She sighed—this was going to be a mess. [break][break]
—[break][break]
It was 8:02 A.M., metropolitan Tokyo, some half dozen blocks from Shinjuku Station, and it was crowded. The body had been here since nighttime, that’s all she knew. She got the call and was on her way within minutes. The body was huge—the man had the quirk of a rhino, clearly, so it was all the more surprising it took this long for anyone to notice and bother calling the police.[break][break]
Perhaps it was because he was so heavy that the body wasn’t even hidden all that well. Left near a dumpster, not even thrown in. He must have weighed hundreds, perhaps over a thousand pounds, so she couldn’t blame whoever killed him for not doing the dirty work. Behind her, voices started to build and mix together.[break][break]
“God damnit,” she muttered, waving over a uniformed officer. “Why aren’t you guys keeping the lookers at bay? Idiot.” Just as she finished berating him, a bystander ran underneath the police tape and snapped a photo of the body before being grabbed by two officers. Detective Ko sighed and turned away from the crowd. It was much easier to deal with the dead body than all of these people.[break][break]
She knelt down and studied the rhino’s face. The officers had already found his identification: Niju Hon. There weren’t many people with rhino quirks, and apparently this one was somewhat famous. But right now, she was noticing something more curious. She pulled out her recording device—old school, but she preferred it.[break][break]
“Blunt force trauma around the neck and head. Rest of the body seemingly unharmed. Will have to wait for M.E. to confirm. Most likely dead for at least 3 hours, based on bruising. Initial cause of death is—” she paused, kneeling closer to Niju’s very dead, yet very expressive face. “Victim’s mouth is open. Foreign substance seems to be present.”[break][break]
She stood up quickly and backed away from the body. “Hey, you!” she pointed at the nearest uniform. “Take a sample of what’s in his mouth.”[break][break]
“Why?” the officer asked.[break][break]
“It’s poison.”[break][break]
After putting on gloves and a mask, he ran off to follow her orders. It would be crucial to run the tests, but Detective Ko already knew enough. This wasn’t just poison, it was venom. Someone’s quirk had made its way into this rhino, and he had died. All she had to do was figure out exactly who did it, and why.[break][break]
She paced around the scene, talking briefly with the officers, gathering information. All the while, she began to notice the commotion building around the scene. This wasn’t normally the hub of the city, but once people heard of a murder, they decided to see it for themselves. Perhaps they thought of themselves as detectives, or maybe one of them did it.

''Overcast is always such a bummer.'' She sighed, longing for clear skies and sunny days. Those were the best days to spread her wings and fly around Tokyo. She stopped and looked at the crowd of people for a moment. On one hand it was lucky, because that probably meant the immediate danger had passed, but on the other, that also meant whoever was behind this murder was still on the loose. ''Looks like the crime scene is attracting a lot of prying eyes. ~ What do you think, Tiburón? The perpetrator could still be out there somewhere.'' The question was, had they made their escape already or were they hiding in plain sight? And what was the motive? There was too many loose ends. ''Let's go take a closer look and see what they've found out so far.''Taking out her hero license she showed it to the police to be led into the crime scene, offering Detective Ko a little wave and a smile as they walked up to the crime scene proper. ''Morning! I'm Phantasmagoria, this is Tiburón, we're pro heroes from the Maxima Hero Agency.'' She held up her license one more time, just to be safe! ''We were patrolling the area when the body was discovered.'' She glanced down at the body for a moment. Best case scenario, this was just some kind of freak accident. ''Could you fill us in on what you know so far?'' The victim wasn't just a civilian, but someone with a rhino type quirk. For someone like that to go in the middle of the night, it had to be foul play. ''Do you think this is connected to something bigger?''gamelizardnarrator, Mar

Mar didn't mind overcast as much as Lucille did, but she reached out to offer her a sympathetic little pat on the back all the same. She couldn't fly so she didn't know what it was like not being able to, but she tried to imagine it as being like if she couldn't swim for some weather related reason. That would certainly be a bummer.
More importantly she turned her attention to glancing around at the nearby 'prying eyes'. She considered not-quite-metaphorically following her nose by using her ability to sense electric fields, but unless there was some extreme electrical activity going on it wouldn't really tell her much. It wasn't like it gave her a map and she couldn't precisely tell if a blip was a person or a computer or something without confirming it for herself. It just kind of gave her a general sense of distance relative to herself and an idea of how big a blip it was the closer she got to it. Although she doubted she'd detect anything extremely noteworthy, at least there was potential merit in confirming the absence of major electrical activity too. So with a sigh and focusing on Lucille again she nodded in agreement. "Could be, Phantasmagoria, could be."
Flashing her own hero license alongside Lucille, Mar didn't bother to introduce herself and let Lucille handle it. She did give a little raise of her hand in greeting, though. She wasn't trying to be rude or anything, she just needed to conserve her energy for when she needed it most. Which in a situation like this could be at any moment. She did add one question to the end of the list of ones Lucille gave though: "Anything strange that stands out, even if it doesn't seem related?" gamelizardnarrator, Lucille Arbogast,

Detective Ko sighed, loudly. If this crime scene wasn’t colorful enough already, she had some newcomers arrive. Not just walking or running, but flying. This elicited some chatter from the crowd, which was already too excited for Detective Ko’s liking. [break][break]
“Great, heroes. Two of you,” she muttered, seeing a couple of licenses held up to her face. She didn’t smile, but this was hardly strange for her. The both of them were immediately quite curious about the scene.[break][break]
Detective Ko sighed again, though this time she took a moment to study the two of them. “I can certainly tell you the facts. Whether or not it’s connected to something else…I usually save those ideas for later.” She led the two of them to a good vantage point of the body, stopping before they got too close. “The victim’s name is Niju Hon. Thirty-six years old, rhinoceros quirk, occupation was some sort of speaker at an organization called FreeQuirk. He had just finished a presentation last night a few blocks over when this happened.” She took a step forward and pointed at the rhino’s head. “Initially it seemed like his death was from brute force—bruising around the neck, odd position on the street, but there’s something more. Poison—venom, perhaps—around the victim’s mouth. We’re getting it tested, but it appears as though-”[break][break]
“Detective!” yelled a running uniformed officer. “We got the results back. There’s something called a conotoxin present. I don’t know what that is, but-”[break][break]
“I don’t need the chemistry. I assume you got something else though?” Detective Ko replied with a raised eyebrow. “Perhaps the name of someone connected to this venom?”[break][break]
“Oh, right!” he replied. “It’s a man named…” he swiped across his phone quickly. “Ah, it’s Geo Koji. Apparently his quirk is a mutant type, and he can produce this venom.”[break][break]
“I see,” Detective Ko said. “Send me his information. And while you’re here, any updates on eyewitnesses?”[break][break]
“No eyewitnesses,” the officer replied. “But there is an earwitness!” He paused and waited for Detective Ko to laugh, but this was a futile effort. Eventually, he slumped his shoulders and continue speaking. “There’s a woman saying she heard some strange voices at night. Two of our guys are taking her statement right now over there.”[break][break]
Detective Ko nodded and the officer scurried off. She closed her eyes for a moment and took in a deep breath. She turned back to the heroes, her expression as dreary as the clouds overhead. “So, heroes, what do you think we should do next?”

From the way Detective Ko was acting it appeared to have been a long morning for her. Dead body, some terrible villain possibly still at large, what an awful way to start the day. Lucille listened quietly as the detective explained everything to them, inspecting his head as she pointed it out... Poison? She looked at Niju's mouth and already theories were forming in her head. FreeQuirk? She vaguely remembered the name, but she couldn't say she had interacted with the organization in a personal capacity. Did they have any enemies? She was about to ask Detective Ko when an officer came running over. When the name Geo Koji was said she looked up at Mar for confirmation, as if to silently ask whether the name was familiar to her or not. This case was progressing fast. Standing back up straight, Lucille started from the top. ''You said Niju Hon was speaking at FreeQuirk. Do you think this could have ties back to the organization?'' She looked over at Mar, inviting her into the conversation in case she wanted to ask any questions of her own. ''I would start by looking into Geo Koji, is there anymore information on him? If he's at home when we go check on him we want to make sure we're prepared, but this still leaves us with a lot of possible outcomes.'' She held up a finger. ''One. Geo Koji got in a fight with Niju and accidentally poisoned him. Two. Geo Koji did it on purpose and was targeting Niju, or FreeQuirk. Three. Geo Koji is being framed and someone else extracted his venom.'' She gave a little shrug. ''Either way, Geo Koji is our biggest lead.''gamelizardnarrator, Mar

Mar didn't let the comment bother her. She knew what it was like to be tired on the job, and some heroes were showboaters or not as good at much that wasn't punching people hard yet tried to get involved in things that were over their heads. She'd never been a showboater and she knew her limits, but back when she was a rookie she had her fair share of accidentally causing more work for other people when she didn't mean to. Lucille didn't seem to mind it either, so there was no real reason to dwell on it at all. Instead, she tried to recall if she had ever heard of FreeQuirk or the other names being mentioned before.
The glance Lucille gave her was met with a slight shake of her head to indicate that no, she hadn't heard of Geo Koji before. Listening to Lucille's guesses, tail lightly thumping at the ground beside her as she thought, Mar eventually nodded in agreement. "Yeah, that's our best bet. Before we do though, any idea what caused the neck trauma or any other injuries? Ropes, hands, that kind of thing?"
She was guessing the victim had been strangled and the poison was forced into their mouth, but she didn't want to fall into the trap of trying to guess what happened without more evidence. So many different things could have happened that it was better to figure out what didn't happen first, at least to her. gamelizardnarrator, Lucille Arbogast,

Detective Ko’s expression softened, but only for a moment. “Those are fine suggestions, Phantasmagoria. From what I’m seeing,” she says, flipping through the information that was sent to her, “it seems he’s at work in a lab not too far from here. Some kind of scientist.” She narrowed her eyes as she studied what was written about him. “And Tiburón, as for what caused the neck trauma, rope is out of the question—no burns, but other than that, our best bet is something strong. Not quite enough to snap the neck, but—well, a rhino is a tough beast.”[break][break]
This was quite the dilemma. The heroes were different than she thought they’d be—more cautious. Still, they were intent on seeing Geo Koji. She didn’t blame them. After all, he was perhaps the most interesting piece in this puzzle. Still, she couldn’t help but feel…[break][break]
“As much as I would like to go see what this Geo Koji has to say,” her eyes flicked over to the witness. It was probably fruitless, and perhaps she was wasting time, but the doubt lingered. “Let’s go see what this woman heard.”[break][break]
Detective Ko walked briskly over to the witness who was being interviewed. She was diminutive, but her eyes were sharp and her voice was clear. [break][break]
“...And I didn’t know what to make of it, but I was too frightened to go close.”[break][break]
The detective writing this down nodded as he jotted down in his notebook. Detective Ko put her hand on his shoulder and glanced over his notes. “Suki,” she said to the witness, “Can you repeat for the heroes and I what you heard? I’d like to hear it exactly as it played out.”[break][break]
Suki paused, looked at the heroes, and nodded. “Well, the main thing I heard was a voice, rushed but not quite a yell—and the person was saying ‘I have to! I have to!’. Soon after that, there was silence, and I didn’t stick around much longer.”[break][break]
Detective Ko nodded, absorbing the words. “Thank you.” She turned to the heroes, knowing that if they had questions, they would pose them to the woman. Detective Ko had ideas of her own, but when it came to interviewing witnesses, she wasn’t always the best person to speak to at first. After all, interviewing a witness was a delicate act, and she was anything but delicate.

''A scientist, huh?'' She nodded her head putting a hand up to her chin. She could really feel that she hadn't gotten her morning coffee yet as her brain was still booting up. ''Indeed, if this was anyone else it would be a different case, but this is a big mutation type power.'' She looked at Mar, before flashing a thumbs up and a wink at Detective Ko, ''let's go hear her out.''She smiled reassuringly at Suki, offering her a hand to hold while she told her witness account. No matter if she took it or not, Lucille just wanted to make sure she felt safe in their presence. ''Suki you are doing a fantastic job helping our investigation, do you recall what type of voice it was? You said it was rushed, but were you able to make out anything else? Did it sound rough or soft, did it sound masculine or feminine?'' She wanted to ask about what was said too. 'I have to'? Have to what? She was hesitant to ask since she didn't want to bombard the poor woman with questions. Besides, Mar probably had something she wanted to ask too, and she wasn't going to not let her partner talk. While she remained quiet to let Mar speak, Lucille looked over at Detective Ko and smiled, not because she was having fun or anything. It was the type of smile that communicated that everything was going to be okay. That they were going to solve what was going on and apprehend Geo Koji, assuming he really was their culprit. ''Tiburón, just to make sure, you haven't picked up anything yet, have you?'' She was referring to Mar's ability to sense electrical fields. Since she hadn't said anything it was safe to say they could clear any suspicions on that front, but she still made sure to ask. gamelizardnarrator, Mar

No rope burns, and presumably no other definitive kinds of prints that things like fingers would leave... Something strong but not strong enough? Mar was focused on the neck damage part of the puzzle. Thumping her tail against the ground in thought, she was leaning more and more towards it being either some kind of Quirk appendage that had done it, like vines or tentacles or something, or a similar piece of technology. The glance from Lucille pulled her out of her thoughts and she gave a little nod as they went to listen to what the witness, Suki, had to say. It didn't really help much, but it did paint some kind of a picture in Mar's head - either the killer or the victim had been determined to do something during the encounter. Maybe the murder was committed under duress for some reason, a hostage situation or to prevent the victim from doing something? She couldn't discount that possibility, so she made a mental note to try and avoid immediately jumping the culprit once they found them if she could avoid it.
She didn't think it'd justify a murder, but if there was some true mastermind at work then the bulk of the punishment should be directed at them and not at someone stuck doing dirty work.
Lucille's questions were the ones she was actually going to ask if nobody else did, so Mar just added onto it to try and help the witness out: "How did they talk, too? Closer to how I do, or to how she sounds?" Her own voice was on the deeper, deadpan side - a consequence of always being low on energy - and it was no secret that Lucille's was full of energy as a sharp contrast. It wouldn't be too much to go on even with an answer, but every piece helped get them closer to figuring this out. Letting Suki think about and give her answer, Mar gave a shake of her head at Lucille's question with another sigh. "No more than the usual, but I'll keep my 'nose' on it."
She would too, fully intending to keep her sense for electrical fields in her attention just to make sure something big or strange didn't get the jump on them. It'd come in handy in a potential chase as well, if she was managed to identify which field belonged to a fleeing suspect before they could get away from them. She hoped it didn't come to that though, chases tired her out more than anything... but she didn't get to pick and choose what was required in the name of duty. gamelizardnarrator, Lucille Arbogast,

Detective Ko’s remained stoic as Phantasmagoria gave her a thumbs up. After all, it wasn’t her that the hero needed to get along with. She crossed her arms and watched how the two of them handled the interrogation.[break][break]
Suki smiled faintly at the hero, who assured her and asked a gentle question. Suki paused, her eyebrows tensing and her lips pursing.[break][break]
“I—the voice I heard was desperate. It was…” she trailed off, her eyes wandering. Eventually, they landed back on Phantasmagoria, and Suki breathed in deeply. “I suppose it sounded soft. Even though it was loud enough for me, it was soft. And I heard a voice in reply, much quieter and deeper, but I couldn’t make out what they said. I’m sorry I didn’t mention it earlier, it’s just quite a lot.” Suki breathed in, listening to the other hero, Tiburon. “I would say it sounds more like her voice,” she said, pointing at Phantasmagoria.[break][break]
Detective Ko, arms crossed, walked up. “Thank you Suki. We appreciate your help.” She tried summoning a friendly face, but it wasn’t her strong suit, so she quickly moved on. “Heroes. I think we’ve heard enough, haven’t you? If there’s nothing else you’d like to check at the scene…” she turned swiftly, her eyes lit up. “Officer, the heroes and I are off to see a suspect. Send me any updates!” [break][break]
The same officer looked up, startled. “Understood!” he said with a salute. Detective Ko scoffed. She had told him dozens of times she didn’t like saluting.[break][break]
“Okay, let’s go see this Geo Koji. I saw you were able to cover ground pretty quickly with your wings. If you want to make good time, we can take that route. Either way, shouldn’t be long.”[break][break]
Detective Ko, feeling a seed of uncertainty, looked back at the scene. There were several ideas forming and disappearing in her mind—a sign of a good case. However, it still left her with a pit of anxiety, and she could only hope these heroes would help. Was she missing something, or…? [break][break]
(Either by flight or by feet, the three arrive at Geo Koji’s lab)[break][break]
It was a clean building. Not without its fair share of paintings and geometric designs, but absolutely spotless. The intern at the front gave Detective Ko easy directions to the lab, and after two rights and a left, she knocked on the door of a Doctor Geo Koji.[break][break]
A few moments later, the door slowly opened, and she was faced with a distinct man. In this world, there weren’t many who weren’t distinct in one way or another, but still. His whole body was wrapped in a shell, and his face popped out like a snail’s might. Ah, that’s right, his quirk was—[break][break]
“Visitors!” the man yelled. “I apologize for my appearance. It’s usually quite a shock to people, but I have the quirk of what’s called a cone snail. Luckily not fully.” He waved his arms around, which were as dexterous as any humans.[break][break]
Detective Ko held up her badge. “Geo Koji?”[break][break]
He stepped back, his expression akin to that of shock on a non-snail face. “A Detective? Fascinating. And I see two heroes!” He clasped his hands together while showing a meager smile. “Come in! I mean, if that’s what you want. I don’t mean to—”[break][break]
“Yes, we will.” Detective Ko stepped forward into the lab. Pristine, bright, and not too crowded. There were only a few other people working here. Mostly animals, Detective Ko noted. A gorilla, some sort of reptile, and a woman with some sort of metal covering parts of her body. All quirks, all seemingly constantly active.[break][break]
“Ah, don’t worry about them,” Geo said. “Anyway, what is this all about?”[break][break]
Detective Ko preferred it this way. She wanted to observe. However, she couldn’t help but get the first word in to set the tone. “A man has died, and your venom killed him.”[break][break]
The look on Geo Koji’s face, his speechless response, as though waiting for any explanation. Detective Ko looked at the heroes. Their turn.

A desperate voice, one voice deeper than the other, it was safe to assume the victim had a deep voice, and probably easy to find videos of him talking online if they looked for it. ''Hm?'' She blinked her eyes when Suki pointed at her and then looked over at Mar. More like her voice? She wasn't sure what her colleague was getting at, but she just let her follow that train of thought and focused on being friendly with Suki. ''Thank you for your help, Suki.'' She chimed in with one more warm smile as Detective Ko needed to talk with them. ''Sounds about it! If you're not sensing anything our best bet is checking out that suspect.'' She nodded at Mar, turning back to Detective Ko with a smirk. ''You saw that did you? ~ You're right, that's one half of my quirk. I can't fly as fast carrying people, but it still beats the Tokyo traffic jams.'' Suddenly, Lucille transformed her arms into large, black crow wings and her feet into talons. ''Going up!'' She exclaimed cheerfully as she made sure to grab Ko and Mar in such a way that they didn't get stabbed by her talons, but were still secure. She wanted to go over the case so far in her head one more time, but flying was a lot more taxing than it looked, and she didn't have as much space to dedicate to brainstorming as she would have liked. By the time they had landed and were entering the premises, Lucille had snuck what looked like an ordinary juice box out of her pocket. However, it was actually full of blood. She needed to drink blood to avoid becoming anemic if she used her quirk too much, and she never knew when she might need that little extra boost in case the suspect turned violence. Besides, blood tasted delicious. She couldn't help but notice how spotless this place was, even for the workplace of a Doctor. She almost felt bad walking in here coming directly from the streets. Lucille let Detective Ko lead the conversation with Geo Koji at first, a mutation quirk user with a quirk... She wasn't quite expecting. A spider, perhaps, or a snake, but a cone snail? When Geo Koji mentioned them she gave a little wave and a smile while she silently sipped on her juice box. Realizing that their Detective friend might be coming across a bit tense and serious, she decided to lighten the mood a bit. ''It's a nice place you've got here.'' She remarked, still looking around and taking in the details, even more so as they entered the lab. Huh, there was a lot of mutation type quirks working here, why did that come across as odd to her? ''Does the name Niju Hon ring any bells? He was found dead this morning, having ingested your venom.''gamelizardnarrator, Mar
