o, whatdya think the odds are dis’ thing is real?” Farrin asked, taking a large step over an overgrown and exposed tree root. There is a myth that during October nights, a fox spirit stalked the Senbonzakura Forest. The rumor predated quirks, so it had to be a myth, right? Apparently, it brought about people’s fears; some believed it messed with them, and others thought it was trying to help them overcome those fears. Either way, there was a massive ten million yen bounty on the thing. Farrin didn’t care much for extravagant wealth, but come on, if it was real, this could be easy money.

“I mean, if it was, someone woulda at least caught a picture er’ soemthin like that by now, right?”

A whisper. A scream? It couldn’t be both, but he certainly heard something like that. It was a familiar voice too, but he couldn’t quite place where from.

“Yuh hear that?” He asked.

Were these visions and experiences particular to each individual? Could they see and hear each other’s fears, if the effect was real at all, or did everyone experience the fox’s abilities in isolation? There was only one way to find out, and hopefully that way would see Farrin and Jo become rich overnight.

"Well, maybe there's a reason it doesn't wanna get caught. Trying to live its life in peace and it's just like really really good at hiding. Besides, I'm more about seeing it, whoever offering that much money is only gonna cough up like a fourth of it. Even then they'll probably say something like, you'll get paid over time and we can only pay a certain person who'll pay you because you're really young but TRUST ME you'll get the money... not speaking from experience."

She totally was speaking from experience however that didn't matter. All that mattered was that Windy was able to put these thoughts to rest considering this wasn't the first time that he had brought it up. Though the voice in the distance was heard not only by him but by her as well.

"Maybe it was just a tree? Either way, we have a heading let's go!"

 somber curtain fell over Farrin's face. "Well now I feel bad," he grumbled. "But then, if it was all 'bout mindin it's business, whys it playin' games wit' people's fears?" Yes, there we go. If the fox sought the peace of solitude, why haunt people on what is generally considered one of the "scariest" times of the year? That was a hunting pattern, which meant malicious intent. Unless, of course, it was trying to help people overcome their fears. Damn, now he felt bad again. 

"Well, I'm no expectin' we'll find anythin' anyway," he admitted. 

Farrin believed in provable science, not magic. Even in these crazy, quirked up times, there was an explanation behind everything. If anything, the existence and functionality of quirks only reinforced this worldview. Quirks followed rules. The offspring of those possessing quirks were more likely to have quirks of their own- often related to their parents. And quirks themselves were expressed through "quirk factors," cells that modified the human body in one way or another, granting it superhuman abilities. 

Farrin trekked further into the forest, still mulling over the possibilities. Another scream wailed through the woods, but it was without direction this time. Undoubtedly closer, but he couldn't pinpoint where from. Almost as if the sounds were triggered from several directions. "Maybe it's a person, someone usin' their quirk ta' mess wit' people around Halloween time?" He asked out loud, not really expecting an answer.  

It should have been a serious situation, but no two voices were exactly alike. The same scream couldn't be coming from multiple directions. Was this all just one grand prank?

"Well if that's the case we shoulda brought a talking dog and two others to really seal the deal. Actually now that I think about it have you ever even met a talking dog? I mean one time I had a dream me and a talking goat went to get pancakes in a park and went flying but I feel like that was one of those weird weird dreams."

Josie continued to follow Windy until the sound of the scream whisper came back once more and interrupted the flow of their walk.

"Why don't you speed speed, around the area real quick just to make sure it's not a prank, I doubt they'd be able to catch the surprise when you're moving along with the wind."

et's split up, gang," Farrin joked. Something was to be said about the crew always sending a stoner out with his pet dog amid a crime scene, but there was reason enough to remain engaged. While all the signs pointed toward mischief, there was always the chance danger was present. So, Farrin looked around and listened. 

"Yeah, that's n' option, but if der' is merit ta' all this, well... we might get split up, gang." 

Another shout. This one was closer and came from a singular direction as dictated by normal physics. Farrin ran his thumb against his forefinger, thoughts stirring, aiming for the perfect response, but there wasn't one. There was the chance, however small, that this was real and someone was in danger. 

"Right, I am gonna speed about, but I'll be keepin' it close," he warned, "Jus shout if yuh' need anythin'." 

With that, Farrin beamed off to the east. The air boomed as he crossed between trees, then zipped his way back and forth through the woods, slowly making his way back to Josie. Nothing yet. Not a soul in sight. No blood. No footprints he could make out. It was clear... so far.

"Oh, believe me, I will."

Josie spoke nonchalantly about the whole scream aloud if she needed anything. Being in the darkness wasn't a big deal to her, at this point in her life she had been alone in complete darkness more than she had been in crowds. Okay, maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration but the point was Josie was very used to dark and alone so it wasn't that shocking when after Windy left the whatever out there decided to not yell.

"There has to be some type of deal to this..."

It was then it hit her, it would be weird but it was worth a shot. Taking out her phone real quick she decided to turn it off, after that putting it back in her pocket. Having no other devices on herself maybe that was the key.

Maybe that yell was her at the theater telling the other folks to turn off their phone with a disapproving yelp.

aybe this mystery beastie was testing him, maybe it was toying with him, or maybe it didn't exist at all. Farrin leaned toward the lattermost possibility. The fact remained that he feared failure, but there was little some Yokai could do that his sifting nightmares hadn't. He was faced with a thousand dreadful realities every night and had been without any healing touch or aura for months now. Isolation, for those you cared for most to be so far from reach, was prison enough. What could some fox do? 

The young time-turner ran. And ran. And ran. Another shout drew him north. Then he zoomed back west. Games. Somewhere out there, a set of armor black as night and with a single evil eye watched. It was enough to garner Farrin's attention. He knew that armor.

"Okay then, I'll play along," he said flatly, then approached. 

But as he closed the distance, the armor faded into smoke and bled into the dark skies above. Or maybe it wasn't there, to begin with. Was that time-turned mind playing tricks on him? Just more questions. Always more questions. Regrets and grief rained over his mental garden on the regular and grew enough curiosities. He didn't need any more. He didn't need this. So, he shot back in Josie's direction. He'd find her, they could search for another minute or two, and then head back. Ten minutes spent running around the woods at night felt like ten hours in his mind. This curiosity would not kill the cat.

Standing in the darkness, Josie stayed quiet no longer having anything to say on the matter. It felt like both of them were out here for two different reasons. Whether or not they figured out about the fears didn't matter too much, to her, fears were just a reminder they were alive.

So turning off the phone wasn't enough?

Instead of using her quirk, Josie brushed off the ground and sat down on the mossy surface near a big dead tree. Another yelp went out, or maybe it was intended to be a scream. She couldn't really say for sure.

Ah well, if something didn't wanna be figured out the least they could do is be on its playing field.

irt was kicked up in Farrin's wake, but there was no fox to be found. Whether the rumors of the Yokai were true or not, the woods hadn't found much fun in playing with the time-turner. A few unkind taunts, a couple of reminders, and a swelling sense of anxiety were enough this night. The screaming stopped, and his father's armored visage was gone. 

"Hmm, all right then, keep yer' secrets," he mused. 

Farrin made one more loop through the deep woods, trailed a short stream, and then beamed around a boulder back in Josie's direction. When he eventually found her sitting on the ground, he shrugged in defeat. "Somethin' goin' on out 'ere, but I can't really say what. Not a soul in sight, foxy or human," he offered. "I'm guessin' yuh' haven't seen anythin' from not down there?" 

It was more rhetorical than not. If Josie found anything, she would have said so already, right? She definitely wouldn't be sitting around like that. Maybe the fun little game of hide and seek wasn't up her alley. Well, lucky for her, Farrin was just about done here.

"We could keep lookin 'round, but wit' nothin ta' go on, I can't help but feel like this is jus' someone's quirk at play. No real signs though, so how 'bout we jus' go n' grab somethin ta' eat then head back ta' campus?" 

If those screams had led to anything concrete, footprints, a blood stain, or drag marks, then he would stay. Life was precious, but the fact that the same exact sound had resonated from several directions just yelled supernatural trickery. Someone wanted them to stay. Maybe just wasting their time? Or, heck, the fox was toying with them. Either way, there didn't seem to be much to gain by staying.

Josie stared into the void of darkness.

For a while, there was nothing as Windy had said, though the Yelp had turned in her ears to something else different. The darkness in her own eyes twisted and turned at this point her eyes had become more than adjusted and she felt comfortable in the moment.

Who knows, maybe she wasn't looking at anything. It was all in her head and the darkness was twisting to provide a shape of something similar. Perhaps it was someone capable of peaking another's mind and pulling out something to make them uncomfortable? Either way, it didn't matter, because if the goal was to make her feel anything close to that emotion they had failed big time. Listening to Windy walk back up to her in the darkness she leaned back on the tree and blinked while thinking about the offer.

Sighing a bit, she nestled on the tree and kept staring out, she had put on bug spray before heading out here, the good stuff so she could waste some time out here. Besides its not like she had anywhere to be tonight.
