It was rare that Mar got to do a swimming focused training exercise with the students. Everyone did a little bit here and there, like simulated floods, but those often were rescue oriented lessons and Mar was just lending her expertise as one of the relatively few heroes that excelled at swimming and could breathe underwater. Today though? She was holding an extra training session for a student that had reached out to her about specifically underwater training. It was student she hadn't gotten a chance to get much of an impression of yet too, so she was looking forward to that as well.

UAU had the USJ and a whole section dedicated to ocean-like conditions and Mar herself didn't really have to even jump through too many hoops to set up the lesson. Just making sure with the school it was free and wouldn't interfere with any other lessons and gave everything a once over to make sure nothing from previous exercises was lingering around in a way that might cause problems. She hadn't even needed to really do much more than that because of how on the ball UAU was when it came to keeping the facilities ready to use at practically all hours.

Popping up from underwater and making her way back to land, Mar quickly ran through a mental checklist before giving a little nod to herself. Retrieving her phone and pushing her hair out of her eyes, she sent a quick email to the student in question - Kodai, if she hopefully remembered the name correctly - letting them know the USJ was ready to go and to meet her there.

Putting her phone away and stifling a yawn with one hand, the P.E. teacher picked a nearby rock to take a lean against while she waited for Kodai to arrive. And maybe close her eyes for a second.

It took a lot of encouragement to ask Professor Mar Naia Navarro Ruiz, also known as Tiburón, for extra classes and training centered around underwater hero work. But eventually, after much encouragement from his friends and parents, Kodai had finally got the encouragement to send an email to the professor for extra help. Fortunately for him, Professor Tiburón agreed to help Kodai out and start up some private underwater training sessions between the two of them. Needless to say, Kodai was both excited and a little anxious about this news.

This was his chance to experiment with an aspect of his quirk that he hadn’t had a chance to practice with and impress a professor. Now, if he could successfully impress professor Tiburón—well—that could lead to a wide away of opportunities and chances for him. This could lead to more training sessions, an awesome reference, and maybe even some sort of mentorship. Hell, if he impressed her enough, she might take him on some missions or something like that.

Those reasons were also why he was anxious. If he screwed up here, it could cling to him. Cling to him like a terrible stank or something. Kodai couldn’t risk that.

After all of his classes, a short run, then a shower, Kodai got on his super suit—because it was needed to keep him clothed—and made his way to the training facility that they would be meeting in. Admittedly, he was a bit late, mostly because he had to make sure his pets were fed and taken care of.

Arriving five minutes later than they agreed on, Kodai jogged to the location of the professor. “I am so sorry Professor, I lost track of time,” He stopped at the rock, panting a little from having to run here.

Keeping her eyes closed a little longer when she hear the sounds of footsteps jogging over, Mar straightened up with a slap of her tail against the ground and a yawn. Opening her eyes at Kodai's apology she offered the student a reassuring - if sleepy - shake of her head. "It happens, Kodai-san, no need for apologies." Most teachers would probably have emphasized the importance of punctuality, but Mar didn't know why he had lost track of time and it really hadn't been that late an arrival anyways. Anything from traffic to getting held up longer with some kind of task could take up an extra five minutes pretty easily... though she doubted it was traffic since they were still on UAU grounds and all.

Attempting to energize herself a bit Mar clapped her hands together and clasped them together.

"Well then, how do you want to go about this? Dip-your-toes-in or dive in head first?" She wasn't sure what teaching style Kodai would respond to the best, and she was going to have to adjust on the fly as they went. But she didn't mind, that just came with the job. If he wanted to start slow, she'd ask him to swim around a bit to warm up. But on the other hand if he wanted to jump right into it? She'd hop into the water herself for some under-water sparring to see what she was working with. Either way though she didn't move until Kodai decided, but if he left it up to her? She'd probably go with diving in head first.

The way she figured it, she could always scale it back once she had an idea of how well Kodai handled being underwater.

Oh no, did I wake her up? Kodai thought as caught his breath. The last thing he needed was to upset his teacher by ruining her beauty sleep, or well, whatever it was that she was having at this moment in time. He audibly sighed in relief when sensei Mars told him that there was no need for apologies, and that “it happens.” Kodai was about to go into a long and exaggerated explanation as to why he was late, and whatnot, fortunately, it seems it was not needed. Wiping some sweat from his forehead, Kodai stood straight up and placed his hands on his hips.

“Well,” He said slowly. Admittedly, Kodai honestly did not know how to answer the question. “I don’t know Sensei…..is there like some sort of healthy medium between going all in and taking things slow?”

He scratched the underside of his chin.

“Because, you know, I don’t think I need the basics? Or well, I suppose a reminder of the basics would be nice….but at the same time, I kinda just want to improve? And well, you can’t really improve unless you challenge yourself…but, I also just don’t want to wear myself out and just kinda screw myself over by going all out…you know?”

Oh god, was he talking too much? “I’m sorry Sensei….I didn’t think things through…to answer your question whatever you think is best.” He paused. “My quirk isn’t flashy or anything, so I need all the training I can get.”

Kodai clearly thought his answer wasn't very good or helpful, and maybe the perpetual sleepy expression on Mar's face didn't help, but it actually gave her an idea of exactly what she needed to do. "Alright, we can do that. First things first then, show me what you can do in the water as is and that'll tell me exactly what level of training you're looking for."

Hopping into the water herself so that she could easily observe any underwater activity without the reflection on the water surface or any other kind of distortion getting in her way, she floated about with just enough movement to keep water going through her gills. While it looked calm and flat from the surface, underneath it was a whole simulated ocean complete with uneven crevices that went down deeper, artificial rocks and coral, and plenty of sandy slopes and hills. Letting Kodai have some time to go through whatever he felt like doing to showcase where he was at to her, Mar was going to get down to the actual training. Popping her head back above the surface to speak clearly, she got ready to use up a whole bunch of energy. "Kodai-san, I'm sure you already know from your combat teachers that movement and positioning is one of the most important parts of a fight, right?" She paused long enough for a response before continuing. "And sometimes a fight is also a chase, on and off, and its a hero's job to try and apprehend the villain without letting anyone get hurt in the process if they can help it. But in water you have to worry about up and down a lot more, and cornering someone isn't as simple as it is on land. So we're going to have a race and I want you to do everything you can to try and capture me. Sound good?"

If he didn't have any objections, Mar was going to give a "Ready, Set, Go!" before diving back underwater and with a powerful flick from her tail send herself rocketing through the water. She wasn't actually all that much faster than him, she assumed, since she wasn't a speed focused hero or anything. But she had experience in moving around underwater, and she wanted this to be a learning experience - so if Kodai tried to grab her she was planning on making hard work.

He might surprise her and get her on the first or second try, but she had some tricks up her sleeve and was planning on making him learn to restrict her movement options if he didn't figure it out on his own right away.

Of course, he did not think things through or think that his answer was helpful. To be rather honest, he expected Sensei-Mars to have canceled or something. So, he was a little surprised that he hadn’t received a cancellation email earlier that morning. Right now, Kodai was placing all his faith in Sensei-Mars skills as an instructor. “That sounds like a good idea professor, um…I don’t really think that I can do much in the water though…hopefully I won’t be too much of a disappointment in that department."

Kodai watched Sensei-Mars slip into the calm simulated ocean water. While she was adjusting to the change in environment, Kodai took a moment to pursue through the archives of his Hojo Dino-Eye. The contact lens acted a lot like a cellphone, but, it had some added features specifically incorporated for Kodai. Working a lot like an augmented reality device, the implant conjured different images of various dinosaurs. The holographic images appearing and vanishing as fast as Kodai thought ‘no.’ Sensei’s Mar would not be able to see the images, for the most part, she would only see Kodai holding his chin in thought.

‘I need something small and quick’, he thought shaking his head. ‘Mosasaurus is too big, at least, right now he’s too big….same with Megalodon…’

No doubt it was odd for Sensei-Mar, seeing her student mumbling to himself, shaking his head at invisible apparitions and whatnot. Eventually, an image of Ichthyosaurus appeared. ‘There!’ he clapped his hands, analyzed the skeletal structure of the animal, and then approached the water.

When Kodai stepped into the water, he would start to alter and change shape. His suit shifting, expanding, stretching to his new form. “Ready Sensei,” the thought to speech device around his neck hummed, he would nod, at least, to the best of his ability, and with a quick and sudden burst of speed lung at Sensei-Mar.

Mar pursed her lips thoughtfully at Kodai saying he hoped he wouldn't be a disappointment. If she was Lucille she'd probably give him a warm smile, maybe an encouraging pat on the back or something, and some kind words? Mar wasn't sure if she could pull that kind of reassurance off, so instead she just made a mental note to keep an eye on Kodai's self-esteem for now. It wasn't uncommon, especially among first years, and he'd probably grow out of it just fine. If not, well, that was what the teachers and the school councilor was for, right? She wasn't sure what he was so deep in thought for either but she tried her best to be patient, even if she hated waiting, and she could sense little blips of extra electrical activity from Kodai so she assumed he was doing... something. If it was Quirk related or Gear related she had no idea, but it was a little bit more electrically active than it had been a bit ago.

Finally he was ready and transformed into what looked to her like a really long nosed dolphin-shark-tortoise-thing, sort of. She couldn't be certain since she couldn't see colors at all, but the shades of gray of his transformation blended in with the water enough that she was already considering that this could be great for infiltration in the future... if she could get someone to confirm that the form blended into the water as well as she thought it did.

But then they were off, Kodai lunging after her through the water with just as much speed as she had launched herself, and right away Mar had to twist in the water and with another flick of her tail send herself off at a diagonal angle to evade his first attempt at grabbing her. She wasn't sure, but that extra long mouth his transformation had would probably be able to snag her pretty easily if she wasn't careful to keep track of her legs, arms and tail while evading. So another flick of her tail sent her down towards one of the deep, narrow crevices in the simulated ocean. Some spots were even too small for her at their narrowest point, so navigating it without losing sight of her should prove a good exercise.

If he did happen to lose her though, she was going to pop out where he could see her again just to keep the training going - she wasn't here to win, she was here to train a student who needed to get used to the water.

Kodai was not too shy about his belief that his quirk wasn’t that good. After all, being a dinosaur did not give him near-invulnerability or allowed him to shoot lasers out of his eyes. No, his quirk just either turned him into a really big target or into an over glorified chicken. While Kodai did believe that anyone with a quirk can become a hero, at least with hardwork and dedication; he did understand or misunderstood that some people have quirks that placed them in level entirely on their own. Levels that, with his quirk, he could never achieve. Still, that wouldn’t stop Kodai from trying to reach that level. It’ll just take him a lot more work and effort.

In Kodai’s opinion the ichthyosaurus was basically an over glorified, prehistoric dolphin. But despite its fat barrel-like body, Kodai excelled in maneuverability, at least, when it came to other prehistoric-aquatic creatures that he easily knew about. About three meters in length, Kodai could easily navigate the underwater labyrinth. But, he knew that he might not be able to fit into the small gaps and holes that hid around the makeshift ocean floor that the training facility possessed.

So he tried to play things smartly. With a flick of her tail, Mars twisted, launching herself at a diagonal angle and evading Kodai’s bottle-nose jaws. No doubt mindful of his jaws, Kodai noticed that Mars dived downward. Towards one of the narrow crevices within the simulated ocean. Mindful of the difficulty, Kodai would flick his tail, he launched himself in the opposite direction of her–then–dived downward so that he would be swimming parallel from his instructor. Then, twisting his whole body, Kodai launched himself at a right-angle, trying to ram into her or change her direction.

No doubt his instructor would realize that Kodai was trying to prevent her from reach the ocean floor, and the narrow crevices that it contained.

Mar gave a quick twist of her own as Kodai intercepted her path, successfully forcing her to abandon the idea of using the crevices against him. Instead of trying to evade the attempt to ram her the shark hero continued to turn brought her tail around in a strong swipe to meet it head on. Or well, tail-on anyways. She wasn't nearly using full force, but she was putting actual effort into it and if Kodai didn't have some trick up his sleeve or some way to avoid it he was probably about to get tumbled through the water from the force.

Even if he did though, Mar was already impressed with him catching on to what she had been trying to do so quickly and she couldn't help the sharky smile on her face.

If the two attacks did collide, Mar wasn't going to be shrugging it of either. She was a pro, and strong, but she wasn't really that much more durable than a normal athelete and had far less stamina. So if that did happen, she'd be catching her breath - even under water she did still have to do that - and giving her tail a rub with one hand as she got ready for Kodai to recover and come at her again. Assuming he hadn't done something tricky that completely changed that outcome, she'd also flick her eyes around underwater to consider what to test him with next. Sandy hills, underwater boulders... She had a few ideas.

Admittedly, Kodai was a bit proud that his plan worked. He was successfully able to divert Mar’s course away from the ocean floor, but he did not expect for his instructor to meet him head on–or well, more accurately meet him tail on. Kodai was durable, yes, much more durable than the average athlete, but he wasn’t sure that he could take a direct hit from Sensei-Mar. Unfortunately, he was too into it to really think about it. They collided, the impact spinning Kodai backwards and stunning him for a second.

Shaking his head, Kodai readjusted himself and realized that a head on collision like that wouldn’t be the best idea. But what else could he do? Unlike Mar, when Kodai assumed a transformation, he didn’t have hands. Just a tail, fins, and a snout filled with razor sharp teeth.

Razor sharp teeth, he thought to himself. Okay–Sensei Mar said that movement and positioning is one of the most important things in a fight? Right?

He grinned….or well, grinned as much as he could with a elongated snout.

Without warning, Kodai committed a false charge, stopping half way, and then dived downward with a flick of his tail.

Alright, Hojo Dino-Eye, give me something big and monstrous.

The contact lens did its work. Imposing the image of an Mosasaurus right in front of him, Kodai started to transform. His body elongated to the point that it was now massive, about the same size as a Killer Whale. Then, stopping just below the ocean floor, Kodai will hover there, watching his mentor carefully. If Mar made an attempt to dive for the ocean floor again, he’d intercept, lunging at her.

Mar's tail lashed out again as Kodai charged, whiffing through the water as he stopped just shy of being hit and dived instead. That was good, he could take a hit but wasn't a meathead about it and knew how to adjust his strategies. She was about to race off again when suddenly Kodai transformed again and she found a massive whale-like dinosaur looming in front of her. Immediately a tingle of unease went down her back and along her tail, the sheer size putting her on edge as she hesitated for a moment. The huge blip of an electrical field was putting her on edge too, but that was something most other people wouldn't understand.

She really, really wasn't a fan of huge creatures and especially not huge whale-like creatures in the water, and reflexively muttered a warbled "Big..." to herself.

But she had a student to teach and needed to set a good example so she pushed those irrational feelings aside and made her move. Not for the ocean floor, but up towards the surface - aiming to launch herself out of the water with enough speed and power to arc through the air and hopefully make Kodai lose sight of her as she used his current forms size to try and get into his blind spots. She'd have to be careful to not get hit, but if she managed to dive back into the water she was going to do her best to stay out of his line of sight. The benefit of being so small compared to such a large opponent was every movement Kodai made would be easy to see - and feel, with the shifting of the water - coming.

Yes, go up.

Kodai thought triumphantly–or well, not really triumphantly. Admittedly, the young student was just a little too happy that his plan to keep her from the ocean floor was working. For some reason, Kodai was simply thrilled that one of his plans actually worked. Usually his plans, whether in battle or not, bellied up due to his own incompetence. Or perceived incompetence. If he could smile, he would, but well, having a long snout made it difficult.

But it seemed his plan backfired.

Mar jetted upward with significant speed and power. Kodai braced himself for some sort of impact, he expected her to leap into the sky and then charge him. But. She didn’t. Kodai for got that the name of the game was to catch her. This wasn’t a fight. This was a game of tag.

Damn it, I’m dumb.

He cursed at himself.

Taking advantage of his size, Mar stayed out of his line of sight. She used her small size and his vastness to her advantage, darting to his blindspots and staying out of his view.

Damn it.

Hoping to knock her back or simply to give him some space, Kodai started to flail and spin around, with the intention of pulling the water with him to create a miniature whirlpool. He wanted to knock her back, to push her away, so that he could hopefully stun her.
