, keeping note of her limitations — rudimentary structures only — and dissipated into smoke. While smoke was a result of an incomplete combustion, with hot gas likely interfering with the process, there should be water vapors to work with. “Focus on the moisture in the smoke!”

With how steep the angle was, we’d be able to gain massive momentum on our makeshift toboggan and pass up the next teams onto the final course. But they won’t let us pass without a fight… and if there’s anything I care more about winning, it’s ensuring the loss of others who dare to challenge me.

At least he had the right attitude. Having a useful quirk was one thing, but if you had a flimsy self-worth or overindulgence in your own power, you were doomed to fail. Just like Jun nearly getting herself killed during Dream World or Gen being much less effective without his quirk. She had adapted to Dark Shadow rather quickly, without any guidance from the original wielder, and expected others to do the same. Rahul had fallen into the same category as herself for now.[break][break]

She would give a subtle affirming nod. He had quickly picked up on the nuances of her quirk, another point in his favor. She had already begun to do so before he gave her an order. "I know." She would make a rudimentary slide; without it being reinforced, it meant they had a single shot to get down the ramp. As soon as they made contact, the pieces behind them would break apart, barely supporting their weight as they passed the next obstacle. [break][break]

Competence? How refreshing. And instead of biting back, she did what needed to be done. When people want to win, they really want to satiate their ego. She either truly cared about winning, for whatever reasons she may have, or she was like me — the results were more important than doing anything and everything independently. Teamwork was a skill and I was one of the best at it.

The teams ahead tried to stop us but with the ice that followed they found themselves buried and unable to stand. Everytime time they tried, they slipped. Finally, there was one team ahead of us. And a minefield.

The final obstacle forced everyone to slow down so others could catch up. Even with the work we’ve put in, the other teams weren’t giving up. While we’ve eliminated some and hindered others along the way, I had pushed myself pretty far. My skin was reddening and the cold wasn’t helping, either. But the minefield let me hit two birds with one stone…

Victory was not enough. I had sabotaged Farrin, but with newfound inspiration, I wanted to ruin the scores of the others in the race as well. Ylva’s performance coincided with my skill. And with my plan… I’d eliminate the rest of the competition.

Bunnies flooded.

I couldn’t move much anymore. I’d be on the same playing field as Ylva. But I didn’t need to move. A bunny went as far up as they could, using its senses and lightweight to avoid the traps. The others continued to search for them before settling on the field safely.

Then, we walked. A path had been cleared. At a glance with each I knew exactly where to step and where to avoid and could guide Ylva. All we needed was to wait for the teams behind to catch up. If they did, I’d activate all the mines in the front and the back, sending everyone except us flying backwards.

There were enough explosions to knock everyone out of commission (without grave injury but that was due to the structure of the race, not my kind heart) and let us cross the finish line as the only team to finish the race.

“We won,” I said. And better yet, they lost.

Ylva was as ruthless as most thought of her. If she had less morality, she would have made a very effective villain, and to certain people at UAU, she might as well have been one. This was exemplified by Ylva taking advantage of the plunge down the slide to snipe anyone with a snap freeze who tried to get back up, either freezing their legs in place or freezing them to the ground. They had such a headway that even with the freeze from the first obstacle having long melted, most of the groups were just getting through the first obstacle. [break][break]

Once Rahul began his plan to saturate the field with rabbits, Ylva refrained from freezing anything to watch. She had no reason to doubt that Rahul would do something to stop the teams ahead of them. Using her quirk in this way risked detonating the field minefield but luckily for her, Rahul had made a path and Ylva followed.[break][break]

When they had passed the obstacle and stood in front of victory, Ylva turned around the same time Rahul did. She would begin to form sheets of ice by freezing the moisture above the minefield, making flat discs that rained down over the field. The resulting combinations detonated all the mines, and Ylva would take steps to cross the finish line.[break][break]

There team had been dissolved and Ylva wouldn't respond to Rahul any further. She would take her points and then head towards the next arena - the dive into the water.[break][break]
