I

t was one of life's great mysteries. Farrin wasn't sure how he had done it. It made no sense at all, but he made the impossible possible. Apparently, Kei had already partaken in a few of the sports festival's challenges, but the ol' time-turner managed to drag him out into the field again. A combat challenge. Two on two. 

"Like I said, lad, no need ta' put yerself in harm's way," he explained again.

He said as much when he first asked Kei–that he was happy to tackle both opponents. If Kei really felt outmatched, he could walk right off the edge of the arena and leave it to Farrin. In truth, the young time-turner wouldn't mind a two-v-one scrap to really push himself, but he knew Kei wouldn't walk away like that. Still, the option was there. 

"Let me hold their attention, then make yer' move," he offered, eyeing the opposition. 

One was a large muscular fella with long white hair; looked as though he chewed screws and benched tanks or some shite. The other boy's physique was mostly hidden beneath a large black coat and baggy shorts. He wore his confidence with a pearly smile spread from ear to ear. Their quirks were a mystery, which only made the challenge more realistic. You never knew what quirks you might run into out in the field. In the field wasn't Kei's place, though; for that reason, Farrin would keep a little extra attention on the lad.

Okay, now this was just his own fault.

Kei wasn't a fighter. This was a fact. When there was any sign of danger, he'd avoid the centre of that battle and evacuate everyone he could at best. At worst he'd simply just run, like that time a sea monster was chasing him and Yaoyao down.

But then came Farrin, a fighter himself, one of the strongest people he knew, and he asked him to partner up for a 2v2. Had he seen his other match against Michael and Masao? That had to be it- he couldn't think of any other reason the guy would ask him instead of the many other hero students in the department. And what did he do upon receiving the request?

He accepted it. Because Farrin was a nice guy who would've understood if he refused, even wouldn't mind handling both opponents on his own if Kei wanted to call it quits. It was Kei who wouldn't forgive himself if he had to make the time-turner find someone else for the challenge.

He really was his own worst enemy.

The support major stood on his side of the arena, staring with wide eyes at their opponents. Did they have to look so scary before the match started? He wheezed in response to Farrin's words. "Okay." Farrin creates an opening, Kei uses it. Good plan. Solid plan.

As for what he'd use that opening for, he'd have no idea until the opportunity rose.

A

  loose strategy was often the most desirable. Loose meant flexible, and flexibility was key to a strategy’s survival. It was the rigid, unbending plans that fell apart upon first contact. They were overly complicated and collapsed under the weight of reality. A single pin out of place, and the whole thing came down.

Farrin would handle the frontlines, drawing the enemies' attention. Kei, in turn, would pincer the opposition when an opportune moment presented itself. Simple and adaptable. No star alignment required.

“N’ remember, if yuh’ feel in over yer’ head, step right outta the ring. No hard feelins,” Farrin repeated his earlier sentiments.

Kei was a support course student. Farrin had faith in the lad, especially after his earlier performance during another combat challenge. Still, ultimately, he hadn’t signed up for all the trouble that came with the hero course and the trouble that so often followed Farrin. Well, maybe they both signed up for it in this instance, but it was Farrin’s doing. So, the lad’s health was his responsibility.

“I’ll be startin by targeting muscles over there,” he nodded in the white-haired student's direction. “Gonna blitz 'im, but I’ll fire a few rounds the other lad’s way ta keep his sights set on me.”

The bell rang a moment later, signaling the start of the match. True to his word, Farrin boomed across the arena. A few stun rounds beamed toward the coated fella, forcing him to backpedal to avoid the projectiles. He glared at the time-turner. Good, he was free to witness what happened next.

The air burst as Farrin sped up, hitting his top speed. Blink, and you'd miss it. As promised—an absolute blitz.. Farrin’s fist blasted into the white-haired fella’s core and launched the man right out of the arena. His back crashed against the outer walls below the seating. Then he slumped to the ground.

One down. One to go.

Farrin smirked, wearing his confidence. He turned to face their remaining opponent, gauging his reaction. His fright betrayed him through a wide-eyed stare, but it only lasted a brief moment. He found his composure—and his confidence.

“Well, that’s not ideal, but it’s far from over,” he spoke with words of venom.

Farrin boomed again at full speed, but victory retreated beyond his reach. Shadows swirled at the student's feel, congealing into a dark mound, then split into a dozen rings around him. A suit of dark armor rose from each ring, each wielding a blade. Blunted weapons, but large. They walled Farrin off his target, two swinging the Time-Turner's way. He leaped back, the blades missing their mark but shattering the tiles where Farrin had stood just a moment prior. Six knights pursued Farrin, while three rushed toward Kei, leaving another three to defend their opponent. The team of two had been reduced to one, but that one was a one-man army. This was bound to be interesting.

Holy crap.

Kei hadn't even moved and one of their opponents was out of the ring already. Farrin really did pack a lot of power. All of a sudden it was a 2v1, and Kei was feeling less hesitant about taking up the time-turner's offer to step out himself. He'd do their opponent a favour really; a 1v1 was much more fair.

That is, until it was revealed that their remaining opponent was a summoner of something much more menacing than Rahul's bunnies. And several of those somethings were coming right for him. Farrin got the shorter straw in this sure - he got double the knights that were charging Kei's way - but the fact Kei was a support student could not be understated. Farrin was likely prepared to take on multiple large knights. Kei was not. But if Kei ran out now, the knights would run towards the hero student instead and a 1v9 would be really unfair.

So the gadgeteer did the brave thing instead and screamed. Covering his face, two metal arms shot out from his back to grasp on the helmets of the two closest adversaries, using them as leverage to vault over them before crashing their heads together. He landed with a stumble, already not liking his predicament.

How was Farrin even faring against this?

arrin was dancing. Well, he was basically dancing. He swayed in one direction, then the other. He leaped just above a low swinging sword and threw his boot forward in a kick that landed square against the closest knight's chest or cuirass. He simultaneously launched the knight back and scored some distance between himself and his attackers. 

The knight he kicked clattered against the ground and rolled in several directions. A gauntlet here. The helmet there. They were numerous and certainly intimidating but weren't bound together all that well. The armor was inert, too. For a moment, at least. 

Black tendrils shot out from each piece, then tugged the armor together into a single form. The knight was reforged, stood its height, and then charged alongside the others. All six rushed in Farrin's direction, bringing their blades to bear. 

"Ah, shite bucket," Farrin murmured. 

He glanced in Kei's direction. The lad leapfrogged two and had a third in pursuit. He said he would keep the lad safe and intended to keep that promise to the best of his ability. Farrin lifted his wrist, then put the cannon Kei made for him to use. One adhesive round smacked into the Kei's pursuer, the blue adhesive goop slowing it rather than attempting to shatter it. There was no sense going for the latter option if it would just pull itself back together. 

Still, Farrin's attackers shrunk the distance in the space and time of that single shot. They swung from several directions, and again, Farrin was forced to play defense. He leaped aside, then jumped above another blow. Air evacuated his lungs when one of the blunted blades slammed into his gut and launched him across the arena. 

He rolled along the floor but caught himself a few feet from the edge. "Son o' uh," he coughed up. Pain flared from his gut, but Farrin pushed off the tile floor and stood his height. They were going to need a new strategy.

This was fine. This was fine. The knights were still standing as Kei was nowhere near as strong as Farrin when it came to breaking them even temporarily but at least he was running into the arena and not towards the edge. If only normal brain function was included in their sentience- then maybe the helmet clashing would stun them long enough so he could get a breather but no, from watching one of the hero student's opponents burst into armour parts, they were very much Head Empty^TM.

Which of course was no problem for them- they could pull themselves back together just fine! Great! Fantastic. The knights had longevity. Which was going to make getting to their master a lot harder. Not that he had time to think on how to go about that, he was still busy getting chased.

Farrin's shot struck true, and the number of knights after Kei was reduced from three to two as the third was stuck on the floor. "Thank you!" But what he did was a sacrifice the gadgeteer wouldn't realize until it was too late, eyes widening as Farrin rolled towards the edge. "No!" He can't do what he'd done for Ylva this time- if Farrin was out he would not be able to stay in and win by himself.

Kei's eyes returned to the knights as he heard them close in, and with his stress heightened, he pointed two claws their way. "Get away from me!" Torrents of water were fired from each, aiming to push them back. Maybe even out of the ring if they were lucky. Then they couldn't just run back in after right?

isticuffs: engaged. Farrin swished, swayed, and then fired balled fists like cannons. Then there were the actual wrist cannons, too, which blew another construct apart. Farrin leaped over one blade, then brought the hammer of his right fist down on his closest pursuer. The shot thundered through the area forcefully enough that the knight's armor collapsed entirely. It rolled off in every direction, not out but down for the few moments it would take to reassemble. Another blade dropped only to become lodged in the ground; Farrin boomed across the arena, blasting into one knight, then another. 

One knight leaped into a spin, then slashed downward. Farrin caught the blade by its faces. He brought his leg up, then launched his foot into the knight's core. Another piece temporarily removed from the board. "Not out yet!" He shouted in response to Kei's earlier concern. He couldn't speak much amid the melee, but things were far from over. 

Kei's efforts were not without merit either. Just as one knight swung its mighty blade, Kei's twin geysers slammed into it and its closest ally. Both rocketed over the edge and collapsed into each of their components. Slowly, they reassembled themselves. It wasn't clear whether they were allowed to return, but that wouldn't matter for long.

Farrin dropped low, throwing his weight into his legs, then rocketed himself into the air. Five knights were in the middle of reassembly. The two Kei knocked over, and three Farrin had broken apart. He would deny them their complete forms. Farrin aimed, then fired a volley of adhesives. Suddenly, six knights were rendered useless: the three Farrin had broken apart in the melee, two Kei blasted over the edge, and the earlier knight he immobilized. So, that left only six more and their master.

"That's it. I've had enough!" Their opposition shouted. 

Two of his remaining guards joined the others, still chasing Farrin, leaving only one at his side. His attention was locked on the Time-Turner, leaving Kei with an opening.

Farrin was okay. Still in top form even, with the way he was bashing into all the bots in his way. That's good to see. Kei gave him a thumbs up in response. The guy even thought to shoot adhesives on the broken pieces so they couldn't reassemble themselves. Not when the glue was too strong to pull away from. Huh, maybe he should try adding that to his quarms. He would get away from stuff a lot better if he could prevent the bad guy from chasing him.

But then he remembered no one knew his quirk worked on that. So yeah, it's for the best he just stuck with water.

What was he doing again? Right, they were still fighting.

Their opposition sent most of his knights Farrin's way, making him heavily outnumbered again. Kei should help thin them out- a two versus... five? Would be more manageable than a one versus five. At the same time though, the opponent just had one knight with him now. Surely this was the opening they'd been looking for right?

He had to trust that Farrin will be fine. They couldn't waste a chance like this.

The support major reeled his metal arms back and snuck closer to their competition, making sure he was out of the summoner's line of sight by sticking to the side of the arena. Easy enough. The guy was wholly focused on the time-turner now- annoyance evident from his call. So far so good.

When Kei deemed himself close enough, he deployed all four of his claws - two knights were one thing but who knew how strong the person himself was - and pointed them at both the summoner and his bodyguard before firing on all cylinders, four water geysers instead of two.

All or nothing now.

ime turned so slowly in Farrin's eyes. Enemy reinforcements arrived, charging across the tile grounds like a medieval battlefield. They swung this way and that, leaving no room for counterattack, which was just fine by Farrin because he saw something else, too. Kei took advantage of their enemy's mistake, inching closer from behind the summoner's sight. 

So, Farrin played his part. The dance continued as he dropped below one swing, rolled out from another, then kicked off the ground and backpedaled away from two more slashes. One blade caught him along his back—a flanker. Farrin bit back the pain and thrust his armor boot backward, driving it through the plate armor. The knight staggered but recouped swiftly, slashing again. 

Farrin was already gone. He dove between two more knights as they swung their weapons. They were numerous but imprecise. Perhaps their focus was tied to their master? Farrin weaving between them, breaking line of sight, could help. Or it was sheer dumb luck. However, Kei was nearly in position, so it was time to lend a hand. 

The winds whipped into a frenzy as Farrin spun into an uppercut. A resounding bang cracked as he lobbed one of the knights' helmet the summoner's way. One more distraction and one that wouldn't pull his attention to Kei. He wasn't finished, though. There was one final knight standing guard at the summoner's side. That wouldn't do. 

One blade slashed into another tile on the ground, missing its mark. Farrin had sidestepped the blow, then tore into the knight's elbow. The student leaped, kicked off the blade embedded in the ground, and lunged in the one knight playing guard's direction. In a mid-air spin, he thrust his armored boot into the guard's torso and kicked off of it. Farrin flew back toward the rest of the knights, but the guard was kicked off the side of the arena. All four of Kei's geysers slammed into the summoner, undeterred as there was no other target beside him now.

"Gotcha," Farrin teased lowly. 

His gaze was locked on the summoner, who flew off the arena's edge just as Farrin's back slammed into another knight. The rest of the troop surrounded him, bringing their weapons to bear, but an alarm rang out, and the crowds boomed. Victory. 

The blades dropped but disappeared before ever making contact. "Damn it," the summoner could be heard cursing his ring out. "Yuh' did well, all things considered," Farrin shouted to their fallen opponent, picking himself up. "N' you!" He then turned in Kei's direction. "Deadly! Absolutely deadly!" he offered, clapping his battle bud on the back. "Yuh' know yuh' could really be a hero student if yuh' wanted," he said, smiling. Kei had a passion for his work; this was no attempt to turn him down the hero's path, but the lad was certainly capable of it. "C'mon, lunch is on me!" Another win in the books!

Why had the place gone dark all of a sudden? He thought he was doing so well, focusing on his goal without so much as a glance at Farrin. Which was hard by the way- all the clashes made him worry that the hero student got hurt from the dogpile, a grimace on his face as he imagined all the cuts he could get from the armours and blades. But yeah, the arena was pitch black and there was cheering for some reason? What the hell-

Oh. His eyes were closed.

The light was straining as Kei opened them again, first glancing at the water dripping from his gear before he followed their intentional path towards their opponent. Who was gone from his spot. His eyes scanned further and- oh, there he was. Lying on the ground. Outside the bounds. Did... did that mean-

Did they win?

Holy crap they actually won. A huff escaped the support major first before it escalated into a full blown laugh, in complete disbelief at what they'd done. What he'd done maybe. Him, not even in the hero department, winning this competition not once but twice.

He was so out of it that Farrin's clap made him jolt in surprise, letting out a yelp. He had to regulate his breathing before he could speak again. "Thank you?" Deadly was a good thing right? Meant he was strong maybe? The time turner seemed happy so that had to be it.

Though Kei shook his head as the adrenaline died down. "Oh no, I'm not doin' this again." God, if he somehow ended up in a third fight he might actually cry. Not to mention his girlfriend would cave someone's face in. "But yeah, lunch. I'm good with lunch."

Crossing fingers they don't have to rescue people from fires first again.
